On behalf of the city of Sheldon, I would 

like to welcome you to our wonderful community. 

As a lifelong resident and current mayor, 

it is my privilege to 

be able to share some of 

the things that make this

that a reality by providing

We have learned that by working together 

at many different levels we are able to turn 

dreams into realities and make great things 

happen. 

Here are just a few examples: 

g The Sheldon Join Community Sports 

Complex was a joint effort between the city 

and the Sheldon School District to develop 

softball/baseball fields and green space for 

soccer and football. It received an All-Star 

Community Award from the Iowa League 

of Cities for this cooperative endeavor. 

g Northwest Iowa Community College’s 

Lifelong Learning and Recreation 

Center is available to college students, 

staff, faculty and community members. It 

provides wellness and recreation facilities 

and equipment, as well as space for trainings, 

conventions conferences, and trade 

shows. The city and college worked jointly 

to finance this beautiful facility, and both 

students and citizens have access to yearround 

fitness opportunities. 

g The city and the Sheldon Chamber and 

Development Corporation have worked 

together to provide tax increment financing 

as an incentive for numerous business 

expansions. 

g Crossroads Pavilion is a state-of-the-art 

event center that provides a wide variety of 

events, which include banquets, business 

seminars, concerts, corporate meetings, 

graduations, performances, reunions, 

trade shows, weddings and other social 

and community gatherings. This beautiful 

venue was financed in part through a generous 

Community Attraction & Tourism 

(CAT) grant from the state of Iowa’s Vision 

Iowa Program. 

g Over the course of the summer 

months, Sheldon hosts three major 

celebrations including RiseFest, a family-friendly 

Christian music festival; Village 

Northwest Unlimited’s Independence 

Day celebration complete with a fireworks 

display; and Sheldon Celebration Days, a 

four-day community event that takes place 

over the Labor Day weekend. These events 

bring thousands of people to the community 

and would not be possible without the 

help of hundreds of volunteers working 

countless hours to provide great entertainment 

to those who attend. 

The dictionary defines community as 

“that feeling of fellowship with others that 

comes as a result of sharing common attitudes, 

interests, and goals.” I hope you get 

a sense of community here, whether you 

are visiting, or you have made Sheldon 

your home. 

We care about each other and that has 

been very evident throughout the decades. 

Helen Keller is quoted as saying, “Alone, 

we can do so little; together, we can do so 

much.” 

Sheldon is a community of people who 

are proud of their town and realize it is up 

to each one of us to contribute to its continued 

prosperity. I invite you to join us in 

that endeavor.

ANNUAL EVENTS 

The Sheldon Chamber and Development 

Corporation hosts a variety of events each 

year for the community of Sheldon. 

CHILDREN’S EASTER EGG HUNT 

Over 10,000 eggs are hidden each year in 

the Sheldon City Park the Saturday before 

Easter, for children ages 2-12 years old. 

Several bikes are also given away at this 

event. The Easter Bunny and the Spring 

Duck are present to welcome spring. 

LADIES NIGHT OUT: APRIL 

This event is held on a Thursday evening 

in April, it is a great opportunity for women 

to enjoy an evening to mingle, eat, drink, 

shop and laugh. This event offers a guest 

speaker as well. 

CRAZY DAYS: JULY 

Crazy Days will be held on a Wednesday 

in July. It is a day for businesses/retailers to 

have great deals on the sidewalk or in the 

street. It’s a day full of deals before school 

starts. 

HOT DOG DAY: AUGUST 

This is an appreciation event held in 

August. Members of the Sheldon Chamber 

& Development Corporation compete to 

see who is the “Top Dog.” 

CELEBRATION DAYS: LABOR DAY WEEKEND 

Celebration Days is Sheldon’s town 

celebration and is always held over Labor 

Day weekend. The many activities during 

Celebration Days weekend includes mini 

rod tractor pulls, a classic car cruise, 

community worship service, fly in pancake 

breakfast, farmers market, arts and crafts in 

the park, Sheldon Prairie Queen museum 

and Prairie Arts Historical museum tours, 

classic car show, free entertainment in the 

park, parade, concerts, food booths and 

more. 

