Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked

The place: A local favorite, the C-View Inn located across the street 

from Wawa in Cape May. 

The vibe: We went for lunch on Wednesday afternoon last week, 

so it wasn’t packed, and we were able to grab a table right away. The 

bar was pretty full, and a few tables were occupied, but it was a nice

afternoon to pay a visit to the C-View. Jack, Katie, Courtney, Kayla and 

Nicole ventured out to a nice lunch for some change of scenery — we 

needed a brief break from our desk lunches. This also gave us a chance 

to eat as a group and chat about something other than work. Binging 

TV shows seemed to hold our attention for a while and The Sopranos is 

quite the crowd favorite. This along with British TV shows Jack can’t get 

enough of plus Schitt’s Creek which will get anyone laughing, we all left 

with some new comfort TV to binge on the weekends. 

The drinks: It was the middle of the workday so there was not much 

indulging in drinks, but it was hard for Katie and Courtney to pass up a 

frosted beer mug filled with Coors Light. For those unaware, when you 

order any of their drafts, ask your server for a frosted mug rather than a 

regular pint. Who doesn’t want their beer ice-cold? 

The food: What’s a trip to the C-View without some wings? We 

indulged in some boneless bites — Nicole, Courtney and Katie went 

with garlic honey hot sauce and Kayla had teriyaki all served with plenty 

of blue cheese and celery. Jack went for the buffalo chicken breast sandwich 

with lettuce, tomato and onion served with chips. We also had 

some sweet potato fries, curly fries with cheese and pan-seared buffalo 

scallops which were absolutely delicious. They were a first for most of 

us and were cooked perfectly. It was a simple, but delicious meal for all.

It’s February and all across eastern North 

America, nature centers are celebrating 

the beginning of a new season of natural 

history field trips with the annual 

“Dance of the Woodcocks,” outing. 

These forest shorebirds rank among 

our earliest and most flamboyant breeders. 

Spiraling aloft over woodland bordered fields, 

the fist-sized birds with the popsicle like bills 

fill the chill evening sky with the spiraling 

notes of hormonally fueled birds. Some liken 

it to a “twitter,” others to a “cascade notes.” 

And while woodcock, as forest birds, are an 

anomaly among shorebirds, their spirited 

aerial displays are right out of the shorebird 

playbook. By June the skies over Arctic 

regions will be frantic with the sound and sizzle 

of courting shorebirds. But we in the lower 

48 get to see the opening act as male woodcock 

spiral aloft, showing off their genetic 

fitness to females watching from below. 

Females may choose more than one mate 

over the course of the three-month mating 

season and the bondings are brief. Female

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

woodcocks bear the full burden of brooding 

rearing, from nesting to fledging. After mating, 

the male’s job is done. She will deposit 

her one to five eggs among the leaves on the 

forest floor; he’ll keep trying to attract other 

females on successive nights. After 20-22 

days the eggs hatch and chicks leave the nest 

and are tended by the female for about a 

month while they learn the highly specialized 

skill of probing the forest floor for earth-

worms. During this time the female feeds the 

young, unlike most other shorebird young 

whose precocial natures have no more of 

adult birds than protection from predators 

and the elements. 

In Cape May woodcock are common 

breeders and winter residents and while still 

common throughout most of their range the 

population is declining — a loss linked to the 

maturation of young forest growth and to the 

loss of woodland habitat to development. But 

for now, and the next several weeks you can 

witness the Dance of the Woodcock. Warm 

evenings and fields offering an unobstructed 

view of the western sky are best. South Cape 

May and the fields of Higbee Beach are woodcock 

hotspots. Dress warm and bring a flashlight 

for your retreat to your car. 

I note that Cape May Bird Observatory 

has a “Woodcock Dance,” field trip scheduled 

for March 1 led by local birding ace Rom Reed. 

Go online to “Bird Cape May” for this and 

other seasonally calibrated field trips. Bring a 

friend. Birds are meant to be shared.

Let’s talk about the Oscar elephant in 

the room. What’s all this talk about 

Oscar being too “woke” this year? And 

frankly, when did woke become a bad 

word? 

Oscar has some new rules (note: plural… 

rules). They focus on making sure that the 

film industry is inclusive in representation 

of all groups on screen, on set, or somewhere 

(anywhere) in the production or marketing. 

Opponents take one element of the fourpart 

rules and say, “Hollywood is too woke! 

They’re ‘making’ studios be more inclusive by 

forcing them to hire people of color to star in 

their movies.” This is simply not true, so don’t 

listen to these whack jobs. Google “new Oscar 

inclusions rules” to see more. 

The new rules took effect this year, and 

you may see some better representation at 

Oscar because of it. But pseudo-spoiler, if 

you look at the nominees in their totality, you 

may still not. Some whiners say the rules go 

too far (look up the disgraceful interview with 

Richard Dreyfuss). I applaud the Academy for 

taking this step in clearly the right direction, 

and I hope they spread the rule to include all 

the top prize categories, not just Best Picture. 

One movie up for the top prize shines 

as an outstanding example of what’s wrong 

not only with Hollywood but with us. As in 

the big “us.” American Fiction is about a novelist 

and professor played by Jeffrey Wright 

who writes high-brow fiction. Translation: 

his books don’t make much money. He is sick 

of authors who write fiction that plays into 

stereotypes of Black culture. His response is 

to write a book that blatantly plays into all 

those stereotypes. To his surprise (and dismay), 

the book is published and is a huge hit. 

