This year the festival runs from Sunday August 18th-25th. As the oldest festival of
church music within the Liturgy in the world (first festival in 1956), it features three
choirs of men, women, boys and girls drawn from the UK’s best Cathedral and
Collegiate choirs, four services a day including Compline by candlelight, and is FREE.
The theme this year is the 12th century abbess, mystic, philosopher, feminist and
composer Hildegard of Bingen. Church music from across the centuries will feature
her music, and music from composers who were influenced by her cutting edge
composition and philosophy at the time.
The Rai d’Or, Salisbury‘s oldest pub (since 1292), is now well
known as a very popular Thai restaurant, with the ambience
of an historic pub (open fires etc.) and although it is not much
found by tourists, it is very often full or nearly full throughout
the week with the local people, many of whom have been
coming regularly over the previous 23 years for both the food
and also the real ale, as the Rai d’Or has been voted a Pub of
the Year twice by the local CAMRA group. Being a value, casual
restaurant, bookings are normally made last minute, but do call
during the day, and you will most likely get a table.
