Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: 5 West Pub on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. The 

Negro family operates this establishment along with their other Cape 

May staple on the Washington Street Mall, Tisha’s. 

The vibe: It was a casual Sunday night at 5 West — the bar was full 

and nearly half the tables were occupied with guests chowing down 

on some delicious grub. Dan and Nicole were sat at a table right in 

the middle of the dining room with a perfect view of the plates ready 

to be served thanks to the restaurant’s open-concept kitchen. We also 

had a great view of the door to see everyone who came in to dine which 

became frequent once we sat down and business picked up. We checked 

out the menu and discussed some choices over the music and conversations 

that filled the room and as food passed by, we couldn’t wait to 

dig in. 

The food: After some indecisive menu scanning, we settled on 

truffle fries to start the meal. We haven’t been to 5 West in quite some 

time and there’s so much to choose from — wings, pot stickers, raviolis, 

meatballs and their famous loaded fries. We’ll be mixing it up with 

a different app the next time we visit. For dinner, Dan went with his 

favorite — Italian Pork sandwich packed with sauteed broccoli rabe 

and sharp provolone cheese. Dan’s from the Philadelphia area and he 

always says it tastes like something right out of Reading Terminal Market 

— a very big compliment in his book. Nicole kept it simple with a 

cobb salad topped with grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, crumbled gorgonzola 

and balsamic dressing — it also comes with tomatoes and red 

onion but not when Nicole orders it. We passed on dessert this time but 

a server holding their specialty bread pudding walked by and we nearly 

changed our minds. Another thing to keep in mind for our next visit. 

The takeaway: 5 West Pub is a great spot, especially during the 

off-season. They’re quick, consistent and the menu is filled with classic 

choices that are great for dine-in or takeout. Check out their outdoor 

patio once the weather warms up, too!

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Watching birds is humanity’s oldest 

hobby. Today it is America’s 

second most popular outdoor 

activity, second only to gardening. 

Before our ancestors 

vacated the limbs of trees, birds were our 

closest neighbors, warning us of danger, leading 

us to trees with ripening fruit. When our 

ancestors dropped to the ground and edged 

out onto the treeless plains of East Africa, 

circling vultures led us to the kills made by 

large land carnivores and their bounty of brain 

boosting marrow. When lions came prowling, 

it was the alarm calls of francolins and sand 

grouse that sent cognizant members of the 

tribe scampering for the nearest escarpment. 

These survivors became your ancestors. 

Those troop members who ignored the 

warning became lion scat. Lion scat doesn’t 

breed. In time the prognosticating powers of 

birds became integrated into our religions, 

lore, even political structures. Birds became 

emissaries of our gods who could be interpreted 

by augurs (literally, the bird watchers) 

who could divine something of godly intentions 

by noting the idiosyncrasies of birds. 

Silly, you think? Maybe, but those ancient 

mariners, the Vikings, took to carrying caged 

birds on ships. Once released the anxious 

sailors watched the bird. If it circled and 

landed back on the ship it meant “no land,” 

sail on. If the bird lined out and did not return 

the ship traced the course of the bird. 

The discovery of the New World was 

facilitated by birds when Columbus and his 

men saw a great flock of land birds overhead. 

Adjusting course to follow the flight of the 

birds they made landfall three days later on 

the island they christened San Salvidor. 

From now until summer, bird watchers 

can mark the calendar by the arrival and 

departure and behavior of birds, just like 

those ancient augurs. Right now, birds are 

signaling winter’s end with song. House 

Finch, Red-winged Blackbirds, mockingbirds 

and American robins are greeting the day 

with song, singing rings around their territories. 

In a few short weeks Eastern Phoebes 

and Louisiana Waterthrush will return from 

their wintering grounds to begin the northern 

breeding season in Belleplain State Forest. 

On St. Patrick’s Day the first Osprey will 

arrive, back from South America and on the 

first day of Spring you can expect Laughing 

Gulls to arrive with their mouths wide open. 

On the hunt for French fries? No, crying 

to celebrate the new season at the species 

breeding stronghold marshes of Cape May.