DOWNTOWN TRICK OR TREATING: OCTOBER 

Dressed in their costumes of choice, kids 

enjoy trick or treating at downtown businesses. 

CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES: NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 

The year wraps up with various Christmas 

activities including a Christmas 

Parade of Lights, Holly Jolly Hoopla Christmas 

Festival, a free Christmas movie at the 

theater, visits from Santa and more.

COMMUNITY GUIDE LETTER 2024 

On behalf of the City of Sheldon “Where 

Families Come First” it is my pleasure to 

extend a warm welcome to all visitors and 

to residents who enjoy the many things 

that our community has to offer. If you 

are already part of our community, thank 

you. If you are considering relocating your 

home or business to Sheldon — please do. 

You will not be disappointed. 

Sheldon continues to be on the GROW! 

Coming off a year in where the U.S. Census 

reported Sheldon growing by 6.25 percent 

taking our population from 5,188 to 5,512, 

we entered 2023 with a lot of positive 

momentum. This past year, however, Sheldon 

may have set the bar even higher. 

Here are just a few of the highlights: 

Sheldon issued 65 new building permits 

in 2023 with $23,195,773 in new total 

valuation. This is the third largest valuation 

of new permits since 2010, only behind 

2017 where Kent Nutrition underwent 

a $37 million plant expansion and 2022 

which came in at a robust $35 million. 

Also in 2023, 63 new residential units were 

either under construction or well along in 

the planning stage. 

The city set another record for local 

option sales tax revenue in 2023 by collecting 

a total of $1,026,745. This amount is up 

$87,000 from 2022 which at that time, was 

an all-time high. Local option sales tax is a 

1 percent tax imposed on the gross receipts 

from sales in our community. This is proof 

that local commerce continues to be on 

the rise. 

Our Hotel/Motel Tax revenue also set 

a record in 2023 by collecting $166,565 

which was an all-time record. This assures 

us that tourism activity continues to be 

on the rise as we head into 2024 with a 

full year of the new Cobblestone Inn and 

Suites 40-room hotel in operation. 

2023 proved to be another excellent 

year for business development. We are also 

extremely excited to open the one-mile recreational 

trail loop addition around the Sheldon 

Crossing Pond in the spring. This project 

was assisted in funding by two $100,000 

grants from the Wellmark Foundation and 

the Land and Water Conservation Fund. 

The SCDC assisted local developers 

in securing over $1,000,000 in Workforce 

Housing Credits which will help add 

affordable residential housing for our 

community. 

Sheldon is a growing community, and our 

ongoing mission is to promote Sheldon 

by developing an atmosphere where people 

want to come visit, live and conduct 

business. We certainly hope that while 

visiting our community you will have the 

opportunity to experience our mission 

firsthand through our diverse business 

base, available amenities and high quality 

of life. While you are here, we strongly

Aquatic Center with a zero entry pool and 

water slides, and a well-established public 

library. The Prairie Queen Museum and 

Prairie Arts Council Museum both showcase 

the wonderful history of Sheldon. 

We like to have fun in Sheldon and that is 

evident by the many events that we host. 

Sheldon Celebration Days, held during 

Labor Day, weekend continues to be the 

largest chamber event of the year and 

includes activities such as community 

theater, free entertainment in the park, 

kid’s zone, car show, food vendors, and, of 

course, the parade. 

Other events hosted throughout the year 

are Ladies Night Out, Children’s Easter Egg 

Hunt, Halloween activities, Farmers Market, 

and Christmas events.

Rise Ministries and the Independence Day 

Celebration hosted by Village Northwest 

Unlimited on July 3.

