We would like to thank the Nurse on tour health promotion
roadshow team, at Gloucestershire Primary care Training
hub, for providing a day of health checks for our patients
this week. The bus was located in Chipping Campden
School car park - we would also like to thank the school for
allowing the team to use the school car park and for waiving
car parking charges during the day for our patients. The day
was very well attended by patients invited to participate and
we would like to thank our patients for taking part.
Staff
We would like to welcome our new junior Doctor, Dr
Katerina Thomas-Fernandez, to the team for the next six
We wish Dr Degnan well for his upcoming move to Canada
and would like to reassure our patients that Dr Degnan’s
new Advanced Nurse Practitioners, who are both joining
the practice over the next couple of months.
TWINNING ASSOCIATION
PLANS FOR SUMMER FESTIVAL
17th - 18th AUGUST
This year’s visit from Pont-d’Ouilly takes place during the
school holidays, between 16th and 19th August. We expect
the group to include schoolchildren and teenagers, reflecting
the new links being developed between the young people of
both towns.
Together with the Cidermill Theatre and Chipping Campden
schools and with the full support of our Town Council we
plan to make the weekend of the French visit (17th and 18th
August) a Summer Festival weekend for our community, with
the Cidermill as its hub, to celebrate Chipping Campden and
Pont-d’Ouilly and the flourishing relationship between our
twin towns. We hope to involve local societies and businesses
and have lots of things for young and old to see and do around
the town.
We will be working on the Summer Festival concept and
aiming to pull together a programme over the next 4-6 weeks.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
We welcome your contributions.
Email: editor@campdenbulletin.co.uk
Dear Editor
I want to thank the lovely, kind lady, who paid for my shop at
the Co-op, as I had forgot my purse.
I asked the Co-op if I could pay the £2.45 the next day, but
to no avail.
I am 88, with a visual impairment and live half hour walk
away, so I was disappointed at their attitude as I have been
going there for 25 yrs.
So, a BIG THANK YOU to that lovely lady. It is people like
here that make this world a better place.
Local resident, C. Campden
Dear Editor
Everyone at Campden Edge would like to congratulate
Chipping Campden School on achieving their Platinum
Artsmark Award from the Arts Council in January this
year. Well done to all the staff and students who worked
so hard to achieve this amazing result. The assessors said
that they …“were impressed by your strong commitment
to the transformative power of the arts, which is making a
difference to arts-based practice within school and to other
professionals within local primary and secondary schools.”
They also noted the support the school gives to Premium
Pupils students.
Helena Hesketh, Head of Music at CCS would like to say
“A big thank you to all Campden Edge donors. You can not
underestimate the impact your generosity has made on our
school community in recent years which has helped us to
secure this Platinum status.”
Dr Darren Henley OBE, Chief Executive of the Arts Council,
adds: “Becoming an Artsmark school demonstrates that
through offering a broad, ambitious, and creative curriculum,
every pupil can develop character and resilience, increasing
their knowledge, curiosity and skills that will remain with
them through to adult life.”
As the number of Pupil Premium pupils grows, Campden
Edge are being asked to support more local students in
studying music, drama, and the arts; and we feel strongly that
an Arts Education is so important in strengthening our young
people’s self-confidence and critical thinking. It also boosts
self-esteem, encourages discipline, and develops the creative
skills they will need for their future.
All of us are volunteers – keeping our overheads to an absolute
minimum – and we are always looking for more fund raising
opportunities. If you would like to give your support, you can
find the Donate page on www.campdenedge.org and simply
press the Donate Button. Alternatively our bank details
Dear Editor
Bye Campden it’s been a 16 year long blast.
When you mention you’re leaving a great job, everyone
assumes there is something wrong, but sometimes there is
nothing wrong, things just evolve.
When I announced I was leaving Mill House, a couple of
‘locals’ were ‘looking for the gossip and drama’, but guess
what, sometimes there isn’t any.
I moved to Campden 16 years or so ago to be manager of the
Cotswold House and Noel Arms, I then moved on to have an
improved work life balance and spent an amazing just over six
years at Mill House. We bought our little home and settled into
the community (if you make an effort in this wonderful town
it is given back tenfold).
This letter is just ‘a little note’ to say thank you to the
community who welcomed us and everyone who made the 16
years memorable, (its also a note to put some rumours to bed, I
have heard everything from ‘were you sacked’ to ‘I heard you
won the lottery’ I can confirm neither are true.
Although we hoped to avoid it, perhaps the writing has been on
the wall for a while, 6 months ago, my partner was promoted
and landed a job well outside the area, not wanting to leave, we
quietly tried to manage with my partner working 2 hours away
and me remaining in Campden, we tried this for 6 months, we
really did give it a go! but in the end something had to give and
that was ‘Campden’.
Having made the decision, I put the feelers out for a new role,
and secured a super new job with a past employer, within 15
minutes of looking, so will soon be off to join my partner.
My top tips based on 16 years’ experience:
A walk on Dover’s Hill is vastly underrated (if you have not
done it for a while then give it a go).
Bantam still makes the best cakes.
Conversations regarding parking are very contentious.
A Pink Door festival should be created, other towns have
things such as scarecrow festivals, Campden should start a
whole new festival turning the towns doors pink once a year!
The Noel still has the best pint and bar staff.
In 16 years I have never had bad customer service from the
Co-op.
The Christmas lights/ market ‘people’ have done an amazing
job each year - literally gets better and better.
The Towns business awards are a tremendous asset to everyone
in the town.
Don’t let the odd negative person having a little natter behind
your back get you down (remember I have been both sacked
and won the lottery).
So thank everyone and ‘that’s all folks’... or is it, we have not
sold our house but will be renting it out as...we WILL be back!
SCUTTLEBROOK WAKE
Plans are well underway for Scuttlebrook
2024, and over the coming months we
will update the community with all the
details for the event on June 1st. In the
meantime, here’s our latest news.
Queen’s Party 2024
We had a very successful party on Friday 2nd of
February, to select our new Queen, attendants and
page. This saw us return to the traditional venue of the
town hall, after being kindly hosted by The Lygon Arms
for many years. We had a strong turnout from many
families who came to support the event and enjoy the
music, raffle, bar, hot dogs and children’s party games.
All together, we were able to raise around £200 which
will go toward the costs of running Scuttlebrook. The
Queen’s party chosen for 2024 are:
Queen: Jasmine Thorne.
Attendants: Lucie Buckland, Edith Taylor,
Nancy Sabin and Caralee Righton.
Page: Cody Thorne.
A big well done and thank you to all the runners upplease
come back next year and have another go!
CHRIS NELSON, POLICE & CRIME COMMISSIONER FOR GLOUCESTERSHIRE - UPDATE
PLAN FOR NEW POLICE COMMUNITY
HUB AT CHIPPING CAMPDEN
With funding for more than 400 extra police officers, Police
Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and police staff in
Gloucestershire, I want as many of them as possible to be out
in our communities, preventing and detecting crime. That’s
how we’ve managed to cut anti-social behaviour by more
than 50% in Gloucestershire in the last three years, and I want
to continue this relentless focus on tackling all Community
Crimes should voters grant me another four years at the
election on 2nd May.
Police visibility in communities, especially rural areas
like the Cotswolds, is incredibly important to provide vital
reassurance to communities and help deter criminals. This
is frequently raised with me on the doorstep and is why I
have championed Neighbourhood Policing throughout
Gloucestershire, and funded a doubling in the size of the
specialist Rural Crime Team, to target criminals that prey on
isolated areas and businesses.
