Hughes and Lydiate. He has seen some
bright moments, and the Head Coach has
drawn on a lifetime in the game to show
patience and determination to guide the
Dragons through the current tumult in
Wales’s club game.
And John Cooney, Nathan Doak, David
McCann, Steven Kitshoff and many others
have forged, or are forging, more than
decent careers. Yet, despite such talents,
silverware hasn’t come to Ravenhill since
Mark McCall’s 2006 Celtic League winners.
Different, ever-changing times of course,
but at Ulster Rugby HQ that timeline is a
constant frustration.
Ulster’s resources are more complete, its
facilities now thoroughly professional on
the pitch, in the dressing room and in the
support teams. Rob Herring, Henderson,
Stockdale, Stewart, Timoney, James Hume,
Robert Baloucoune, Michael Lowry, Billy
Burns, Stuart McCloskey, Will Addison and
Kieran Treadwell have been involved with
the most successful Ireland team ever.

What better fillip to everyone involved in
the club, and those who loyally support
it, than an instant pick-me-up in the form
of an emphatic win this evening. Add in a
few tries and a glance at the league table
over this weekend might see Ulster hoisted
from mid-table and back into more a more
competitive position.
It’s a road ahead which could be thrilling,
and if there are hurdles to be cleared in the
months and years ahead, a victory over the
Dragons would offer real sunlight into the
gloom of the last fortnight.
