Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Dogtooth Bar & Grill on Taylor Avenue in Wildwood, 

across the street from their sister property, Poppi’s. These two restaurants 

are from the same team behind MudHen Brewing Company. Living 

in Wildwood Crest, Dogtooth is one of our favorite spots to grab 

a drink or dinner. Late last week, Nicole and Dan took up a couple of 

barstools for some of both! 

The vibe: It was on the later side of the evening and the Phillies 

were playing the Rockies which had the entire restaurant in high spirits. 

We hopped on a couple barstools ready to enjoy a great night out... and 

watched the Phillies win 7-6! 

The drinks: There’s rarely a time we go to Dogtooth without having 

a couple margaritas. Dan went for his usual classic margarita on the 

rocks with salt and Nicole enjoyed her favorite watermelon margarita 

on the rocks with a sugar rim. We may have had more than one, but we 

each had a great day, so why not? 

The food: Our favorite part of a Dogtooth visit! While their Wing 

Night Wednesday was super tempting — eight wings for $10 in your 

choice of buffalo, lava, teriyaki chili glaze, house BBQ or hot honey 

sriracha — we just went with a few staples that are almost always our 

picks. Nicole went for the buffalo chop chop salad, but not without 

starting with French onion soup (one of the best in the area aas far as 

we’re concerned.) Dan also couldn’t pass up the French onion soup, 

and for dinner had the Cowboy Burger — Monterey jack cheese blend, 

bacon, homemade bbq sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion. He stuck with 

a side of chips and cleared the entire plate while Nicole boxed up her 

small portion of leftovers. 

The takeaway: Dogtooth is open year-round and a great spot for 

lunch or dinner. Specials are always changing, happy hour is3-5pm 

Monday-Friday with awesome deals, and their daily specials will keep 

you coming back all week long. We’re already planning a trip back to 

take advantage of Wing Night Wednesday!

just returned to our Maurice Riverside 

town after a five-month foray to 

California to find Spring fully in control 

and the air filled with Osprey, whose piping 

calls were a fanfare of welcome. 

A trip down to the riverside park put me 

in sight of five nesting pairs — the same as 

last year. Not long ago, there were hardly five 

Osprey nests in the entire state. Now I can 

see five in a scan. The biggest change has to 

do with the pair nesting in the parking lot. 

Evicted last year by an electrical short circuit 

that blew up their utility pole nest. They relocated 

to a platform swiftly erected by Atlantic 

Electric crews but too late in the season. 

This year the nest is complete, and the 

adult is already incubating eggs. The crossriver 

pair is still in the process of sorting things 

out, but they appear to have chosen a different 

platform. Down river, the veteran pair and 

the up-river birds seem well on their way 

to another successful season. The pair that 

nests on the bridge abutment is present but 

the nest is still in its formative stage. All this

ing is poor, nests may produce one-to-two 

young. Last year was a good year but last 

year’s young will not breed until 2025 or 2026. 

Among Osprey, juveniles typically remain on 

wintering grounds in South America until 

their second or third year. If you are not ready 

to breed, there is scant reason to undertake 

the risky journey north. 

But from now until August, the piping 

call of Osprey will enliven the sky with the 

sound of the season. Beginning in August, 

our birds will disperse, beginning their long 

ocean-crossing journey to the Amazon Basin. 

Northern breeders will migrate through Cape 

May until November. But now it’s time to 

breed and, for the next four months, human 

residents and visitors will rarely be out of 

earshot of these grand birds of prey. Lucky us, 

to live in a corner of the planet where Osprey 

are plentiful. Indeed, with the exception of 

the Chesapeake Bay region, I know of no 

place on earth that boasts a higher density of 

nesting Osprey than New Jersey’s Delaware 

Bayshore.

This is good news for human residents 

because high numbers of breeding Osprey 

attest to healthy fish numbers and this is the

Remember that stuffed animal or 

imaginary friend you spent time 

with as a kid? They may have helped 

you deal with stress, grief, or just 

helped you fall asleep. Well convert 

it into a horror movie and you get Imaginary! 