To do all this however, we also need somewhere for our
officers, PCSOs and staff to work from, and I want to make
sure they are staying in their communities, rather than having
to travel miles back to their base stations. Now if I was to
do this with new ‘police only’ buildings, it would be too
expensive, and take a very long time. I also have a duty to
make sure we have a balanced budget and that we are using
taxpayer’s money efficiently, and making those funds go
as far as possible. So instead, I have been working with
Gloucestershire County Council and their Fire Service to
take a new and innovative approach.
These are our Community Policing Hubs. I have already
opened two of these hubs, in existing fire stations where
local teams can work, write up notes and even hold meetings
with local residents (or just use the toilets and kitchen for
a much-needed break from the elements). They are a great
way to fulfil my ambition for visible local policing, in a cost
effective way by working in partnership with other public
sector organisations. It also means that our local police teams
and fire crews have more opportunities to work and train
together, providing a better service to residents and helping
keep more people safe.
This new approach is going to be a particular benefit for rural
areas like the Cotswolds, which is why I am very pleased
to confirm that one of the next hubs I am planning will be
at Chipping Campden fire station. I have been working with
Cllr. Lynden Stowe who has raised this issue with me many
times, and as soon as the local police have confirmed the
operational details, work will get under way.
I know that residents
in Newent, where
one of the first hubs
was created, have
seen increased
police visibility in
their community,
and I hope Chipping
Campden residents
will be able to see the
same benefits very
soon too.
FIRST OF A KIND CCTV SYSTEM
Whether speaking to local residents in a community, or some
of the more than 400 extra Police Officers, Police Community
Support Officers and Police Staff that I have funded in
Gloucestershire, if I ask them what else I can do to help make
our communities safer, it doesn’t take them long to mention
the need for extra CCTV cameras in our local communities.
This is no surprise, because whenever our front-line teams
are called to a crime or anti-social behaviour, one of the
first things they do is to check whether there is CCTV or
doorbell camera footage available. CCTV, as well as being
a great deterrent, can help gather evidence from the moment
an incident began, and can help provide clarity to an often
confused initial picture, which may not be all that it appears.
Effective camera coverage and the evidence it provides has
helped secure countless convictions, but crucially, it also
helps reduce the fear of crime. I have seen for myself how
effective this can be, helping communities that have been
plagued by anti-social behaviour and community crime for
months, almost completely eradicate the problem with the
support of hot-spot policing and foot patrols. This sort of
approach is relatively easy in urban areas, but for too long,
our rural areas have been left behind.
That is why, when my office put together our three very
successful applications to the Home Office for funding
through their excellent Safer Streets Fund, I wanted to
make sure improving the availability of CCTV and other
technologies for our rural areas was a priority.
The isolation felt by our rural communities in particular can
mean that unfortunately when crime does occur, it can have a
disproportionate effect on local residents. That was certainly
the case in Weston-sub-Edge, where, after a number of car
thefts and break-ins, residents were very concerned.
The local Parish Council approached the Cotswold Community
Safety Partnership, who used £8,300 of the money I allocated
them from Safer Streets to fund what we believe is the first
CCTV network of its kind in a Gloucestershire village. The
high definition cameras also have Automatic Number Plate
Recognition technology, to help identify vehicles and their
owners, to help track down criminals preying on the area.
This is exactly what I had in mind when we started bidding
for the Safer Streets Fund, helping communities to work
alongside their local police and council to make their area
safer, and I hope that more communities who have problems
with community crime or anti-social behaviour will consider
putting together similar proposals for future funding rounds.
BLOCKLEY CHAMBER
CONCERTS
SPRING TO AUTUMN SERIES STARTS
Friday 22nd March
7pm for 7.30pm, St George’s Hall, Blockley
Amicably complementing Campden Music’s Winter
Subscription Season, BCC present six varied concerts
between March and September. Full programme below.
It follows the BCC’s stimulating model of drawing
on performers from three sources. Young early-career
performers, happy to brave the train from Paddington (and
occasional replacement bus service); well-established
locally-based ensembles; and Wigmore Hall level
performers with a marvellous personal commitment to
music in small communities. All of our performers leave
saying warm things about BCC’s appreciative audiences,
and the excellent acoustic for chamber music. And they
want to come back.
So this year, we have a return visit by one of the country’s
best fortepianists, Steven Devine - but this year together
with his wife, soprano Kate Devine, presenting beautiful,
little-heard songs by Haydn and Beethoven. Plus last year’s
outstanding young string duo - but now teamed up with a
‘cello friend, becoming The Doncaster Trio. Plus a return
of the Oxford-based Adderbury Ensemble – but this year
playing as a quartet.
As before, the series present a very wide range of music,
ranging from Bach and Buxtehude, through the classical
and romantic greats, to Shostakovich and Britten.
Above all, the BCC’s objective is the same as before. To
present chamber music as it was designed to be enjoyed –
in a convivial gathering, in intimate surroundings, together
with friends old and new – and with good music along the
way.
BCC Subscription Tickets, including drinks, are £90 for
the six concerts (a 25% saving on single concert tickets).
Subscription Tickets are transferrable – we positively
encourage you to share with friends, if you can’t be at a
particular concert.
To book, contact lgpacker123@gmail.com / 01386 700579.
Finally, the much-appreciated BCC Next Generation short
recitals continue on occasional Sunday mornings in Blockley
Church, providing a public platform for outstanding local
school-age musicians. The first is a welcome return visit by
Amelia Parkin, pianist and organist, on Sunday 14th April,
THE CAMPDEN CHORUS
SPRING CONCERT
BRAHMS’ REQUIEM
The Campden Chorus’s Spring Concert (the first concert
under their new name) will take place at 7:30pm on
Saturday 23rd March in St. James’ Church, Chipping
Campden. The Chorus will be singing Ein deutsches
Requiem by Brahms, joined by Anna Patalong (Soprano)
and Benedict Nelson (Baritone). The work will be sung in
German and accompanied by piano duet (Jessica May and
Lynn Arnold) and timpani (Amy Matthews). The Musical
Director, Charles Matthews, will be conducting. The
concert will also include a beautiful setting by Schubert of
‘The Lord is my Shepherd’.
Rather than using the words from the Roman Catholic Mass
for the Dead, Brahms chose extracts from the Lutheran bible
that not only mourn the dead but also comfort the living. It
is thought that Brahms may have had in mind the deaths of
both his mother and his great friend Robert Schumann when
he composed the piece, although he never confirmed this.
The work was mainly written in 1865-6 and received its
first complete public performance in February 1869 at the
Leipzig Gewandhaus. Brahms was only 35 at this time and
the work established his reputation as a leading composer.
The piano duet arrangement of the orchestral setting, being
used in the concert, was made by Brahms himself in 1869.
Tickets will be on sale throughout March and will be
available from Chipping Campden Tourist Information
Centre, from Chorus members or on the door immediately
before the concert. The Chorus previously performed the
Requiem in 2014 and are very much looking forward to
providing the audience with another memorable evening.
Wayne will talk about the various forms of medieval
graffiti which can be seen locally, including masons’ marks,
devotional and memorial inscriptions and “ritual building
‘Talking Local History’ in the Court Room, 7.30pm
Tues 26th March ‘Women of the Weston family’:
Mary Fielding.
