William ‘Bill’ Howells served in the R.A.F. during the war. Originally he taught both Art and P.T. at Chipping Campden
School, where his wife, Pam, also taught History. He became Head of Art and of Hicks House.
After living in Ebrington, they moved to Mickleton in the early sixties into the newly-built Ballards Close. A keen golfer
at Broadway, Bill also played the organ regularly at St Lawrence Church, Mickleton and at Campden Masonic Lodge. He
enjoyed his sports-car, an open-top MGB, and regularly challenged himself to see if he could get the car to ‘free-wheel’all
the way down from Kingcombe to the town square!*
After retiring from teaching, Bill worked part-time for Jackson-Stops & Staff in the High Street, printing their brochures
which included some of his fine calligraphy.
MONTHLY NEWS FLASH
Staff
We would like to welcome our new Advanced Nurse
Practitioner, Corinne Beirne, who is now working four
days in the practice to assist patients. She is available for on
the day urgent care and bookable appointments for certain
conditions and follow up care.
We are in the process of moving Dr Degnan’s patients
to a new GP. Reception can advise you of your new GP
when booking appointments. We politely ask patients not
to telephone just to find out the name of the GP as this will
overwhelm our telephone system and reception team. We
would like to reassure patients that we will continue to offer
continuity of care with the increased flexibility of offering
our Advanced Nurse Practitioner clinics to help with routine
appointment waits.
New telephone system
We have changed to a new telephone system, with new
features to help improve the patient telephone journey. Our
main telephone number, 01386 841894, remains the same.
Thank you for your patience during this change.
Recycling boxes for medication blister packs
We received a grant last year from the Town Council for
some recycling boxes for patients to use to recycle their
blister packs. However, these were so popular that we have
now used all of the funding from the grant. Therefore, we
have ceased the scheme. If anyone would like to support
further funding of this initiative, please contact the practice.
Staff training dates
Please note that the practice will be closed between 1.30pm
and 5pm on the following dates this year for whole team
staff training:
Thursday 16th May
Tuesday 9th July
Wednesday 11th September
Thursday 14th November
For emergencies, a GP is available via the normal surgery
number. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
First contact Physiotherapy
As a member of North Cotswold Primary Care Network,
we work together with local practices to offer clinics which
would not normally be available to General Practice. These
clinics cover travel vaccinations and advice, our Mental
Health Practitioner, Women’s health clinics and our new
First contact physiotherapist. Patients with musculoskeletal
pain and symptoms will be booked into the first contact
physiotherapist to provide early access to assessment and
diagnosis. This is not a course of physiotherapy. These are
longer appointments and he will liaise with the GP’s for
any investigations, treatment and follow up. Patients can be
booked directly by our receptionists and can be telephone or
face to face assessment.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
We welcome your contributions.
Email: editor@campdenbulletin.co.uk
Dear Editor
I would like to bring to the attention of your readers that the
town’s Annual Assembly will be held in the Town Hall on
Tuesday 23rd April at 7.30pm.
Although this meeting is arranged by the Town Council, it is
not a Council meeting, but one for residents to question the
Council or to raise any issues of interest or concern to our
community. If you have a question or wish to give a report
to the meeting, either put your point in writing to the Town
Clerk (email: clerk@chippingcampden-tc.gov.uk) or just
come and speak at the meeting.
The Annual Assembly is the one time of the year when
residents can have their say, so please come, even if just to
listen to the points raised and the discussion.
Yours, John Ellis
Dear Editor
On 13th March we went to the National Theatre to see a sold
out matinee performance of Nye, the astonishing new play
by Tim Price about the foundation of the NHS. We were
so impressed we will be celebrating St George’s Day and
Shakespeare’s birthday on 23rd April by going to Cidermill
Theatre’s Live Streaming of Nye: an opportunity to see the
play again, and the actors close-up. Nye is a humorous and
deeply moving story, Michael Sheen’s portrayal of Nye Bevan
is a tour de force. The rest of the cast is superb especially Tony
Jayawardena playing both the doctor and Winston Churchill,
and Sharon Small as Jennie Lee. The staging is ingenious, and
the pace tremendous. For anyone who can remember the early
years of the NHS, Nye is a must see; for those who don’t it is
a revelation how, with one man’s vision, and the political will,
Britain’s finest hour was arguably 5th July 1948.
With best wishes,
Vicky and Charlie Bennett
Dear Editor
What have retirees and incomers ever done for us?
JB said in his column last month, ‘...as increasing number
of retirees move to the area, so their values and opinions
permeate.’ The assumption there is, that all ‘retirees’ are of
the same opinion and that their ‘values and opinions’ aren’t
good for Campden.
He is seemingly holding them responsible for quite a lot,
including the heinous use of words like ‘creativity, culture
and commerce’, which, according to JB, ‘plays to the out
of touch Campden Society types who, via groupthink ‘guilt’
the rest of us into believing yesteryear is infinitely more
preferable than progress!’ As there is no rationale given
for this statement, it’s hard to understand what JB actually
means. To me the Campden Society represents the views of
its members - people who come from all walks of life; locals
and newcomers alike, and they, and others, are fighting hard
for more affordable housing in Campden - to use the word
‘groupthink’, shows that JB doesn’t know anything about
how the Campden Society works or what its remit is.
However, it is blatantly obvious that a balanced community,
in terms of age, socio economic groups, and skill sets are
needed to ensure we have a thriving, lively, economically
viable town. Unfortunately, planning law is dictated by central
government and ultimately, whilst brownfield sites are being
land-banked by developers, thus creating a false picture of
land shortages, our greenbelt land will remain at risk and only
profitable, ‘executive’ homes will be built, and not the muchneeded
affordable homes.
As to the ‘knackered old orchard’ – evidently, he hasn’t noticed
that it isn’t ‘knackered’ anymore. Notwithstanding all its
obvious merits, it is an integral part of a much larger wildlife
corridor and a unique habitat for flora and fauna. As insects are
a critical factor in the survival of humankind, maybe those of
us who fought to save the orchard are more forward thinking
than those who would have seen it developed.
JB then goes on to mention the NDP, quoting bits and pieces
from it in his column. I’m not sure what he is referring to, as
Campden’s Draft NDP, hasn’t been published yet. Once it is,
it will be open to consultation, when all residents will be able
to make their views known. Sadly, many people won’t bother
and if a skewed view of Campden’s needs permeate it, then
we only have ourselves to blame.
As a local (though I hate to differentiate), what I see in
Chipping Campden is a wealth of ‘retirees’ and ‘outsiders’,
who put their hearts and souls into this community to help
make it a safer and supportive community to live in. Many
of them give their expertise, enthusiasm and money to this
community, and without that we would be all the poorer for it.
It is ‘retirees’ and ‘outsiders’, alongside locals, who run the
Community Support Hub, the charities, the Ukrainian support
group, the clubs and societies, who clear the Cam to prevent
the town from flooding and, many others who work tirelessly
behind the scenes on other projects, with little to no thanks.
Campden also has 4 new fully qualified first responders -
all ‘outsiders’ and mainly retired, who have stepped up as
volunteers for the benefit of us all. Will JB turn down their
help in an emergency, or will he thank them for coming to
Campden and making such a big difference? I hope it’s the
latter.
Dear Editor
It’s sad to see JB (whoever he or she is) using a column in the
Bulletin to disparage the hard work and efforts of a fine group
of local people, who are committed to keeping a small part of
our town, an area free from development.