In this movie the childhood friend does the 

opposite of yours — and causes a lot of stress 

and grief in a family’s life, and you won’t be 

getting any sleep after watching. 

The film follows the story of Jessica 

(DeWanda Wise), a children’s author married 

to a musician named Max (Tom Payne). 

Together they’re raising his younger daughter 

Alice (Pyper Braun) and his older daughter 

Taylor (Taegen Burns). Jessica’s father is being 

cared for in a mental hospital all while she is 

dealing with an unexpected situation regarding 

Alice. She and the family decide to move 

into her childhood home... where the horror 

story begins. 

The drama starts when Jessica plays a 

game of hide and seek with Alice. While Alice 

is looking for a place to hide, she stumbles

upon a door in the basement behind which she 

finds a stuffed bear that she names Chauncy. 

She starts spending a lot of time with the bear 

and eventually claims the bear is telling her 

what to do. The imaginary friend’s actions 

just grow more intense after Max goes on a 

trip with his band, leaving Jessica alone with 

Alice and Taylor. 

Critics panned this movie and audiences 

were not much kinder. I can imagine what the 

problems may have been, not having seen the 

reviews. The storyline involves a small child, 

and I’m not sure if anyone is comfortable 

with someone that young in precarious situations 

being bossed around by an evil spirit. 

Maybe they were underwhelmed by the performances 

from the film’s less accomplished 

actors. There was also a story arc about a 

babysitter that came off very confusing. Was 

she good or bad? I was lost myself. 

All that aside, the movie had some 

redeeming qualities. This is a very scary 

movie, but it also shows us how grief can be 

just as frightening. Like an imaginary friend, 

loss can follow us around wherever we go. 

One thing that can help us deal with grief is 

the people we choose to surround ourselves 

with, whether it be family or close friends. 

These situations are real, and the solutions 

should not be “imaginary.” 

When we face a challenge, whatever creatures 

there may be, seeking help from our true 

friends can go a long way in working through 

it and finding genuine resolution.

It’s time for one of Cape May’s most popular 

charity events, Feasting on History, 

which celebrates the educational mission 

of Historic Cold Spring Village. This 

restaurant gala may be popular precisely 

because it doesn’t require that you eat like an 

early American. 

The period that HCSV recreates is the 

post-colonial era after the Revolutionary War. 

During this time, Americans relied on food 

they could gather or grow, and enjoyed much 

less variety. Gardeners planted native plants 

like corn, cabbage, sweet potatoes, beans, 

squash and pumpkin. Native fruits like blueberries, 

and imports like apples and peaches, 

were stewed or baked with the excess preserved 

by drying or making jams. Nuts and 

wild vegetables like ramps would be gathered 

to enhance the meals, which might be seasoned 

with nutmeg, pepper or thyme. 

Acorns were particularly useful. They 

were boiled to lessen their bitterness, then 

ground into flour or cornmeal, and their oil 

was gathered into jars to be used as cooking 

oil. Candied acorns — cooked in butter or 

grease with sugar or honey — were a popular 

treat. Hunters brought home venison, turkey, 

duck and small game, and farmers bred sheep, 

cattle and pigs. Every bit of the animal would 

be used, and organ meats were considered 

special treats. On the Jersey Cape, fish and 

shellfish were essential parts of the diet. 

Water often couldn’t be trusted, and milk 

was hard to preserve without refrigeration, so 

most people, including children, drank beer 

and cider. Early Americans preferred sweet 

wines and sweetened alcoholic punches, 

often made with rum. Coffee’s popularity had 

begun to grow, but tea still reigned supreme. 

You won’t face these limits at Feasting on 

History. Instead, you’ll be treated to a wide 

variety of dishes. As you sample dishes, make 

a complete meal of vegetables, or live your 

childhood dream and have all desserts for dinner. 