Reading the will of John Weston of Ebrington led Mary to
investigate the lives of his 11 children - 8 daughters and 3
sons - and the marriage links between the Westons and other
Campden families.
Josephine Griffiths (1863-1947) left us many memories of
Campden which she had collected as she visited the older
people of the town. She wrote:
“And now just a little account of bygone customs, sayings
and doings of those now far-off days mostly related by old
village friends, whose parents had verbally passed on the
tale to their own children.
To begin with, the 4th Sunday in Lent is generally called,
amongst its various other names: “Mothering Sunday”.
This is derived from the Epistle for that day which contains
the words: “Jerusalem above which is the Mother of us all”.
That Sunday was most strictly kept in this neighbourhood
being regularly observed by the young and a Sunday of
which much was thought. Indeed there was quite a flutter
amongst sons and daughters who always made a point of
looking up their parents and dining with them and should
the young people have unhappily lost them, some aunt or
Staff of the Griffiths’ household with two of the children in the
donkey panniers. c. 1870
elderly relative who had brought them up was visited and of
course they stayed to dinner according to the usual custom.
Among the food served at the annual feast was a great dish
of frumenty i.e. wheatmeal boiled in milk with currants and
sultanas in it.
Other friends and relations would also drop in, during the
day and the following lines would often be quoted by the
visitors: “Mid Lent Sunday one with another, every child
should dine with its mother”. And indeed it was duly
emphasised that this Sunday was different from all other
Sundays in Lent.
Then a fortnight afterwards came Palm Sunday. Even in
my own young days we were always expected to wear a
sprig of palm or sallow [willow] and every lad wore one in
his cap. “A pinch for no palm”, was the general saying if we
unluckily ventured to church without one, and one’s candid
brothers could pinch in those days.
When the girls left school their mothers taught them
housework, simple cookery and sewing, which proved
an excellent training for the first “little place”. They too
worked up in the domestic staff and proved capable and
thrifty maids; often staying with their employer till they
married. In fact they were looked upon as “one of the
family” and proved most loyal and sympathetic friends in
after life.
The girls learnt mending and darning and worked their
samplers. The object of these latter
beautiful examples of needlecraft was
to be able to mark legibly all personal
and household linen for there were no
woven Cash’s names in those days.
[Now even Cash’s tapes are redundant!]
Mrs Griffin went on to relate that “there
were no boughten shirts in there days;
suchlike wearing apparel being always
made at home and how well it all lasted
to be sure.”
Now, in the next century, we may be
moving back again to long-lasting and
reusable.
Below are details of just four (from 34) of the hugely varied events in this year’s festival
Helen Lederer, best known as Catriona, the dippy journalist in the TV series Absolutely Fabulous, and star of Celebrity
Big Brother 2017, tells all. A regular on the stand-up circuit and new-wave sketch shows in the
decade that launched the careers of today’s comedy household names and national treasures,
she shared stages with comedy pioneers like Ben Elton and Rik Mayall, and TV screens with
Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Harry Enfield, and many others. From Bottom to Happy
Families, Naked Video, French and Saunders, and Girls on Top; it is difficult to think of a comedy
show that Helen wasn’t a part of. So, plain sailing then? Well, not really. Not That I’m Bitter is a
powerful, frank and characteristically funny memoir revealing how choppy the waters could
be. Brilliantly written, revealing, and moving. Not That I’m Bitter is sweet, sour, and
unforgettable. ‘Helen Lederer is the third funniest woman in the world’ Dawn French
Laura Cumming, chief art critic of the Observer, gives an illustrated presentation on Carel
Fabritius, painter of the haunting masterpiece The Goldfinch, who died aged 32 when a gunpowder
explosion devastated Delft on the morning of 12 October 1654. What happened to Fabritius
before and after this disaster is just one of the discoveries in Thunderclap that explores the
relationship between art and life, interweaving the lives of Laura Cumming, her Scottish painter
father, who also died too young, and the great artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Laura’s is an
exquisitely written and produced book about what a picture may come to mean: how it can enter
your life and change your thinking in a thunderclap. At the end of the book Laura reveals an
astonishing fact about The Goldfinch painting
Imagine a fireball sweeping the length of Campden High Street or through Berrington Road and
Castle Nurseries, killing 72 residents and severely injuring over 70. Grenfell Tower was a small
close knit community every bit as strong as the ones in Campden and the surrounding villages. It
was not, as some might think, a transient population but a community where many residents had
lived for years, some even born there. Imagine the impact on our communities, and the natural
thirst and demand for justice we would feel if that fire could have been avoided! An altogether
different story to that of the Post Office scandal (which featured at last year’s festival) the
appalling tragedy that struck the almost 600 residents of Grenfell Tower on the 14th June 2017 is
another scandal that stills awaits resolution, and justice for the survivors.
'A jaw-dropping account of a callous system that swept individual conscience aside in favour of profit and
politics.' Evening Standard.
Henry Porter interviews Eleanor Catton, the youngest ever winner of the Man Booker Prize,
on what it means to win literary prizes, and they discuss Eleanor’s latest novel, Birnam Wood,
a compelling thriller inspired by ‘Macbeth,’ Climate Change, and the perils of Social Media.
Shakespearean in its wit, drama and immersion in character.
UPDATE
PLANNING & CONSERVATION MATTERS
Good progress has been made on the draft Neighbourhood
Development Plan (NDP), which is planned to be issued for
public consultation on Monday 8th April. The consultation
period will last 6 weeks. During this period, the full NDP
will be accessible on-line and hard copies will be able to
be held for reading at specific locations e.g. at the library.
The NDP is important; it guides, but does not determine,
all planning decisions relating to land use in the area. It
should therefore reflect the views of all stakeholders in the
neighbourhood. Accordingly, we strongly urge all residents
to respond to the consultation; your opinions need to be taken
into account in the process of finalising our NDP. To assist
Campden Society members in this respect, we will be issuing
further communications in a Members’ Newsletter early in
the consultation period. We do not intend to provide standard
wording for responses, but rather to help you develop your
own responses by providing additional explanation of the
NDP policies, their consequences, and why they might be
important to you.
The Campden Society continue to monitor planning
applications for properties in the Chipping Campden and
Broad Campden area. In particular, we look at the impact
on the surrounding environment, neighbouring properties,
potential flooding, parking, traffic flow, the commercial
viability, and the heritage of the town.
We encourage everyone to submit individual views about
planning applications and local strategy to Cotswold District
Council. They are currently conducting two short digital
surveys: one is on their Update of the Local Plan designed
to make it “green to the core” and the other on the Cotswold
Design Code which invites comments on Lady Juliana’s View,
amongst other recent housing developments. The closing
date for these surveys is 24th & 31st March respectively and
can be found at www.cotswold.gov.uk/about-the-council/
having-your-say/consultations/
WOLDS END ORCHARD
‘Bringing In’. If you have been keeping an eye on the
Orchard, you might have seen recent activity cutting back
some of our veterans. We are lucky to have two experts
who are taking on the essential work of ‘bringing in’ the
older tree, where the spread of the branches can become too
much in stormy weather when
laden with fruit. This process
is cutting back the longer
branches thereby bringing the
centre of gravity and fruiting
area closer to the trunk, and
is helpful in prolonging the
tree’s life. We have some
grant funding from Cotswolds
National Landscape to pay
towards employing these
experts, who are also taking
on the more dangerous highlevel
work that volunteers
cannot do.
WORK PARTIES : 2nd & 4th Saturdays 10am -12noon
There are lots of jobs to get done this winter and there are
jobs to fit every level of activity, knowledge and enthusiasm.
