It can be a tricky holiday, in part because it is designed to honor the person who usually makes holidays special. Though, as Miley Cyrus reminds us, Mom can buy herself flowers, shouldn’t have to on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day in America was conceived by a woman named Anna Jarvis, who thought it should be a quiet day on which people would wear white carnations in honor of their mothers. Her campaign to make the holiday official succeeded, and Congress declared the first Mother’s Day in 1914. By 1920, Jarvis disavowed the commercialization of the holiday, asserting that it should be about “sentiment, not profit” and railing against florists who raised the price of carnations each May. Jarvis asserted that mothers would prefer handwritten letters to expensive cards and flowers. Jarvis spent the rest of her life trying to repeal Mother’s Day. Unbeknownst to her, when she died at 84, a portion of her final hospital bill was paid by a group of grateful florists. If you’re lucky enough to still have your mother, ask her how she’d like to spend the day, and make it happen. Help the kids if their mother wants a handwritten letter, or to hear a poem or a song. Occupy the kids if she wants time to herself. Spend time with her at Brunch and Bingo Saturday, May 11 at the Inn of Cape May. Tickets are $30. Take her shopping at the Mother’s Day Weekend Crafts & Collectibles Show at the Emlen Physick Estate. If she wants to dine out, consider Mother’s Day brunch or dinner at Hemingway’s, or Sunday Funday at Exit Zero Filling Station. Pier House has brunch specials, and SeaSalt has piano music. Willow Creek Winery offers a buffet brunch on Mother’s Day featuring a carving station with prime rib and baked ham, an omelet station and a seafood station; $69 for adults and $26 for children 4 to 11. Don’t just make the reservation — let mom dress while you plan the kids’ outfits, pack the diaper bag, and get everyone ready. Remember to take lots of pictures that include the mother. If you’ve lost your mother, be kind to yourself on Mother’s Day. They say grief comes in waves, and Mother’s Day can be a wipeout. Whether or not the loss is recent, you’re missing your mommy. Honor your mother by listening to her favorite music, telling stories, or donating to a charity she supported. Plant her favorite flowers or bake her favorite dessert. Watch a movie she loved. Call your annoying siblings. Kiss the grandchildren she treasured. If you need a day curled up in bed, take it.
