Get ready for an inspiring day out 

No longer is it enough to talk about heating and plumbing in isolation, now we 

focus on the much wider aspects of heat, water, air and energy. Working together 

across these sectors is what InstallerSHOW is all about. And that synergy 

provides some very exciting opportunities for everyone. 

The extraordinary growth of InstallerSHOW is 

evidence of just how dynamic and influential our 

industry has become. The show launched in 2015 with 

65 exhibitors and 3,000 visitors. Today we fill two of 

the biggest halls in the NEC with over 600 exhibitors 

from all over the world who see the event as a key 

route to market. And we expect to welcome 20,000 

visitors who specify and make decisions about 

projects large and small in everything from healthcare 

and hospitality to leisure and education – not 

forgetting the huge domestic and commercial 

markets where many of our installer visitors dominate.

A bumper content programme 

With sessions curated for local authorities, housing associations, developers, 

architects, energy managers, building services engineers and more, the elemental 

content theatres will deliver a far-reaching and informative programme across the 

three days of InstallerSHOW. Lucy Dixon, Head of Content for elemental, looks at

elemental Arena 

We’ve introduced the elemental Arena this year – 

sponsored by Heat Geek – to host our biggest sessions, 

including politicians, celebrities and the industry’s leading 

experts on the decarbonisation of buildings. There are so 

many highlights it might be tricky to drag yourself away, 

such as Deborah Meaden talking about sustainable 

business, Greg Jackson on energy innovation and 

Chris Skidmore OBE, the author of the Mission Zero 

report, discussing what we need to do to meet those 

all-important net zero targets. We will also have a 

keynote speech from Lord Callanan, and a debate on

Climate Solutions Theatre 

The third elemental theatre - another new addition for 

2024 - is the Climate Solutions Theatre, a space where 

sustainable heating and cooling will be the main focus, 

alongside indoor air quality and the challenges posed 

by larger construction projects. We’ll be hosting several 

events for World Refrigeration Day on Wednesday 26th 

and then, on the final day of the show, our attention turns 

to inclusion and diversity, with several panels showcasing 

the work of women in this sector. TV’s Rachel Riley is also 

joining us on this day, to talk about careers in STEM for 

women, alongside several industry legends.

Housing Hub 

Over in the Housing Hub, we have several brilliant 

content partners delivering talks on decarbonising our 

existing homes, as well as sustainable newbuild. The 

National Retrofit Hub will be highlighting the opportunities 

that retrofit offers to businesses, as well as addressing 

some of the challenges for the supply chain. The National 

Home Improvement Council will be running a must-see 

session on the Building Safety Act and what it means for 

you, and there will be an inspiring panel discussion from 

the Welsh government’s housing decarbonisation team 

sharing insights from its Optimised RetroFit programme.

Always one of the highlights of the InstallerPLAZA, join

Heating Installer 

Awards 2024 

A guaranteed crowd-puller, the winners of the 2024 Heating Installer Awards will 

be revealed on the InstallerPLAZA at 1pm on the second day of the show. 

The regional and sustainability winners, as well as the 

finalists for its Rising Star and HVAC categories, have 

already been announced. The shortlists were 

decided by a panel of experts including representatives 

from the awards’ partners CIPHE, The IPG, Polypipe 

Building Products, Samsung Climate Solutions and 

Stelrad, who scored all of the entries on their technical 

expertise, problem-solving, product knowledge and 

outstanding work. 

The panel was joined by the 2023 Heating Installer 

Awards national winner, James Bowen from Integral 

Plumbing, Heating & Renewables Ltd and Most 

Sustainable winner, Liam Barry from Custom 

Renewables, who scored their respective categories. 

Now in its ninth year, the Heating Installer Awards 

recognises the achievements and raises the credibility 

of plumbers and heating installers across the country 

who deliver excellent work on a daily basis. Targeting 

every region across the UK, the awards encourage 

plumbers and installers to nominate a project that they 

are particularly proud of. The projects demonstrate 

high technicality, outstanding professionalism and 

exceptional service – all resulting in a happy customer. 

