WELCOME TO IRETON! 

Welcome to Ireton! I am proud to be the Mayor and definitely 

proud to call Ireton my hometown. 

We are a town of little over 600 residents, and have over 150 fulltime 

jobs; plus a large farming community. 

All of our rental homes are occupied and when 

a property comes up for sale it is sold almost 

immediately. There are building lots available 

in Sunset Drive addition on the west side of 

Ireton, which have seen several new homes 

built in the past year. 

Ireton businesses keep expanding, with a new 

L & D Electric building on Main Street. Our 

Kent Hoogland 

medical clinic is also in the process of expanding; 

having added another health care provider, 

and extended office hours. Trattotia Buon Gusto Italian 

restaurant has become a well-known place in the surrounding 

area to come and enjoy a great meal, and it fills our Main Street 

parking Tuesday through Saturday. 

A future children’s day care center is also in the planning stage. 

We are excited about the street renovation in our industrial section 

of town, which should be completed by Fall 2023. 

The Ireton Booster Club continues to be very active with many 

activities and promotions throughout the year. An August 

Smoke-Off competition, with Vendor Fair, Car Show and Shine, 

and possible Pickle Ball Tournament. I hope everyone has a 

chance to enjoy the new Pickle Ball Court for fun and exercise. 

They sponsor the Annual Bud Kemper Pee Wee Tournament, 

which has been in existence for over 50 years. The Booster 

Club also has a popular Community Banquet, and Christmas 

promotions 

Our pride and joy is our top notch Ireton Fire Department and 

Rescue Squad. We have 37 volunteers both men and women on 

this team who dedicate their time when an emergency arises. 

Our town is second to none! You’re welcome to come and 

check us out.

Dear Friends, 

Wow! That was quite the winter. 

Did it seem overly long 

to you as it did to me? I am 

trusting that it is now over, and 

we can all begin to enjoy everything 

our 

community offers outdoors. 

It is my hope that everyone 

will take advantage of our great 

parks, the walking trail, swimming 

pool, golf course, summer 

recreation for our youth 

and the new dog park. Another 

option would be to take a 

tour of Calliope Village. I truly 

believe that getting outside and 

enjoying nature is good for us 

both physically and mentally. 

Please take some time to play 

catch with your kids or disk 

golf with your grandchildren. 

Take the time to let your dog 

run and play at the dog park or 

spend the night camping at Big 

Sioux Recreation Park. Get out 

and enjoy! 

Within our community there 

will be many projects going on. 

The new medical 

clinic and expansion of the ER 

and radiology at the hospital, 

the complete repaving 

of Avenue L, 

and the last 

items needed 

to complete 

the electrical 

upgrades, will 

all 

be in the works

What is a Community Foundation? 

A community foundation is composed primarily of 

permanent funds established by many separate donors 

for the long-term benefit of the residents of a defined 

geographic area. 

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF GRANTS 

IN THE HAWARDEN COMMUNITY 

History of Hawarden Community Foundation: 

Charles and Edna Horton had a vision to ensure that charitable 

programs in their community were supported now and in the 

future. In 1994, Charles planted the first seeds of giving through a 

gift from his estate to establish an endowment within the Siouxland 

Community Foundation for the exclusive benefit of the Hawarden 

community. Thus, the Hawarden Community Foundation Endowment 

was established with local seven-member advisory board of community 

leaders. 

Our Mission: 

The Hawarden Community Foundation strives to enhance the quality of 

life, promote unity, and develop community pride now and in the future by 

partnering with the Hawarden community to identify and prioritize 

community needs, attract and distribute funds, support volunteerism, and 

challenge personal involvement and commitment. 

HOW WE HAVE HELPED THE 

HAWARDEN COMMUNITY: 

• $1.2 million in grants throughout the Hawarden community 

• Funded multiple projects of Hawarden Fire and EMS 

•$26,820 grant to support the Hawarden Dog Park 

• $25,000 grant for paving the Sioux County 

Conservation Trail 

• Funded program needs of Wee Care Daycare and 

cement track for kids to ride their toys on 

• $35,000 for lighting along the walking trail in 

Hawarden

community lies long Iowa Highway 10.