Graham Keyte
Dear Editor
I live locally. May I propose for the residents through the
Campden Bulletin a solution to the grumbles about there
being insufficient parking and suggest that as there are 30
spaces in the Town or Market Square 15 of which could easily
be designated for free use for residents of Chipping Campden
with a ticket for their car number plate to be displayed for
daily parking of up to two hours could be issued by the
Chipping Campden Town Trust.
COMMUNITY LUNCHES
APRIL TO JUNE
We hope that everyone who has attended the Lent Lunches
since Ash Wednesday has enjoyed them. The support for
the various charitable causes has been amazing. And the
atmosphere each week has been friendly and convivial,
while enjoying some delicious soups, bread and various
cheeses. After Easter, the Community Lunches are back
during the late Spring – starting on 9th April. The dates until
mid June are:
9th and 23rd April, 14th and 28th May and 11th June. Then
there will be a break for the summer.
Times remain as usual – 12.30pm until 2.30pm with the
doors open earlier for coffee from 11.45am.
The lunches are free of charge, so please do not feel obliged
to pay anything at all. However, people who do make a
donation have asked what these funds are used for. The
proceeds pay for some of the regular food costs with any
surplus going to The Church Rooms funds for heating costs
and the refurbishment of the main hall. This has started to
take place with new chairs arriving in March (the old ones
were taken to Nigeria!) and painting and decorating in early
April. We hope that the hall will look bright and fresh when
you return in April.
SCUTTLEBROOK WAKE
UPDATE...
Scuttlebrook Wake is on June 1st this
year, and we will publish our full
programme in the May edition. For
now, here are the latest updates from your committee:
Window Competition
This year’s theme is: ‘100 years of Disney’
which we hope will generate lots of great ideas for the
competition. Forms will be posted along the parade
route in April with details of what you need to do. In
the meantime, why not get planning?
Fancy Dress and Floats
We would like to make an early call to start thinking
about entering the fancy dress parade and competition
this year. It’s a fantastic part of the day’s proceedings
with no fee, no theme and no forms to fill out. Just
turn up to enjoy the atmosphere and the chance to win
some cash prizes, cups and awards. Whether you are
a veteran fancy dress competitor, or someone who
has never considered it before, why not start chatting
to friends and family about what you could do to get
involved this year? Details of when and where to be
will be in next month’s edition.
The Scuttlemarket
This year will see the inclusion of a small market on the
High Street between the fairground and the live music
outside the Lygon Arms. There are still a few pitches
available, so if you are interested in having one, then
please contact our Vice-Chairman, Jos Robinson, at:
scuttlemarket@gmail.com.
Scuttlefest
We once again have several great live music acts for
June 1st as part of the Scuttlebrook Wake celebrations.
This year’s line up includes:
Boe Jigge, Amber Liadan, WLDFLWRS and
Greg Brice
Listening to the live music with a glass of something
cold from the Lygon Arms is surely one of the best ways
to enjoy Scuttlebrook. Especially with the fairground
next door for the children (and big kids) to enjoy too!
Sponsorship and Fundraising
Putting on Scuttlebrook each year has become a more
expensive endeavour, especially with the addition of
the live music festival. It’s important to take the chance
to remind the community that these acts are not free,
and indeed there are a whole host of other costs to the
day including, by popular demand, the return of the
Cheltenham Pipe Band!
A big thankyou to all those who have donated or
agreed to sponsor this year’s event. We will announce
our sponsors next month and would like to thank them
in advance. If you would like to sponsor Scuttlebrook
Wake, then please contact our Vice Chairman, Scott
Gill, at scottmartingill@aol.co.uk to find out more.
Or, if you would like to donate towards Scuttlebrook,
please visit our website below and follow the links to
the donations page. Thank you for your support!
COTSWOLD OLIMPICKS NEWS
Firstly, a huge thanks to everyone who attended our ‘80s night last month – your dedication to dressing
up for the era and getting down on the dance floor was outstanding! We’re pretty sure everyone had a
great time and it also put a little more into the Olimpick’s funds for 2024.
So, when do the games arrive this year? If you’ve received a Hayman Joyce calendar, please ignore the
date printed on it - The Cotswold Olimpicks are happening on Friday 31st May 2024.
Together with Paddy and the Scuttlebrook Wake Committee, our preparations are now close to completion and we’re all
looking forward to welcoming you back for another fabulous weekend of Cotswolds merriment.
Our next Fundraiser
On Thursday April 18th our good friends at Tokes are putting on a very special
Cheese and Wine tasting evening at The Court Rooms, Old Police Station.
The evening will be hosted by cheese expert, Simeon Hudson Evans and our
resident wine expert, Charlie Bennett.
Tickets are priced at £15 (including a selection of splendid cheeses and very
fine wines), with all proceeds going towards this year’s Olimpicks.
Due to the size of the venue, places are strictly limited, so make sure you get
your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. They are avaible
in-store at Tokes and can be reserved by calling 01386 849345.
What’s On this year?
There’ll be plenty to see on the hill before the games commence. This year
we’re bringing together two of your favourite acts from 2022 and 2023 to
deliver a unique display ‘Pedal Power vs Parkour’, which merges the skills
of BMX and Trial bike riding with free running. There will also be entertainment
for the kids, delicious food and, of course, your chance to watch and/or take
part in the games themselves.
2023 Shinkicking World Champion, Mike Newby, is
planning a return to Dover’s Hill to defend his title, so
we’re looking for as many brave challengers as possible
to come and make him work for it. For this and all the
other events, you just need to turn up on the day and
report to the registration point on the hill. The more the
merrier!
After the sun goes down, the beacon will be lit and you’ll
be treated to a spectacular fireworks display. Everyone is
then invited to join the torch-lit procession from Dover’s
Hill to Chipping Campden Town Square, where you can enjoy the return of local favourites –
Wired, who’ll keep the party going until Midnight.
Don’t miss out! - early bird tickets, at last year’s prices, are now available on Eventbrite and can be accessed either by a
Google search or by clicking the link on our website olimpickgames.co.uk.
Tickets purchased on the day will be £10/adult and £5/Child.
No Volunteers, No Games!
Fact – The Cotswold Olimpicks needs dozens of volunteers.
Problem – Numbers have been falling in recent years and a small group of loyal friends are
having to work harder than ever to keep this historic event going.
Solution – We need more people from our local community to get involved. We have a myriad
of jobs to suit all ages and abilities, from selling tickets to building a castle.
What can you do? – Become part of the team that keeps this amazing tradtion
alive (you’ll also have a lot of fun doing it!).
Please contact our Chairman: andy.norton.1963@gmail.com or call 07956 789697 if you’re ready to
support us. We look forward to hearing from you.
MARCH NEWS
We were thrilled to be able to
support the Community First
Responder’s Lent Lunch fundraiser on the 20th of February.
Thank you to everyone who supported the lunch, which
raised in excess of £650 towards the CFR Car fund. Well
done to everyone who helped make the event a huge success.
On Monday 11th March we held our twenty seventh annual
Primary School Public Speaking Competition. The students
had to make a speech for not more than five minutes on the
subject ‘If Only I…’ in front of teachers, parents, friends and
of course the judges.
There were 10 entries from our local primary schools, and we
were once again overwhelmed by the quality of the speeches
given by the 10 and 11-year-old entrants. We are always very
proud of the students in this competition who are always a
credit to their parents and teachers.
