Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: This week we hit up a Cape May breakfast staple — Uncle 

Bill’s Pancake House on the corner of Beach Avenue and Perry Street. 

The vibe: We arrived for a later breakfast on Sunday morning, and 

we must’ve just missed the post-church crowd. The counter was full of 

a couple different groups finishing up their meals, but there were some 

tables open in the dining room. We were sat in a cozy booth with a perfect 

view of the kitchen doors — the 12 plates of pancakes these servers 

stack up their arms never stops being impressive... Uncle Bill’s has been 

operating this way, providing personal, family friendly service for over 

57 years. This and the food certainly keep us coming back. 

The food: Dan and Nicole make it a habit to visit Uncle Bill’s a few 

times a season and with them opening last week, we were due for our 

pancake fix. We grabbed some coffee and juice to start and then it surprisingly 

took us a moment to decide what to order. Uncle Bill’s offers 

breakfast all day and over 15 different types of pancakes plus omelets, 

waffles, French toast, sandwiches... the list goes on. Dan switched 

things up from his usual, peanut butter pancakes with chocolate chips. 

Instead, he went the savory route with creamed chipped beef over a 

waffle and a side of over-easy eggs. Nicole kept things simple with an 

order of plain buttermilk pancakes and a side of pork roll. We’re not 

sure what our favorite part was, the food itself or how fast it came out. 

Dan and Nicole were starving so let’s say the latter. All our plates were 

cleaned, and it was a great way to kick off a relaxing Sunday. 

The takeaway: Uncle Bill’s is open daily — Monday-Friday from 

7am-2pm and Saturday-Sunday from 6:30am-2pm. Like we said, they 

serve breakfast all day, but if you’re not much of a breakfast person, 

check out their lunch menu packed with sandwiches including fried 

flounder, grilled cheese and cheesesteaks. Once the weather warms up, 

Uncle Bill’s also offers outdoor dining at tables surrounding the building. 

Being that they’re right across from the beach, you can enjoy your 

pancakes with the sounds of crashing waves just steps away.

This time of year is a treasure hunt 

for bird watchers. New species are 

arriving every day. You can mark the 

calendar with them. Great Horned 

Owls calling in January… Waterfowl 

migrating in February… Robins singing in 

March… Osprey arrive March 17. The first 

Purple Martin is appearing, now...Phoebe and 

Laughing Gull any day. Pine Warblers singing 

at Belleplain… Yellow-throated Warblers 

close behind. 

You can always count on nature to maintain 

a regular schedule. It’s real. It’s affirming. 

It’s natural. It’s how our ancestors marked 

time. Take your average birder, put them in a 

sensory deprivation chamber for a year and 

give them their freedom. In one hour, they’ll 

pinpoint the date give or take a week, based on 

the composition of birds that they find. 

Yes, just as breeding birds are arriving. 

Wintering species are departing. The ranks of 

sea ducks are thinning. Snow Geese are heading 

north. Yellow-rumped Warblers are donning 

touches of yellow. By April they’ll be on 

their way to breeding territories in the boreal 

forests of Canada, the surge of neotropical 

migrants. Black-throated Green Warblers...

You say you’re not a birder so don’t recognize 

those names. I say, “how sad.” Being 

in Cape May and not knowing birds is like 

not knowing the name of your next-door 

neighbor. 

Indeed, bird watching is humanity’s old- 

est preoccupation. You say you’ve tried bird 

watching but found it too frustrating? I say 

you had a poorly designed bird field guide 

and binoculars that didn’t work. All you really 

need is eyes and ears working within accepted 

tolerance specs. Let the birds do the rest. 

There are smartphone apps that even 

identify the birds you hear. Downloaded for 

free, Merlin identifies not only the birds singing 

close by but even the single note utterances 

of distant birds. And you don’t have to 

name every bird down to the level of species. 

Putting a bird in the right family group is 

enough to start and you can do this already. 

I’ll bet you can identify 10 species of birds 

right now — Robin, Blue Jay, crow, Canada 

Goose, Great-black-backed Gull, swan, 

Turkey Vulture, goldfinch, blackbird, dove…

toward getting all the rest. Ten thousand possible

We can all agree that during the 

highs and lows of life, it is crucial 

to have family around — either 

the one you have or the one you 

build. Let’s look at two of many 

television shows where family is integrated. 

The Equalizer and Blue Bloods both started new 

seasons last month — for the latter, it’s the last 

of the series after more than a decade. 

The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn 

McCall, an ex-CIA operative living a mysterious 

life in New York City. Her skills help desperate 

people in life-threatening situations. 

This is the third reimagining of the character, 

which has gone from TV in the 1980s with 

Edward Woodward as the lead to movies in 

the 2000s with Denzel Washington, and now 

back to TV with Latifah. In this iteration, the 

character is surrounded by family, namely her 

daughter, Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes) and 

her Aunt Viola (Lorraine Toussaint). 

Integrating family members for Latifah’s 

version of the McCall character is somewhat 

new. This wasn’t as major a part of the former 

The Movie Column

1980s TV series with Woodward and in the 

movie version, Denzel Washington doesn’t 

have children. Queen Latifah as a single mom 

in this new telling of the vigilante story makes 

her a more relatable character. No wonder 

fans are back enjoying season four. 

Moving from vigilantes to cops on the 

street — Blue Bloods is about an intergenerational 

family in law enforcement. Sadly, 

this will be the series finale after 14 seasons. 

The show stars Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) 

as the New York City police commissioner. 

