Where We’re Shopping
Here’s what the EZ team was browsing this week
STOP BY FOR A
POUR AT THE SHORE!
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe
even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining
establishments. Well we’re shifting into the holiday shopping
season and it’s only fitting that this column follows suit.
CAPEMAYBREWERY.COM
We’ll give you the skinny on the clothes we try on, the candles
@CAPEMAYBREWCO | 609.849.9933
we smell, the snacks we sample, who we bumped into and, you know,
the general lay of the land PLUS where to find the best gifts this season.
The place: A Place on Earth which is packed with quirky and beautiful
soaps, lotions and other fun products all geared toward self-care
and relaxation — plus you’ll get a laugh or two. Their flagship Cape May
Uncle Bill’s
location is down the stairwell from Winterwood. They also have their
factory and outlet store at Cape May Airport plus a second store on the
Ocean City Boardwalk.
The products: Canyon Allen and his mother Rose are the masterminds
behind all the marvelous scents you’ll be able to choose from
when shopping. Check out a range of soaps that you’ll buy for the name
and use for the scent! Lemon Poppy Seed, Chocolate Mint, Mint &
Buy a $100 gift card & get a $20 card FREE Rosemary, Kentucky Whiskey, Sex on the Beach and their most popular
Monkey Farts (banana, coconut and lime). A Place on Earth also
or buy $50 & get $10 FREE
offers a selection of these scents in body butters, bath bombs, lotions
and their sugar scrubs. They make them daily with fresh ingredients.
You also have the option to stop by their Sugar Scrub Bar where you can
choose your favorite scent, grab a ladle and start scooping to elevate
your next shower or bath! Speaking of which, one of their soy candles
is another find you don’t want to skip. They’ve got Christmas candles
available for the season and plenty of their Postcards from Cape May
candles in a range of scents. A Place on Earth is also the team behind
Exit Zero’s new candles Bay Breeze, Gull Breath and Lifeguard — all
make for great stocking stuffers. And they didn’t forget that men like to
relax, too! The Well-Kept Man shaving set plus their men’s cologne is
just what your husband or father may want this Christmas.
Mon-Fri 7am-2pm | Sat-Sun 6:30am-2pm
The takeaway: A Place on Earth is open year-round and their flagship
store is open daily 10am to 10pm. Aside from retail, they offer
drop off location
wholesale shopping if you’d like to carry their products in your store,
Toys for Tots & CM Community Food Closet
salon or spa — they have a detailed form to fill out on their website.
There’s so much this local store offers — A Place on Earth should be a
BEACH & PERRY, CAPE MAY
stop on your holiday shopping excursions. Shop small this season!
www.luckybonesgrill.com
This local legend of an eatery serves up their signature
breakfast items, mouth-watering lunches and
generous dinners all in a welcoming and relaxed
environment.
Chef Carl Messick has taken over what was once
Godmother’s and transformed it into a relaxed, finedining
restaurant. Exquisite dishes featuring seasonal
and sustainable ingredients.
A locals’ favorite for a reason. There’s a Key West vibe,
good food, regular entertainment, and the views are
spectacular.
A little slice of paradise on the bay, enjoy dishes
with Caribbean flair, listen to a few jam bands and
watch spectacular sunsets while sipping a cocktail or
domestic draft.
This year brings new ownership to the beachfront
restaurant and bar. Rooftop dining, live music, fresh
local seafood and signature orange crushes — the
fun awaits!
Just steps from the Washington Street Mall, Iccara
Italian Bistro & Seafood brings you the fresh flavors of
Italy in a charming, welcoming atmosphere.
A Jersey Shore classic serving brunch and dinner.
Visit their full bar mixing up specialty Jersey-themed
cocktails, craft beer, and much more. Enjoy indoor
and outdoor dining with an expanded patio.
Offering fresh seafood and a variety of burgers,
sandwiches, salads and apps. Make sure to grab a
stool upstairs overlooking Surfside Pier and enjoy
local craft beer and signature cocktails.