The speeches covered a range of topics; the world would
certainly be a better place if everyone could dance away the
doldrums, while older siblings did not escape playful scrutiny
and a look at the world of ADHD celebrated difference in an
illuminating reflection. The problem of climate change and
other worldwide concerns were highlighted in speeches that
looked at just how different the world would look, if only…
The audience were also left pondering a future where they
could be sipping tea and eating cupcakes by the Seine in a
vision of an ‘if only’ dream come true.
Whatever subject the students tackled they did so with
confidence and flair. We were left feeling, as we always are at
this event, that whatever the future holds it will be a brighter
one because these young people will be in it.
The judges Keyna Doran, Geoff Carr and Ed Perrins faced
an almost impossible task of choosing a winner and two
runners up, but choose they had to and in 1st place was Poppy
Postins St Catherine’s School, in 2nd place was Ivy Haydon
St Catherine’s and in 3rd place Ashton Flux from Rissington
School. Special credit should be given to all of the students,
to Felix Lord, Olivia Eastwood, Ella Bow, Amelia Obasi,
Ronnie Doyle, Sylvia Efstratiou and to Thomas Graham.
There was a mere four marks difference between the whole
of the group.
A collection was held during the break for tea and coffee
which raised an amazing £85 towards the Community First
Responder Car. Thank you to all who helped make the
evening a success and thank you to the students themselves
who made it an enjoyable and entertaining evening.
On Saturday 2nd
It is 40 years since a small group of like-minded
people formed Campden and District Historical and
Archaeological Society (CADHAS). A programme of
lectures was developed which has continued with great
success, and members were offered training in research
with the experienced historians producing articles and
books. There was also training in interviewing local
people and recording their memories. This resulted in
a range of publications over the years, including Fred
Caldicott’s ‘Memories of an Old Campdonian’. This
has been one of the most popular books, used now as a
reference to Campden life a century ago.
Now renamed Chipping Campden History Society,
with the strapline ‘Bringing local history to life’, our
monthly programme of talks also includes ‘Talking
Local History’, in a more informal style which can
include interruptions by the audience!
UPDATE
ORCHARD BLOSSOM DAY
Saturday 27th April from 11am to 4pm
Once again we are delighted
to celebrate Blossom Day and
we do so alongside hundreds
of others across the country,
all celebrating orchards as
important and also magical
places for the benefit of people
and nature. Come and enjoy the
glorious pink and white mosaic
at Wolds End Orchard with its
120 fruit trees, both young and
ancient. Bring friends, family - even a thermos or a picnic if
the weather is good! Or perhaps bring your camera or some
art materials so you can enjoy this brief spell of breaking
blooms at the start of the annual growing cycle. Apple juice
from the orchard will also be on sale. Just pop in over during
the day and have a wander around to inspire the senses and
take in the beauty of nature.
Note: The orchard is very uneven underfoot so ensure you
wear appropriate footwear. Also, no dogs please as the
orchard is a nature reserve as well as a working orchard.
It was terrific to see the Town Council expressly include
community orchards and wildflower meadows within their
Climate Emergency Working Party Terms of Reference
in February and acknowledge that these places are part of
something much bigger and more important. The Orchard
has been on the Wolds End site continuously for nearly
200 years and during that time it has nurtured hundreds
of animals, plants and microorganisms by providing food
sources and safe nesting places as the town has expanded and
the traffic has increased. The Orchard Project estimates that
a single orchard can provide habitat for up to 1,800 wildlife
species; so the benefits to biodiversity are enormous. And
why is biodiversity so important? Well, it is essential for the
processes that support all life on Earth, including humans.
Without it we cannot have the healthy ecosystems that we
rely on to provide us with the air we breathe and the food
we eat. In addition, spending time with others in nature is
proven to boost health; around the country networks of GPs
and health practitioners are increasing using what’s known
as “social prescribing,” which includes physical and nature
based activities, to improve wellbeing, reduce loneliness
and build confidence - all of which goes to support the hard
pressed NHS. Luckily for our town, the Orchard is a glorious
place to be to stimulate the senses – particularly in the Spring!
WORK PARTIES : Our work party morning this month
is 13th April 10am -12 noon (as 27th Saturday is Blossom
Day) – please add to your diaries and consider coming along!
We have cleared elder from the hedges now, so that a greater
diversity of hedgerow plants can flourish. This month we will
be planting more whips in the hedges to fill the gaps with a
range of species. Volunteers have pulled grass away from the
roots of the young trees so that they can get well established.
New branches have been trained to grow low, making future
harvests easier (you will see these, gently tied in place with
soft brown tethers). We have also, thanks to last month’s
workshop, made grafts from trees in the orchard so as to
be able to replace the veteran trees when they finally fail.
There are lots of jobs to get done to fit every level of activity,
knowledge and enthusiasm. The Orchard’s future and health
depends on volunteers. You can just turn up, or contact us,
email us at foweo2020@gmail.com or through the Friends of
Wolds End Orchard Facebook page.
Wolds End Apple Juice is now available to purchase at £3.50
a 75cl bottle (or at a discounted price to Campden Society
members of 6 bottles at £20 or 12 at £40) with free delivery
in the Campden area; to purchase, please contact Geoffrey
White on 0781 500 5879 or geoffreymwhite@gmail.com. In
addition, they can be purchased from Court Barn Museum.
Best wishes from Julianne, Geoff, Susie, Mike, John,
Geoffrey, Steven and Owen
ART IN THE ORCHARD : The early March Monday of
Art in the Orchard was enjoyed by several people and having
the longer hours allowed us to enjoy the sunshine. Please
come and join us on Monday 8th April (one week later than
usual due to Easter) and Friday 19th April any time between
10.30am - 3.30pm Christina Kingsmill.
PLANNING & CONSERVATION MATTERS
We encourage everyone to submit individual views about
planning applications
and local strategy to
Cotswold District
Council. They are
currently inviting
comments on their
Partial Update of the
District’s Local Plan to
make it ‘Green to the
Core’ and you can read
the papers and take in a digital survey by following this link:
www.your.cotswold.gov.uk/en-GB/
This consultation ends on Sunday 7th April.
Campden’s draft Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP)
will be open for public consultation from Monday 8th April
and comments are invited for 6 weeks. During this period, the
full NDP will be accessible via the Town Council’s website
and hard copies will be available for reading in the library
and at the Visitor Information Centre. Further details, along
with a response form, are in this month’s Bulletin. The NDP
is important; it guides, but does not determine, all planning
decisions relating to land use in the area. It should therefore
reflect the views of all stakeholders in the neighbourhood.
Accordingly, we strongly urge all residents to respond to the
consultation; your opinions need to be taken into account
in the process of finalising our NDP. To assist Campden
Society members in this respect, we will be issuing a further
communication in a Members’ Newsletter in the early weeks
of consultation period. We do not intend to provide standard
wording for responses, but rather to help you develop your
own responses by providing additional explanation of the
NDP policies, their consequences, and why they might be
important to you.
SOCIETY NEWS : Our AGM this year will be held on
Thursday 25th April 7pm for 7.30pm in the Town Hall.
We have three vacancies and currently have two willing
candidates standing for election to the Society’s main
committee – and so are looking for one more. If you would
like to consider joining us, do get in touch.