Frank’s father (Len Cariou) was the former 

commissioner. Frank’s children are detective 

Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Assistant District 

Attorney Erin (Bridget Moynahan), and officer 

Jamie (Will Estes). The show follows all 

these characters to highlight the challenges 

they face in their fight for justice. 

But at the end of the day, they gather for a 

family dinner to discuss their work and personal 

lives. This is a perfect example of how 

a supportive family can be in the face of life’s 

turmoil. Special note: Frank’s best friend and 

former co-worker Lenny Ross was played by 

the beloved character actor Treat Williams, 

who was tragically killed in a car accident 

last June. A tribute episode for Williams aired 

earlier this month. 

These two shows remind us that when 

setbacks come our way, you can always count 

on those people you call family!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, be a little foolish! 

Treat yourself to some foolishness this 

spring. Not only is it polite to let 

a little kid think he fooled you on 

April 1, the giggle you get is good 

for your health — laughter enhances 

oxygen intake and reduces stress. Of course, 

it’s not just kids who play the fool. The State 

of Delaware once posted a faux news release 

about a tunnel linking Cape May to Lewes. 

Similarly silly announcements alleged that the 

Washington Street Mall would be enclosed, 

that Morey’s Piers was replacing French fries 

with kale chips, and that Cape May Brew Co. 

was turning dehydrated beer into jewelry. A 

bit of foolishness is good for the soul. 

The word “fool” comes from the Latin 

“follis” for “bellows,” because, like a tool to 

force air into a fire, a fool’s head holds only air. 

“Fool” later referred to an entertainer whose 

job was to amuse guests with magic, music, 

juggling and jokes. The verb “to fool” may 

mean to mislead in a serious way, or to trick in 

an amusing way — the difference often comes 

in the attitude of the fooled person. 

It takes courage to make a fool of yourself, 

according to Charlie Chaplin, and you have 

to risk making a fool of yourself to step up to 

an open microphone. Support some future 

stars at open mic nights at Nauti Spirits, 916 

Shunpike Road, Thursdays from 6 to 9pm, 

where they blend “spirited history” with performances 

by local artists and musicians. 

Treasure seekers are disappointed by 

“fool’s gold,” but pyrite has its own value. As 

its name suggests, pyrite can produce sparks, 

and is useful as a firestarter. Native Americans 

used polished pyrite as mirrors. The presence 

of pyrite can also indicate that there is 

gold or copper nearby. Similarly, when you’re 

beachcombing, don’t dismiss any treasures 

you do find. You may find fabulous sea glass 

while looking for Cape May diamonds along 

the bay shore, or diamonds while looking 

for shells. These things don’t have monetary 

value, but they make great souvenirs. Guests 

of Congress Hall can join a Cape May diamond 

hunt on Saturday March 30 from 10am

“Fool” is also a dessert, usually made with 

mashed fruit and custard or whipped cream. 

The name may come from the French word 

“fouler” which means “to mash,” or it may be 

that, like trifle, its culinary cousin, the dessert 

was called a fool because it was insubstantial.

The Longest Yarn is a three-dimensional wool tapestry, 

knitted and crocheted by thousands of volunteers worldwide. 

The tapestry will tour through Europe before making its way to 

Cape May County where it will be on display April-September 2025 

at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. 

The afternoon will feature a buffet with beer, wine, a silent auction, 

and a tribute to Cape May County’s own D-Day heroes.

I asked my husband what he wanted for his 

birthday. He said he wanted nothing except to 

play golf and “sit in front of the TV.” So, I did 

nothing except give him a card. It was very 

apparent the next day that he expected more. 

What he wanted, I don’t know, but whatever it 

was, I failed him. I don’t know how to make up 

for this. On the other hand, was I expected to

Asking people what they want for any 

occasion is tricky. Some people don’t think it 

is inappropriate to make what they may deem, 

demands. As adults, we sometimes think it 

childish to “make a fuss.” However, most people 

want some kind of acknowledgement of 

their special day. The Answer Lady suggests 

you make reservations at Oyster Bay. When 

you make the reservation, ask them to bring 

a dessert with a candle at the end of the meal. 

We are sure they will be very accommodating 

and what a surprise it will be. After he blows 

out the belated birthday candle, offer an apology 

and a promise not to be quite so literal next 

year. And don’t forget to leave a good tip.

though he loves cats.

and is crate trained. Kyra is a sensitive girl who 

appreciates a kind voice and a pat. She previously 

lived with children and another dog but 

would need a slow introduction to cats. Kyra

bad. His owner died and the family who took 

him in couldn’t afford vet care. He was later 

surrenders to a kill-shelter, but they found his 

Cape May County microchip and they contacted 

the shelter to take him back. Champ has 

diabetes and is on the road to insulin. He is a 

good-natured cat who deserves a good home. 

ISHMAEL (Ish)is a retired outside tomcat. 

Just under a year ago, this guy was brought 

to the shelter because he was found limping 

with bloody paws. It turned out he suffered 

from Pillow Foot. Ish was treated and is back 

in good health. At about eight years old, he’s 

calm and quiet, but very sweet. If interested in 

this boy, contact the shelter. 

CELINA was found fending for herself in a 

residential neighborhood. She was trapped 

as a stray, but it was later discovered she was 

a domestic cat. Celina is about two-to-three 

years old and tested light positive for FIV. She 

is up to date on all vaccinations and spayed. 

Celina would be good in a home with children, 

so if interested, contact the shelter.