Work party mornings are 9th & 23rd March – please add
to your diaries and consider coming along! The Orchard’s
future and health depends on volunteer support.
You can just turn up, but if you want to contact us, email us at
foweo2020@gmail.com or contact us through the Friends of
Wolds End Orchard Facebook page.
WORKSHOPS We have run two winter pruning workshops,
with an evening session on grafting techniques. Look out for
summer pruning, scything, and other sessions – drop us a line
if you are interested.
BLOSSOM DAY A date for your diary – on Saturday 27th
April we will hold Blossom Day, where people are invited to
pay a spring visit to the Orchard and enjoy the beauty of the
blossom. Something to look forward to!
Wolds End Apple Juice is now available to purchase at £3.50
a 75cl bottle (or at a discounted price to Campden Society
members of 6 bottles at £20 or 12 at £40) with free delivery
in the Campden area; to purchase, please contact Geoffrey
White on 0781 500 5879 or geoffreymwhite@gmail.com. In
addition, they can be purchased from Court Barn Museum.
Best wishes from Julianne, Geoff, Susie, Mike, John,
Geoffrey, Steven and Owen
ART IN THE ORCHARD : We have
decided to try an extra day at the beginning
of a week for those of us who find Friday
just too busy. In addition, these sessions
will be longer to allow people to sit
and have lunch in the Orchard. Please
remember that dogs are not allowed in the
orchard. Spring sessions : All 1030 - 1530
: Monday 4th and Friday 15th March. We
will be working towards a small display of work inspired by
the Orchard in the Spring. Christina Kingsmill.
SOCIETY NEWS
Our AGM this year will be held on Thursday 25th April
in the Town Hall. We have two vacancies on the Society’s
main committee. If you would like to consider joining us and
support the charity’s work, do get in touch.
COUNTRY MARKET
Friday 9am – 11am • Lower Town Hall
The Country Market is a co-operative of food and craft
producers that has been providing goods to the town for
over 40 years. All our food is produced in home kitchens
with locally sourced products. All food producers have to
have a food hygiene certificate and comply with national
legislation re labelling and allergens. Our crafters also work
at home. We offer a wonderful array of savoury, sweet and
baked goods, alongside local seasonal fruit, veg, eggs,
marmalade, jams, chutneys and honey. As all the meals
on offer are freshly made the majority can be frozen and
microwaved. Our crafters offer a variety of goods, from
cards for all occasions, knitted children’s garments, to
willow, wooden and sewn items.
This month we will be celebrating St David’s Day on March
1st with all things Welsh, the 8th is Pies, 22nd all things
Irish and we are open on 28th March - Maundy Thursday
from 2pm – 4pm for your Easter goodies, not Good Friday.
Do you have a Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate? We are
currently looking to recruit more cooks and bakers so why
not pop along and have a chat with Angela.
If you are a local and have never visited us, please do come
and see what we have to offer. We also offer an ordering
service and if you are housebound we can deliver, call or
email for an order form.
EVERY THURSDAY 10am - 12noon
At CAMPDEN BAPTIST CHURCH
on the High Street

At St Catharine’s, we work hard, and we prepare the children for healthy and
happy futures. We connect with other people, we are physically active, we
learn new skills, we care about others, and we take the time to pause, and to
give thanks.

We are part of the Chipping
Campden community: Greene
Class pupils have brought joy
to residents at Mill House, and
vice versa, by visiting them to
A group from Y3-Y6 have been
practising for their singing
performance for ‘Young Voices,’
the world’s biggest school
choir! The performance takes
range
share stories and books; place at Resorts Arena,
Children have also made their Birmingham.
much-loved visits to the library;
We are contributing to the Weekly singing with Richard
plans for the Chipping from Longborough Festival
Campden/ Pont d’ Ouilly Opera has been joyous for staff
Festival in August; Our children
are also contributing to the
Town Council’s work on future
and children alike. The
improvement to post-COVID
singing has been remarkable!
plans for the Environment.
Within school, we build
relationships with each otherwhen
things go wrong, which
they inevitably do, we reflect
and work out how to make
things right, and we move on.
We have begun a trial of
reading for pleasure before the
first school bell. Initial
observations are that children
are enjoying relaxing, reading,
and chatting with friends and
siblings about their book
choices, and generally
benefiting from a softer start to
the day.
Our pupil chaplains have been
leading reflective prayer
sessions each Wednesday
across the classes, and peace
has been a frequent topic for
prayer this term.

If you are interested in
securing a place for your
child at St Catharine’s,
please contact 01386
840677 to arrange a visit.
We are proud of every
single day that we offer the
children, and every day is
an ‘Open Day’ at St
Catharine’s. Spaces are
currently available in
Reception and Year 1, with
potentially more availability
from September 2024 in
other year groups.
Year 6 children are benefiting
from weekly swimming
lessons. There are a whole
of abilities within the
group, but children are either
working towards the end of
Primary School expectations,
or they are developing their
stamina, life-saving skills and
fitness.
Forest School is a popular part
of the week for our youngest
pupils. This term they have
planted some new trees to
commemorate the foundation
of the Little Way Catholic
Educational Trust.
Floorball has been a popular
club and older children have
participated in A, B and mixed
league fixtures.
Inter-school cross country
fixtures have resumed. 29
children volunteered to run,
and children all beat their
previous positions, except for
Eleanor of course, who won
again! There were several top
10 finishers!
All children participated in
cricket workshops so that they
are inspired for the summer
term.
Here’s a chance to get fit and have fun!
Join us on Sunday 28th 2024 for our first
the picturesque village of Blockley.
Participants of all ages and running abilities will have a
unique opportunity to take part in a multi-terrain, crosscountry
5K walk or run, taking in fresh air and the natural
beauty of the rolling rural landscape. You don’t have to
come dressed like a chicken, but this is a jolly, family event
with a heartwarming purpose, so we encourage everyone
to have fun at the same time as raising Funds for Campden
Home Nursing.
A 5K walk/run is an achievable and satisfying choice for
families and those new to running. You will be able take
SECRETS OF THE MUSEUM –
EXPLORING COURT BARN’S
ARCHIVES
On full view to the visitors is a wealth of beautiful objects
created by artists influenced by C. R. Ashbee and his talented
artisans of the Guild of Handicraft who came to our restful
and honey-coloured town in 1902. The idyll was short-lived
– many had to leave Chipping Campden between 1906 and
1908 due to the Guild’s liquidation – but those who stayed
left a legacy which encouraged later artists to move here
and continue to create beautiful handmade works of art.
Not on view – but equally important – is a wealth of
archives which reveal information and stories about some
of the artists, but also much about the residents of our town.
Browsing through these boxes has proved to be an exciting
and rewarding volunteering role for two eager researchers.
Court Barn’s archive rooms can hardly be described as
spacious! Two tiny rooms for two rather tall people is a bit
of a squash but the thrill of looking through boxes to gather
fascinating information makes up for it. An
old leather bag caught our attention which
set us off on our first successful talk –
about a gentleman called Fred Hart
whom some of Chipping Campden’s
residents will remember. David Hart
knew a great deal about his relative and
was generous with more information
and trusting us with his precious
albums. Talking to residents who have
good memories is rewarding, underlining
how important it is to keep and maintain
archives. We also paid a visit to Gloucester
Record Office to mine their archives for more information.