April for our 5K Fun Run/Walk at 360Fit Blockley - a gym
with outdoor space set within the grounds of a 28 acre farm,
amongst beautiful Cotswold countryside.
This is a great opportunity to shake off the winter blues,
get fit for summer and raise money for Campden Home
Nursing. So, dust off those running shoes, spread your
wings and be a part of something truly egg-citing.
Participants of all ages and running abilities will have a
unique opportunity to take part in a multi-terrain, crosscountry
5K walk or run, taking in fresh air and the natural
beauty of the rolling rural landscape. You don’t have to
come dressed like a chicken, but this is a jolly, family event
with a heartwarming purpose, so we encourage everyone
to have fun at the same time as raising Funds for Campden
Home Nursing.
So fly the coop, get outside, and race through the Cotswolds
fields. Gather your flock, colleagues, friends, or family, and
join us for a poultry-in-motion celebration of community,
support, and genuinely making a difference.
The event is kindly sponsored by Northcot Brick Limited,
Cotek Papers Ltd, Holmans Estate Agents, Co-op (Chipping
Campden) and Lashford Sausages.
Entry is £15 for adults and £5 for children 18 or under,
whether you walk or run.
SECRETS OF THE MUSEUM:
COURT BARN CELEBRATES AND
CONSERVES CRAFTS IN DANGER
In 1908 in a busy corner of Sheep Street, Chipping
Campden, the Guild of Handicraft’s printing press on the
ground floor of the Silk Mill was put into action. C. R.
Ashbee’s Craftsmanship
in Competitive Industry,
a staunch defence and
celebration of the value
of handmade craft, was
to be published by the
Essex House Press. This
book, along with a large
collection of other Essex
House Press titles, is
now carefully stored in
the Court Barn archive.
Its determined vision
of communities giving
makers ‘the opportunity’ to make ‘contact with material[s]’
which enable them to make
things ‘with their hands’ speaks
to the work being carried out by
organisations such as the Queen
Elizabeth Scholarship Trust and
Heritage Crafts today.
Heritage Crafts’ Red List of
Endangered Crafts captured
national media attention in 2022
when crafts such as cricket ball
making were declared extinct
in the UK, while over 60
other crafts including coppersmithing
and diamond cutting
were listed as critically endangered in 2023. Ashbee
would probably feel rather despondent that parchment and
vellum making is now also critically endangered: Essex
House Press books are made from a traditionally-made,
high-quality parchment.
Court Barn, however, celebrates many of the crafts which
are now on the brink of extinction. In autumn 2022, the
museum showcased shoemaking and millinery from
Caroline Groves and Louise Pocock. Heritage Crafts
listed hat block making as critically endangered, while
hat making as a whole was recently moved off the list of
‘viable’ crafts.
Louise Pocock’s
work and passion
for hat wearing and
styling nonetheless
shows that there is
still reason for hope
and she remains an
active member of
the Gloucestershire
Guild of Craftsmen.
Most cheeringly,
crafts for which
Chipping Campden
and our surrounding
area is most famous (silversmithing, furniture making,
stained glass making, studio pottery and thatching)
are all listed by Heritage Crafts as currently viable,
meaning they have sufficient craftspeople to transmit
their craft skills to the next generation. Not only does
Court Barn exhibit many of these crafts, but the museum
has recently undertaken a new makers’ support scheme
funded by an art, music and craft charity, The Radcliffe
Trust. The Craft
Partnership Scheme
will enable early-mid
career makers from
Gloucestershire and
surrounding areas to
work with a member
of the Gloucestershire
Guild to develop their
skills, knowledge and
experience.
Perceptions of the
practice of craft have
also changed since
Ashbee emphasised
the tactile ‘contact
with materials’,
with makers such as Gordon Russell and Robert Welch,
including machine making as part of their Arts and Craftsinspired
work. New technology has also brought some
crafts to the fore: a recent social media post shared by
Heritage Crafts received more than 3 million views as it
celebrated the role of textile crafts in the making of space
satellite materials!
The 2024 Chipping Campden Music Festival
Tickets
While the music and musicians are the beating heart of the
Festival, ticket sales and the audience are our life blood.
Some concerts are already nearly sold out, but there are
still tickets for most evenings. Be brave – try something
new this year. You won’t be disappointed. Each and every
one of these concerts will be exceptional.
The Festival opens with a fanfare from David Blackadder
and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment on 13th
May and ends by raising the roof of St James’ Church with
Sibelius’ life affirming 5th Symphony on Saturday 25th May.
And there is a bounty of wonderful concerts throughout
the two weeks of the festival.
Head over to our website to book tickets
www.campdenmayfestivals.co.uk/events
The Festival Orchestra
After months of auditioning, the Festival Orchestra, the
largest yet, is complete and the standard is higher than
ever with over 220 applicants this year (doubled from
2023) for the 28 academy chairs.
Our reputation as one of the best side by side training
schemes reaches further and deeper.
We are indebted to those of you in the town who are
hosting musicians this year. Thank you to you all - we
simply would not be able to run this programme without
you.
This scheme, now in its 16th year, is very costly to run and
cannot exist without donations and sponsorship.
Do You Know? is a not too serious column for you to
enjoy where we ask a local personality to share some of
their secrets and inspiration for success with us.
Today over a cup of coffee in my
kitchen I get to turn the tables on
Lynden Stowe, founder of Vale Press
and editor of ‘The Bulletin’ so that
instead of him asking the questions
he is on the receiving end of mine.
Are you a local boy?
Yes I was brought up in Mickleton and went to Chipping
Campden School. I think I still hold the school sprint records
for 100m, 200m and 400m from 1979. I have slowed up a bit
since then!
What do you watch on TV?
‘Father Brown’ filmed locally is a favourite, and I enjoy
repeats of classic comedies such as ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘Only
Fools and Horses’ and ‘Fawlty Towers’. They don't make
them like they used to!
Are you reading a good book at the moment?
I have two books on the go. ‘Rivets, Trivets &
Galvanised Buckets’ by Tom
Fort, the story of a village
hardware-shop and ‘The
Lunar Men’ by Jenny Uglow,
about the Birmingham-based
Lunar Society - the men who
changed the world in the 18th
century.
What was the last film you watched?
‘One Life’ starring Anthony Hopkins, celebrating the rescue
in 1938 and 1939 of 669 Kindertransport children from Nazioccupied
Czechoslovakia by train to London by Nicholas
Winton. It's a brilliant film, which everyone should see.
What’s on your music playlist?
I am a fan of the 70s with ‘Seagull’ by Bad Company, perhaps
my favourite. Then Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones
and Neil Diamond. Also classical tracks such as ‘Jerusalem’
from Chariots of Fire; ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘Nimrod’. So
quite an eclectic list.
What is your favourite local spot?
From Baker's Hill looking out on Mickleton, Meon Hill and
Kiftsgate.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs.
What is your greatest extravagance?
One very large oil painting by Yvonne Coomber. Our kitchen/
diner/lounge is basically designed around it.
What was your first job?
I started out with the NFU in Stratford and moved quickly
on to Saville Tractors also in Stratford as a management
accountant.
When did you set up on your own?
I started Vale Press in 1984 with my brother, David, in
competition with about 25 other printers within 10 miles. We
had started printing a few years earlier in a garden shed with
a hand-operated Adana Letterpress.
Who inspired you?