To set up weekly garbage pickup call the 

City Offices at (712) 551.2565. Garbage 

collection routes are Mondays, east of 

Central Ave; Tuesdays, Central Ave and 

everything west. Recycling alternates 

weeks: east of Central Ave are served on 

the second and fourth Wednesdays of 

the month; Central Ave and everything 

west happens on the first and third 

Wednesdays. 

EMERGENCY SERVICES: Hawarden 

is served by a dedicated volunteer fire 

department of 31 volunteer firefighters 

and two student fireman. Thirty-nine first 

responders serve on the Hawarden EMS 

team and answer the page when duty 

calls. The community is proud of their 

volunteers and thankful for their service.

Examiner covers news and advertisement 

needs in Ireton. The N’West Iowa 

REVIEW, published weekly by Iowa 

Information Inc. of Sheldon, serves 

Ireton, and all of Lyon, O’ Brien, Osceola, 

and Sioux Counties. 

GOVERNMENT: 

the five-member city council and mayor 

govern the community. City meetings are 

held on the third Monday of each month 

at 6:30 p.m. in the City Offices.

12 volunteers on the Ireton rescue squad, 

which covers the same territory as the fire 

department.

The Hawarden Chamber welcomes you 

to the Hawarden Community! 

Since the founding of the Hawarden 

Chamber of Commerce in 1919, the organization 

has had a visible part in helping 

the community of Hawarden grow and 

prosper. The Hawarden Chamber and 

Economic Development Corporation 

constantly strives to endorse its mission

environment by promoting the community

The Chamber is instrumental in planning 

and organizing yearly events that 

bring our community together, encourage 

visitors to Hawarden and promote a 

high quality of life that we all can enjoy. 

The Summer of 2023 is no exception as 

the Chamber committees set the events’ 

wheel in motion. For those individuals 

who enjoy golfing, the annual Chamber 

golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, 

June 2, with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. 

This event is open to everyone, so please 

plan to join us for a great golf outing. 

July’s heat cannot diminish Hawarden’s 

Crazy Dayz spirit. On Thursday, July 20 

Hawarden is the place to be. From 5-7 

p.m. the entire downtown area will be 

alive with games, entertainment, bouncy 

houses, food, and crazy deals from our 

local merchants. The Hawarden Chamber 

invites everyone downtown to enjoy the 

summer evening and celebrate our favorite 

little, small town. 

As the summer days get shorter and 

before Mother Nature exhibits her fall 

beauty, the Chamber committees are 

busy planning for their biggest event, Big 

Sioux River Labor Day Celebration. A tradition 

since 1957 and originally known as 

the Calf Festival, Big Sioux River Days is a 

weekend not to be missed. The Chamber, 

along with many community organizations, 

hosts events that are sure to delight 

the whole family. A few of the scheduled 

events include color run, Little Miss Big 

Sioux River Princess Pageant, coin hunt, 

outdoor farmers markets and vendor 

fair, petting zoo, pony rides, parade, 

clowns, food booths, and back by popular 

demand is the Hawarden Demolition

CUSTOMIZABLE 

INCENTIVE PROGRAM 

To better meet the 

needs of today’s business 

the City of Hawarden 

provides a customizable 

incentive program to fit 

the needs of the business. 

These incentives may 

include forgivable loans, 

land grants, reduced 

interest loans, tax 

abatements, tax rebates 

and assistance with 

utility and infrastructure 

needs. These incentives are negotiated 

with the company bringing substantial 

investment and/or jobs to the City of 

Hawarden. 

TAX INCREMENT FINANCING (TIF) 

PROGRAM 

TIF is a method to incite business to 

locate or expand operations in an area 

by directing the tax revenues generated 

within the TIF district for investment 

in the district. The City of Hawarden 

may use the property taxes resulting 

from the increase in taxable valuation 

caused by the construction or substantial 

rehabilitation of commercial facilities 

to provide economic development 

incentives within the district. 

