Safety/Gun

*Buying Your First Handgun

Instructor: Larry Arnold

This class won't tell you what handgun you should

buy; it's about helping you make up your own mind,

based on your needs. It covers four secrets that

nobody remembers to tell new shooters. The

interactive classroom session will help you identify

what type of handguns are available, learn how to

shop for a handgun, and find training on how to fire

it. In the hands-on session at the shooting range,

you'll get to shoot several different types of handguns

and learn how to handle them safely. Shooting and

shopping, how can you pass that up? During the

two-hour range session, students may bring their own

handgun with their own ammunition, which must

pass inspection before being fired. You are

encouraged to bring your own ear and eye protection.

justified to keep you out of jail, and how to interact

with law enforcement. This is the Department of

Public Safety certified course required to qualify for a

new TLC. The one-session, 6-hour class will be taught

How Safe is Drinking Water?

Instructor: Mike McGinnis, Ph.D.

All life depends upon water. One of its most

important properties is its ability to dissolve a wide

range of molecules and compounds. For living cells,

this allows the chemical reactions necessary for life to

occur. We assume that when we drink fresh water it

will not harm us unless we drink too much of it.

Water’s ability to dissolve minerals, toxic compunds,

and transmit microorganisms is important to

understand. Water quality in local aquifers, river, as

well as, the challenges of medical drugs,

micro-plastics, microorganisms like E. Coli, chemical

compounds, and radioactive substances in drinking

water will be discussed.

situations, but may be uncertain about how to do that.

We’ll start with a few very basic skills, but mostly

we will be observing our puppies as they meet new

friends, learn about body handling for grooming

and veterinary visits, and investigate and explore

new thing - objects, sounds and smells - in a safe

environment. For puppies 3 to 5 months of age only.

Must have 2nd set of core vaccinations 1 week before

Artificial Intelligence and

our Future

Instructor: Mike McGinnis, Ph.D.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is challenging our culture

in both positive and negative manners. Artificial

intelligence deals with the theory and development

of machines and software that will perform tasks

that historically required human intelligence. These

may include the capacity for abstract thought, logic,

understanding, self-awareness, learning, emotional

knowledge, reasoning, planning, creativity, critical

thinking, and problem-solving. The purpose of the

presentation is to review the positive and potentially

negative attributes of AI. Doctor Marie Curie, winner

of 2 Noble Prizes once said: “Nothing in this world is

to be feared...only understood”.

Contact Tony Ramos at 830-792-4044 to find out more and get started at Dietert Center.

54 Years with

The Dietert Center

In August 1969 at the age of 73, Harry Dietert

purchased a small house on Jefferson Street in

Kerrville to set up a community activity center for

senior citizens.

Working with Kerrville State Hospital’s Volunteer

Services Council, Mr. Dietert organized

the Dietert Senior Citizen’s Center.

Their goal was to address the challenge of leisure

time and the desire of older citizens to involve

themselves in helping others.

Mr. Dietert envisioned the center as a place where

older adults in the Hill Country could “stake their

claim for the gold of their golden years” in an

atmosphere that promoted fellowship,

support and caring.

True to Harry Dietert’s original vision, we are

a volunteer-driven, community-based nonprofit

organization that helps men and women maintain

active, healthy and independent lives in their older

years.