Well, this is it. It’s the weekend 

before Oscar! Are you excited? 

Are you rooting for a favorite or 

two? I know I am. Are you not 

even planning to watch? You’re 

not alone! Let’s look at a favorite category of 

mine that few people consider: short films. 

Last weekend, the Prosky family hosted 

a memorial for Stefan, a good friend and the 

Cape May Film Festival curator. It got me 

thinking about all the short films we watched 

to see what would be included in that weekend. 

The film festival is now long gone, but 

short films are still a favorite for me. 

There’s quite a collection of live-action 

short films nominated this year, many of 

which deal with serious subjects. Loss, grief, 

struggle to find freedom and peace, a quest for 

essential but endangered health care — and in 

it all a quirky piece from Wes Anderson! 

Whenever you talk about Oscarnominated 

shorts, you’re taking a trip worldwide. 

Let’s start in the UK with The After, 

an 18-minute film from Netflix that will

never leave you looking at your ride-share 

driver the same again. The initial sequence 

is gut-wrenching, and the grief that settles 

in makes you feel for everyone on this planet. 

Invincible was shot in Canada, and it tells 

the story of a troubled teen. His battle to find 

the cost of freedom overwhelms him. Why 

elevate the mood with the next nominee when 

you can feature two old men in a morgue 

chasing down loved ones in the Denmark film, 

Knight of Fortune? Another short, Red, White, 

and Blue, shot here in the U.S., showcases a 

difficult decision, financial hardship, and a 

forced road trip to find a health resolution — a 

story ripped from today’s headlines. 

Rounding out the short live-action category 

is Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of 

Henry Sugar. It’s a remarkable achievement. 

It cost much more to make and features 

big stars like Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev 

Patel, and Ben Kingsley. This short is typical 

Anderson… quirky and stylish AF! 

Should Anderson win? It would be his 

first Oscar despite eight nominations. I say 

no. As a guy who makes short flicks on the 

cheap, I’m always impressed and more envious 

of anyone with a boatload of cash making 

short films (okay… any films!). Give the little 

guys a chance at one moment of glory.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, get some sleep to offset Daylight Savings! 

As we prepare to spring ahead, make 

a plan to adjust to Daylight Savings 

Time. When Benjamin Franklin 

first proposed the idea in 1784, he 

hoped DST would allow people to 

work later into the night. This would save 

candles, and therefore, money. Unfortunately, 

our favorite founding father did not anticipate 

the havoc the twice-yearly time change 

would cause in our sleep patterns. It can take 

up to a week to adjust, and the disruption 

is especially hard on vulnerable populations 

like adolescents and those of us who get 

really cranky when we’re tired. In addition 

to increased crankiness, there are real-world 

consequences to this mass drowsiness — 

emergency room visits spike after we spring 

ahead, as do motor vehicle collisions. 

Even the concept of “saving daylight” is 

odd. It’s not possible — it’s like saving fun, 

or saving those moments when you could 

still hold your baby like a football. Daylight 

comes and goes regardless of what time we 

call it, and it’s up to us to make the most of it. 

If you’ve been raised to prioritize work over 

play, you may find yourself lingering in the 

office later during DST, saving Dr. Franklin’s

about six months ago. Before we made the big

a very neat and tidy apartment. It was what

the bargain. I am left either doing everything 

myself or – her favorite thing to do when I 

bring this up – is do her chores, like cleaning 

the dishes or cleaning the bathroom poorly.

It was our co-worker’s birthday last 

week. We are a small restaurant and always 

celebrate each other. He has worked with 

us for just under a year. We hung the balloons 

and ordered a birthday cake from Chez 

Michel. Well, to say he was not appreciative 

is an understatement. He ripped the balloons 

down, scowled at the cake and walked out, 

calling in later saying he wasn’t well enough 

to work. Things have been pretty tense since. 

He acts like this was normal behavior. Strange 

because he is very popular with the customers.

There’s something profoundly wrong with 

him, not the least of which are his manners.