URBAN REVITALIZATION AREA PLAN 

The Urban Revitalization Act, Chapter 

404 of the Code of Iowa, is intended to 

encourage development, redevelopment 

and revitalization within a designated 

area of the City of Hawarden by 

authorizing property tax development 

incentives to the private sector. Qualified 

real estate within a designated area may 

be eligible to receive a total or partial 

exemption from property taxes on 

improvements for a specified number 

of years, with the goal of providing our 

community with a long-term increase 

or stabilization in the local tax base by 

encouraging new construction which 

might not otherwise occur. 

FOREIGN TRADE ZONE 

The City of Hawarden is a Foreign 

Trade Zone as of 2019. A foreign trade 

zone allows the following benefits for 

companies locating in our community.

will vary depending upon the type of 

operation involved and authority granted

Siouxland Youth For Christ 

SIOUXLAND YOUTH FOR CHRIST/ 

TEEN CENTER: WHO WE ARE! 

We are an organization with a place 

that has open doors, cares for teenagers 

no matter what demographic or lifestyle 

they come from. It doesn’t matter if you 

are a star on the football team, if you 

can’t even throw a ball, if you have been 

bullied, or if you have been popular and 

voted the homecoming king. Our doors 

and volunteers are ready for you. 

We are Siouxland Youth for Christ. We 

are here to build relationships during 

pivotal moments of students’ lives 

through the YFC 3 Story model. Students 

have a story, which can be connected 

to a leader’s personal story, which in 

turn the leader can connect to the most 

important story of all, Jesus’s story. 

Here at SYFC the Teen Center is open 

on Thursday nights from 330-6 p.m. This 

night gives students a chance to hang 

out with their peers as well as a 

chance for them to hang out with 

adults they can trust and build 

relationships with. 

On the second Thursday of the 

month we have an Art and Craft 

program that gives students a 

chance to express themselves in 

a creative way. We also provide a 

Family Style Meal on the fourth 

Thursday of the month. During 

the Family Meal Time students eat 

together, as well as learn valuable 

skills. Lastly, students have the 

opportunity to learn financial 

management through the YFC computer 

based program called Economis. 

Students earn points for a variety of 

things like good grades, attendance, 

community service, etc and then the 

points are converted into dollars that 

can be spent at the Teen Center at the 

snack bar on food items, toiletries, school 

supplies and YFC merchandise.

Big Sioux Recreation Area is a 270- 

acre park with 90 acres of surface 

water, located on the southwest edge of 

Hawarden. The habitat includes prairie, 

forest and wetlands, and is an excellent 

location for bird watching, including the 

American Bald Eagle. Annual vehicle 

passes are available for $20. 

In addition to bird watching, Big Sioux 

Rec amenities include: boat ramp, 

boating, cabins, campground, fishing, 

handicapped fishing pier, hiking, 

hunting, open air picnic shelter, outdoor 

archery practice range, playground 

equipment, swimming beach and 

watercraft rentals. The walking trail also 

provides a safe place for all to enjoy.

Oak Grove Park/Big Sioux Park is a 

combination of state and county land. 

Oak Grove totals 101 acres of the 433 

combined acres of the park. There are 

several scenic observation points. There 

are two large outcroppings of Sioux 

Quartzite and a mound of slag which is 

the remains of a 100-year-old coal bed. 

The area is popular for bird watching, 

geocaching, fishing, hiking and 

picnicking. In addition, there are shelters, 

cabins, two campgrounds, watercraft 

rentals and an awesome bike trail for 

those who like a trilling ride. 

PRAIRIE WOODS NATURE CENTER 

A must-see attraction at Oak Grove 

State Park, it is worth the trip in itself. 

The Nature Center is home to interactive 

exhibits, environmental educational 

animals and much more.

Calliope Village 

WELCOME TO THE PAST 

The question is often 

asked, “What is Calliope 

(Cal-ee-ope) Village”? Is it a 

museum? Is it a recreation 

of a piece of history? A collection? 