Try salsas featuring local produce, fresh 

seafood dishes, and tiny kebab-like creations. 

Sample wine, beer, sodas and spirits from 

local hot spots. 

Feasting on History, now in its 23rd year, 

is at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation 

Museum at the Cape May Airport on Tuesday, 

May 7 at 6pm. Tickets are $85 per person or 

$750 for a pre-paid reserved table of 10 — 

there is open seating for individuals. Advance 

ticket purchase is required, so please make

ideas. My mother echoes both their sentiments, 

“Do you know how much money I’ve 

spent on showers over the years for women I

You may not win the war, but maybe you 

can win the skirmish by controlling the event. 

Tell your mothers you want a shower with 

a twist. You want it held at a posh place like

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Limit the number of guests to just the immediate 

family and the wedding party. Limit the 

money spent to under $50. Of course, the latter 

is a suggestion and those who feel so inclined 

may choose to ignore it, but you’ve given it a 

good try. Another option would be to choose a 

larger gift that all could contribute. A top-ofthe-line 

grill, for example, from Swain’s or a 

nice piece of patio furniture. 

Dear Answer Lady 

I adore my big brother, but he is too overprotective. 

He scrutinizes my boyfriends like 

an FBI agent. Our father died when I was 12 

and he was 17. He has always looked out for 

me. I don’t feel my life choices have been all 

that bad, but whatever they are — they must 

be mine. I have tried to talk to him, but he dismisses 

me. I am 27 years old, with a degree in 

biology and a good job. One problem is I live in 

the garage apartment of my parent’s house, so 

he is closer to my day-to-day life than normal. 

But I love living in that house. I love his wife 

and kids. I just want him to back off. — Help.

pizza from Lucky Bones, a bottle of vino from 

Joe Canals and sit down with him to delineate 

the rules of engagement. Be specific. He can 

scrutinize said beau in the first phase of dating, 

but after a month, he must retreat. Tell 

him if he doesn’t ease up, you will indeed have 

to look for another place to live. And mean it.

KONA arrived at the shelter when his owner 

moved and couldn’t take him along. He is a 

pleasant senior boy who loves to go on walks 

with his excellent leash skills. Kona lived with 

children and loves car rides. He is also dog and 

cat social, so he’d be the perfect family companion 

for anyone willing to give him the love 

he deserves. 

COOPER is an amazing pup who’s been at the 

shelter since 2021. This two-year-old boy is 

crate trained, has wonderful leash skills and 

loves to splash around in the pool. Cooper has 

lived with children and would make a great 

family pet. He does not get along with other 

dogs so he would need to be the only pet. 

Please give this guy a chance! 

OCEAN is a young, sweet girl who was surrendered 

to the shelter when her family could 

no longer care for her. She loves to be with 

humans and quickly leans in for pets. Ocean 

enjoys going on walks and has a lot of energy, 

but her leash skills are good. She is great with 

children and loves car rides. She’d make a 

great family pet.

him in couldn’t afford vet care. He was later 

surrenders to a kill-shelter, but they found his 

Cape May County microchip and they contacted 

the shelter to take him back. Champ has 

diabetes and is on the road to insulin. He is a 

good-natured cat who deserves a good home. 

SCOOPS is a four-year-old handsome guy 

who is in good health outside skin allergies. 

It’s nothing that a good, grain-free diet and 

flea control won’t take care of. Give Scoops a 

nice, indoor home and he’ll be happy — plus 

he’s also great with children. His vaccinations 

are up to date and he’s neutered. If interested 

in meeting Scoops, contact the shelter. 

CLOVER was found with her siblings living 

under a deck in a trailer park community. 

The shelter suspects they were abandoned 

because they aren’t feral. She is a bit shy but 

warms up quickly and loves to play. Clover is 

about four or five months old and good with 

other dogs and cats. Please contact the shelter, 

if you’d like to adopt this sweet cat.
