Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: A longtime favorite of visitors and locals, Alfe’s in Wildwood 

located on New Jersey Avenue below Island Bowl. 

The vibe: Alfe’s has been around since 1985 serving up traditional 

Italian dishes, seafood, steaks and more. There are four separate dining 

rooms to enjoy a meal and guests may come dressed casually or 

dressed up — it’s the experience that really gives the feel of a fine dining 

restaurant. All entrees are served with their delicious house salad, 

bread, butter and dipping oil plus intermezzo, which is Alfe’s case is a 

lemon sorbet to cleanse the palate before the main course hits the table. 

Nothing ever feels rushed and the service is always so welcoming and 

knowledgeable. Alfe’s typically offers a long list of specials and Dan and 

Nicole are always so impressed how well they remember each item. 

Sometimes you don’t even need to look at the menu — we barely did 

ourselves this time because we had been dreaming of what we wanted 

up until we sat down at our table. 

The drinks: Alfe’s has an incredible martini menu on the large 

chalkboard near the bar right when you walk in. They range from fruity 

and light to sweet and dessert-like — as well as a few classics. Nicole 

enjoyed her favorite, a lemon-drop martini while Dan went with a Captain 

and Coke. We ordered fro the bar while we waited for our table and 

enjoyed a second with dinner. They were just that good. 

The food: We tried a couple new apps this visit and had clams 

casino and a bowl of escarole soup, after enjoying our salad and some 

bread, which was all delicious. For our mains, Nicole went with gnocchi 

and meatballs while Dan had chicken parmigiana with a side of his 

own gnocchi. Everything was fabulous, but we boxed up our leftovers to 

enjoy the next day... it was just as good the second time. 

The takeaway: Alfe’s has a consistency that you can’t beat. Traditional 

meal, wonderful service and ambiance and delicious drinks to 

bring it all together. If you’re planning an upcoming date night, keep 

Alfe’s in mind, especially if you’re in the mood for pasta.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

There are many bird species that might 

claim to be the harbingers of spring. 

American Robin is the popular favorite 

but in far northern regions the 

return of American Crow antedates 

the robin’s arrival by weeks. In Florida, the 

first returning Purple Martins reach North 

American airspace by early February. But 

for my money, Spring’s iconic herald is the 

flamboyant and widespread Red-winged 

Blackbird. Gathered in large flocks across the 

United States and parts of Southern Canada 

north to Alaska and Nova Scotia — all winter 

the birds have led circumspect lives, foraging 

among the reeds and across open fields, 

creeping like penitents. Then one morning, 

with warm southerly winds pushing billowing 

clouds across the sky, everything changes. 

The male blackbirds who have kept their 

incendiary red epaulets furled all winter are 

suddenly inspired to take some high perch. 

Throwing their heads back, letting their crimson 

epaulets blaze, the birds utter the gurgled 

incantation that picks winter’s lock: “Tur-aling! 

Tur-a-ling!” It’s a glove thrown right into 

the face of winter that asserts loud and clear “I 

live. Wanna make something of it?” 

Where most creatures seek only anonymity. 

On the first day of spring, male Redwinged 

Blackbirds throw caution to the wind 

in the name of moving their genes forward 

and assert themselves. Up and down the 

marsh edge, from every elevated perch, other 

male Red-wingeds hitch themselves aloft and 

mimic the performance of their rival. The 

streaky, sparrow-like females size up the suitors 

from a distance, choosing their champion 

and moving the season forward. 

For males, the breeding season is all 

about attracting as many females as possible 

into your airspace. For females, it’s all about 

getting the pick of the litter — the male whose 

“Tur-a-ling and blazing epaulets are a cut 

above the rest. 

Red-winged Blackbirds rank among our 

most common breeding birds. Finding them 

is no challenge. Finding the finely woven 

grass nests tucked into some grassy hummock 

is another thing. The 2-4 pale bluegreen 

eggs with dark spatterings rank among 

the most beautiful in nature. Egg collecting 

was all the rage among Victorian gentlemen 

and inquisitive young naturalists. Now 

that it’s illegal, the carefully labeled trays of 

eggs are occasionally discovered among the 

unclaimed artifacts of recently deceased students 

of nature who were one-time young 

naturalists with curious hands.

