Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: This week we’re talking more about where we’re 

snackin’! We grabbed some goodies from Golden Stop, the small coffee 

shop between Flying Fish Studio and Pedego on Park Boulevard. 

The vibe: When you step inside Golden Stop, you’re greeted with 

warm lighting, a fridge packed with fresh jucies and salads, fashionable 

merchandise like earrings and tees, plus a case of tempting sweets at 

the counter where you’ll order a beverage. You can enjoy your order 

at a table along the wall with a long banquette complete with comfy 

and colorful pillows, at one of their cozy booths, or kick back on their 

beautiful leather couches. There’s even a small play area to keep the 

kids occupied while you sip your morning brew. We stop in quite often 

and we’ve also noticed it’s a great spot to get some work done. For all 

you work-from-home employees, keep Golden Stop in your mind for a 

change of scenery from your home office. 

The snacks: Like we said, we visit pretty often —our morning coffee 

runs out just in time for us to run over for our second... or third depending 

on the day. Kayla’s enjoyed a hot French Toast latte, a feature on 

their holiday menu that we’re lucky they can still make this time of year. 

Nicole sticks to a cold beverage no matter the temperature and went 

with an iced salted caramel latte. We also couldn’t overlook the tempting 

sweets we mentioned earlier and enjoyed a fresh chocolate chip 

cookie and chocolate croissant. It was the perfect pick-me-up during 

our busy day. 

The takeaway: Don’t be fooled by this “snackin’” column. Golden 

Stop also offers some delicious breakfast and lunch options that we’ve 

enjoyed including avocado feta toast, waffles, breakfast tacos, chicken 

cheesesteaks, broccoli and cheddar soup, grilled cheese and smoothies. 

They’re open 8am-2pm daily in West Cape May. Bring your laptop, 

bring the kiddos, or just pop in when you’re on the go. Keep an eye on 

their socials for seasonal specials and other menu additions throughout 

the year.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Any day now, the CMBO Spring 

Watch at Coral Avenue will spot 

their first Laughing Gull, Cape May’s 

true Herald of Spring. 

These “black-headed gulls” are 

a fixture on beaches, and especially over the 

tidal wetlands where the handsome birds 

breed, depositing their greenish, brown spotted 

eggs on floating rafts of wrack — a safeguard 

against encroaching tides. Named for 

their raucous call, the largest Laughing Gull 

colony lies behind Cape May’s barrier islands. 

Best known for their boardwalk French fry 

pilfering predilections, the birds are clever, 

adaptive and omnivorous. You wave your fry 

in the air or get careless with your picnic 

baskets, you pay the price. The gulls are just 

being gulls. 

The cry of Laughing Gulls is as much a 

part of the summer shore experience as the 

thunder of the surf and the tang of salt laden 

air. Lucky us that such a handsome gull reigns 

here. One of 21 gull species found in North 

America, (50 in the world) it is also among the 

most striking of the gulls — especially now 

when the bills and legs of breeding adults are 

flushed with red. 

Often found patrolling the beach in 

search of food, the birds also hover over turbulent 

water (like the rips) snapping up bait 

fish driven to the surface by Stripers and 

Bluefish. A good place to search for your first 

LAGU of the year is the Ferry Terminal where 

newly arrived birds languish. But by May, the 

birds will be all over the marshes, establishing 

mates and territories. 

Come May, with ravenous chicks to be 

fed, adults feast upon the pinhead sized eggs 

of spawning Horseshoe Crabs which adults 

disgorge into the yawing, food begging bills 

of young. The parade of gulls to and from 

Bay beaches is nonstop and the lipid rich 

porridge of crab eggs grows quickly, fledging 

in 35 days from egg to juvenile. Juveniles are 

mostly brownish not slate gray above and 

lack black heads. But we won’t be seeing this 

year’s crop of young until July or August, at 

which point they may dominate flocks loafing 

on the beach and adults, worn out by weeks 

of parental care, do their best to avoid these 

teenagers. 

By December, they are gone. Rarely do 

you find a wintering Laughing Gull in Cape 

May. Which is why their arrival in March is 

celebrated. The birds mark not only the return 

of Spring but harvestable and game fish to our 

waters and the lucrative tourist season. And 

that’s nothing to Ha-ha-hah-hah-Hah! about.

Want to know what’s wrong with 

Oscar? Look at the winner of its 

short live-action film this year. It 

shows a more systemic problem. 

Wes Anderson’s short film 

entry, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, was 

the only nominee with Hollywood big moola 

and A-list stars. It was good, but was it better 

than the others? No. It won because it had 

all that money. Anderson didn’t even show 

up to get his award. They announced the win 

toward the beginning of the show, and I knew 

this was not going to be a good night for anything 

but Hollywood’s big budget films. 

So the night’s winner was Oppenheimer… 

but you already knew that. How was the film 

eligible this year with new rules encouraging 

diversity? Certainly, the cast and primary 

crew were not diverse. Some speculate 

that the primary diversity standards met 

by Oppenheimer came from its big studio. 

Executives of Universal Studios have “some” 

diversity in marketing leadership. 

Guess now I need to watch the movie to 

The Movie Column

speak intelligently about it. The parts that 

I’ve seen so far look impressive. Not surprising 

because Christopher Nolan doesn’t make 

crap. But how can other films compete against 

the Hollywood machine? 