Their members of staff were friendly and helpful, and we
made several fascinating discoveries.
Having brought Fred into the limelight we were eager to
mine Court Barn’s archives for further revelations – the
more we dig, the more will be revealed. We are unearthing
many photographs, letters, drawings, articles and objects,
which are already inspiring us to research and produce
more articles and illustrated talks.
People are very kind and eager to give us information.
Archivists must able to distinguish between truth and
flights of fancy, avoid prurient gossip, allow for spelling
discrepancies and be confident that what they elicit is
accurate. We will maintain these high standards in our
research and continue with pleasure to provide more exciting
stories about Court Barn’s small but brilliant collections.
1ST CHIPPING CAMPDEN BROWNIES
1st Chipping Campden Brownies started their Half Term break
with a visit to Cheltenham Ladies Football Club at their Home
Ground at Kayte Lane, Bishops Cleeve.
We had a guided tour of the ground and changing rooms and
offices before the Brownies joined the team in the tunnel to be
their mascots to lead them out onto the pitch for their game
against Ipswich Town.
The game ended in a 2-2 draw, it was a very exciting experience
for the girls who attended.
Then on Tuesday - Shrove Tuesday - they had the chance
to come to the Baden Powell Hall, and mix, cook and eat
traditional lemon and sugar Pancakes.
18 Brownies came and really enjoyed themselves, for some of
them frying a pancake was something they hadn’t done before.
ST JAMES’ CHURCH REPAIR CAFE
FEBRUARY 2024 REPORT
This is the third year we’ve been running, and perhaps one or
two testimonials might say more than a report.
I can’t believe you’ve managed to piece the doll back
together! I thought it would be beyond redemption and am
astonished by your skill In making it whole again. Thank
you very much. It was my father’s and must be early 1930s
I guess. It’s lovely having a keepsake of his childhood,
even though I don’t remember ever hearing he’d been in
the scouts and I still think it’s hideous! I know he would
be impressed himself as he also loved using his hands - he
ended up as City Engineer for Dundee.
And I’m delighted you were able to reconstruct the mug too,
as it was my great granny’s, and I was very sore that it got
damaged last year when I decorated with flowers for the
jubilee. I really revere old family possessions that have been
handed down, so thanks again for repairing these for me.
Alison
Many thanks everyone for mending my ‘treasures’ and now
useful item, and meeting you all.
Carol
So grateful to Tony at the Repair Cafe for attaching my pink
Bassett’s severed ear! In real life I have a one eyed Bichon
and a three and a half legged Maltese/Westie so its odd
and sweet to have one complete dog! Also very grateful for
delicious lemon drizzle cake and warming cup of coffee from
the super friendly cafe team.
Marion
The above items were quite an eclectic selection – a 1930’s
plaster doll (note the sentimental value here far outweighs any
other value – even appearance) a Queen Victoria Diamond
jubilee mug, a silver necklace needing a new clasp and
replacement chain, a Japanese eggshell tea cup, a hand held
Karcher wet vac, and a ‘Shirley Bassett’ plaster dog. So from
heirloom to household sums it up
A similar mixed bag came in this time – one of our repairers
meticulously reconstructed a roller blind mechanism on
the spot – and took away an acoustic guitar. As always our
electricals table was kept busy with lamps, radios, vacs and
the like
The principle is - repair - renew - recycle - don’t throw it out.
We’ve saved quite a bit from landfill!
But to feature this time are two ‘toy hospital’ items. One of
fairly recent vintage – Christmas decorations, a reindeer about
8 years old, and a snowman of about 18 years of age – with
a note that a toddler has pulled a leg off each item – now
pictured here restored (hips replaced!). Awaiting repair is the
larger teddy pictured from the 1950’s – missing an eye and
needing some attention to his nose. He is temporarily seated
next to ‘Peter’ – the repairers own teddy of the same date
We are always aware of when a specialist should be used and
recommend professionals where appropriate. We have details
of clock and watch specialists, toy and doll repairers, and
many others
The next repair cafe at
the Church Rooms, on
the corner of Church
Street and Calf Lane, is
on Saturday March 9th,
10am to 12.30pm.
THIS WILL BE A
CLOCK SPECIAL
We are expecting Francis
Bennett (The Cotswold
Clockmaker) to join us for
the morning
He will not be making any charge for inspections and simple
on the spot repairs, and he will be happy to give estimates if
workshop time is needed.
Dates for 2024 (always the second Saturday of the month) are
March 9th, April 13th, May 11th, June 8th, July 13th,
August 10th, September 14th, October 12th, November 9th,
December 14th
WOULD-BE REPAIRERS - GET IN TOUCH we’d always
be pleased to add you to our team
Of course as well as repairs – there is plenty of opportunity for
repairers and clients alike to enjoy the delicious cakes, coffee
and tea – and all free of charge as are the repairs (materials
only at cost) – donations invited to cover expenses.
Perhaps it’s a hobby at the moment but could you put your
skills to community use?
VALE PRESS FSC CERTIFICATION
RENEWED FOR FURTHER 5 YEARS
Vale Press Ltd are pleased to report that, once again, we
have passed our FSC audit with flying colours and that
certification has now been extended for a further five years.
Vale Press Sales Director, Edward Stowe, explains: “The
Forest Stewardship Council – known as FSC – process
certifies that forest-sourced products, such as paper originate
from sustainable forests.
The process ensures integrity of the supply chain through a
‘chain-of-custody’ which Vale Press are an essential part of.
Our staff at Vale are always
pleased to help when our clients
request that we add the FSC
logo with our unique certificate
details to the artwork for jobs
which we print for them. It
confirms compliance and
demonstrates environmental
responsibility. And, of course,
the Bulletin is printed on FSC
certified paper!”
TOPS Garden Centre arranged a free collection of
Christmas trees from the kerbsides of Mickleton in
early January.
The trees have now been shredded - and here’s the heap.
The heap is now being left to ‘sweat’ a bit to start the
early stages of composting. The material will then be
used as a mulch on a local tree-planting scheme.
The mulch will help keep moisture in and weeds away
- helping to give the
newly planted trees a
thriving start!
The Christmas tree
collection was very
successful and TOPS
are hoping to extend
the service to Chipping
Campden and other
local villages next
The Bulletin’s
monthly columnist:
Submit and share alternative wording
It’s an election year and I’m already bored with it all. Politics and politicking are
ghastly as I fear it’s a race to the bottom with promises of tax cuts combined with
a failure of foresight by all concerned to properly invest for the future. I think
that’s called electile dysfunction.
I’m not talking about money alone, but the hearts and minds investment made
in the important things, manufacturing industry, traditional and bleeding edge,
all public services, financial institutions and in the services sector which together
form the glue bonding us.
If there were to be a call to arms, as some were suggesting a few weeks ago,
I suspect the very people who would be expected to swell the ranks would
be reluctant to do so in any way similar to previous generations as they feel
betrayed by the ‘system’ which was born in post war times to keep our fellow
countrymen united. One must feel something is worth fighting for but the gossip
around suggests a deepening sense that our politicians are out of touch. The
crisis surrounding the lack of affordable homes, waiting lists, inflation, all punish
rather than reassure. Some watchers of our society speculate that our three-class
system has become extended with the unwelcome addition of an underclass.
As I sat down to write this, I sought inspiration firstly, by looking into my halfdrunk
mug of coffee and then onto the Chipping Campden Town Council website,
yes, I was that desperate. I stumbled onto the section which deals with planning
and the (NDP) neighbourhood development plan. My call for inspiration was
answered!
