Parents and grandparents everywhere

I remember my parents spending oodles

interest. All cool stuff, but my portal to discovery 

was the binoculars my father brought 

back from “the war” and the cheap 95-cent 

bird book with the robins on the cover my 

mom picked up at the local drug store. 

These two catalytic items, binoculars and 

a field guide to the birds turned our suburban 

yard into a world of discovery. I was never 

bored, and my daily journal is replete with 

notes about the arrival and departure dates 

of birds. No muss, no fuss, no parental guidance. 

Have faith in the natural world to captivate 

young minds. Your budding John James 

Audubon will look back one day and marvel 

at your prescience. Throw in the occasional 

trip to Delaware Bay, in May, to see migrating 

shorebirds or a pilgrimage to Hawk Mountain 

Sanctuary in October, or Garret Mountain

your young naturalist on a path to wonder and 

discovery that will vault a lifetime and may

lying between the hedge and the corner 

shed. Birds will lead to butterflies and beetles, 

then flowers and grasses and stars and all the

backyard is a front seat to the entire universe.

Chances are, captivated by their enthusiasm,

The Movie Column

When it comes to Oscar buzz, the 

chatter seems to start earlier and 

earlier — like the holiday season. 

And lately, there’s another element 

to the whole buzzworthy 

discussion. How many studios will take a 

back seat to streaming services for awards? 

This year seems to be more prominent partnerships 

between the two — and the studios 

seem to have gotten their bearings on creating 

films that could get more noms! 

The frontrunner is Oppenheimer 

(Universal), according to Variety magazine. 

Also, Killers of the Flower Moon is from a collaboration 

of Apple and Paramount. Of the 

top 10 predictions for Best Picture from the 

magazine, six are from big studios or their 

indie-looking smaller counterparts. Two are 

from actual indie studios, and two are from... 

you may have guessed it… Netflix. 

Let’s look at one of the Netflix films predicted 

to get a nom for best pic. May December 

stars Natalie Portman as Elizabeth, and 

Julianne Moore playing a controversial figure, 

Gracie. These two Oscar winners provide 

powerful performances. Gracie had been in 

the tabloids 20 years ago when she was in her 

30s for having an affair with a boy who was 13. 

She had twins with the boy, and the two stayed 

together. Charles Melton plays the father of 

the twins, now graduating high school. 

The Portman character is researching 

Gracie. Elizabeth probes everything that led 

to the controversy. Stir up trouble much? 

Needless to say, there is much that needed to 

be stirred. The film is sometimes heavy, and 

heady, but Portman delivers in a scene toward 

the end that is captivating. If not Best Picture, 

she may get an actor nomination. 

This film has plenty of emotion and 

drama — painfully awkward moments and 

scenes that showcase a lot of talent. Melton is 

also getting buzz for supporting actor. 

There aren’t many more team ups of studio 

and streamers, so maybe this is a fad. I 

guess that depends on how successful the 

projects are. Amazon teamed up with MGM to 

make Air, the surprising hit about the creation 

of the Michael Jordan sneaker line. It’s not 

getting buzz as Best Picture, but in other categories. 

Barbie looks like it may get nominated 

for the top prize and for Greta Gerwig as Best 

Director. She’s been nominated three times, 

this could be her year! She’s always been one 

of my faves! Stay tuned!

weather and your planned path — wet feet will

Go for a walk around Cape May. 

Every bit of walking helps. According to 

two Harvard studies, 20 minutes of walking a 

day may reduce your risk of heart disease by 

30 percent. If you’re feeling sluggish, just walk 

around your block to see what renovations the 

neighbors are undertaking. Consider combining 

your walk with errands — walk to the post 

office, or to pick up a quart of milk. When the 

weather makes beach walking unpleasant, 

consider the Cape May County Zoo — the 

park is open 7am to dusk, and the zoo itself 

10am to 3:30pm, every day but Christmas. 

Walking in the winter is different. Even 

if you’re fit, you might want to do some warmup 

exercises beforehand. Do a little dynamic 

stretching inside, and then a little more outthe 

winter wind. On bitterly cold days, breathe 

through a mask or scarf — cold, dry air can be 

irritating, even for people with healthy lungs. 

Sunscreen is still important in winter, as 

is hydration, so bring a water bottle. Pack binoculars 

in your pocket to check out the birds. 

Wintering waterfowl are impressively hardy, 

and though they are quieter in winter, if you 

hear a red-throated loon, you’ll want to look 

for it. Or, maybe you want to watch the ferry or 

the commercial fishing boats. Bring a few dollars 

or a credit card if you’re walking through 

town — you may find yourself tempted by 

your favorite restaurant or coffee shop. Public 

restrooms are open year-round at the Ocean 

Street end of the Washington Street Mall and 

at Lyle Lane and Decatur Street, and at Cape 

May Point State Park — beach restrooms are 

closed for the season. If you’re feeling grumpy, 

look for a group of enthusiastic tourists and 

eavesdrop. As they “ooh” and “aah” over this 

beautiful town, remind yourself how lucky 

you are to be here.

I want them to learn how to navigate their way 

in a kitchen, other than opening the refrigerator 

or getting take-out. The problem is when 

they try to cook, I hover over them. Then, they 

get fed up and walk away telling me to do it 

myself. How can I help them and stop my own

— spaghetti, steaks on the barbie, simple rice 

and veggie dishes. Build their confidence 

instead of undermining it and it all be good.

My wife wants to be a TikTok influencer 

and has been posting content using our kids 

as the focus, often crying about something. 

I didn’t even know this until a friend showed 

me. It’s one thing if she wants to be a “star.” It’s 

another when she uses our children to do so. I 

think staying home with the kids is becoming 

too much. Our kids are two and three years 

old. What would you do? — Concerned Dad 

Dear Concerned 

Enroll them in daycare. It’ll be a win-win 

for the kids and both of you. You may want to 

inform your wife that this borders on child 

endangerment. The point of being a parent 

is to look out for your kids, not exploit them. 

Tell her to use the daily drudges of housework 

like mountains of laundry. Tripping over toys. 

How to make kids eat veggies. If she wants 

to be a star, encourage her to focus on being 

a mommy. It sounds like the two of you need 

to reconnect. A romantic weekend at La Mer 

and dinner at the Pier House might be just the 

ticket. And inspiration for a post.

BLAZE is a handsome boy who came to the 

shelter when his owner died and is a bit anxious 

over the turn his life has taken. He does 

require some basic training for leash walking 

and certain cue but is very treat motivated. A 

home that understands his anxiety and is willing 

to work with him will allow him to grow 

into a fine companion. 

ROCKY AND CHUBBS came to the shelter 

recently after their owner suddenly passed 

away. These two depend on each other and 

must be adopted together. Rocky is an eightyear-old 

purebred Jack Russel and Chubbs is a 

13-year-old mix Jack Russel. They are in great 

health and were very well cared for so a new 

loving home will suit them well. 

COCO came to the shelter as a stray and 

needs a home that will provide a healthy diet 

and plenty of exercise. She is a large German 

Shepherd who loves to run around the yard 

and playing with both humans and other dogs. 

Coco will be a wonderful family companion in 

a home that will continue her training and give 

her continuity.