Crossroads Pavilion opened its doors in 2017. 

It was built near the Sheldon Crossing housing development 

in an area adjacent to the borrow pit pond. 

Construction began on the $5.3-million city-owned 

facility in June 2016. 

It hosts banquets, business seminars, concerts, 

corporate meetings, graduations, performances, 

reunions, trade shows, weddings and other social and 

community gatherings. The name Crossroads Pavilion 

was formed after the city held a contest to select a title 

for the center.

Sheldon has a variety of indoor and outdoor 

recreational opportunities to keep 

you and your family busy all year round. 

Check out all of these hot spots. 

SHELDON CITY PARK 

Located along Highway 18 in the center 

of the community, the park features two 

softball diamonds, two shelter houses, 

a sand volleyball court and Playground 

Paradise, a large wooden playground 

constructed by scores of community volunteers. 

Playground Paradise has areas 

geared to younger and older children, 

slides of all sizes, a puppet theatre and 

many other aspects. A skate park for skateboarders 

and in-line skaters was completed 

in 2003. 

HILLS PARK 

Tucked away in the northwest corner 

of town along Highway 60, Hills Park is a 

beautiful spot to camp or have a picnic. 

The park is located adjacent to the Floyd 

River and offers views of the countryside. 

Hills Park offers a nine-hole disc golf 

course that winds around the area and 

is a popular destination for fans of the 

sport. For runners, bikers and walkers, 

the Sheldon Recreational Trail begins at 

Hills Park and winds around the countryside, 

along rows of trees and fields. Relax 

on a park bench located less than a mile 

from the trail head and see a great view of 

the Sheldon countryside. 

For more fun, bring the kids to a picnic 

at Hills Park. Picnic shelter, tables and 

grills are available for a fun afternoon 

outside in the spring, summer or fall. Kids 

can enjoy the playground to swing, slide 

and climb. 

There are campsites available for RVs, 

which are each equipped with electric 

hookups and water. Showers and RV 

dump sites are also available at Hills Park. 

Aside from the amenities, Hills Park 

offers a bit of Sheldon history, too: 

According to folklore, in the early 1900s, 

an elephant from the circus visiting town 

died and was buried in the park. 

Aside from the amenities and history, 

Hills Park showcases some of Sheldon’s 

most beautiful scenery. The park is 

known for its rolling hills and large trees, 

which make the park a perfect place to 

relax on sunny, warm days. 

THORMAN PARK 

Located between 15th and 16th avenues 

on the southern edge of Sheldon, the park 

includes a shelter and playground equipment. 

SUNRISE PARK 

Located at the north end of 18th Street 

on the northeast edge of Sheldon, the park 

includes an area for picnicking and two 

sand volleyball courts. 

SCHEMPER PARK 

Located along 25th Avenue in the 

Schemper Addition housing subdivision, 

the park features a basketball hoop and 

modern children’s playground equipment. 

It is located just two blocks south of the 

Sheldon Recreational Trail. 

SKATE PARK 

Located at the southwest corner of Highway 

18 and Sixth Avenue in Sheldon City 

Park, the park is the perfect place for skateboarding 

and in-line skating enthusiasts to 

gather. The equipment available includes 

a halfpipe, several quarter pipes and other 

obstacles. 

TENNIS COURTS 

Located south of Sheldon High School, 

outdoor asphalt tennis courts and a 

pickle ball court are open for public use.

RECREATIONAL TRAIL 

The ever-evolving Sheldon Recreational 

Trail now circles about two-thirds of the 

community. Interesting features along the 

5.6-mile paved pathway include the Sheldon 

School District and Village Northwest 

Unlimited campuses, Hills Park recreation 

area where a trail head archway is located, 

a corridor of trees and a wooded area, a rest 

area near the Floyd River, a native prairie 

reconstruction area near Northwest Iowa 

Community College and a stretch running 

along the river.

Baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball 

and soccer leagues are available for area 

youth and adults through the Sheldon 

Parks and Recreation Department. For

Sheldon Golf and Country Club, a semiprivate

The $2.8-million outdoor pool complex features 

an 85-foot curly slide and a speed slide,

spray features. The aquatic center also features 

a diving well with two diving boards, a 

fan-shaped, zero-entry area, a 1,700-squarefoot 

bath house and a concession stand. 

The aquatic center is open seven days a 

week during the summer months. Memberships

belt buckles a break. 

Live Healthy Northwest Iowa, 

a 10-week health challenge, 

started in 2006 to get people 

motivated to lose weight and 

get fit. 

Participants form teams to 

compete in either the weightloss 

division, activity minutes 

division or both. 

Weight-loss division team 

winners are determined by 

total percentage weight loss of 

the entire team. Activity minutes 

team winners are determined 

based on the average 

number of minutes exercised 

by members of each team. 

However, activity minutes 

cannot include time spent in a

morning, he said even sma l leaders can 

make a big di ference by being themselves. 

The mi dle sch ol’s new Lighthouse club, a 

leadership group for students in fifth through 

eighth grade, heard F enstra share what it 

takes to be a “servant leader” whether in 

Congre s or a cla sr om. 

“That’s what we always have to think 

about in leadership. It’s no that you demand 

that, ‘You’ve go to fo low me.’ No, no, no, it’s 

the o posite. Of, ‘I’m going to try to help that 

person, I want you to su c ed. I want you 

to excel. A l of you. And how can I do that?

THUNDER FRIDAYS

NATIONAL GUARD 

The Iowa Army National Guard’s 2168th 

Transportation Co. is a line-haul transportation 

unit that moves general equipment and 

supplies as assigned. The company has two 

detachments. Detachment 1 is located in Sioux 

City. Detachment 2 is located in Fort Dodge. 

The Sheldon unit supports other Iowa 

National Guard units by transporting equipment 

and supplies to training sites. The unit 

has performed missions all over the world, 

including California, Washington state, Louisiana, 

Maine, Wyoming, Nevada and Washington, 

D.C., as well as Iraq and Kuwait. The unit 

has year-round training, which allows members 

who have seasonal jobs to arrange their 

training accordingly. 

The Sheldon Armory has a long and storied 

history of service: 

g The Guard was located in Hull 1902-11. 

g Company E of the 2nd Iowa Infantry was 

established in Sheldon in 1911. 

g Company E fought at the Pancho Villa 

Mexican Border in 1917. That same year, it 

mobilized for World War I and served until 

November 1918. 

g Company E was redesignated in 1920 

as Company I of the 133rd Infantry, which 

served in World War II 1941-45. 

g The Sheldon unit was reorganized as 

Company B 2nd Mechanized Battalion of 

the 133rd Infantry in 1968. That same year, 

the 2nd Battalion mobilized for the Vietnam 

War. 

g Company B was reorganized as an element 

of the 34th Infantry Division in 1991. 

g The unit was once again reorganized in 

1996 as Detachment 1, Company C, of the 

113th Armored Calvary. 

g Reorganization again occurred Jan. 1, 

1997, as Detachment 1 of the 1133rd Transportation 

Co. of Mason City. 

g The 2168th Transportation Co., a new unit 

of the Iowa Army National Guard, began 

in Sheldon, replacing Detachment 1 of the 

1133rd. 

g In 2003, the 2168th mobilized a platoon to 

Fort Benning, GA, in support of Operation 

Enduring Freedom. 

g The 2168th was mobilized for Operation 

Iraqi Freedom in August 2004, performing 

more than 300 mission to many key locations 

all over Kuwait and Iraq. The soldiers 

returned home in October 2005. 

g In May 2008, the unit sent several soldiers 

to assist with the Parkersburg tornado tragedy. 