The Cotswolds is a very desirable place to be, and as increasing numbers of
retirees move to the area, so their values and opinions permeate. The NDP is
a great example of middle-class thinking being presented as something in
‘everyone’s’ best interests. It is not. There is a paragraph in a green box on the
response form which sets out the vision of Chipping Campden and invites readers
to submit and share alternative wording. I would encourage you to do just that.
You see lost in all the sanitised 59 words is the reality that farming, tourism,
education, retail, trades, and care homes need good people, sadly earning close
to the minimum wage, at the heart of our community. Those people need to live
here not in the unaffordable gated community which the area is fast becoming as
a result of the influence of new, on a good pension, middle class residents. I think
words like creativity, culture and commerce plays to the out of touch Campden
Society types who, via groupthink ‘guilt’ the rest of us into believing yesteryear
is infinitely more preferable than progress. A knackered old orchard might be
nice to have but it doesn’t help drive the local economy or care for the health
needs of the community. An accessible, well-resourced doctor’s surgery – not
ramps but the availability of actual appointments with clinicians, when we need
them, a sort of health care on demand type service would be novel and what the
NHS was intended to provide.
The Chancellor is considering what to do with ‘fiscal headroom’ and how to best
woo voters. I suggest don’t reduce taxes but use the cash to get hospital managers
to sort out waiting times in A & E and the horror of queuing ambulances. There’s
something incredibly weird about the situation that I can get an appointment,
obtain medicine, have scans and x-rays, undergo complex surgery at a vets for
my dog more easily than for myself in the NHS.
Enjoy the races!
NOTES FROM THE MEETING
OF CHIPPING CAMPDEN TOWN
COUNCIL
For full copies of the confirmed minutes -
see Town Council website
9th January 2024, Town Hall
Key to Councillors: Michael Haines (MH), Patrick Spink
(PS), Teresa Newman (TN), Chairman Chris Jones (CJ),
Liz Hodges (LH), Lutti Bates (LB), Janet Wilkinson (JW),
Mark Benson (MB), Paul Welford (PC), Nic Cary (NC) Julie
Williams (Deputy Town Clerk - TC).
Lynden Stowe (LS), Gina Blomefield (GB), Tom Stowe (TS)
Present: Cllrs CJ, PS, MH, LB, JW, LH, TN, MB, PW
In attendance: TC, GB, TS and 11 members of the public.
Apologies: NC
Minutes: Subject to the correction of one typographical error
at Item 4, it was resolved that the minutes of the Town Council
meeting held on 12 December 2023 be approved and signed by
the chairman.
Confidential meeting notes from 12 December 2023 meeting
were received and agreed as a true record of discussions.
Clerk’s Report: The Deputy Town Clerk gave a verbal report
to council.
Public Session: To provide members of the public / press with
the opportunity to comment on items on the agenda or raise items
for future consideration. In accordance with Standing Orders
this will not exceed 20 minutes and three minutes per person.
It was resolved to suspend standing orders at 19:38.
Being a new councillor, PW requested the public introduced
themselves before speaking, subject to feeling comfortable
doing so.
The following comments/questions were received from members
of the public:
• Temporary road closure of Church Street granted for National
Grid from 22 - 24 January inclusive. Request to try and get the
dates changed to February half-term.
• Church Street parking on double yellow lines – school
collection time is diabolical. Cars are being parked on double
yellow lines opposite the Alms-houses for four continuous days.
The situation has got worse in last twelve months. Yellow lines
need to be policed. Information passed to LS.
• Concerns were expressed that there was no mention of the
budget on the agenda. Council advised an extraordinary meeting
is being arranged - date to be published once agreed, but likely
to be 23 January 2024.
• Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding should not
be considered as part of the income. This is wrong and false
accounting. The Town Council spend is currently in surplus and
if CIL money is taken out the council would be in deficit.
• Grant to the Peelers Trust in the budget has not yet been made.
Expenditure has been made from own reserves. Commitment in
the budget for £10k grant.
• Old Police Station gutters require clearing. Refer to Peelers
Trust.
• Could the 30mph speed limit could be extended from Dyers
Lane to the crossroads? It was appreciated this query was a
Gloucestershire County Council Highways issue.
To be referred to the Management Committee for consideration.
• If the new councillor is requesting the public to introduce
themselves, can the same consideration apply for councillors
having name plates? Consideration to be given to the request.
• Regarding the traffic calming considerations for Westington
and Back Ends, it seems a shame that the Town Council is
sweeping it aside and saying it is nothing to do with the Town
Council.
• The car park at the Recreation Ground is in an awful condition.
Could the CIL funding be used for repairs?
• The Town Council is again going into another private session
relating to staffing matters. £17K has been committed to legal
expenses and still no statement has been made to the public.
• Recycling of blister packs – there is no provision at the
pharmacy, doctor’s surgery or Jecca’s House.
The Town Council awarded a grand of £500 to the doctor’s
surgery in 2023 to contribute to the purchase of blister boxes at
a cost of £200 each.
• Can anything be done about the increase in the number of
parking cones being used by High Street residents to secure
parking spaces?
• What can be done about the electric cable being trailed from a
letter box in Leysbourne to charge an electric vehicle? This is a
trip hazard to pedestrians.
• What is happening with residents parking permits?
• The condition of the pavement outside Woolstaples Hall looks
as if the tree roots are pushing through the slabs. To be reported
to Gloucester County Council Highways Department.
It was resolved to reinstate standing orders at 19:57.
County Councillor’s Report: Cllr LS sent his apologies and
did not attend the meeting. A written report was not provided as
there was nothing substantial to report.
District Councillor’s Report: A verbal report was received
from Cllrs. GB and TS. Both councillors to forward written
reports to the deputy clerk following the meeting.
Planning: Minutes from the Planning committee meeting, held
on 12 December 2023, were received and noted. A verbal update
following the meeting held on 9 January 2024 was also provided.
Finance, Standards & Audit:
• It was agreed to defer approval of the financial statements for
the Town Council Bank Accounts to the next council meeting as
the bank statements had not been received.
• It was resolved to approve list of payments to be made January.
• The CIL income was received and noted – Appendix B
refers. CIL funding already received will be ring-fenced whilst
consideration is given to which projects the monies will fund.
• Three anonymised options were presented to the council. It
was resolved to appoint Option B - Gloucestershire Association
of Parish and Town Councils (GAPTC) - to be the Internal
Auditor for financial year 2023/24, at a cost of £275 (VAT not
applicable), plus mileage.
Traffic Management: A verbal update was received from LH,
Committee Membership: It was resolved to appoint Paul
Welford to Planning, Traffic Management and FSA Committees.
The Terms of Reference were not reviewed and deferred to a
future meeting.
Training: It was resolved to authorise the Deputy Town Clerk
to receive Clerk: The Knowledge training, delivered by GAPTC
and split over two sessions. Part 1 – The Essentials on 23 January
@ a cost of £45 and Part 2 – A Miscellany on 13 February @ a
cost of £45 (LGA 1972 S111)
St. James’ Church yard and West End Terrace Cemetery: A
table of five anonymised options was presented to the council.
It was resolved to appoint Option 3, Memsafe, to undertake
memorial headstone safety testing for 2024 at both sites, at a
cost of £3,723.25 ex VAT.
West End Terrace Cemetery: It was resolved to appoint The
CDS Group at a cost of £2,350 ex VAT to carry out a scoping
survey and mapping of the area in order to secure further plots.