In my younger years, Tiny Rowland of Lonhro (who owned
Saville Tractors) was a big influence. Today, locally, I respect
Denys Shortt, Chairman of DCS Group based in Banbury
and Redditch, who lives in Buckland.
Your fantasy Dinner Party guests?
Sir Winston Churchill, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Queen
Elizabeth II and my Great-great Grandfather, Edward
Vaughton. Perhaps also Mandy Rice-Davies to add a bit-offun
to the proceedings!
What is your biggest challenge?
Pricing in print is incredibly challenging. Running and
sustaining a viable business is always tough. Covid was the
worst nightmare - without furlough most small businesses
would have crashed. Business rates for manufacturers and
industrial units are far too high.
What was your best business decision?
Moving from our shed in Mickleton and buying our own
premises in Willersey in 1997.
What is interesting about Printing?
The variety. No two days are the same. Every customer is
different. Every job is different. Our biggest job was 14
million leaflets for a national campaign. The logistics were
horrendous. So was getting paid!
How does the business support local communities?
Vale Press has some very large national customers, but also
hundreds of smaller ones too. Many of the jobs we print
are for individuals, small businesses and organisations. We
have never lost our roots and still print more than 50 local
community and parish magazines. We like to play our part in
supporting communities.
Lynden Stowe was talking to Michael Allchin
from Campden Business Forum CIC.
GUITING MUSIC FESTIVAL
2024 LINE- UP
The 53rd Guiting Music Festival (GMF)
which last year celebrated its highest
attendance figures, is delighted to announce
its exciting line-up for 2024.
Over 10 days from July 19th-28th, the Guiting Power festival
stage – which this year has been extended to accommodate bigger
orchestras, - will play host to world renowned, international,
European and UK artists. GMF continues to grow its reputation
as one of the leading music festivals in the Cotswolds, offering
a superb eclectic mix of artists and genres of music.
On Friday July 26th, the festival hosts one of the brightest young
stars on the classical music scene, the cellist Sheku Kanneh-
Mason, who caught the world’s attention in May 2018 after
performing at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
He is accompanied by his equally talented violinist brother
Braimah Kanneh- Mason, together with Plinio Fernandes on
guitar and the 28-piece Fantasia Orchestra conducted by Tom
Fetherstonhaugh. Their concert will take the audience on
a musical journey spanning centuries, countries, and genres,
ranging from folk to funk, Brahms to Bob Marley. Highlights
include Dvorak’s ‘Song to the Moon’ and Chic’s ‘Good Times,’
as well as innovative arrangements of music by Laura Muvla
and Stevie Wonder.
Gracing the GMF stage on Saturday July 27th, is one of the
most enduring and popular artistes in Britain today, legendary
multiple award-winning Scottish singer, songwriter, musician
and actress Barbara Dickson. She will be performing an
evening packed with many of her well-known and well-loved
hit songs such as ‘I Know Him So Well’, ‘January February,’
‘Answer Me’ and ‘Another Case in Another Hall’. Barbara will
be accompanied by Nick Holland on keyboards and vocals.
Joe Stilgoe ‘A very British Harry Connick Jnr ‘The Times
and his incredible band The Entertainers - the Ultimate
Jazz Supergroup -launches the festival on Friday July 19th.
Featuring some of the great young UK jazz talent including
Giacomo Smith and with harmonies to die for and musicianship
to live for, it’s a show not to be missed.
Saturday sees the captivating singer and pianist Izo FitzRoy
take to the stage with her unique 7-piece line up including
gospel vocalists. With a rare combination of powerful vocals,
honest song writing and dynamic live performances, Izo’s
music is a unique and captivating blend of soul, gospel and
blues.
Due to popular demand, piano-man extraordinaire Tom Seals
- ‘He sounds like Little Richard’ Tom Jones - makes a very
welcome return. His virtuoso solo-ing, excellent improvisation
skills and distinctive voice have left top industry officials
hailing him the UK’s finest boogie pianist/vocalist. This time
at the GMF, he will be accompanied by his sextet for the everpopular
Sunday Jazz Open Air Day. Supporting is the alto
saxophonist Allison Neale and her Quartet. Regarded as one of
the finest exponentsof the melodic West Coast style, the band
will be recreating the pairing of Paul Desmond (Dave Brubeck
Quartet) and American jazz guitarist Jim Hall (Sonny Rollins)
The Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita - nicknamed ‘the
Hendrix of the Kora’ - and his Sengalen 8-piece Homeland
band, make the trip to Guiting Power on Monday July 22nd.
The kora is backed with the dynamic, uplifting and at times
hypnotic rhythms of bass, percussion, drums, keyboard and
extraordinary vocals, that lift the audience to its feet and leave
it buzzing!
Starting the GMF classical programme on Tuesday July
23rd, is Ukrainian born pianist Vitaly Pisarenko. A Professor
of Piano at the Royal College of Music, London, he will be
performing music by Schumann, Franz Liszt, Sergei Prokofiev
and Maurice Ravel.
The stunning musical partnership of violinist Alena Baeva
and pianist Vadym Kholodenko perform on Wednesday July
24th. Alena has been described as one of the most exciting and
versatile soloists on the world stage today, whilst Kholodenko’s
recordings have been described as ‘Truly outstanding’
Gramophone Magazine.
Thursday July 25th sees Fretwork Viol Consort with the awardwinning,
BBC New Generation artist mezzo-soprano Helen
Charlston, perform music by Michael Nyman & Henry Purcell
The festival ends on Sunday July 28th with the not to be missed
Sunday Blues Open Air Day, which this year features the multiaward-winning
Blues singer Elles Bailey accompanied by her
5-piece Blues band. With her smokey, rootsy, blues, country
and soulful voice, she has been described as a heady blend of
Stevie Nicks and Dusty Springfield.
Supporting Elles, is the legendary Bluesman Errol Linton and
his exceptional band ‘The Greatest British Blues Performing
Artist’ – Cerys Matthews, BBC Radio. His London shows are
legendary and he has become a favourite at festivals worldwide.
“Following the success of our 2023 Festival, we are delighted to
be bringing another amazing programme of top-quality artists
to The Guiting Music Festival,” says Probyn Miers, Chair of
Guiting Music Festival. “Our festival is unique in offering 10
days of a wide and diverse selection of spectacular music in a
beautiful and special setting”.
Not only does the festival offer the best music, there is also a
selection of local seasonal food on offer as well as fine wines,
beers and soft drinks at all the shows. Great music, delicious
food and in the loveliest of surroundings – a perfect music
festival!
ST JAMES’ CHURCH REPAIR CAFE
MARCH 2024 REPORT
CLOCK SPECIAL
This time we
had the benefit
of a visit from
Francis Bennett,
The Cotswold
Clockmaker, who
was able to look
at quite a variety
of clocks for
customers.
Here he is looking
at a carriage clock,
and he brought with
him for demonstration purposes the movement of an early
18th Century long case (or grandfather) clock, set up here
behind him.
Francis specialises in mechanical clocks, but will look at any
including battery and quartz.
At the repair cafe, our general repairers have often in the past
carried out simple repairs on battery clocks, and will still offer
to do so.
But we have always referred to specialists where necessary,
and until now have passed his details on when mechanical
and antique clocks are concerned.
Quite a queue developed, Francis working hard all morning
looking at over a dozen timepieces.
We look forward to him returning to do another session with
us in the Autumn.