Take-out, fish market, restaurant, raw bar, breakfast,
dinner... The Lobster House has it all. Drinks on the
Schooner American before dinner is a must-do Cape
May experience.
The menu features all regional fare including fish,
vegetables, fruits and herbs from Beach Plum Farm
and other New Jersey farms. They also offer some fun
sweets next door at the Chocolate Shop.
A huge hit and locals’ favorite for a reason. Excellent
food (the thin-crust pizzas are excellent), great bar
vibe and service. Lucky Bones gets it right every time.
Old-fashioned southern cuisine providing ultimate
comfort inside the historic Chalfonte Hotel. Eat inside
or on the veranda — there’s nothing more Southern
than spending the evening in a rocking chair.
Homemade specialties and secret sauces, from classic
pizza (using homemade dough daily) to paninis, garlic
knots and pasta dishes.
The legendary harborfront dive bar reopened with
a smart renovation undertaken by the Laudeman
family. But the character remains, along with those
fried scallops.
Sip on craft beers inside this rustic brewpub while
enjoying delicious and casual fare including their
BBQ smokehouse menu, juicy burgers and specialty
mac-and-cheese dishes. Great outdoor space!
Located at the Inn of Cape May, stop in to enjoy
breakfast, lunch and dinner paired with specialty
cocktails.
A large and very reliable menu. Classic diner food,
oversized portions, and very reasonably priced. A
locals’ favorite for a reason.
super-food lattes, gluten free baked goods and
varieties of toasts and frozen drinks.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Parents and grandparents everywhere
fret about the (presumed)
feckless lives of the young people
in their care. Relax, salvation lies in
your own backyard. You can count
on Nature to give young minds focus and
grounding. All kids need are the tools of interaction,
binoculars and a field guide to birds.
Trust Ma Nature to do the rest.
I remember my parents spending oodles
of money on Gilbert telescopes, Gilbert chemistry
kits and the microscope to boost my
interest. All cool stuff, but my portal to discovery
was the binoculars my father brought
back from “the war” and the cheap 95-cent
bird book with the robins on the cover my
mom picked up at the local drug store.
These two catalytic items, binoculars and
a field guide to the birds turned our suburban
yard into a world of discovery. I was never
bored, and my daily journal is replete with
notes about the arrival and departure dates
of birds. No muss, no fuss, no parental guidance.
Have faith in the natural world to captivate
young minds. Your budding John James
Audubon will look back one day and marvel
at your prescience. Throw in the occasional
trip to Delaware Bay, in May, to see migrating
shorebirds or a pilgrimage to Hawk Mountain
Sanctuary in October, or Garret Mountain
for migrating warblers in May and you’ve set
your young naturalist on a path to wonder and
discovery that will vault a lifetime and may
even lead to a career.
But living in bird-filled Cape May, if your
budding young naturalist explores no farther
than the limits of their yard, they will find
wonders enough. Here, we have a daily turnover
in birds and a National Geographic special
lying between the hedge and the corner
shed. Birds will lead to butterflies and beetles,
then flowers and grasses and stars and all the
other elements of the world around us. Your
backyard is a front seat to the entire universe.
Give young minds the tools to explore it.
Chances are, captivated by their enthusiasm,
you’ll share in the journey. Give young minds
the tools of discovery and get out of the way.
David Attenborough can’t live forever, and
somebody will have to step forward and narrate
those Planet Earth documentaries. Why
not your budding naturalist? Cape May is the
ideal classroom and young minds are eager to
learn. Pretty soon they’ll be hosting a podcast
showcasing their discoveries and co-leading
field trips for Cape May Bird Observatory.
Sign me up. I’ve never lost my love of
learning.
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
When it comes to Oscar buzz, the
chatter seems to start earlier and
earlier — like the holiday season.