Historic site? 

Yes to all of the above. 

Calliope Village began 

as a vision to preserve 

the roots of Calliope and 

Hawarden history, and has 

since become much, much 

more. As you explore the 

buildings, you will discover 

quickly that not all the 

buildings are 1860s vintage 

or even exact reproductions 

of 1860s building styles. 

Nor are the contents of the 

buildings all from the 19th 

century. Calliope Village, 

its buildings and collections 

are a celebration of our local 

history. 

The Village is located 

on the northwest edge of 

Hawarden where the town 

of Calliope was established in 1861. Calliope 

was the original county seat of Sioux 

County until 1872 when the county seat 

was moved to Orange City, the result of a 

raid on the Court House by 55 men from 

Orange City. In the following years, Calliope 

continued to prosper but was eventually 

annexed into the town of Hawarden. 

What had once been a prospering, vibrant 

village on the banks of the Big Sioux River 

is today just another neighborhood of 

Hawarden. 

The current site of Calliope Village was 

purchased by the City of Hawarden in 

1976. The only building on the site was 

the original Calliope stagecoach depot. 

Most of the remainder of the buildings in 

the Village were either moved to the site or 

constructed on the site. 

Today there are 19 buildings in the 

Village maintained by the Hawarden Historical 

Society. A partial list of buildings 

includes the original Stagecoach Depot, 

replica of the County Courthouse, jail, 

candy store, Veterans Museum, school 

and church. Collections in the buildings 

contain period furnishings and hundreds 

of historical artifacts collected from 

around the community. Be sure to visit 

the Post Office and check out the Sioux 

Theatre Marquee Exhibit. The Marquee 

was restored last year and dates back to 

the 1930’s.

Hawarden History 

For residents of a small town, determining 

the unique feature of one’s community 

can be a difficult task. 

For the people of Hawarden, however, 

the decision is not hard. 

Hawarden’s beginnings date back to 

the town of Calliope being incorporated 

into Sioux County in 1860. Originally the 

county seat for Sioux County, residents of 

neighboring Orange City felt their town 

should have that distinction. The proposal 

was denied by Calliope’s leaders, and 

the next day several dozen armed Orange 

City, Hull and Rock Valley men raided the 

lean-to where the county safe was housed 

and took the entire thing, including the 

county books, money and county seal. 

RAILROAD TOWN 

The railroad is responsible for the rising 

of many Midwestern towns and the case 

was no different for Hawarden. 

Calliope continued growing as a community, 

even more so after the Milwaukee 

Railroad established a station there in 

1878. The Northwestern Railroad was 

wanting to extend its line into the Dakotas, 

and when unable to obtain a government 

land grant in Calliope decided 

to locate a mile south where land was 

available. A new settlement grew there, 

the beginnings to today’s Hawarden. 

There were multiple daily arrivals and 

departures on both the Northwestern and 

Milwaukee lines. 

A great amount of railroading took place 

more than 100 years ago, contributing to 

Hawarden being labeled a railroad town. 

FLOODING 

Sept. 17, 1926 marked the day of the biggest 

flood ever to occur in Hawarden. 

Although the Big Sioux River was nearby, 

it was not the culprit of the flood that 

day. Eleven inches of rain fell in six hours, 

causing Dry Creek to overflow its banks. 

The flood of 1926 was the biggest disaster 

Hawarden had ever experienced. 

Charles M. Fleshman, one of Hawarden’s 

oldest and best-known citizens, died 

while attempting to cross Main Street. 

More than 250 homes were flooded in 

addition to the buildings that sustained 

similar damage. 

At least four homes were swept away. 

Many people had to be evacuated from 

their homes and the city was without 

water and electricity for three days when 

the water main on Kansas Street (now 

Central Avenue) broke. 

The Milwaukee pile bridge over Dry 

Creek was destroyed, as well as the big 

steel bridge over Main Street. 

Property losses in Hawarden topped 

the half-million mark and no one was left 

unmarked from the damage. 

