Mandolin. Louis de Bernières
wove his gripping story of
wartime love in amongst the

and the outstanding natural

of war. 30 years on, the lure

North
Kefalonia
Fiskardo sits close to the
northern tip of the island,
made extraordinarily
photogenic by the Venetian
houses that line its sheltered
harbour inlet in sugaralmond
shades. These
beautiful old buildings are
home to the many charming
shops and restaurants that
help make Fiskardo so deeply
desirable, whether you come
to sail, shop or simply relax
and watch the world at work
and play. Bobbing in the
peacock-blue water are boats
of all kinds, from fishing craft
to luxury cruisers lured by
the prospect of fine waterside
dining and tiny, jewel-like
bays for a secluded swim. The
north is also home to Myrtos
beach, possibly the mostphotographed
stretch of sand
in the whole of Greece.

South Kefalonia
In the south, Trapezaki
nestles beneath mighty
Mount Ainos, the island’s
highest peak, with a string
of sandy beaches at its
feet. One of our favourites
is Trapezaki beach, which
is narrow but well-supplied
with sunbeds and a great
taverna that’s open for
lunch and dinner in the
season. If you like a little
more activity then Lourdas
is the place, popular with
families thanks to its
shallow water and seafront
restaurants. For older kids,
Agios Thomas beach has
rock pools to swim in and
exceptionally clear water.
You can walk to a beach
from most of our south
Kefalonia villas, so a car isn’t
a necessity; and if you want
to see Kefalonia’s famous
loggerhead turtles, head to
Argostoli harbour.

Set on a hillside close to the
village of Fiskardo, Island View
is secluded, comfortable and
full of Kefalonian character.
THE
TRAVEL INSIDER
Once you’ve explored
the more popular sites of
Kefalonia, make time to visit
St George’s Castle in the
south. High on a hill between
Trapezaki and Argostoli,
this impressive structure was
started by the Byzantines
in the 12th century and
finished by the Venetians in
1545. The castle became
the administrative capital
of Kefalonia, until the18th
century when it moved to
Argostoli. Visitors today will
pay a small fee to enter and
marvel at the coats of arms
and atmospheric ruins. If you
need to refuel, there are three
excellent restaurants within the
city walls with stunning views
over the south of the island.
