Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Taco Caballito on the corner of Beach Avenue and Decatur 

Street. They offer a great space in the two-story restaurant to grab 

delicious drinks and food with a beautiful beachfront view. 

The vibe: It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon — the warm weather 

and busy beachfront really made us feel like summer was just around 

the corner. We put our names in for a table — only about a 25-minute 

wait — and took a walk on the beach to kill some time. Keep that in 

mind for future visits! Once we got the text that our table was ready, we 

were led to a high top toward the front of the restaurant, next to the bar. 

The bar was full of guests closing out their weekend with a margarita or 

two... which we did, too! For a busy day, everything came out quick and 

was wonderful. Our server Amanda didn’t miss a beat and had our food 

out in record time. It was a great way to spend our Sunday. 

The drinks: Like I mentioned, we had to close out the weekend 

with a couple of margaritas. Dan enjoyed his favorite jalapeño margarita 

with salt and Nicole enjoyed a Surf’s Up strawberry margarita with 

sugar. We stuck to just one each and they paired with our tacos perfectly. 

The food: We started with chips and queso which we finished in 

minutes... we were quite hungry. Dan then enjoyed three cheesesteak 

birria tacos — ribeye steak, cheese, pico de gallo on corn tortillas served 

with consommé Nicole had two crispy fish tacos — beer-battered cod, 

Asian slaw, mango salsa, avocado and chipotle aioli on a flour tortilla. 

Their tacos are available in orders of two or three, but if you can’t 

decide, they offer a variety of taco samplers so you can enjoy a couple 

different tacos. 

The takeaway: Taco Caballito is open from 12pm. The same team 

behind this restaurant has some exciting things on the horizon including 

their two new restaurants — Port, previously Harbor View on Ocean 

Drive, and Fish House on Sunset Beach. Keep an eye on their socials for 

updates on their new businesses!

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Usually, I enjoy running into other 

birders in the field. Not this time. In 

keeping with the seasonal timetable, 

my friend Don and I elected to 

head over to Belleplain State Forest, 

a regional hotbed for birders searching for 

migrating and breeding warbler species. 

We arrived at “the bridge,” a site known to 

host breeding Hooded Warblers — a designer 

bird that looks like a golden bird wearing 

a black helmet. Ahead of us were a couple 

armed with several thousand dollars of camera 

equipment and the clear ambition of photographing 

the resident male warbler singing 

near the top of a tree and presenting a poor 

angle for the Facebook likes they wanted. 

Whipping out his cell phone, one of the pair 

directed a recorded snatch of Hooded Warbler 

song at the singing bird — an ersatz challenge 

to a bird singing rings around its territory. 

“I’ve got to say something,” my friend Don 

advised and, with my support, did. Pointing 

out to the photographer that using playbacks 

in a popular birding site on a resident bird was 

intrusive and detrimental to the bird trying to 

woo a mate and keep other rivals out of his 

airspace. Scowling, the photographer said, 

“he’s been doing this a long time.” To which 

I replied, “Well that’s hardly good news.” 

Taking the hint, and to his credit, he pocketed 

his phone. For you non-birders reading 

this, the issue is ethics and deference to other 

living things. Playing a bird’s song to a territorial 

bird is akin to kicking in a person’s 

front door and shouting: “I’m here to kick 

your ass, steal your house and abscond with 

your wife.” 

At the very least, a stress inducing assertion 

and one the resident bird having no real 

rival to confront cannot deal with. A one-time 

exchange may not constitute an undue imposition 

on the bird. But at prime birding locations 

repeated harassment has been known 

to drive resident birds away, into marginal 

habitats where their chances of securing a 

mate are diminished. 

The proliferation of smartphones has 

resulted in a plague of birders using recorded 

playbacks to entice close approach, thus 

interfering with the lives of birds, the very 

antithesis of bird etiquette. Our ambition to 

enjoy a close encounter with a wonderful bird 

spoiled, Don and I departed, knowing that as 

soon as we left, the photographer would likely 

resume his unethical practice. Old bad habits 

are hard to break. So my advice to new birders 

seduced by the facilitated ease gadgets have 

brought into our advocation is, “Don’t.”

It took me long enough. Honestly, I was 

so ticked about the Academy Awards 

fiasco this year where Oppenheimer won 

so many major Oscars. Did it deserve 

them? Well, now I’ve finally seen it and 

studied it to find out. 

This movie is good… very long, but very 

good. It’s as complex as the man it’s about. 

When you create a bomb that’s decided by 

others to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent 

people in one single event, you cannot 

have an uncomplicated story. Let that sink in. 