Then they worked out of Des Moines and 

Burlington to help with flooding in June and 

spent time in Louisiana helping after Hurricane 

Gustav in September. 

g In 2010, Sheldon unit members departed 

on staggered mobilization dates July 30-Aug. 

9 for Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, MS, 

for additional training. They then left for 

Afghanistan as a part of 2,800 soldiers in the 

National Guard’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 

34th Infantry Division based in Boone, making 

up the single largest deployment of Iowa 

National Guard troops since World War II. All 

of the troops returned home safely in 2011.

HIGHWAY 60 DEVELOPMENT 

The community of Sheldon was at a crossroads 

when the Iowa Department of Transportation 

announced it would bypass the 

city to build the new Highway 60 expressway. 

The community had to make a decision 

— embrace the bypass or fear that it would 

lead to the eventual disappearance of 

downtown Sheldon. 

With vision and foresight, the community 

chose to look at the bypass as opportunity. 

That attitude allowed an atmosphere of 

opportunity to settle in and the city has 

grown. 

The Runger Addition was started first 

north of Highway 18 and west of Highway 

60. The development area, consisting of 

mostly commercial businesses such as Pizza 

Ranch, Neal Chase Lumber and a strip 

mall Sheldon Crossroads Court that contains 

Los Tulipanes Mexican Restaurant, 

North Star Community Credit Union, Sheldon 

Nails & Spa, Professional Ag Marketing 

and Edward Jones — Dan Drescher’s office. 

The city then began developing Sheldon 

Crossing, a commercial area located south 

of Highway 18 and west of Highway 60. 

Sheldon Plaza/McDonald’s, Holiday Inn 

Express, Taco John’s and Crossroads Pavilion 

Event Center have located there so far. 

The east side of the Highway 60 expressway 

has blossomed over the years and is 

proving to be a wise investment by the 

City of Sheldon and Sheldon Chamber 

and Development Corporation to acquire 

ground around the crossroads of Highway 

18 and Highway 60. 

Crossroads Industrial Park, a heavy industrial 

area opened in 2013 on the east side 

of the Highway 60 expressway and south 

of Highway 18. The approximately 70-acre 

development site welcomed Ziegler Cat, 

based in Minneapolis, as the first occupant. 

White Wolf Web, an offset commercial 

printing plant, rebuilt in its new location 

after a fire destroyed the company’s original 

structure in June 2013. Additionally, Fred’s 

Plumbing & Heating built a location in 

Sheldon in 2016. 

In 2017, Bomgaars opened a new 

32,000-square-foot facility just to the east 

of Ziegler Cat. It also marked the opening of 

The Crossroads Pavilion Event Center and 

North Star Community Credit Union. 

2018 saw a number of starts that will 

come to fruition in the future. They 

announced plans for Coop Gas & Oil to 

build a Travel Plaza in Sheldon Crossing. 

The Travel Plaza opened in November 

2020 and the truck shop also holds a Godfather’s 

Pizza Express. In March 2021, a 

Jimmy John’s opened in the Travel Plaza. 

Infrastructure improvements are underway 

in Sheldon Crossroads North Business 

Park as the road is being extended 

to open up acres of prime commercial 

ground located at the intersection of Highway 

18 and 60. 

Chinese Chef opened its drive-thru near 

Sheldon Crossing with more buildings 

planned to go around the restaurant. 

Impressions Salon also relocated to start 

2023 across from Sheldon Crossing. 

A 1-mile loop around the pond behind the 

Pavilion was completed and accessible to 

the community in 2023. It connect with the 

current Sheldon Recreational Trail 

Near Sheldon Crossing they completed 

Cobblestone Inn & Suites Hotel which has 

40 rooms. This is next to Crossroads Pavilion 

and Holiday Inn Express.

ECONOMY 

Sheldon received its census report in 

2021 that showed a 6.25 percent growth 

in population bringing it from 5,188 to 

5,512. This is the largest population in the 

history of Sheldon according to the U.S. 

census data. 