The industry judges described the entries received 

this year as of an exceptionally high standard, which 

made selecting the winners no easy task.

Beyond the elemental theatres and InstallerPLAZA, a raft of informative sessions 

are taking place throughout Halls 4 and 5 of the NEC, with content programmes

Solar Innovations 

With a focus on solar PV and solar thermal, the Solar 

Innovations zone combines technical information on 

both the present and future of the sector with 

hands-on demos of the latest technology, as well as 

sessions looking at battery storage and the 

relationship between heat pumps and solar. 

BMA Theatre: Future of Water 

Presented in collaboration with the Bathroom 

Manufacturers Association, The BMA Theatre: 

Future of Water, will serve as a platform for installers, 

retailers, designers, manufacturers, and specifiers in 

the bathroom sector. The feature promises to 

deliver the latest products, solutions, and insightful 

discussions, reflecting the association’s commitment 

to a sustainable future. 

Attendees can expect presentations, panel debates, 

and exclusive interviews on topics ranging from the 

use of digital solutions to the question of whether 

plumbers should be licensed. 

Heat Geek Theatre

Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms is set to debut at InstallerSHOW 2024, offering 

a blend of technology, tools, innovation, and inspiration for attendees. Its aim is 

to bring the industry closer through education, knowledge sharing, and 

networking opportunities. 

Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms will offer a packed 

content programme across two theatres covering 

topics such as water and energy efficiency, design 

innovation, sustainable and smart technology, and 

changing legislation. It is backed by a number of 

organisations including the BMA, BiKBBI, NKBA, 

AMDEA UK and the Unified Water Label, as well as a 

host of leading manufacturers. 

Kitchen of the Future 

The Kitchen of the Future attraction, in partnership 

with BiKBBi, will provide exclusive and immersive 

content specifically curated for kitchen installers. This 

dedicated space will also showcase cutting-edge 

technologies and offer invaluable insights for installers 

aiming to expand their business. 

It will include talks, networking opportunities, and a 

chance to engage with top suppliers, designers, 

merchants, and fellow installers. Some of the topics to 

be covered include:

What really matters to kitchen and 

bathroom installers? 

There are a lot of national issues that need fixing it in the kitchen and 

bathroom installation industry, but are day-to-day problems like having their 

tools stolen more important for individual installers? kbbreview managing editor 

Andrew Davies looks at the real motivations for change. 

The industry needs to do more to solve the skills 

crisis in kitchen and bathroom installation – yep, agree 

with that. The government needs to support small 

businesses more to encourage sustainability – 

absolutely, totally on board with that one too. In fact, 

it’s hard to disagree with any industry-wide initiatives, 

plans or ideas that are designed to improve the lot of 

kitchen and bathroom installers. They’re usually 

entirely correct, well-thought through and have 

admirable aims and objectives. 

The trouble is, real life keeps getting in the way 

doesn’t it? The biggest problem facing any 

industry-leaders trying to solve universal issues is 

getting the engagement of the very people it is 

designed to help. 

And while we can’t pretend that ambivalence doesn’t 

exist, most of the time I’m certain that for those people 

their own individual day-to-day problems seem – and 

often are – much more important to them. 

I recently contacted several kitchen and bathroom 

installers and asked them what the biggest issues 

facing their business were. I expected them to say that 

skills gaps, apprentices, the economy etc were top of 

their agenda but, of course, it wasn’t that simple. 

While they thought all those things were important, 

one thing came up again and again – tool theft. Not 

only did it come up but their anger, disbelief and 

rancour spilled out with very little prompting. This is a 

problem with a highly-charged emotive core that the 

other universal issues simply do not have. 


And, whether we like it or not, collective passion and 

energy are often what drives real change. “It’s not just 

the cost of replacement tools. It’s the loss of earnings 

while not being able to replace them and the effect on 

mental health due to not being able to pay bills,” one 

installer told me. 