But customers waiting had the benefit of our usual selection
of delicious cakes and refreshments, as well as conversations
with other repairers and each other.
Otherwise we had our usual mixed bag
Pictured are items from last time, awaiting return to their
owners including the toys and teddy featured in last months
report – teddy
with two glass
eyes now but
he has had to
be parted from
the repairers
own teddy,
Peter, as seen
last month. A
guitar (tidied
up – please
note we are
not musical instruments specialists!) - an antique German
porcelain mirror, a pepper mill, a German copper and brass
hunting scenes ashtray, and a Regency rosewood tea caddy.
Here is a photograph of the German mirror before – for many
years just held together with ribbon
By far the most popular table is always our electricals table –
the usual array of lamps came in although this time we were
entrusted with two rather special ones - a 1970’s Spanish
designer cantilever table lamp – and a Chinese hardstone
31
Sponsored by Vale Press 31
or jade ‘tree’ lamp which has taken
a severe tumble and will be quite a
challenge – look out for these next
time.
But we are just as happy to look at
the mundane – my favourite item this
time looking at the entry forms is a
toaster that came in ‘not working’ –
the repairer has noted ‘toast removed’
and handed it back working!
We always have a PAT tester on site and are willing to check
items out for safety.
Other items include damaged family photo frames, a metal
wine goblet needing it’s stem re-attaching, a mower blade
needing sharpening, a piano stool with wobbly legs, some
chipped plaster crib figures, a chipped and stained turned
wooden bowl made by the owner nearly 70 years ago, a tyre
inflator, a pressure washer (filter blocked – sorted on the
day), and two radios (also sent away working).
The principle is -repair – renew- recycle – don’t throw it out.
We’ve saved quite a bit from landfill!
The next repair cafe at the Church Rooms, on the corner
of Church Street and Calf Lane, is on Saturday April 13th,
10am to 12.30pm.
Dates for 2024 (always the second Saturday of the month) are
May 11th, June 8th, July 13th, August 10th, September 14th,
October 12th, November 9th, December 14th
WOULD-BE REPAIRERS - GET IN TOUCH
We’d always be pleased to add you to our team.
As repairs – there is plenty of opportunity for repairers and
clients to enjoy delicious cakes, coffee and tea – and all free
of charge as are the repairs (materials only at cost) – donations
invited to cover expenses.
The Bulletin’s
monthly columnist:
JB
TAKES A LOOK
AT LIFE
Farmers are revolting
Everyone’s an expert, or at least has an opinion, that’s always been the case, but back in the day we would get round the
table or lean on the bar and talk about the things one shouldn’t, politics, religion, the headmaster and the new PE teacher,
that sort of thing all for a good old yarn. Occasionally things would get a bit lively, and the landlord would issue a ban.
Done, sorted, move on.
But today there are annoying phone-in shows and that thing known as X which was previously more aptly known as
Twatter. People who should be using their energy more wisely have taken to telling others, with like minds, what to like
and what not to like and bizarrely that includes food and farming. Arguments rage between people who haven’t a clue.
There’s an absence of sense about it all.
The BBC is no help as it stands accused of being ‘woke’ and politically correct and so the bonkers world and some even
more bonkers ideas are getting attention in the ether.
With authority one can express views, to get views, and consequently social media grows in size, if not influence. The
clue is in the title, it’s a social platform for conversation but has been hijacked by people with somewhat extreme views
and wanting ‘their world’ to know.
In the farming community too, all is not well. Coping with ten times the average rain fall here in one month takes its toll
and we are yet to see if this translates into a poor harvest. Also, there’s been some ‘meddling’ by someone who should
know better. You know that little Red Tractor logo on the food packaging which was created to help us shoppers know
what we are buying comes from our countryside and was farmed with care? Well, I read the management there may have
been sniffing too much patchouli oil. They seem to have got themselves into a fix by suggesting British farmers needed to
sign up to and pay for, a ‘Greener Farms Commitment’ presumably because the people from Bristol and Solihull will like
it. Farmers, who don’t seem to have signed up to the BBC ‘wokeness policy’, have revolted and told the Red Tractor driver
where to stick the stupid idea. Quite right because, as far as one can tell, British farmers are a credit to their industry and
quite poor relative to others, in some countries. They too are trying to produce good, affordable food along with nurturing
nature and make a living. Difficult yes but good soil health and Bees galore help in the process. Never mind the green
washing. Just ask a farmer – but not on social media.
Making silly decisions is not just a Red Tractor thing and if you need a local(ish) example look at the row over coaches
in Bourton on the Water. Some wally(s) already stopping coaches from parking near-by and now proposes banning them
driving through the heart of the town. I assume chief wally doesn’t quite have a grip on how the local economy works and
how reliant the traders are on footfall for selling ice creams, nick-nacks and other stuff to coach travelling tourists. The
whole argument has been going on for ages and has got to the point where the local MP Sir Geofrey Clifton Brown has
spotted an opportunity to curry favour with voters, cos, citing his ‘reservations’ about the proposal, even he’s waded in. I
imagine an astute intern, sorry, I mean political advisor, recently graduated from Warwick University, has recognised the
Lib Dems don’t quite understand business and Labour’s very busy blaming the Tories, for years of under investment. And
so, Sir G C-B may yet be covered in glory, if common sense prevails.
It’s just my opinion.
was read out at the ETCM on 29 January 2024.
An item is included on the Payments for Approval list under
Memorial Headstone Safety Testing: It was approved at the
last Town Council meeting to appoint Memsafe to carry out the
‘wobble testing’ at St. James’ Churchyard and West End Terrace
Cemetery. Preparation work has been undertaken and headstone
safety testing will start week commencing 19 March 2024.
Parking concerns raised at the last Town Council meeting with
have been reported to GCC Highways.
Parking on double yellow lines: GCC Parking team have
confirmed Chipping Campden receives 10 hours of enforcement
a month, which is on par with similar sized locations in the
Cotswolds. The Contractor used for enforcement have confirmed
that all 10 hours were undertaken in December. Random times
are used for enforcement, so visits are on different days and
weeks. I have requested clarification from Parking team to
provide a breakdown for the last 6 month period of when the 10
hours per month were carried out, in which locations and how
many tickets have been issued.
Use of resident parking cones: The Public Highway is open to
use by all. For example, even a space marked outside a property
for use by motorists with a disability use can be used by any
other motorist with a blue badge, not just the adjacent resident
who made the initial application.
The use of cones to reserve a space could be considered an
infringement of the Highways Act.
Please notify the Highways Authority of any locations where
this practice is being undertaken and they will arrange removal
of the cones.
Introducing traffic calming measures: on the approach to
Westington and improving pedestrian safety in Back Ends: For
clarification, the Town Council is working in conjunction with
the Highways Authority with regards to both projects. The point
at the last meeting was to explain that GCC have budgetary
responsibility to introduce traffic calming measures and this
explains why there wasn’t any funding identified in the Town
Council 2024/2025 budget.
Blister Packs: Refuse is the responsibility of Cotswold District
Council, unfortunately they do not accept responsibility for
recycling blister packs. There are some suggestions if anyone
is interested in finding out please contact me. Otherwise refer to
District Councillors to help the cause.
Pavement outside Woodstaples Hall: I took some photos
and reported this on Gloucestershire County Council - Fix My
Street. It’s been reported back - we have carried out a safety
inspection and this site will be monitored during regular routine
inspections. However, in line with our policy the issue reported
does not require immediate urgent attention at this time. We
would be grateful if you could let us know if the situation
deteriorates unexpectedly.