From the French, the word simply 

means “rebirth.” For Beyonce’s newest 

album, this word is used to celebrate 

elements such as overcoming, 

empowerment, and queer culture. The 

word is Renaissance. Her inspirations were her 

Uncle Johnny, the history of dance, and creating 

an outbreak of art following a tragic 

worldwide epidemic. Feel free to compare this 

to “The Renaissance”— as in “the” 14th century 

movement. Out of darkness, light. 

The album came out in Summer 2022 

followed by a worldwide tour from May to 

October in Europe and North America. Some 

of the venues were NRG Stadium in Houston, 

Texas, Beyonce’s hometown, and Lincoln 

Financial Field in Philadelphia. 

Late last year, fans were treated to 

Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce, which showed 

several of the concerts combined into a feature 

length documentary exclusively in theaters.

glimpse into what went into the 

tour, of which it took four years to pull the

movie together. You could see how much she 

cares about everyone who made the concerts 

possible — guest stars, celebrities, stagehands 

and background dancers. 

Things worked differently in Renaissance 

than most concerts. For instance, Beyonce 

was the opening AND the main act. She 

covered songs from her earlier albums like 

“Dangerously in Love 2,” but her current 

album was at the forefront. She even per- 

formed her song “Run the World (Girls).” 

There were also scenes where she paid homage 

to other artists by using song samples in 

her show like Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” 

In the concerts and in the film, you could 

see notable guest stars. She was joined by 

Megan Thee Stallion in Houston performing 

their song “Savage.” In Edinberg, Scotland, 

Les Twins joined her in the remix of her song 

“America Has a Problem.” Her daughter Blue 

Ivy Carter also had the opportunity of a lifetime 

dancing to two songs at the Paris show. 

The performances and costumes were breathtaking, 

and they’re as vibrant on the screen! 

The film is set to be released on DVD this 

month. It’s uncertain where it will stream, but 

Disney+ and Netflix have streamed Beyonce’s 

film projects in the past. No matter how or 

where you see it, you feel the power that 

Beyonce brings to the stage. This concert 

and this movie were powerful reminders that 

creativity and art can rise from difficulties and 

tragedies in our world… like a true renaissance.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, enjoy a laugh for a worthy cause! 

There’s a bit of hyperbole that asserts 

Native Alaskans have hundreds of 

words for “snow.” Linguists put the 

actual number at around 52, which 

isn’t that many, considering English 

has about 40. According to thesaurus.com, 

we have a similar number for “laughter.” We 

chuckle, guffaw, titter, giggle and hoot not just 

because something is funny but also when 

we’re nervous, to diffuse tension; to apologize 

for an error; and, sometimes, to be cruel. 

Scientists disagree on exactly how 

humans learned to laugh, but many think 

it’s an evolutionary asset to social beings. 

Laughter is a trait we share with rats, apes 

and dolphins, and, in my experience, with 

the dogs and cats we invite into our homes. 

Laughing helps us to bond with our fellows. 

According to the late laughter expert Robert 

Provine, people are about 30 percent more 

likely to laugh in a social setting than when 

alone — which makes it likely that all those 

“LOLs” your friends are texting are exaggerations. 

You know this already — you laugh 

more heartily watching a comedy in a theater 

than you do home alone on your couch. That’s 

the theory behind the laugh track, which television 

engineer Charley Douglas invented in 

1950, adding canned laughter to the The Hank 

McCune Show. Years before science caught up, 

Douglas guessed that laughter is contagious. 

Unlike other contagious things, laughter 

is good for us. It can make pain easier to bear, 

boost immunity, and lower blood pressure. It’s 

beneficial in good times, but it’s even better in 

bad times. Wakes and funerals often have as 

many laughs as tears, and even hospitals are 

full of laughter. Our ancestors knew this — as 

the Old Testament notes, “A joyful heart is 

good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up 

the bones.” Even fake laughter helps — consider 

“laughter yoga.” This practice combines 

laughter with breathing techniques and was 

proven to reduce stress hormones in nurses 

during the pandemic. 

On March 2, treat yourself to some 

healthy laughter while helping a good cause. 

The Desatnick Foundation, a non-profit organization 

dedicated to raising “awareness and 

funds for those living with Spinal Cord Injury” 

presents a Mid-Winter Comedy Show with 

Andrew Norelli, Wil Lawler and Paul Green. 

Held at Willow Creek Winery, this event offers 

a chance to “eat, drink, laugh and raise money 

for a worthwhile cause.” Tickets are $40, or 

$90 with dinner, and there are options to purchase
