Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Primal Cape May on Beach Avenue right across the
street from Taco Caballito and next to the Beach Arcade.
The vibe: When you step inside Primal, you’re greeted with a view
into their open kitchen where all the magic happens, plus a case packed
with their steak, including tomahawks, ribeyes and filets. The restaurant
offers an intimate dining experience with its dim lighting and
smaller space. The restaurant is BYOB so bottles of wine sat on nearly
every table we passed while heading to our table — right by the windows,
offering an outstanding ocean view. When booking, you have the
choice of ocean or kitchen seating, so keep that in mind when planning
your evening.
The food: Dan and Nicole were celebrating their anniversary and
we didn’t hold back when ordering. It was also our first time dining at
Primal, so we wanted to try everything. They served us fresh bread to
get the evening started with olive oil and pesto dipping oils. We then
started with the Burrata, which came with prosciutto, crostini, and
balsamic pearls. Then we also had to have the Pork Belly in a Korean
BBQ sauce. Both were delicious and we were then served a complimentary
house salad before we dug into our main course. Dan went for
the Barrel-cut ribeye and Nicole enjoyed the filet — both with the garlic-peppercorn
sauce. Primal’s sides are served A la carte and we shared
creamed spinach and truffle Yukon mashed potatoes... some of the best
mashed potatoes Nicole has ever had. Just when we thought we couldn’t
squeeze in another bite, a complimentary dessert hit the table — a rich
and decadent chocolate mousse and fruit plate. We can’t say no to that.
It was just the right amount of sweetness to close out the night.
The takeaway: Primal is a great spot to celebrate a special occasion
and should be planned ahead of time. The price reflects the quality
of your meal, and it was well worth it. They start taking reservations
exactly nine days in advance at 12am on Resy. Primal sells out quickly
so stay on top of the bookings for your next night out.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
With winter on the wane, humanity
looks to the natural world to
mark the transitioning season
— little milestones of Spring.
German immigrants brought the
groundhogs day tradition to these shores.
There are no groundhogs in Europe, but the
Druids were equal opportunity worshipers.
Any ol’ burrowing animal could be MC of the
“see your shadow” competition. Bears, badgers,
moles — anything that casts a shadow.
Here in the New World, we look to the
skies for signs of spring — or more accurately
the denizens of the skies, birds.
As early as December birds are moving on
from Winter to Spring. Great-horned Owls,
which reside in every major woodlot, begin
courting around the Solstice. Females are
incubating eggs by January. This jump on
the breeding season gives young owls more
months of bountiful hunting before facing the
privations of winter. Their first big challenge.
One sure sign of Spring is the spirited
courtship of Long-tailed Ducks. Arctic breeders,
the rakish ducks winter in the channels
and back bays of the Jersey coast. When
their hormones start cranking in February,
the birds engage in spirited tail chases and
fill the air with their melodious incantation:
“South southerly... south southerly....” Which
was the name the market gunners ascribed
to the plume-tailed birds. The Inuit people of
Arctic regions call the bird the “Agaiachook.”
Another phonetic rendering of the call, but
the Inuit will have to wait until May for the
birds whose arrival is timed to coincide with
the thawing of tundra ponds. Until then Longtailed
Ducks are courting ferociously so that
no time is wasted pairing off in the Arctic.
Birds arrive there already paired, their bonds
sealed, right here on the Jersey Shore. Where
many a pair bond begins. Males follow the
females to their natal areas. Sound familiar?
One of the most histrionic of courtship
displays is demonstrated by the Red-breasted
Merganser. Males crane their necks forward
and raise their neck feathers while dipping
low in the water. When famed watercolor artist
Louis Agssiz Fuertes’s (1874-1927) works
went on tour in the 1990s, his depiction of
courting Red-breasted Merganser was the
image featured on the show’s billboard.
Cape May residents can see the live birds
diving for fish around the Second Avenue
Jetty and the Concrete Ship. At least until
May when these birds, too, head for the
Arctic. Cape May is just where they celebrate
Valentine’s Day.

Welcome back to a new year of
movie columns, and how cliche
is this: “I don’t know where to
begin!” Oscar nominations?
Golden Globes? Emmy?
Who are we kidding? You know I’m going
to start with Oscar. Some favorites have
representation this year. How about yours?
Godzilla Minus One (reviewed last year here)
at least got a visual effects nomination. It’s up
against Mission Impossible 7. Tough one to call.
Damn, the MI7 train scene alone…
And there were snubs. As predicted here
last year, Viola Davis was snubbed despite
outstanding work in Air (about Nike pursuing
Michael Jordan to start his legendary
sneaker line). The entire movie was snubbed.
Not one nomination. Greta Gerwig should’ve
been nominated for Barbie as director. Snub.
The blockbuster got other nominations.

