As we prepare to spring ahead, make a plan to adjust to Daylight Savings Time. When Benjamin Franklin first proposed the idea in 1784, he hoped DST would allow people to work later into the night. This would save candles, and therefore, money. Unfortunately, our favorite founding father did not anticipate the havoc the twice-yearly time change would cause in our sleep patterns. It can take up to a week to adjust, and the disruption is especially hard on vulnerable populations like adolescents and those of us who get really cranky when we’re tired. In addition to increased crankiness, there are real-world consequences to this mass drowsiness — emergency room visits spike after we spring ahead, as do motor vehicle collisions. Even the concept of “saving daylight” is odd. It’s not possible — it’s like saving fun, or saving those moments when you could still hold your baby like a football. Daylight comes and goes regardless of what time we call it, and it’s up to us to make the most of it. If you’ve been raised to prioritize work over play, you may find yourself lingering in the office later during DST, saving Dr. Franklin’s now-metaphorical candles. Just make sure the extra work doesn’t interfere with your new circadian rhythm. Protect yourself by booking a stay in one of Cape May’s coziest rooms. Many of the scientific strategies to handle sleep disruption work better in Cape May. Folk medicine holds that the negative ions found in sea air aid oxygen absorption, causing us to better regulate our body’s serotonin levels and we sleep better. The BBC asserts that it has nothing to do with ions; that better sleep by the sea is due to exercise, fresh air, sunshine and the sounds of the waves. I say it doesn’t matter why, as long as it works. Pack a sleep mask, earplugs, a book that’s a bit boring, and your favorite pajamas. Hire a dog sitter and turn off your alarms. Tuck yourself into a cozy room in the Peter Shields Inn and wake up to the sunrise over the sea. Try the Carroll Villa and wake up to the smell of coffee brewing at the Mad Batter. Ask a friend for their favorite bed and breakfast, and consider your preferred form of escape. Are you seeking the tropical vibe of Casablanca? Want to imagine your butler will attend you in the Gilded Age luxury of Mason Cottage? Perhaps you want to lounge by a fireplace at the Queen Victoria? Scrutinize the sleep-inducing details online — Lokal prioritizes good sheets, for example, and the Wilbraham Suites will let you soak in a jacuzzi tub.
