East Lynne Theater Company officially kicked off a $1.2m fundraising campaign for transforming the Allen AME church into the Clemans Theater at Allen AME 

Church. Chris Clemans presented a check to East Lynne president Sue Tischler on behalf of her and late husband Dave Clemans. Mayor Zack Mullock was also in 

attendance — the city, who now own the church (badly damaged by a 2018 fire), recently issued a 25-year lease to the theater company.

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe 

even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining 

establishments. Well we’re shifting into the holiday shopping 

season and it’s only fitting that this column follows suit. 

We’ll give you the skinny on the clothes we try on, the candles 

we smell, the snacks we sample, who we bumped into and, you know, 

the general lay of the land PLUS where to find the best gifts this season. 

The place: Cape May Peanut Butter from the Cape Island Foods 

family. You can shop their variety of products at their main store on 

Carpenter’s Lane, or they have items available at West End Garage on 

West Perry Street. Their production site is located at the Cape May Airport 

where their nut butters are prepared by hand and then delivered to 

the store. Locally made and fresh products every time. 

The other shops: There’s more than just peanut butter offered by 

Cape Islands Foods. The group operates several other stores in town 

including Cape May Olive Oil, The Cheese Shop, Spice Cellar of Cape 

May and Wingnutz Nut Haus. Check out all they have to offer at capeislandfoods.com. 

The products: Cape May Peanut Butter offers so much to enjoy. 

Their staple product is, of course, their nut butters which come in a 

variety of flavors. Pick up a jar of Butterscotch Peanut Butter, Chocolate 

Peanut Butter, Strawberry Peanut Butter and more! They also offer 

them in powdered form. You’ve also got to check out their bakery case 

that’s always packed with cookies and scones. Treat yourself to their 

chocolate-covered pretzels, giant peanut butter cups or a jar of their 

peanut butter hot cocoa. If you’re hungry while shopping, you can’t go 

wrong with one of their homemade peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. 

You can choose grape or strawberry jelly, and they’re even offered on 

banana bread (our favorite). Cape May Peanut Butter Company didn’t 

forget about the pups — they carry dog treats made with their natural 

peanut butter that your pooch will love. 

The takeaway: Cape May Peanut Butter Company is open daily 

from 10am to 6pm. Pick up a few stocking stuffers and a gift set or two 

while there’s still time. Can’t make it in? You can shop online, too! If 

sweets aren’t your thing or your family’s, there’s plenty of alternatives 

at their other stores. Maybe something to enjoy before dinner. You can’t 

go wrong with a charcuterie tray or spreads from The Cheese Shop.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Owls are magical creatures and winter 

is the best time to see them. Our 

resident Great-horned Owl begins 

breeding in December. Males and 

females begin dueting an hour 

before sunset, sometimes flying out to the 

edge of salt marshes, taking strategic perches 

high atop mostly dead trees. Sometimes birds 

fly out over the marsh, perching on duck 

blinds, osprey platforms and tree-mantled 

islands. Jakes Landing in the northern part of 

the county is a popular viewing location, but 

almost any marsh edge will do. Great-horned 

Owl is a common resident — let your ears 

guide you. The lower pitched hoot is the male 

who typically initiates the evening serenade. 

Easter Screech Owl is another common 

resident but are most vocal before dawn and 

they rarely leave forests. However if you feed 

birds in your yard, the small owls may visit 

your feeders at night, drawn to the mice that 

are drawn to the seed beneath your feeders. 

If we get light snow, you can often see 

the imprint of owl wings beneath your feeder 

where a nocturnal interaction occurred. 

Perhaps the best way to find Screech-Owls, is 

to let scolding chickadees lead you to roosting 

birds. On sunny days the owls prop themselves 

in flicker holes and the cavities of trees. 

Chickadee and Blue Jay flocks cannot pass 

up the opportunity to heap abuse upon the 

birds. Gnarled old apple trees seem particularly 

attractive to roosting owls. I’ve spotted 

roosting birds just driving past trees. 

Barred Owls, another resident owl, are 

birds of mature woodlands and strictly nocturnal. 

However a loud noise, like a car alarm 

or noon whistle may incite them to call. 

Snowy Owl? The Holy Grail of winter 

owls. You’ll need lots of luck and a pure heart 

to find one of these Arctic ambassadors. 

Regular in winter south to New Jersey. This 

year is not projected to be a particularly good 

migration year. The barrel shaped birds with 

the yellow cat-like eyes are highly cyclic, their 

south bound abundance tied to Arctic breeding 

success. This year was about average. Yet 

and still, birds have already turned up in New 

England. December and January are prime 

months for Snowy Owls and lightly trafficked 

coastal beaches are the perfect habitat. Stone 

Harbor Point is probably the County’s stronghold, 

but I’ve found birds in Wildwood Crest 

and South Cape May. Easily dismissed as just 

another beached Clorox bottle or bit of plastic. 

Anything remotely white deserves added 

study. Immature owls resemble soot-stained 

snow men.

The Golden Globes released their 

nominees for their crazy categories. 

TV, movies, drama, comedy, musicals, 

miniseries, blockbusters… the noms 

are all over the place. But one thing’s 

for sure: their list gives us a glimpse of what 

the Oscars will look like. The big shows, the 

lesser-known work… the snubs. 

Yeah, yeah. Barbenheimer is a thing… got 

it. I’m excited for Greta Gerwig, director of 

Barbie. The miniseries, All the Light We Cannot 

See, got a nomination. And two on my watch 

queue, American Fiction and Rustin made the 

list. But let’s look at two significant snubs that 

we hope will not carry over to Oscar. The first 

is a legendary, Oscar-winning actress — the 

second is a… well, a giant on the screen that I 

still can’t believe I’m so hyped up about. 