Temporary Road Closures:
The Square – Top road to the square from 13 to 15 February for
utility repair and maintenance
Calf Lane – 21 to 23 February for Gigaclear installation work
Meet the Team ...
Hetty Hyde-Durrant CFP TM Financial Planner
Hetty joined us in
October 2022 after
6 years’ experience
working behind the
scenes in a large
financial planning
firm. She has an
MSc in Economics
and Public Policy
from the University
of Bristol and
became a Certified
Financial Planner
in February 2024.
Hetty works alongside Keri providing Financial Planning
advice to clients. She believes that Financial Planning is
personal and about helping clients achieve their goals and
aspirations, not just about the numbers.
Outside of work she loves travelling with her fiancé, going
to festivals with friends and exploring local pubs to find the
best Sunday dinner! She also attends CrossFit classes most
days. She says it’s to keep her fit but, really, it’s to socialise!
We recently grilled Hetty with some probing questions to
find out a little more about her….
What are your top 3 highlights of life so far?
- This is tricky but I just think of moments of pure joy like
spending the day going up and down the waterpark slides
with my family when we were younger, exploring the
islands in Thailand with my partner or singing my heart out
to Destiny’s Child with my friends at my 30th birthday party.
Is there an ability you wish you had?
- To speak Italian. I started learning with my partner last
year. He has a natural flare and I have just fallen behind!
What’s top of your bucket list?
- I’d love to live abroad but I can’t see it happening until
we retire. Maybe somewhere in South East Asia!
What song is guaranteed to get you on the dance floor?
- Thinking of you – Sister Sledge!
Do you have a talent that would surprise people?
- I don’t really have any! I can climb a 15ft rope, does that
count?
What does your working day look like?
- I start the day off with a CrossFit session before heading
to work. Every morning, we have a team meeting to go
through the priorities for the day. We’ll usually have one
or two meetings with clients to discuss their Financial Plan
and recommend any changes so they stay on track to meet
their goals.
What do you most like about working at BFP?
- I think Financial Planning is like solving a puzzle and the
solution can have such a positive impact on our clients’
lives! The role is intellectually challenging but also allows
me to get to know clients
individually and build long
lasting relationships.
38
What are your plans for
2024?
- More travelling! Me
and my partner are going
interrailing in the summer
and Vietnam in the winter.
Oh, and we’re get married
in May!
TRAVEL WITH MERV
Isn’t it great to wake up to daylight and our days becoming
longer at last?
I have had a busy few weeks travelling. In early March I
went to visit and experience the newest ship in the Princess
Cruises fleet called the Sun Princess. I sailed part of her
maiden voyage from Athens to Barcelona and stopped off
in Scilly and Mallorca. We took the train from Messina to
Taormina on the east coast of the island. It’s very beautiful
and was quiet as I visited in March although still warm
enough for shorts! It’s a beautiful town with winding streets,
many restaurants, and cafes with a main square of Taormina
giving wonderful views of Mount Etna which was covered
in snow.
After a day at sea, we reached Palma in Mallorca - a
wonderful city with fantastic architecture, very good
shopping, and lots of bars and restaurants.
The Sun Princess is a huge ship, and I wasn’t sure that was
for me. However, the amount of space on board made it feel
airy and uncrowded. With a tonnage of 177.500, it provides
for a maximum of 4300 guests with 1600 crew and has 21
decks of luxurious and very smart interiors and cabins.
This ship is very family friendly with great spaces for
children of all ages and separate clubs away from the
main part of the ship. The medallion allows parents to see
exactly where their children are via the app connected to
the medallion. If you are travelling without children, not to
worry there are plenty of adult only spaces on board to relax
and read a book or have a snooze!
The ship has many restaurants to try, entertainment was
great with something for everyone. The main area is the
arena, which is a large circular theatre with the stage in the
middle so everyone gets a great view. The dome is a glass
roofed area which is next to a pool in the day and perfect
if the days are cooler. I have never seen anything like this
at sea. You can swim out of the dome to the pool on the
deck and back in again. In the evening it’s a whole different
entertainment area. The Irish pub on board was incredibly
popular and always the last to empty on an evening.
The Sun Princess is sailing many different cruises in the
next couple of years. It’s a beautiful ship and I would book
it for a holiday in the future.
As this article goes to press, I will also have been on my
own holiday. Another cruise on board the Azamara Pursuit
which is another new cruise line for me. This time it is on
a smaller ship of around 850 guests and only 11 decks. We
will be travelling from Lisbon to Barcelona, calling at some
lovely places along the way (Seville, Cartagena, Malaga,
Gibraltar to name a few). I am looking forward to this trip
as I haven’t holidayed in Spain for quite some years. The
great thing about cruises is that although you stop off at
ports for maybe only a day or two you can always go back
and explore more on a city break. It’s like having a taster.
As always thanks to those of you that have booked with
me recently. I have helped plan some lovely trips around
the world and look forward to helping more of you in the
future.
Wherever it is you would like to go please get in touch.
THE MICKLETON SOCIETY
‘A LIFETIME IN CHEESE’ - MARCH MEETING
John Longman travelled 90 miles from his farm in Somerset to
tell an audience of over sixty members about his ‘Lifetime in
Cheese’ and to treat members to some delicious samples from
local farms in the county.
John related how he grew up in Somerset as a farmer’s son
watching his elder sister and others making cheese on the
family farm. He confessed to not being a great success when it
was his turn to take over the farm but he had acquired a love of
cheese and cheese making and around 2005 focused his career
on the making of cheese.
His career as a cheese maker took him to many parts of the
world including a small dairy in Australia where be developed
his skills making 19 different cheeses. He also worked in
France and Alberta to learn their techniques. Later he came to
‘Daylesford Organic’ in the Cotswolds to become cheese maker
for over seven years. He is still making a variety of cheeses
although he also belongs to various societies and a choir.
He explained the processes, the bacterial culture to add to the
milk, the use of rennet, the importance of salt to control the
bacteria, the pressing and turning of the cheeses, timing and
temperature to make the great variety of cheeses we enjoy
whether soft or hard, crumbly or creamy.
It is believed the process of cheese making started by early man
carrying milk around in animal stomachs where enzymes in
those stomachs got to work on the milk. Cheese making was
necessary to take up and store surplus milk given by cows and
goats etc during the summer months.
He discussed the different techniques to make various cheeses
from Cheddar to Brie, use of pasteurised and unpasteurised
milk. He explained how blue cheeses were made by leaving
making holes for the mould to spread through, therefore not
pressing it which would inhibit that spread. Smoked cheeses can
be smoked over oak chips but some has the flavouring added.
Questions were now coming from the audience about how their
favourites were made whilst others wanted to know about the
cheese making industry and how it functioned. John explained
that part of the fascination of the craft is the variety of flavours
one can get depending not only on the process but the type of
cow, the grass in the field etc. Friesians are the favoured cow
for English cheeses but, although not so common, Ayrshire
cows the best. Guernsey cows are not so good for cheddar,
the milk being too rich and creamy. The skill of cheesemaking
was in controlling the process, understanding the variables and
repeating the processes to get a consistent cheese.
The industry includes small low volume cheese makers making
perhaps 100 tons a year and large producers like Davidstow
producing 200 tons a day with many of the processes
mechanised but nevertheless making a good cheese.