And lately, there’s another element
to the whole buzzworthy
discussion. How many studios will take a
back seat to streaming services for awards?
This year seems to be more prominent partnerships
between the two — and the studios
seem to have gotten their bearings on creating
films that could get more noms!
The frontrunner is Oppenheimer
(Universal), according to Variety magazine.
Also, Killers of the Flower Moon is from a collaboration
of Apple and Paramount. Of the
top 10 predictions for Best Picture from the
magazine, six are from big studios or their
indie-looking smaller counterparts. Two are
from actual indie studios, and two are from...
you may have guessed it… Netflix.
Let’s look at one of the Netflix films predicted
to get a nom for best pic. May December
stars Natalie Portman as Elizabeth, and
Julianne Moore playing a controversial figure,
Gracie. These two Oscar winners provide
powerful performances. Gracie had been in
the tabloids 20 years ago when she was in her
30s for having an affair with a boy who was 13.
She had twins with the boy, and the two stayed
together. Charles Melton plays the father of
the twins, now graduating high school.
The Portman character is researching
Gracie. Elizabeth probes everything that led
to the controversy. Stir up trouble much?
Needless to say, there is much that needed to
be stirred. The film is sometimes heavy, and
heady, but Portman delivers in a scene toward
the end that is captivating. If not Best Picture,
she may get an actor nomination.
This film has plenty of emotion and
drama — painfully awkward moments and
scenes that showcase a lot of talent. Melton is
also getting buzz for supporting actor.
There aren’t many more team ups of studio
and streamers, so maybe this is a fad. I
guess that depends on how successful the
projects are. Amazon teamed up with MGM to
make Air, the surprising hit about the creation
of the Michael Jordan sneaker line. It’s not
getting buzz as Best Picture, but in other categories.
Barbie looks like it may get nominated
for the top prize and for Greta Gerwig as Best
Director. She’s been nominated three times,
this could be her year! She’s always been one
of my faves! Stay tuned!
side, to get your body ready for cold-weather
exercise. Things like ankle rotations help to
get your feet ready for snowy, uneven terrain.
Dress in layers and reflective, bright clothing.
Because visibility is worse in winter, avoid the
black or grey workout gear. Cover your ears
and fingers, and choose footwear based on the
weather and your planned path — wet feet will
make you miserable. If it’s raining, a hat or
hood may serve you better than an umbrella in
Winter is just beginning, but that
doesn’t mean you have to hibernate.
Doctors recommend we all
get outside most days, if possible.
Not only is natural light good
for your mood, but exercise helps regulate
your body clock and encourages better sleep.
Go for a walk around Cape May.
Every bit of walking helps. According to
two Harvard studies, 20 minutes of walking a
day may reduce your risk of heart disease by
30 percent. If you’re feeling sluggish, just walk
around your block to see what renovations the
neighbors are undertaking. Consider combining
your walk with errands — walk to the post
office, or to pick up a quart of milk. When the
weather makes beach walking unpleasant,
consider the Cape May County Zoo — the
park is open 7am to dusk, and the zoo itself
10am to 3:30pm, every day but Christmas.
Walking in the winter is different. Even
if you’re fit, you might want to do some warmup
exercises beforehand. Do a little dynamic
stretching inside, and then a little more outthe
winter wind. On bitterly cold days, breathe
through a mask or scarf — cold, dry air can be
irritating, even for people with healthy lungs.
Sunscreen is still important in winter, as
is hydration, so bring a water bottle. Pack binoculars
in your pocket to check out the birds.