Twinning Association Community Event: It was resolved
to set-up a Twinning Association Working Party to include PS,
LH, CJ & MH. Event funding to be considered at budget setting
meeting in January (date to be confirmed).
Visitor Information Centre: It was resolved to include a
formal proposal for funding to be submitted for consideration at
budget setting meeting in January (date to be confirmed).
Climate Emergency: It was agreed to re-form the Climate
Change Working Party. Members are to include Cllrs LH, LB &
30

PW. The first meeting will be held in February 2024. Interested
non-members will be invited to join the working party. To be
advertised locally and on the council’s website.
Future Agenda Items: To note items for future consideration
and not for discussion.
Reduce the crown by 1m so that the current 8m high x 9m spread becomes
7m high x 7m spread. Also thin the crown by 20%. No pruning has been
undertaken on this tree for at least 7 years. Its spread has encroached on
the adjacent mountain ash trees (marked B5 and B6 on the sketch plan)
and is damaging their development. This can be clearly seen in photo
thinning to address crossing branches, to open the tree to sunlight and to
encourage better quality fruiting. Mountain ash - marked A2 on the sketch
The State Pension –
Do you know it’s worth?
Written by Keri Carter, Certified Financial Planner TM Practitioner
When helping clients to plan for the future, it’s important to
include all forms of income likely to used in retirement. Often,
the State Pension is disregarded or forgotten. This could be as
a result of those who were “contracted out” and so assumed
they didn’t qualify, were not aware of when this applied or
those who were under the impression it was so little it was
not worth bothering about. Contrary to this, the State Pension
can provide some valuable guaranteed income on which to
build through careful planning.
That said, we were surprised to read that research from
retirement specialist Just Group reveals that more than a third
of retirees did not check their State Pension forecast before
they retired despite 1.2 million households relying on the
State Pension as their primary source of income in retirement.
Of those surveyed;
• 38% of retirees didn’t check their State Pension forecast
before retiring
• This rose to 46% among those who retired earlier than they
expected to
• A fifth (17%) of retirees who checked their forecast found it
more than £250 lower than expected
The survey of more than 1,000 retired and semi-retired people
aged over 55 found that four in ten (38%) had not checked
their forecast, rising to 40% among those who had not yet
reached State Pension Age (55-64 year olds) and 46% for those
who claimed to have retired earlier than they had expected.
Among the two-thirds of retirees who checked their forecasted
State Pension income, nearly a fifth (17%) said that it was – at
a minimum – £250 less per year than they were expecting.
On the other hand, one-in-ten (9%) retirees said that it was
at least £250 more per year than they were expecting. When
people actually started to receive their State Pension, nine out
of ten (90%) retirees said that what they received in reality
was either the same as or more than the amount they were
forecasted to receive.
The State Pension is the bedrock of retirement income for
millions of retired households. It’s easy to see why people
may assume they’ll simply get the full State Pension, but for
many people this won’t be the case. It’s really important that
all retirees have an idea of their forecasted benefits in order
that they avoid the chance that their State Pension is less than
they thought.
The Government offers a State Pension forecast service and
we urge anyone approaching retirement to use it – ideally in
advance of beginning to retire. It will tell you if you are likely to
receive less State Pension than you thought and that will give
you the opportunity to take steps to increase what you will
actually receive.
There are a number of factors that affect the total value of
an individual’s State Pension. People may be missing National
Insurance credits because they were claiming benefits whilst
they were ill, unemployed or for other such reasons. Going
back to fill these gaps in your National Insurance record or
buying extra credits can top up the State Pension you’re
entitled to receive. For many, there is now a limit of 6 years
in which you can backdate your contributions. However, if in
advance of your retirement, there may be other ways in which
you can boost these through voluntary contributions.
Getting an accurate, up to date picture of what income you
can expect in retirement is an important first step in planning
a secure financial retirement.
To request a State Pension forecast go to https://www.gov.uk/
check-state-pension or contact the Future Pension Centre on
the helpline 0800 731 0175.
TRAVEL WITH MERV
As we arrive at Spring and a new season is upon us, I have
also made some new and exciting changes to my business.
From 1st March my Travel business will be going forward
as Travel Four Seasons and I have refreshed my advert
above to showcase this new venture.
“What does this mean for me?” I hear you say. Well, apart
from the change of name the changes are minimal yet very
all very positive. My customers will still only deal with
me, my phone number will stay the same, the only changes
you will notice is my email and website address and new
documentation.
I have more freedom, choice, and flexibility. I can offer
my customers more products than ever before, I have more
freedom to tailor trips than I did before and I can deal with
virtually any travel company, hotel, cruise line, airline etc...
the list goes on and on!
Every booking and everyone will receive the same financial
protection as before and everything I book with be secured
by our ATOL and TTA Trust account.
I am currently contacting all my customers to advise of
these changes, if you would like to know more, please get
in touch.
I recently arranged a lovely upmarket barge cruise/holiday
to Burgandy. A maximum of 22 customers on a super barge
along the rivers in this beautiful part of France. Travelling
both ways by train, not only is this a more sustainable way
to travel I would never have access to this barge cruise in
the past.
Another new holiday that I have just arranged is a small
yacht style cruise around Croatia. Embark on an expedition
across Croatia, splitting your time between relaxing onboard
a luxury yacht cruise and exploring the natural beauty of
the Dalmatian Coastline. Seven-night cruise on the fourstar
yacht cruising along the Dalmatian coast, one of the
world’s most dramatic landscapes, studded with beautifully
preserved and atmospheric Venetian influenced medieval
towns and some of Europe’s clearest waters, sail between
smaller islands and ports, allowing spectacular coastal views
normally inaccessible to larger cruise liners. With no more
than 20 cabins. Half board meals included. These cruises
start from just £1749.00. I can help arrange your flights too.
This is a great option for solo travellers too, as the single
supplement can be quite favourable on certain dates.
Thank you to those of you that have already started your
travels in 2024 with me and Travel Four Seasons and I look
forward to helping more of you in the coming months and
years.
EBRINGTON & DISTRICT
GARDENING CLUB
Our talk on the 13th February’s was entitled ‘Penstemons and
Other Summer Sun Lovers’ . The speaker was Julie Ritchie
of Hoo House Nursery near Tewkesbury. She has run this
nursery since 1986 with everything grown peat free since
2001. Hoo House Nursery has been offering perennials and
alpines for over 30 years.
The nursery maintains a list of about 800 varieties which,
although not all available at one time, they aim to have the
majority of them on offer around the beginning of May.
They pride themselves on having a good range of plants
for every garden situation and can offer advice
and suggestions for anyone in need of a little
inspiration.
Penstemon is a large genus of roughly 280
species of flowering plants mostly found in North
America. They come in a variety of colours - a
very popular one is ‘Firebrand’. They grow well
particularly in well-drained soil. They can be propagated by
taking cuttings.
Other ‘sunlovers’ she introduced us to amongst others were
nepeta, salvias, achillea, agapanthus, crocosmia and sedums.
Her talk was illustrated by beautiful slides.
The meeting was followed by the AGM. All the officers were
thanked for their hard work during the year. Our Chairman
particularly thanked the Drinkwater family for their continued
support.
Our March talk is about ‘Borde Hill - a plant hunter’s
paradise’ and will be given by Vanessa Berridge.
On 13th April we will be holding our Annual Spring Show in
Washbrook Barn in Ebrington.
