I’m such a fan of these products that I keep them ‘backstage’ in a bag with my name on
at the hair salon I go to (where I’d happily PAY to have a locker, though fortunately
that’s not needed). For a mega-boost, I also like to slather on Sam McKnight
Deeper Love 5-Minute Intense Treatment Mask, from £22 for 50ml mini.
(I recommend trying this travel size first, because this is ‘investment
haircare’ – but I’ve a hunch you’ll trade up to the bigger tub.)
Phil Smith Coco Licious Coconut Shine Shampoo and Conditioner, £4
each for 250ml. At the other end of the price spectrum is a brilliant new range
of Everyday Expert hair products from hairdresser Phil Smith – and I’m
wowed by their great value. Smelling pleasantly but not Bounty bar-style
overwhelmingly coconutty, both the shampoo and luscious conditioner
feature lashings of coconut oil for silky softness and hydration.
Aveda Smooth Infusion Anti-Frizz Shampoo, from £12.50
for 50ml, and Conditioner, £12.50 for 40ml. One way to tackle
‘Mad March Hair’ is specifically to seek out formulations with
ingredients that are specifically moisturising, such as hydrolysed
wheat protein and aloe vera; both of those feature in this brilliant
daily-use duo alongside maize and guar bean to banish frizz
and leave hair glossily manageable, rather than wayward.
Neal’s Yard Remedies Nurturing Rose Shampoo and
Conditioner, from £11.50 each for 200ml. This whisk-you-to-arose-garden
duo, meanwhile, is ideal for dry, damaged hairtypes
(notably hair that’s been bleached, in my experience). I always
think it says everything about how good a product is when it’s
offered in almost a litre-sized bottle, as the shampoo is (£38).
Holistic Silk Pure Mulberry Silk Pillowcase, £89
(holisticsilk.com). One for your next birthday wishlist,
perhaps: Holistic Silk’s pillowcases are hugely popular with
beauty editors (including this one). Resulting in up to 50%
less ‘drag’ than a cotton pillowslip, they’re ace for preventing
the friction to hair that results in wiriness and frizziness
– doing much more than simply making you feel like a
Hollywood movie star. (Though that’s a rather nice bonus.)
Ogario Restore and Shine Hair Masque, £28.50 for 200ml
(ogariolondon.com). Despite the recommendation to deep-treat
hair once a week, you probably wouldn’t go wrong making
that twice-weekly, at this time of year. This luscious offering is
powered by avocado, vitamin E, glycerine (which actually attracts
moisture to hair) and pro-vitamin B5, targeting split ends, with
a divine lemon sherbet-y scent that invites lavish application.
FFØR Re:Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner, from £16 for
set of 2 x 100ml sizes. Might sound Scandi, but FFØR is actually a
made-in-the-UK brand whose name stands for ‘Free From/Original/
Real’, offering products that are 100% vegan, PETA-certified crueltyfree
and In fully recyclable bottles, jars and tubes. This particular
moisture-boosting duo is infused with organic orange and cinnamon, and
was also a ‘wow’ with testers in the most recent Beauty Bible Awards.
Hair Proud Clean & Strong Pre-Wash Hair Mask, £9.95 for 200ml. I hear you
chorus: ‘What the hell is a pre-cleanse mask?’ Well, this is massaged into dry hair before
shampooing, so it can slurp up the goodness from squalene, strengthening biotin, Kakadu
plum vitamin C and an amino acid complex. Leave for five to 10 minutes, then shampoo
and rinse as usual. (I absolutely promise that you won’t simply wash its goodness down the sink.)
Rahua Smoothing Hair Balm, £32 for 17g. Sometimes, you just need something to tame flyaways and
banish frizz on the go. Add a dab of this blend of 100% natural ingredients – sunflower, coconut, rapeseed,
Sacha Inchi and cocoa butter all feature – to your palms, rub together and skim over hair to restore shine
and manageability, and as you swish those newly-gleaming tresses, you’ll get a sublime waft of gardenia.
So, honestly, it doesn’t have to be ‘Mad March’, for hair…