Wintering waterfowl are impressively hardy,
and though they are quieter in winter, if you
hear a red-throated loon, you’ll want to look
for it. Or, maybe you want to watch the ferry or
the commercial fishing boats. Bring a few dollars
or a credit card if you’re walking through
town — you may find yourself tempted by
your favorite restaurant or coffee shop. Public
restrooms are open year-round at the Ocean
Street end of the Washington Street Mall and
at Lyle Lane and Decatur Street, and at Cape
May Point State Park — beach restrooms are
closed for the season. If you’re feeling grumpy,
look for a group of enthusiastic tourists and
eavesdrop. As they “ooh” and “aah” over this
beautiful town, remind yourself how lucky
you are to be here.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My two daughters, both in their 30s, have
moved back home for various reasons. They
are very good about helping financially, but
I am still the designated cook. I make dinner
most nights and they are home most nights.
Making dinner for just my husband and I is
one thing, but now, it’s like I went back in time.
I want them to learn how to navigate their way
in a kitchen, other than opening the refrigerator
or getting take-out. The problem is when
they try to cook, I hover over them. Then, they
get fed up and walk away telling me to do it
myself. How can I help them and stop my own
hovering? — Chef Mom
Dear Chef
Designate a night that they make dinner.
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Then you go shopping on the Washington
Street Mall and do not return until dinnertime.
Maybe bring them a “hostess” gift from
Red Oak or Love the Cook. Then you enjoy
whatever it is they have made. Whether you
like it or not. Failure is part of the learning process,
but they can start out with simple things
— spaghetti, steaks on the barbie, simple rice
and veggie dishes. Build their confidence
instead of undermining it and it all be good.
Dear Answer Lady
My wife wants to be a TikTok influencer
and has been posting content using our kids
as the focus, often crying about something.
I didn’t even know this until a friend showed
me. It’s one thing if she wants to be a “star.” It’s
another when she uses our children to do so. I
think staying home with the kids is becoming
too much. Our kids are two and three years
old. What would you do? — Concerned Dad
Dear Concerned
Enroll them in daycare. It’ll be a win-win
for the kids and both of you. You may want to
inform your wife that this borders on child
endangerment. The point of being a parent
is to look out for your kids, not exploit them.
Tell her to use the daily drudges of housework
like mountains of laundry. Tripping over toys.
How to make kids eat veggies. If she wants
to be a star, encourage her to focus on being
a mommy. It sounds like the two of you need
to reconnect. A romantic weekend at La Mer
and dinner at the Pier House might be just the
ticket. And inspiration for a post.
BLAZE is a handsome boy who came to the
shelter when his owner died and is a bit anxious
over the turn his life has taken. He does
require some basic training for leash walking
and certain cue but is very treat motivated. A
home that understands his anxiety and is willing
to work with him will allow him to grow
into a fine companion.
ROCKY AND CHUBBS came to the shelter
recently after their owner suddenly passed
away. These two depend on each other and
must be adopted together. Rocky is an eightyear-old
purebred Jack Russel and Chubbs is a
13-year-old mix Jack Russel. They are in great
health and were very well cared for so a new
loving home will suit them well.
COCO came to the shelter as a stray and
needs a home that will provide a healthy diet
and plenty of exercise. She is a large German
Shepherd who loves to run around the yard
and playing with both humans and other dogs.
Coco will be a wonderful family companion in
a home that will continue her training and give
her continuity.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
MIMOSA was found in a hoarder house left
in very poor care with her kitten Shirley Temple
(right). They love each other and it would
be best if these two were adopted together.
Mimosa will warm up to you well after being
given some love and can happily live with
other cats and children. If interested in bringing
these two home, contact the shelter.
SHIRLEY TEMPLE is a six-month-old
girl who was found in a hoarder house and
brought to the shelter by Animal Control. She
tends to shiver a bit when held, but loves to be
pet. It may take some patience, but Shirley will
warm up to you if given some love and attention.
She’d do well in a home with other cats
and children.
TAYLOR SWIFT is a five-month-old kitten
who was found in a trash can starving to death
before she was brought to the shelter. After
a lot of TLC, she is ready to be centerstage in
her new home. Taylor Swift would be good
in a home with other cats and children. She
is up to date on all vaccinations and spayed.
If interested in this cutie, contact the shelter.
