U.S. COAST GUARD INFORMATION AUXILIARY MUSIC IN THE AIR: THE AUXILIARY MUSIC PROGRAM Musical notes float in the air, unseen as the wind, but when you hear the melodic notes, they can trigger heartfelt emotions. Music has been called the universal language, but it can also enhance awareness, pride, and communication across the Auxiliary culture and the public. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Music Program has an important mission: to augment the Coast Guard, enhance the Coast Guard Auxiliary purpose and message, heighten visibility, and give the general audience listening pleasure. There are Coast Guard Auxiliary bands and vocalists from Coast to Coast. To explore the rich history and evolution of the Auxiliary Music Program and how an Auxiliarist musician can become involved, it begins with several decades of past commitment and tradition. The history of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Music Program extends, at least, to the formal formation of the Service in 1939, back to the earliest days of brave crews daring By Joy Burnette, National Branch Assistant Publications Support (A-DIR) life-saving ocean rescues. Auxiliary archives housed in the Special Collections of the East Carolina University Library document some early, handpenned musical scores, articles, photos, and references to past performances. Many Coast Guard songs have been written and played throughout the years, with the earliest written in 1943. But there is one Coast Guard song that strikes near and dear to the hearts of all who serve and volunteer: the official Coast Guard march, “Semper Paratus.” Most Auxiliarists have heard “Semper Paratus,” but most have never heard “Fly Your Ensign,” the earliest of the official Coast Guard Auxiliary marches, or the “United States Coast Guard Auxiliary” anthem. The original Auxiliary march was written by Captain Joseph J. Drexler, Division 6, 3rd District, sometime during the 1950’s, and there have been various arrangements and lyric versions played throughout the years. In 1980, a second march, “East Coast to the West Coast,” was created by Jim MacDonald. By 1991, Sig Heller and Roy Kaiser wrote another Coast Guard Auxiliary march, and Denise Osso wrote an undated Auxiliary anthem. Then, time rushed forward. In 2013, Auxiliary leadership identified ways to enhance already robust programs, and develop new programs, to meet the evolving needs of the Auxiliary. The enrichment of the Auxiliary Music Program is just one slice of the larger, overall expansion. The Auxiliary music services have been available for some time, and the current growth builds on past and present leadership that guides and advances the program mission even further. The music program is open to all qualified auxiliary vocal performers and members who play a traditional concert instrument. Serving in the Coast Guard Auxiliary music program is not only an outward presentation of our Service but can also lead to the individual musician’s enjoyment and all members a little bit of pride. HOW TO GET INVOLVED Interested musicians should be aware of the qualification demonstrations and avenues of participation.