Viola Davis is our former Oscar winner. 

She’s an amazing treasure with many 

Academy nominations and one win. This 

year, she co-starred in the remarkable film, 

Air. The movie beautifully tells the story of 

how one guy at Nike (played by Matt Damon) 

The Movie Column

beat seemingly insurmountable odds to sign 

Michael Jordan to create the multibillion-dollar 

Air Jordan line of basketball sneakers. 

Davis plays Jordan’s mother. It was a supporting 

role for sure, but she was essential to 

the story. Davis stole the show when she was 

supposed to! The Golden Globes gave a Best 

Movie nod to Air, and Damon got a Best Actor 

nomination. Granted these nominations were 

in the “comedy or musical” category — and 

the film was neither. But Davis? Overlooked. 

She was snubbed by Oscar and Golden 

Globes last year for her monumental work in 

the epic movie The Woman King. Will there be a 

repeat this year? Let’s hope Oscar gets it right. 

The other giant is Godzilla Minus One is ae 

cinematic marvel! I’ve never been a big fan of 

the so-called “King of Monsters” — but this 

movie from Japan (with English subtitles) was 

an allegorical masterpiece! 

This Godzilla reimagining proves that 

story always beats towering, nuclear-soaked 

lizards to be king! And its vibe sends you 

back to the original from 1956 with significant 

upgrades! Not naturally drawn to this kind of 

sci fi? Don’t let your lizard-phobia keep you

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learn a little something with lunch! 

This winter, keep your brain from 

hibernating. Learn something at 

Cape May MAC’s “Lunch and Learn” 

series. The lectures offer “informative 

talks on topics of history, culture, science 

and the arts.” Attend in person with your 

lunch to the Cape May Lutheran Church Hall 

at 509 Pittsburgh Avenue at noon. The hall is 

accessible and free parking is available, but no 

food or drink will be for sale — you must pack 

your own. No registration is needed unless 

attending virtually for the ZOOM link. There 

is no charge, but donations are welcome. 

The first lecture is January 3 called “I am 

Still Here” presented by Clan Mother of the 

Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, Xeli Otaesak 

Pilsit Xkw (Many Flowers Pure Spirit Woman, 

also called Teri Hislop). It explores the modern 

people of the Lenape nation in the Northeast. 

Descendants of the humans who dwelled in 

these parts as early as 12,000 years ago, the 

“Lenni Lenape,” or “original people” had a 

thriving population by the year 1200. The area 

called the “Lenapehoking,” or “homelands of 

the Lenape,” included all of New Jersey, and 

parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania and New 

York. The people who lived in Lenapehoking 

were blood-related and shared a language that 

was part of the Algonquin language family. 

Most referred to themselves by the names of 

their smaller communities or villages before 

European contact. The French referred to the 

Natives as “Delaware,” because they encountered 

them near the river they had named 

for the governor of the Virginia province, 

Thomas West, the Baron de la Warr. Swedish 

settlers in New Sweden, now Pennsylvania, 

called them the “Renappi.” In the 19th century, 

the Lenni Lenape were pushed from their 

land with most now living in Oklahoma or 

Ontario, Canada. This lecture teaches that not 

all Native Americans relocated. 

According to the Clan Mother, generations 

of Native Americans living in New 

Jersey retained pieces of their culture in 

secret, preserving traditions and remnants of 

language. Today, people like the Clan Mother 

are working to reclaim this heritage withstories, 

traditional music,classes in the Unami 

dialect of the Lenape language and teaching 

new generations the craft techniques of their 

ancestors, like pine needle basket weaving.

to stay home. My husband feels I am being

name a few. A word to the wise, when thinking 

of New Year’s resolutions – consider learning

My family has a tradition of gathering 

between Christmas and New Year’s. There 

are five adult children, plus spouses, grandchildren 

and parents. My brother is a chef and 

insists on cooking. That’s fine, but he lives in a 

small apartment so I usually host in my larger 

home. He’s also not the tidiest of chefs. Ergo, I 

end up with the clean-up. I am also in charge of 

making the house look like a Hallmark movie. 

It’s too much. He was ill last year, so we went 

to Hemingway’s. I want to repeat that, but he 

feels I am “undermining” his talents as a chef 

and the “gift” he loves to give to the family. 

I just want a break. How do we resolve this

What we have here is a failure to communicate. 

Sit down with your brother and ask him 

to come up with a Plan B. Instead of a big formal 

dinner, have apps and cocktails at a different

can come up with something.

BLAZE is a handsome boy who came to the 

shelter when his owner died and is a bit anxious 

over the turn his life has taken. He does 

require some basic training for leash walking 

and certain cue but is very treat motivated. A 

home that understands his anxiety and is willing 

to work with him will allow him to grow 

into a fine companion. 

ROCKY AND CHUBBS came to the shelter 

recently after their owner suddenly passed 

away. These two depend on each other and 

must be adopted together. Rocky is an eightyear-old 

purebred Jack Russel and Chubbs is a 

13-year-old mix Jack Russel. They are in great 

health and were very well cared for so a new 

loving home will suit them well. 

COCO came to the shelter as a stray and 

needs a home that will provide a healthy diet 

and plenty of exercise. She is a large German 

Shepherd who loves to run around the yard 

and playing with both humans and other dogs. 

Coco will be a wonderful family companion in 

a home that will continue her training and give 

her continuity.

TAYLOR SWIFT is a five-month-old kitten 

who was found in a trash can starving to death 

before she was brought to the shelter. After 

a lot of TLC, she is ready to be centerstage in 

her new home. Taylor Swift would be good 

in a home with other cats and children. She 

is up to date on all vaccinations and spayed.