HIGHER EDUCATION 

While West Sioux Schools are an example 

of early cooperation between communities, 

it also should be noted that 

Hawarden residents saw the value of 

higher education. In 1965 a committee of 

three men traveled to the nation’s capital 

to investigate the possibility of establishing 

a two-year college in Hawarden. 

In September of 1967 Sioux Empire College 

opened with six full-time and four 

part-time faculty members, along with 

55 students, but no buildings. Later that 

fall the classroom building and dormitory 

were completed. 

From 1967-1985 the college grew in 

enrollment — more than 1,000 associate 

degrees were awarded to members of 18 

graduating classed — but was plagued by 

financial troubles. 

The college closed on May 16, 1985. 

HAWARDEN CELEBRATIONS 

Big Sioux River Days is a popular event 

for the community, hosted annually on 

Labor Day Weekend. The precursor to 

today’s events has its origins in Hawarden’s 

agricultural sector, the Calf Festival, 

which began in 1952. In addition to the 

calf show and competition, the festival 

included a wide array of events over the 

years — a parade, queen contest, street 

dance, baseball games, soap box derby, 

tug of war, airplane rides and much more. 

The Calf Festival eventually became the 

Fun Festival and by 1986 was christened 

Big Sioux River Days, which continues 

today. 

BRIGHT FUTURE 

Hawarden celebrated its 125th birthday 

in 2012, and looks to continue as a vibrant 

community as the community looks 

ahead. 

FIVE FACTS EVERYONE SHOULD 

KNOW FROM DAN EASTMAN: 

1. Hawarden is named after the Hawarden 

castle in its sister city in Wales. 

2. The city of Hawarden was formed in 

March of 1887 because of the railroad, 

which decided to build south of Calliope 

Village, instead of directly in Calliope. 

3. Hawarden is home to a former 14 year 

NFL pro bowl punter, Brian Hansen. 

4. Schoenemans Lumber is currently 

Hawarden’s oldest business. It’s been 

serving the town since 1901, that is over 

120 years! 

5. Hawarden has hosted RAGBRAI, the 

bicycle ride, three times. We hosted in 

1975, 1985 and 1998.

Ireton History 

WHAT’S IN A NAME? 

The origin of Ireton is a little complex. 

The city’s website notes that a railroad 

water stop was going to be established in 

the Reading and Washington townships 

and it would be called “Ireton” with no 

further explanation for why the name was 

chosen. 

Oddly enough, “History of Ireton 1882- 

1961,” which was published “on the occasion 

of the Ireton Diamond Jubilee,” gives 

conflicting information on the history of 

the name. 

The book’s cover features a picture of 

General Henry Ireton of England with his 

birth and death date — 1610-1651 — listed 

below. 

Other sources say the city was named 

after this British commander, but the 

inside of the book credits a different Henry 

Ireton, giving the 200-plus year gap in 

lifetimes. 

According to the book, around 1877 the 

Close brothers, Wm. and Fred, moved to 

Plymouth County after hearing about the 

rich soils of northwest Iowa. 

Wm. Close was reportedly famous in 

England and was known for his abilities as 

an oarsman on the Cambridge University 

rowing team. 

When word reached England about 

Wm. and his brother’s discovery of fertile 

land in America, “Lord Henry Ireton of 

Cornwall” agreed to support their work if 

a town was named after him, according to 

the book. 

Another Ireton history book gives a different 

but slightly related reason. 

“Ireton A Proud Heritage 1882-1982” does 

agree that the Close brothers were an 

integral part of the community’s 

founding although they were 

not directly involved with the 

day-to-day affairs of Ireton. 

The brothers lived and 

worked out of Le Mars and 

employed the Sears family to 

handle their business in Ireton. 

According to “Ireton A Proud 

Heritage,” Ireton is the only 

American town named after 

General Henry Ireton, the 

English revolutionary of the 

1600s, and it was done because 

the English financial backers 

of the Close brothers were 

admirers of the general even 

200-something years after his 

death.