It’s not hard to understand, no tools means no work 

and they’re usually stolen from a van which can be 

literally ripped open to get inside. A report from On 

The Tools found that 78% of tradespeople have had 

their tools stolen, nearly 39% of them from their van 

when it’s parked outside their home. The report found 

that the average UK tradesperson is likely to have 

between £1,000 and £5,000 worth of tools stolen from 

them in just one incident. This report also uncovered 

that the self-employed are 38% more likely than the 

employed to have their tools stolen. Nearly 11% said 

they had to take time off or decline work while they 

found new equipment, and 13% had to pay to repair 

their vehicle. 

In other words, this is something that, at best, 

tradespeople live in fear of every day and, at worst, 

are dealing with the implications of right now. Of 

course, this concern makes it another universal issue 

for ‘the industry’ to try and solve. But the point is that 

if you’re a working installer, while you feel the effects 

of a slowing dwindling skilled workforce, it is not as 

immediate a problem as fearing the loss of the tools of 

your trade. The universal problem is also their 

day-to-day problem.

InstallerFUTURES: Inspiring the next generation 

InstallerFUTURES is the learner programme 

at InstallerSHOW, which aims to provide 

students and apprentices with a meaningful 

and structured visit to the show. 

Recruitment for InstallerFUTURES is carried out 

through our partnerships with local colleges and 

training centres. Transport is provided to the NEC, and 

learners are accompanied by their course leaders. 

The programme begins with a series of presentations 

designed to offer valuable insight into the industry. 

These sessions are delivered by a mix of installers, 

industry insiders and manufacturers, wrapping up with 

a visit from a celebrity guest. 

Attendees are then invited into InstallerSHOW itself, 

encouraged to visit the areas of most interest to them, 

and provided with complimentary lunch vouchers. 

The enhanced 2024 InstallerFUTURES programme 

has also seen the creation of an advisory board, 

comprised of industry associates who are passionate

Developing a thriving 

apprenticeship system 

Mark Allison, owner of Power Sonic Ltd, founder of 

the Apprentice 121 community, and member of the 

InstallerFUTURES Advisory Board, shares his top 

tips for those wanting to take on an apprentice. 

While the government has removed a lot of funding 

for employers in the recruitment of apprentices, we 

still have a building skills shortfall in the construction 

sector. With the ever-growing demands for heat 

pumps, solar PV, and battery storage, we need more 

skilled workers to deliver safe, high quality and 

long-lasting systems. 

In my own small business, we have built through the 

apprenticeship model and Nathan, who is well into his 

final year or so, is the latest to progress. We have seen 

excellent results in developing the skilled staff we 

need while also allowing apprentices to grow into full 

blown craftspeople with opportunities for life. 

But it is not without challenges, I have seen those in 

Apprentice 121 over the last four years with reports 

coming in daily around poor training providers, job 

losses, apprentice dropouts and workforce erosion. 

It’s one of the reasons I kept this all going after Covid. 

I often get asked by employers how to recruit and take 

on apprentices, and equally by apprentices looking for 

employment, so here are my top tips. 

Tips for employers on hiring an apprentice 

• Contact local colleges/training providers to 

determine if they have apprentices looking for work 

• Contact local authorities and local area initiatives 

to discover if any public or private grants/funding 

are available to help with initial recruitment costs 

• Spend time interviewing and ensure you get a good 

fit with a potential apprentice. Attitude is more 

important than anything else 

• Work with the training provider to deliver an 

effective apprenticeship and understand you are 

also responsible for delivery of the training out 

on site 

• Budget for the time/cost required during the initial 

6-12 months of an apprenticeship. Realistic 

expectations during the early part of an 

apprenticeship are especially important. The 

payback comes for the employer further down 

the road 

Tips for those wanting to be apprentices 

• Visit wholesaler/merchant counters in the local 

area and leave copies of a CV/contact details for 

any tradespeople they know who might be recruiting 

• Be active on social media, building up examples of 

any work you have done at college, home, or work 

experience 

• Look at the CPS database for local contractors and 

contact them by phone to enquire if they are taking 

on apprentices 

• Do not forget the basics and visit job boards to 

search for apprenticeships, along with local colleges 

and training providers even beyond the one(s) you 

are attending 

• Attitude is so important and, while it’s daunting 

stepping into the workplace, try to be confident, 

friendly, and dress smartly to make the best 

impression

In the plumbing, heating, and electrical industries, 

we should have a thriving apprenticeship system 

but for a multitude of reasons that doesn’t seem to 

be happening consistently enough. It is my hope 

that small employers are helped towards the 

apprenticeship route, and we can return to times of 

the past when most tradespeople had an apprentice! 