Sheldon issued 65 new building permits 

in 2023 with $23,195,773 in new total valuation. 

This is the third largest valuation of 

new permits since 2010, only behind 2017 

where Kent Nutrition underwent a $37 

million plant expansion and 2022 which 

came in at a robust $35 million. 

The city set another record for local 

option sales tax revenue in 2023 by collecting 

a total of $1,026,745. This amount is 

up $87,000 from 2022 which at that time, 

was an all-time high. Local option sales 

tax is a 1 percent tax imposed on the gross 

receipts from sales in our community. This 

is proof that local commerce continues to 

be on the rise. 

Our Hotel/Motel Tax revenue also set 

a record in 2023 by collecting $166,565 

which was an all-time record. This assures 

us that tourism activity continues to be 

on the rise as we head into 2024 with a 

full year of the new Cobblestone Inn and 

Suites 40-room hotel in operation. 

2023 proved to be another excellent year 

for business development. We are also 

extremely excited to open the one-mile 

recreational trail loop addition around 

the Sheldon Crossing Pond in the spring. 

This project was assisted in funding by two 

$100,000 grants from the Wellmark Foundation 

and the Land & Water Conservation 

Fund. 

SCDC assisted local developers in 

securing over $1 million in Workforce 

H o u s i n g 

Credits which will help add affordable 

residential housing for our community. 

Ample employment opportunities also 

exist among Sheldon’s major employers.

HISTORY 

SOUNDS OF THE PAST 

Off in the distance, you can hear a shrill 

whistle of a train as it announces its arrival 

in Sheldon. 

That same sound was the one that 

brought businesses and people to a place 

settlers came to call home. 

During the past 130 years, Sheldon has 

been home to many generations that 

have played a part in the city’s growth 

and development. Yet, anyone who visits 

Sheldon today may find it hard to believe 

the community once was occupied solely 

by large herds of elk, buffalo and deer. 

Throughout most of the 1880s, the land 

on which the community stands was 

prairie. Actually, much of O’Brien County 

was unsettled because it was sitting on 

a land zone established by the federal 

government. The zone separated Sioux 

Indians to the west and Sac and Fox Indians 

to the east. Because it was often used as a 

battleground and the government troops 

who could help were occupied with the 

Civil War, most settlers made their homes 

on more peaceful land. 

With the coming of surveyors, the land 

started to look more attractive, especially 

as a crossing for the railroad connecting 

Omaha to the Twin Cities. 

As the tracks neared O’Brien County 

in 1871, surveyors platted the city to be 

named after Israel Sheldon, a prominent 

businessman, adventurer and stockholder 

in the railroad. 

BUSTLING PRAIRIE TOWN 

Not until July 3, 1872, was the prairie 

replaced by buildings and houses. And 

with construction half finished, settlers 

stopped to celebrate Independence Day 

on a patch of grass called City Park. 

That community spirit guided the new 

settlement to become the largest town in 

O’Brien County. After just six months, The 

Sheldon Mail newspaper was reporting 

the history-making events of the town. 

And within the next 10 years, a saloon, 

lumberyard and hardware store were 

serving the people of Sheldon. 

Yet, the business that first put Sheldon 

on the map was a giant mill that ground 

grain into feed and flour, which then was 

shipped throughout the prairie nation. 

The Prairie Queen Mill was a drawing 

card for Sheldon, as the owners built an 

elevator and 18 cottages for the employees. 

The mill’s influence was most notable in 

the monetary value it brought to Sheldon, 

bringing in $600,000 within its first year. 

Because of the way the mill fueled the 

growth of the town, Sheldon acquired the 

name Prairie Queen City. Sheldon still 

notes its roots with organizations like the 

Prairie Queen Kiwanis, Sheldon Prairie 

Museum and Prairie Arts Council. 

