Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Poppi’s Brick Oven Pizza in Wildwood, across the street 

from Dogtooth Bar & Grille, one of its two sister restaurants — the other 

being Mudhen Brewing Company. This BYOB spot serves up classic 

Italian dishes, brick oven pizza and delicious salads and sandwiches. 

The vibe: It was a pretty busy Friday night in Wildwood with the 

town and surrounding areas a buzz with preparations for rallies, competitions, 

movie filming and festivals all weekend. The restaurant was 

nearly full inside and out, but we were sat right away at a table just 

inside the dining room with a great view of their open kitchen. Their 

beautiful brick oven was in full view and it’s always fun to see where all 

the magic happens while you’re eating, and we were ready to eat. 

The food: Poppi’s offers roasted garlic in herbs and oil paired with 

fresh bread to start every table. It was incredible and not a crumb was 

left behind. The garlic was sweet and a great change from the typical 

bread and butter you see at most restaurants. We then started with 

Parmesan truffle fries which came out hot and packed with parmesan 

cheese, parsley and black truffle oil — super flavorful. For dinner, 

Dan went with the roast pork Italiano sandwich — herb-roasted pork, 

sharp provolone cheese, broccoli rabe, roasted spicy long hots and 

garlic. Nicole had the chicken pesto panini — grilled chicken, breaded 

eggplant, imported provolone cheese, mayo and homemade pesto in a 

homemade panini. We paired them each with a salad so that we could 

really enjoy our truffle fries and we still managed to save enough room 

to split a Tiramisu for dessert. Like we said, we were ready to eat! 

The takeaway: Poppi’s is open daily from 11am and while they are 

BYOB, you can purchase Hawk Haven wines by the bottle to enjoy with 

your group. If you want to enjoy some food at home, order online for 

pick up! Keep them in mind for your next event, too! Poppi’s can cater 

both on-site and off, just reach out to their events team through their 

website!

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

This time of year, almost every email 

I receive from fellow bird watchers 

contains information about the newest 

Spring arrivals. Since I don’t communicate 

with anyone who is not 

a birder, this means every email I receive 

is a noticeboard of information. If you post 

a bird before your friends/rivals, you win. 

My neighbor Peter Manzleman got House 

Wrens in his yard before ours returned but our 

Orchard Orioles returned before his. Orchard 

Orioles are a brick-colored blackbird that 

breed widely in broken woodland habitat in 

our region. The trees in the community of 

Reed’s Beach are rich with them. 

Speaking of Reed’s Beach, any day now, 

the beaches of Delaware Bay will host hundreds 

of thousands of migrating shorebirds 

all drawn to the bounty of horseshoe crab eggs 

deposited by these ancient hub-cap shaped 

carapace encased sea creatures. Already 

clambering ashore, the pinhead sized, lipid-rich 

eggs enable the energy starved birds 

to refuel for the next leg of their flight to high 

arctic breeding grounds. Still encased in ice, 

the birds must survive on the fat they lay 

down in Delaware Bay until the Arctic sun 

brings forth the insects the birds need to feed 

this year’s crop of young. 

While several shorebird species depend 

upon the crab eggs, the poster child of the 

Spring shorebird concentrations is the cinnamon 

breasted Red Knot or “Robin Snipe” 

as the market gunners once knew the bird. 

But from now until the last week in May, the 

sandy beaches of Delaware Bay will host one 

of the planet’s most celebrated concentrations 

of living things. Millions of breeding 

crabs, and hundreds of thousands of frantic 

shorebirds all conjoined in a frenzy of sex 

and gluttony with the drive to move your 

genes forward driving the whole shooting 

match. It’s the great natural spectacle in our 

backyards — one that draws spectators from 

across the planet. Don’t miss it. By June the 

birds will be gone, filling the Arctic air with 

their frenzied wings and chortling calls. The 

crabs, their procreative drive quelled, they’ll 

retreat into the deep. Regional birders will 

move on to the next event. Colorful breeding 

songbirds in Belleplain State Forest and come 

July marshes that will host ranks of southbound 

shorebirds. 

Quick turnaround. Summer in the Arctic 

is brief and the shorebirds we are seeing now, 

keep a tight schedule. Here today, gone in 

June, back in July. Cape May is a critical steppingstone 

in this planetary dance of life.

Did everybody have a good Mother’s 

Day? I know it can be… let’s say 

ummm… tricky sometimes. But 

hopefully one thing that brings 

families together is a good movie! 

Maybe you all saw something that made it all 

a little better. So what did you watch? 

There are plenty of movies set to come 

out for “the big weekend.” You know what I’m 

talking about, Cape Mayers! Memorial Day 

weekend is going to be busy. And theaters are 

already buzzing with new releases. We’ll get to 

that next week. 

Last month, the TV series Fallout premiered 

on Amazon Prime and their Freevee 

platform as well. Good news because it means 

that anybody can watch the show with commercials 

but free nonetheless. Nice, Amazon! 

As far as adaptations go, this one is top 

notch. The backdrop is a post-apocalyptic 

dystopian Los Angeles, but you wouldn’t recognize 

the place. In the future, everything 

is dusty and vacant from atomic devastation. 

There are underground dwellers living in 

The Movie Column

vaults, defiant land nomads, and ghouls (one 

with no nose…cool effects). 