He writes under a pseudonym, because he’s 

sort of embarrassed by the book, and does 

everything to stop his own creation’s success. 

In addition to Best Picture, the film is also 

nominated for Best Lead Actor (Wright), Best 

Supporting Actor (Sterling K. Brown), Best 

Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. 

All brilliantly well deserved. 

I may need to make room on my top 10 

list of favorite movies of all time. Maybe not… 

but this movie has everything I like: it’s about 

writing, it’s got pitch-perfect social commentary, 

and it delivers on laughs (and maneuvers 

among these effortlessly). American Fiction is 

funny. It is sad. It is deeply moving at precise 

moments. It is part comedy, part drama, and 

part farce about how society tries disingenuously 

to be so woke. Who knows? Maybe 

that’s how the word got such a bad rap.

For Cape May lovers, Presidents’ Day is 

a time of celebration because the town 

reawakens. People will debate this as 

the year-round calendar gets busy, but 

debate feels inevitable in February. 

We’ve been stuck inside, so it’s easy to quarrel 

over little things — even the apostrophe. 

The apostrophe is a problematic piece 

of punctuation which likely originated in 

1509, or in 1529 — another debate. Early on, 

it denoted a single omitted vowel, but the 

apostrophe evolved to denote possession. 

Perhaps because Old English used “es” for 

possession, as in, according to the BBC, the 

“kinges book” (or, more properly, the “cynges 

book”), the “’s” became common. According 

to language experts, English writers, including 

Shakespeare and Austen, struggle with the 

apostrophe because it is silent, making plural 

and possessive sound alike. Grammarians 

disagree about its usage — word nerds still 

debate its absence in the possessive “its,” for 

example. So, this month, one could argue that 

we should only be honoring a single president, 

George Washington, making “President’s 

Day” correct, or a day considering all the 

presidents, making “Presidents Day.” 

We shouldn’t quarrel over “Presidents’ 

Day“ at all, because the official name of the 

the federal holiday remains “Washington’s 

Birthday.” The February 22 holiday in honor 

of our first president was established in 1885, 

and it was moved to the third Monday in 

February as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday 

Holiday Act. The image of Abraham Lincoln, 

whose February 12 birthday had been celebrated 

in 24 states, soon appeared with 

Washington in retail ads touting “Presidents’ 

Day” sales, and since the 1980s, it’s widely 

considered a day to honor them all.

I have a new roommate in my townhouse, 

and I really can’t afford it without one. I work 

nights and he works days, so we hardly see each 

other, but we get along when we are together. 

The problem is he gets drunk and stoned every 

night and when I come home and go to grab 

something to eat — the fridge and pantry have 

been raided. When I confronted him, he said 

he has “no control over” what he does when 

he’s “hammered.” Then throws money on the 

coffee table and walks away. He signed a oneyear 

lease and pays on time. One good thing, 

he never brings anybody home. I don’t think 

he’s a very likeable guy when it comes to the 

opposite sex, but that’s his problem. My problem

I’d buy your roomie a small fridge and put 

it in his room. Go to Swain’s and buy a lock and 

fix that baby on the mother load of fridges. You 

could also fix an amount of money that would 

make you happy and hide your food in the vegetable 

bin. They never look there. Trust the 

Answer Lady. She has personal experience.

My husband and I bought a beautiful con- 

dominium in the fall, very close to the ocean. 

We both work very hard and having a summer 

home in Cape May has been a dream of ours 

since we first met. The problem is my in-laws 

are already talking about “popping in” over the 

summer. This is a retreat for us to reenergize. 

Entertaining my in-laws is not of relaxing. 

There will be no upside to this. They will not 

show any gratitude for this free vacay. They 

will not, for example, take us out to dinner, buy 

us a drink or even order a damn pizza. They are 

very assertive, and “Chuck” and I aren’t. How 

do we contain this? — Agitated

Other than turning off the lights and 

hiding in a corner until they leave, your best 

option — since it seems you are both financially 

stable — is to book them rooms at LaMer 

Beachfront Resort or Cape Resorts. They both 

have multiple levels of accommodations. The 

Answer Lady also suggests not including extra 

beds or pull-out sofas. No room at the inn, 

should be your mantra for this “redo” summer. 

Next summer might be a different story.

the Sand: Segregated Beaches in Cape May and Atlantic City” on Jan 15. Hope 

Gaines, Tom Carroll, Chantelle René, David McKenzie and Jody Alessandrine 

ROSIE is a lively year-and-a-half-year-old 

Rottie who loves being with people. She came 

to the shelter when her owner moved and 

couldn’t bring her. Rosie loves to play fetch 

and run around the yard. She’s working on her 

impulse control and has excellent leash skills. 

Rosie would be good in a home with other 

dogs, but no cats. 

REENIE is a great dane/lab mix who is a bit 

shy, but once she’s comfortable, she opens 

right up. Reenie is learning proper manners 

and her leash skills are improving. She is 

house-trained, spayed and ready to join a new 

family. Reenie would make a wonderful companion 

for a family looking for a young and 

energetic dog. 

KYRA is a sweet, enthusiastic dog who came 

to the shelter when her family could no longer 

care for her. She loves to run around the yard 

and is crate trained. Kyra is a sensitive girl 

who appreciates a kind voice and a pat. She 

previously lived with children and another 

dog but would need a slow introduction to 

cats. Kyra would be a great family pet.