Let’s look at a quirky film from a favorite
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
Alexander Payne that was beautifully done
and nominated for best picture. The Holdovers
is set in a boy’s boarding school in the year
1970. The plot revolves around a grumpy
teacher, played by Paul Giamatti, and a troubled
student, played by newcomer Dominic
Sessa. The student is forced to stay on campus
during the Christmas break, and Giamatti
must watch him. Da’Vine Joy Randolph plays
the school’s cook, who also stays on campus.
After a sluggish start, this movie really
develops into a wonderful character study and
in-depth analysis of the human condition. It
takes on a lot of important topics but in a way
that’s not stodgy or forced. The storytelling is
compelling but tender.
The movie earned five well-deserved
Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
Giamatti is up for Best Actor and Randolph
for Best Supporting Actress. It’s also up for
original screenplay and film editing.
This is a movie that you can really feel. It
certainly puts enough emotion into the narrative.
It’s a movie that does what a movie is
supposed to do — present images and sound
that tells the story without having to beat you
over the head. Brilliant.
So let’s cover some more bases. Golden
Globes were OK... I didn’t watch them. I still
don’t get them! And what about the Weird
Al Yankovic movie getting some Primetime
Emmys? That’s all I got for ‘round the horn.

Many cultures — probably 20
percent of the world’s population
— mark the lunar new year
with a multi-day celebration.
Traditionally, it’s a time to return
to your childhood home for a long visit. You’ll
catch up with cousins, aunts, uncles and
in-laws. You might help prepare for the holiday
by cleaning the house to ward off illness
and preparing lots of food so that the Kitchen
God can have time off to report to the Jade
Emperor. Include dumplings — they resemble
an ancient currency and invite good fortune.
When the holiday begins, young people kneel
before their elders to show respect, and the
elders give red envelopes of cash to the young.
Once an adult — a married adult, in some
cultures — you pass out those red envelopes.
At the end of the celebration, a lantern festival
caps off the festivities.
If you can’t get home, Cape May is a
great place to mark the holiday. When you’re
feeling homesick, a walk along the beach is a
cheery distraction. Think about the legends
associated with the new year, like the story of
the monster Nian, a fierce beast with the head
of a lion and razor-sharp horns. Nian left the
sea every new year and attacked villagers,
destroying homes and stealing livestock. The
terror caused the villagers to pack up and
flee to the mountains. One year, a hungry
stranger arrived as the villagers prepared to
seek safety. In spite of the chaos of the escape,
a woman took pity on the stranger. She fed
him and gave him shelter. In return, the man
— a celestial messenger in disguise — taught
the kind woman that Nian feared bright lights,
firecrackers and the color red. Ever since, people
decorate with red, set off firecrackers, and
stay up late with lights blazing.
If you’re missing your traditional Lunar
New Year celebration, video chatting can take
away some of the sting, especially if your family
likes to set a place at the table for absent
family members. Experts suggest recreating
your traditions — decorate with red, put some
riddles in your lantern, and send electronic
red envelopes to relatives far away. Cut your
hair before the holiday begins — Cape May’s
salons and barber shops are open but call
ahead just to be sure. Pick up two mandarin
oranges and present them to a friend, holding
one in each hand to show respect. Visit the
Lobster House fish market for a whole fish
to steam as a symbol of abundance. Make
some longevity noodles and sticky rice balls to
invite togetherness. Wish someone prosperity
in the new year — “Gong hey fat choy!”

with training. Her leash skills need some
work, but she is progressing. Zelda would
thrive in a home with experience training a
young German Shepard.
CALI is a five-year-old, 44-pound girl who
came to the shelter when her owner was
unable to care for her. She loves to play fetch,
enjoys brisk walks, and has a perpetual smile.
Cali loves people and while she sometimes
jumps for attention, she knows many behavior
cues to calm her energy. She would make a
great family pet!
STITCH is a young Blue Heeler whose owners
could no longer care for him. He is an active
boy who loves to take walks and run around
the yard. His leash skills are good and he is
gradually warming up to the people around
him. Stitch is dog friendly but a slow introduction
would be best. A home with older
children would be best for this loving boy.