It can happen! Over the past few years, 

indie films competed well! Last year’s Best 

Picture, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once had 

diversity, grit and soul. A year before that, 

CODA was an independent film that proved 

it could stand up against the machine. Before 

that was another indie, Nomandland, and it was 

Parasite before that ( yep, indie). 

Thankfully, and as hoped for here in this 

column, Da’Vine Joy Randolph won 2024 Best 

Supporting Actress for her outstanding work 

in The Holdovers. American Fiction, also noted 

here, won Best Adapted Screenplay. Apart 

from that, it was an Oppenheimer night. 

A better award show is Film Independent’s 

Spirit Awards on YouTube, which were a week 

ago. These are exclusively for independently 

produced movies. American Fiction’s Jeffrey 

Wright got a Spirit Award for best lead performance. 

The Holdovers won three Spirit Awards 

— Randolph won here as well for her supporting 

work. Past Lives’ Celine Song took best 

director. Oppenheimer? Not nominated here. 

How about we all stop watching predictable 

and big Hollywood Oscar and turn to the 

Spirit instead? At least let’s all agree to watch

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, grab a cup of joe! 

On March 17, you might raise a glass 

to St. Patrick. On March 19, consider 

raising a mug to St. Joseph. St. 

Joseph’s Day is an excellent day for 

a “cup of joe.” 

Coffee has been known as “joe” since at 

least the early 20th century. The origin of the 

term is a bit muddy. According to Martinson 

Coffee, the company’s founder Joe Martinson, 

began selling roasted coffee beans from a 

pushcart in 1898. His neighbors in Lower 

Manhattan looked forward to his door-todoor 

deliveries and began calling the resultant 

beverage a “cup of joe.” By 1908, Martinson 

had a small factory producing ground coffee 

and Joe, an apparently clever marketer, when 

his company expanded to deliver coffee to 

restaurants and hotels throughout New York 

City, he eschewed ordinary delivery trucks. 

Instead, he painted the Martinson Coffee logo 

on several Rolls Royces and dressed his drivers 

in chauffeur uniforms, thus portraying 

Martinson as a luxury brand. At some point, 

Martinson Coffee trademarked “cup of joe.” 

Though Martinson bought the trademark, 

another company may deserve credit for “cup 

of joe.” During the first World War, the rations 

for American soldiers included instant coffee 

from the George Washington Coffee Refining 

Company. According to this origin story, their 

product packaging used “Geo,” a then-common 

abbreviation of “George.” Soldiers pronounced 

“Geo” as “Joe.” (The doughboys are 

also credited with popularizing the addition of 

salt to coffee. As anyone who has ever enjoyed 

a cup in Cape May’s salty air will tell you, salt 

makes the brew a little more mellow, which 

was especially important to soldiers who 

often had their instant coffee cold.) Linguists 

don’t agree with either theory, asserting it 

more likely comes from combining two of 

coffee’s other nicknames. “Java” and “mocha” 

became “jamoke,” and later, “joe.” 

There are plenty of places to treat yourself 

to a nice cup of joe in Cape May. Be a hero to 

your household and bring a four-cup carrier 

back from Wawa. Visit Magic Brain and sit 

and watch the Washington Street Mall wake 

up. Get a bagel and coffee from Avalon Bagel 

— or something sweet from Madison’s Bakery 

— and cross the street to sit on the promenade.

daughter. Easter is right around the corner and 

I am worried that the competing Mimis are 

going to send her into yet another sugar coma. 

Last year, Mimi Number One bought her a 

custom Easter Basket from the Fudge Kitchen, 

while Mimi Number Two gave her a talking 

Easter Card with a $50 gift certificate from 

Louisa’s Chocolate Bar. Naturally, my husband 

and I monitored all of this, but it took all 

our resources. The Mimis grilled our daughter 

about whose gift was better. My question is 

what do we do to corral these two? Neither of

Easter bonnet for Easter Brunch at Uncle 

Bill’s Pancake House or the Blue Pig. Then 

hop over to Rotary Park and enter the Easter

categorized), Family, Dad aka gentleman and 

wait for it — Best Dressed Mimi aka adult lady. 

None of this will stop them from overindulging 

on the candy. Competing Mimis can’t be 

stopped but can be “corralled.” Keep up the 

vigilance and all will be well.

My son, who is 10, wants a dog. My wife 

and I were thinking of giving him one for Easter, 

but my wife wants a pedigree puppy and I 

am dead set against that. There are many lessons 

to be learned from having a dog, but I feel 

the bigger lesson comes from rescuing. I don’t 

want to miss the boat and end up Easter morning 

with just a basket of candy. What can I say

old. She is sweet when approached and

Sienna loves to play and be silly. She is up-todate

CHAMP is a swseet boy who has had some 

bad. His owner died and the family who took 

him in couldn’t afford vet care. He was later 

surrenders to a kill-shelter, but they found his

the shelter to take him back. Champ has 

diabetes and is on the road to insulin. He is a 

good-natured cat who deserves a good home. 

CHAMPION suffers from a disorder called 

Cerebellar Hypoplasia, but doesn’t let that 

slow him down! CH can cause jerky movements 

or trouble walking. Champion feels 

safe when cuddled and carried. He is a sweetheart 

and loves to sleep next to his humans.