Two hundred and twenty-six thousand people 

— families, grandparents, children — killed in 

a matter of seconds to days. And we were on 

the good side. 

I was a little jarred by the back-and-forth 

of the story — from black-and-white then to 

color. Where was I? In the 60s? The 50s? It 

wasn’t always easy to tell. The storyline shows 

how Oppenheimer, who created the atomic 

bomb, was tortured by how it was used. 

The subject of the villain in the movie 

(played by Robert Downey, Jr.) was relatively

flat for me. I was disinterested and underwhelmed 

by that particular part of the story. 

But it was a major part of the third act, so I 

guess I was underwhelmed overall. 

The film was beautifully shot with superb 

acting, and it had a compelling story (other 

than the villain). Note: not a gripping or captivating 

or poignant story — but compelling. 

Of course, it was a Hollywood studio, big 

money production. And that’s why it got so 

many awards. It wasn’t some scrappy Netflix 

or outsider Apple TV show. This movie was all 

Hollywood. That doesn’t make it any better. In 

fact, it puts it under more scrutiny. 

When it comes to Christopher Nolan 

films, give me Dunkirk (2017) over Oppenheimer 

any day. Dunkirk won three Oscars, none in 

major categories. It was nominated for many 

of the biggies. Maybe that’s what should’ve 

happened here. So many will be convinced 

that this is his masterpiece. I’m not. Yet 

Hollywood handed it so much gold. Should’ve 

spread that around to other movies. 

But I’m done being a “crybaby.” History 

proves it was all a despicable act to end WWII. 

We were on the good side — and it’s important 

we developed the weapon before the Nazis. 

I’m not foolish. But there was a better way. 

You say, “It was a different time.” That lame 

rationale is overused for so many atrocities 

that have been so devastating — and still devastating 

today. But Oppenheimer wasn’t lame— 

it just didn’t deserve seven Oscars. But I’m 

moving on.

Mother’s Day is May 12 this year. 

It can be a tricky holiday, in part 

because it is designed to honor 

the person who usually makes 

holidays special. Though, as 

Miley Cyrus reminds us, Mom can buy herself 

flowers, shouldn’t have to on Mother’s Day. 

Mother’s Day in America was conceived 

by a woman named Anna Jarvis, who thought 

it should be a quiet day on which people 

would wear white carnations in honor of their 

mothers. Her campaign to make the holiday 

official succeeded, and Congress declared the 

first Mother’s Day in 1914. By 1920, Jarvis disavowed 

the commercialization of the holiday,

Egg Hunt. Unfortunately for my eightyear-old 

nephew, my husband caught him in 

the act and verbally tore into him. My sister 

walked into it and it escalated. She took the 

kids home and we haven’t seen or spoken to 

her since. I want to extend an olive branch, but 

my husband is against it. What should I do? —

Wise answers to perplexing questions 

what happened before he lost his temper. The 

whole thing must have been scary. However, 

everyone — must learn to play nice and not 

bully others. The Answer Lady thinks the 

ball is in your sister’s court. She was probably 

overprotective of her son and embarrassed by 

his behavior once she knew the circumstances. 

Why not let it play out? Tell your husband to 

stay home. He’ll be thrilled. Send a group text 

telling everyone he can’t make it. That might 

take the edge off. Focus on your mother and 

have a nice time.

We are planning to have a family Mother’s 

Day brunch at Hemingway’s. The problem 

is my brother-in-law is never on time. 

Many times, my mother holds up dinner for 

up to an hour hoping he will show. Sometimes 

we’re having dessert when graces us with his 

presence. He is very charming and gets away 

with it. But what to do on Mother’s Day? My 

inclination is to tell her he’s not coming. That 

we can be seated in a timely fashion. When he 

does show up, if he does, it’ll look like a big surprise. 

My brother thinks I’m nuts. What think

Not a bad plan. The Answer Lady is 

impressed. And, if he gets wind of it, he just 

might be on time. Late folk are annoying. The 

flaw in your plan is if your mother gets on the 

phone asking him why he’s not coming and he 

says, “Of course I’ll be there.” Siblings make 

plans, God laughs and then creates mimosas.

• Dry towels and clothing on a clothes line when possible 

• STOP idling your car 

• Turn off lights when not in use/needed 

• Use LED light bulbs and unplug electronics when not in use 

• Grow your flower or vegetable garden with plants that attract bees 

and butterflies, and require less water 

• Tread lightly – explore local nature centers and trails 

• Build responsibly – Support Green Energy!