Our protagonist is an underground vault 

dweller who ventures outside on a quest to 

find her father, who’s been kidnapped. Her 

quest eventually leads to her carrying a human 

head across the bleak landscape to where her 

father is being held captive. 

The popular role play game has been 

around for a quarter century. The idea of 

video game adaptations is not new. A 1993 

Super Mario Brothers film is considered the first 

adaptation, and many say the worst. The franchise 

redeemed itself 30 years later when a 

reimagined film grossed over a billion dollars! 

Investments make sure today’s video 

game movies are much better. I don’t play 

these games, so I rely on the movies. The Last 

of Us series (2022) was outstanding. It’s from 

Max (formerly HBO Max) and it’s still not 

steaming for free — bad Max! Other films are 

Rampage (2018, very cool!) and a bunch of Lara 

Croft: Tomb Raider and Pokémon flicks. 

Is dystopian post-apocalyptic action not 

your thing? Understood. But Fallout plays it 

really well. Listen, Oscar just overly praised 

the movie Oppenheimer — and that sadly true 

story was about two major cities being leveled. 

It’s not hard to see with all of today’s 

conflicts that this could happen again. Scary, 

yes, but that’s what drives a lot of these movies. 

Strangely, it can make for wild adventures 

in mindless entertainment so we might as 

well enjoy.

The Activity Column 

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, get the bikes out for a ride! 

Spring is the season to break out your 

bike — longer days, streets free of 

snow and leaves, and pleasant 

weather make riding a joy. This is 

especially true in Cape May, where a 

bike liberates you from parking woes. Riding 

a bike is also good, low-impact exercise that 

improves your balance and coordination. You 

might want to do some lunges and leg lifts to 

get your body in shape, but you should give 

your bike some TLC before you hit the road. 

Wipe that bike with a fuzz-free rag and 

soapy water as soon as you bring it out of 

storage. As you clean the frame, look for signs 

of wear — serious dents may require professional 

attention. Wipe the chain to remove 

sand and other debris, then lubricate. Check 

the tires — look for worn treads or cracks in 

the sidewalls that indicate a need for replacement. 

Make sure the brakes aren’t rubbing and 

the springs in your saddle are still springy. 

Grasp the handlebars — if your hands come 

away with flecks from the handgrips, consider 

replacing them. Put new batteries in your 

headlamp. Then, take a short test ride to be 

sure you haven’t missed anything. 

Pay attention to the kids’ bikes, too. Adjust 

the seat height for kids who have grown over 

the winter, or for kids who are riding handme-downs. 

Inspect toddler seats, trailers and 

alley-cats to make sure your passengers are 

safe. Don’t rush to put a baby into that bike 

seat — they don’t have the neck strength until 

they are about one year old. When the toddler

your pictures even more adorable.

bike tune up at a local repair shop like Village

I love my wife, but she has a problem with 

the fact that I am a voracious reader. There 

is nothing I like better than to sit down after 

dinner in my favorite chair with a good book 

and read until it’s time to go to bed. I have a 

very stressful job in the medical field, and this 

is how I unwind. Every night, she does something 

to grab my attention — turning up the 

volume on the TV, interrupting me or plunking 

herself on my lap. Before you even say it, yes, 

I do pay attention to my wife. We spend the 

entire weekend doing various activities from 

nature hikes to birding. I just want this time to 

myself. Is that so wrong? — Foiled Reader

Perhaps you could spend some time educating 

your wife regarding the joys of reading 

and we don’t mean in a condescending way. 

Find out what she likes, then pay a visit to Cape 

Atlantic Book Company and Good Scents. 

Picks out some titles she might like. Wrap 

them in a pretty ribbon and present them to 

her. You might also want to add some magazines 

— like Exit Zero — to spur her interest.

My niece moved in with my mother about 

a year ago. She takes care of my mother and is 

pretty good about it. I also fear she has ulterior 

motives, as in ending up inheriting the house, 

which is worth a pretty penny. My mother has 

made some comments alluding to that. I don’t 

think it is fair to cut her own children out of our 

fair share, but when I bring it up with my siblings, 

including my niece’s mother, I am told I 

am paranoid. “Mom would never do that,” 

they say and of course, my sister is particularly 

defensive. Am I wrong? — Concerned 

Dear Concerned 

Of course you’re wrong. Your mother may 

very well leave the house to your niece. Don’t 

you think that is appropriate given she is the 

one — not you or your siblings — taking care 

of her? There is no abuse or undue pressure 

being laid upon your mother. The property is 

your mother’s to do with as she pleases. What 

you might do, if you are so “concerned” is take 

your mother to a nice lunch at Tisha’s and ask 

her about her estate plans and ensure she has 

a will. That should be your concern. You will 

have more problems if she does not have one.

more confidence to take leash walks, but she’s 

progressing wonderfully. She is a gentle and 

sweet girl who would do best in a quiet home 

that lets her get comfortable at her own pace. 

BRUNO is a quiet gentleman who came to the 

shelter when his owner could no longer care 

for him. He’s shy at first but warms up quickly. 

Bruno has good leash skills and looks to his 

human for guidance. He is nervous around 

cats and would need a slow introduction, but 

other dogs are OK. He would do well in a quiet 

home with older children.