John concluded by saying that the highest volume of cheese
sold in the world was cheddar and that English cheeses were
some of the best if not the best in the world!
The remaining business of the Society was somewhat hurried
as there was a large table of sample cheeses to try and members
were keen to do so. It was a very enjoyable evening.
The next meeting is the Society’s AGM on 3rd April, followed
by a presentation by Richard Baldwin about his work
diversifying the farm at Lower Clopton. The meeting starts at
7.30pm at The Three Ways House Hotel, Mickleton.
Planning a new garden or thinking
of redesigning a border in your
existing garden?
Are you free on Wednesday 17th
April at 7.30pm? If so, then come along to the King George’s
Hall in Mickleton.
We are delighted to be welcoming Lucy Hartley, a local garden
designer, to give her talk ‘Principles and Pitfalls of New Border
Design’. Lucy will be helping you to think about specific plant
choices for a beautiful mixed border. There will also be tips
and warnings of common pitfalls to look out for along the way.
Only £3 entrance or you can join our club for £15 and come
along to our monthly talks for free.
MICKLETON WI
MARCH MEETING:
Craft Evening
Two of our members, Jayne and Kim led a rag
wreath crafting session. This attracted five visitors in addition
to our existing members, so we hope they had an enjoyable
evening and will want to join us.
We wanted to make the evening as environmentally sound as
possible so asked members to donate fabric. They took us at
our word and turned out cupboards and several of us spent
many a happy hour cutting unwanted bed linen into strips
with the enduring support of our families!
It was a happy, relaxed and creative evening with members
choosing colours and tying them onto frames whilst chatting
and enjoying refreshments.
News
Once again we will be entering a team to the County Skittles
Competition from Spring to the Autumn. It was good fun last
year, so we are hoping to attract 15 members so that absences
can be covered. Our social/practice evenings will be held at
the Butchers Arms. where we will be provided with food.
This month we had a very enjoyable time there which
included the most delicious meal of homemade steak pie,
chips and peas - very welcome on a wet midweek evening.
Please come along if you fancy a couple of hours socialising,
eating, drinking and having fun and a natter whilst honing
your skittles skills. All members welcome.
The April date is yet to be advised.
Walks
Our very popular walking group recommenced this month
and a fairly dry route was mapped out. The next walk will
be either later in March or in early April, depending on the
weather.
The walks often include a refreshment stop at one of the
lovely cafes en route. All members welcome.
Lesley is arranging a coffee morning on 26th March at
10.30am until 12.30pm, in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society
and is hoping that as many members as possible will be able
to attend
Forthcoming Programme
8th April - Japanese Drumming - Taiko Talk and participation
13th May - A Life in the Theatre - speaker Nick Wilkes
10th June - All about Pearls - speaker Pam Slade
Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at
7:30pm at King George’s Hall, Mickleton. New members are
very welcome as are visitors for whom we charge a fee of £5.
EBRINGTON & DISTRICT
GARDENING CLUB
At our March meeting we had a talk on -‘Borde Hill: A Plant
Hunter’s Paradise’ presented by Vanessa Berridge.
Borde Hill, an Elizabethan mansion in W. Sussex, was bought
in 1893 by a Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke who set
about creating the garden and woodland with plants gathered
from several continents by the great plant hunters in the first
decades of the 20th century.
Vanessa’s talk gave us a snapshot of a crucial period in the
development of British gardening, and revealed how four
generations of the Stephenson Clarke family have tended and
developed the garden at Borde Hill.
It is a Grade II* listed English Heritage Garden set within
383 acres of woodland and parkland, with magnificent views
across the Ouse Valley viaduct. It has been referred to by the
Daily Telegraph as ‘planted with passion’ and by Country
Life as ‘one of the country’s truly great gardens’.
Borde Hill is renowned for its astonishing collection of
unusual trees and shrubs. It’s one of four private gardens of
national importance and its exotic trees are recorded at Royal
Botanic Gardens, Kew. It is the origin of many hybrid plants
including Camellia x williamsii ‘Donation’ and Alstroemeria
‘Walter Fleming’.
The garden has distinct ‘rooms’, each with its own unique
style and character. In the last 30 years many areas have been
greatly enhanced and restored including the sub-tropical
Round Dell, the sophisticated Rose Garden and romantic
Italian Garden. Paradise Walk and the Italian Garden have
recently been replanted using new design schemes by garden
designer Chris Beardshaw.
An abundance of spring magnolias, camellias and
rhododendrons give way to exuberant summer borders of
roses and herbaceous plants followed by mellow autumn
colour. Definitely a garden to visit!
On Saturday 13th April, one of our major events of the year
namely our Annual Spring Show is being held in Ebrington
Village Hall. There will be spring flowers, bulbs, flower
arranging and children’s classes - 41 classes in total.
The show opens at 2.30pm - tea and cakes available.
A traditional village show!
After this we are off to Batsford Arboretum for a guided tour
of some of the world’s most beautiful and rare trees.
GARDEN NOTES FOR APRIL
Spring is the hardest time of year to write these notes, as we have no idea what
the weather will be doing tomorrow, let alone by the time your copy reaches you,
let alone by later in the month. Some of you may remember that in 1975 the first
snow of the winter fell at Easter, the last weekend of March. We had a brief flurry
on June 1st, but five days later the temperature was in the eighties. We thought
it a hot summer, until the long drought of 1976 which finally broke just in time
for the August Bank Holiday.
All the usual warnings apply: to beware of late frosts, and (particularly this year)
not to plant into waterlogged ground - though I do have a promising patch of
water-cress coming on. It doesn’t have to be planted in water, only to be kept
reasonably wet: perhaps near the kitchen door so that you can regularly empty a
bucket of water on it if required. There is also land cress, but I think water-cress
more tender and tasty.
Much of the year I use bits of old builders’ planks (old planks, not old builders),
when walking on my vegetable plots. It keeps my feet cleaner, and reduces
compaction of the soil (or mud). In a large flower bed I have permanently a
number of smallish slabs laid around and about as stepping stones, for the same
reason. If you have a route you regularly walk across the lawn, you might think
of stepping stones there: lay them with the surface a whisker below the surface
so as not to foul the mower.
I heard the suggstion that if we go on having wet winters, then more vegetable
growers might think of installing raised beds. But are we? “February fill-dyke”
is an old saying; but is it a wish for water to top up ground-water for summer, or
a description? Not always a good one if it is: it can be one of the driest months.
What plants or seeds might we be buying at our local plant centre, ready for
when we finally hang up our snorkles? especially if we have a conservatory,
green-house or cold-frame to give just a
little protection for the next few weeks?
One suggestion: to try to think what you
have (for no particular reason) not grown
for years. Excellent new plants come in
each year, but not all the old ones deserve
to be forgotten. You might revive pleasant
memories of years past. When did you last
put up a few sticks, as for runner beans, to
grow sweet peas (but you’ll be committing
yourself to frequent dead-heading)? When
did you last grow cosmos? or godetia? or
nasturiums? or asters? or zinnias? Have
you ever grown coleus? Go and enjoy the
search.
Look, too, for a few packets of seed to sow
some biennials in a few weeks’ time, to flower next year: sweet williams and
sweet-scented stocks or canterbury bells might be among the old-fashioned
favourites that you’ve not grown for years.