DESTROYED BY FIRE 

In the midst of the city’s growth, Sheldon 

faced its first major setback in July 1888 

when a blaze started in a downtown 

loft and traveled through the business 

district. Because the wooden structures 

were built close together, the fire spread 

quickly, wiping out most of the downtown 

businesses. 

The community did not dwell on the 

tragedy long. Rather, residents made an 

opportunity out of the circumstances 

by rebuilding downtown into a popular 

shopping area, lined with impressive brick 

buildings. 

Today, it is easy to see how influential 

the events of Sheldon’s history have been 

on the city. The downtown continues to 

offer a variety of services still housed in 

the historic brick buildings. Sheldon also 

boasts a variety of restaurants, cultural 

activities, entertainment and recreational 

opportunities. 

The influence of agriculture still is quite 

evident as well, particularly in the storage 

elevators of Ag Partners that can be spotted 

several miles from Sheldon and the AGP 

facility that rises high above the trees. 

STILL GOING STRONG 

As in the past, Sheldon schools continue 

to be an important part of the community’s 

future. The schools include the public 

facilities of the Sheldon Community School 

District. Those are complemented by two 

private schools, Sheldon Christian School 

and St. Patrick’s Catholic School. 

Northwest Iowa Community College also 

contributes to the community, drawing 

students from around the region, many who 

later become residents of Sheldon. 

Village Northwest Unlimited employs 

many Sheldon residents. The Village is a 

well-respected facility that serves hundreds 

of adults with disabilities. Through the 

efforts of the Village, Sheldon also became 

known as The Marigold City. The Village 

started the community wide project to plant 

thousands of marigolds along Sheldon’s 

highways each year for 17 years, ending in 

2007. 

In addition to the moniker of “The 

Marigold City,” Sheldon has used the 

slogans of “Prairie Queen City” and 

“Sheldon: A Really Nice Place.” 

In 2007, a Sheldon Marketing Committee 

was formed with the purpose of establishing 

an identity for Sheldon. The new brand 

is “Sheldon: Where Families Come First,” 

uniting the community and values of the 

city. 

Yet, all of the sights and sounds that have 

developed in Sheldon, the one sound that 

continues to tell the story of the city’s history 

is the daily train whistles, announcing their 

arrival to Sheldon.

Village Northwest Unlimited 

has served the needs of adults 

with disabilities since 1975, 

which includes residential, 

program and therapeutic 

services. VNU is a private, nonprofit 

organization governed 

by a Board of Directors. VNU’s 

mission is to provide purpose, 

privacy and dignity for all 

people. Their team of over 200 

professionally trained staff is 

dedicated to serve each person’s 

needs spiritually, socially, 

physically and intellectually. 

Each day, individuals may 

participate in physical therapy, 

occupational therapy, communications, 

music therapy, exercise 

and sports development, 

recreation, life skills and social 

activities. Community involvement 

is another important 

part of the VNU way of life, 

with people involved in activities 

such as shopping, social 

and sporting events, volunteering 

and entertainment in 

Sheldon and the surrounding 

communities. The spiritual 

well-being of each person is 

promoted and attendance at 

the church of their choice or at 

our campus church service is 

encouraged. 

The Village has partnerships 

with over 40 local employers 

for either supported community 

employment or competitive 

employment. With more 

than 45 individuals working 

in competitive employment 

placements and more than 

25 individuals working in 

supportive employment, the 

Village is meeting its goal of 

providing the dignity of meaningful 

work for those who

This annual public celebration has

Village grounds. 

Benefit Golf Tournament: July 15 

This event is held at Landsmeer Golf Club 

in Orange City. The four-person scramble 

format will include lunch and a 12:15 

p.m. shotgun start. Dinner and awards 

will follow the 18-hole tournament. All 

participants will have a chance to win 

great prizes. Spots are limited. Register

Christmas Lights at the Village: 

Celebrate the holiday season from 

Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, as 

Village Circle features several beautiful