Our membership is based on Ebrington but we have members
from around the district including Chipping Campden,
Quinton, Hampton, Shipston, Paxford, the Hidcotes and
Charingworth. New members always welcome.
As readers will know from last
month’s Bulletin, I have an
enduring battle with molluscs
in my garden, so it is with great
anticipation that I’m looking forward to hearing Sally Oates
from Dillycot tell us how to overcome pests with hand tools
and organic techniques, when she visits Mickleton Gardening
Club on Wednesday 20 March 2024.* This will be part of a
broader talk on ‘How to Win on your Allotment’ returning an
unloved plot into full production … in time to enter the fruits
(and veg) of your labour in our Summer Show.
If allotments or veg gardens aren’t your thing, then you may
prefer to join the Inter-Gardening Club Quiz, which this year is
hosted by our friends at Blockley Gardening Club on the same
evening.
Leaping forward to Wednesday 19 June 2024, Mickleton
Gardening Club has it’s answer to Campden Open Gardens.
Each year we try to vary the month and ask different club
members (and some kind non-members) to open their gardens
in Mickleton for members to visit and plunder ideas and
surreptitious cuttings.
I’m mentioning Open Gardens now, because YOU might feel
tempted to open your garden... and it really is a joy to do. We
seldom have an ‘end goal’ in gardening, so having a date for
lots of friends to visit and heap praise on you for your pristine
borders, croquet-like lawn or wildlife haven of a pond, makes
all the work worthwhile. It’s quite an ego boost! It’s especially
interesting in Mickleton where the older, mature gardens are
juxtaposed the new; sizes, themes and designs vary whilst most
owners work with clay soil and armies of molluscs.
Please contact us through www.mickletongc.org.uk to find out
more about opening your garden, or of course, come along to
one of our meetings on the third Wednesday in the month, at
King George’s Hall, Mickleton, 7pm for 7.30pm start.
*At our Wednesday 20th March meeting, Rob will be bringing
some of his amazing bird and bat boxes and other handcrafted
wooden habitats for garden visitors.
of Charlie Chaplin.
be held at the Butchers Arms where we will be provided with
food.
We will be recommencing our very popular walking group
in March.
Craft Session - Easter Rag Wreaths.
Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at
7:30pm at King George’s Hall, Mickleton. New members are
THE MICKLETON SOCIETY
PICTURES AROUND MICKLETON
FEBRUARY MEETING 2024
An exceptional number of members came to The Three Ways
House Hotel on Wednesday the 7th to hear and see Terry
Richardson, writer and photographer, talk about and show us
his work.
Terry, from Willersey, provides articles and photographs for a
range of magazines and trade journals particularly concerned
with agriculture and rural affairs. He also sells his fine art
photography nationally and internationally. For the purposes
of the Society talk he had cast his eye and camera around
Mickleton and surrounding hills illustrating what he considered
the ‘pastoral feel’ of the village. He showed stunning photos of
our St Lawrence’s Church, a local garden and the flowers around
the Manor. His photographs showed off the crops growing in
the allotments and he even photographed ‘a local’gathering in
his harvest of potatoes. Our local butcher, David Moore, also
featured, especially as Terry is a customer.
Terry imparted some tips to budding photographers: patience
to avoid unwanted objects in the picture of Fish Hill without
36

cars; the virtues of a steady hand [or tripod] and a sharp
focus to capture the essence of the subject; going out of focus
creating depth or movement. He highlighted some common
misconceptions: a cloudless sky can be less interesting than
sky broken by clouds or the branches of a tree. Similarly a dark
night sky and bright moon can be bettered by a late evening
sky and moon to bring out the details of the moon’s surface.
All these points he illustrated by some amazing photos of the
stars and the ‘Milky Way’ although it was evident that some
members didn’t relish standing in Willersey Churchyard in the
middle of the night to get these shots.
Finally he illustrated the effects created by photo manipulation
software and illustrated that by showing a carless Mickleton
High Street into which Terry had inserted a horse and cart from
another photo to give the High Street a nineteenth century feel.
He concluded and took questions about the cameras and lenses
he used. His talk was rewarded with a hearty round of applause
and members viewed more of his work on display.
The second half of the meeting was taken up with the
announcement of the publication of Cotswold District Council’s
Local Plan revision, Committee member Geoff Field giving a
summary of the plan and how it can be viewed online. This
was followed by a brief presentation by member and Parish
Councillor Geoff Mayling. The Parish Council are due to
debate it at their next meeting on the 28th February, which the
public are welcome to attend, but members were encouraged
to read the Plan for themselves and give the District Council
their views.
The next talk at the Society will be on 6th March when John
Longman, Master Cheese Maker [formerly at Daylesford] will
talk about A Lifetime in Cheese. The meeting is at 7.30pm at
The Three Ways House Hotel, refreshments and raffle as usual.
GARDEN NOTES FOR MARCH
Prime shopping time this month, as new lines will be arriving at your local plant
centre every few days. Go often, if you can, so not to miss what you want; but
at the same time there is the annual warning that many plants should not go
outside until temperatures are high enough, and should only be bought if you
have somewhere to keep them in the house, greenhouse or conservatory with
adequate warmth and light. Buy early for maximum choice, but plant early and
you may have to go and buy replacements. Unfortunately my crystal ball does
not advise on weather, and there is always a large element of guess-work.
Both Mothering Sunday and Easter fall in March this year. A bunch of flowers
is commonly welcome on Mothering Sunday, but they go over so quickly, even
with the best care. Perhaps you might instead go for a flowering pot plant, or for
a plant or flowering shrub for the garden which will give pleasure every year at
about this time (again depending on the weather). You might even find a plant
which can be enjoyed in flower indoors this year and then go out: bulbs would
be one obvious choice.
Good Friday is the traditional potato-planting day. Seed potatoes are available
now: lay them out in trays somewhere light but frost-free to start ‘chitting’,
starting to sprout and make a quicker start once planted. If you can’t plant all
your potatoes at once, the main-crops should go
in first, and the earlies follow. It sounds wrong,
but the reason is that the main crops require more
weeks of growth from planting to maturity.
I read the other day that as recently as during the
last war there was quite a shift from bread to potato
for filling hungry mouths. It saved on imports, with
all the enemy threats to shipping. Some wartime
recipes suggested using a proportion of mashed
potato as a substitute for flour. A book by a wellknown
organic gardener of a few decades ago tells
me that an acre of potatoes will feed as many people
as two acres of wheat; and that bread is 21/2 times
as fattening as potato. In an earlier age, William
Cobbett (1763-1835) thought potatoes should be
fed to pigs rather than people, and reckoned that
they were the cause of ‘slovenliness, filth, misery
and slavery’ (why?). So potatoes are to blame for
my laziness and my reluctance to do housework.
A snap-shot: as I write a week or so into February I have the following in flower
outside: Narcissus “Soleil d’Or”, Sarcococca Confusa, Viburnum Bodnantense
“Dawn” (these three strongly fragrant), Lonicera Fragrantissima (disappointinly
less so, despite the name), early Dutch irises, Iris Unguicularis, snow-drops,
crocuses, Cyclamen Coum, Anemone Blanda, Pulmonaria, pansies and violas,
Hellebores, Winter Jasmine, Bergenia, heather and Erysimum (the smallish
perennial wallflower). The list lengthens steadily, as do the evenings. Albeit by
fits and starts, spring is on its way. Yippee!