With the time and support to nurture the transfer 

of those skills into the future, we can level up the 

installation standards in homes and businesses 

around the UK.

Danfoss - Ally and Icon2 

Controlling home energy costs just got easier with the launch of 

the Danfoss Ally, a smart heating solution. Designed to provide 

homeowners with complete control over their heating systems, 

Danfoss Ally offers unparalleled convenience and energy savings of 

up to 30%. At its core, Danfoss Ally serves as a WiFi gateway, 

seamlessly connecting and controlling the boiler, TRVs and UFH 

components – delivering all the benefits of a full-blown smart heating 

system. The Ally components include a boiler relay, an eTRV, a room 

sensor and the Icon 2 UFH controller – you choose what elements 

you need for your installation. 

The Danfoss Ally app acts as the central hub, empowering users 

to manage their heating remotely from anywhere in the world. Zigbee 

3.0-certified for wireless communication, the app integrates 

effortlessly with digital assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, 

enabling voice-controlled operation for ultimate convenience. 

At the heart of the system lies the Danfoss Ally Gateway, a 

programmable wireless control unit. 

The Ally Room Sensor accurately measures room temperature 

and humidity levels, while the Ally Boiler Relay optimises energy 

usage by activating the boiler only when heat demand is detected, 

minimising wastage and reducing energy consumption. 

Danfoss Ally eTRVs are battery-powered (the batteries last for 

2 years), compact and easy to operate with a manual handwheel 

and single button. They feature an open window function which will 

automatically shut off the heat for 30 minutes, after which the heating 

in the room will be restarted. 

The new Icon2 UFH controller is fast and hassle-free to 

operate. The main controller is designed with fewer components 

which, combined with an easy-to-use commissioning app ensures a 

fast and hassle-free installation – on average just nine minutes. This 

controller also offers automatic balancing functionality; by prioritising 

longer pipes in large spaces during times of high heat demand, the 

system maximises comfort while conserving energy. Icon 2 is available 

in wired and wireless room versions to suit almost any application. 

Fränkische - profi-air 130 

Fränkische is expanding its profi-air product family with a new 

ventilation unit for smaller apartments with air volumes of up to 

130 m3/h. The profi-air 130 flat combines compactness with flexibility 

during installation, configuration and operation. 

The unit can be mounted vertically and horizontally on the wall or the 

ceiling. Thanks to the easySWITCH function, installers can swap air 

connections on site. Thanks to its compact dimensions 

(580 x 900 x 194 mm) the unit can also be used in confined spaces. 

“With profi-air 130 flat, we offer a device specifically 

designed for residential buildings and the housing 

industry. It is particularly compact and flexible to install 

– ideal for smaller apartments with limited space.”

Fränkische’s Building Technology Division. 

In terms of energy consumption and efficiency, profi-air 130 flat 

complies with energy efficiency class A. Fränkische has also applied 

for Passive House Institute certification and DIBt approval. An 

extensive range of accessories allows for customised configuration. 

Control via the free profi-air cockpit app is designed to be 

particularly convenient, and the profi-air cockpit pro software supports 

installers step-by-step in the adjustment process. 

Mark Vitow - Top-Fix 

Mark Vitow is set to unveil the newly extended range of the Top-Fix 

waste installation solution. As the official distributor of Top-Fix, Mark 

Vitow assumes a central role in introducing this innovative product. 

Top-Fix introduces a paradigm shift in fitting shower, bath, kitchen, 

and basin wastes by offering a novel top-down installation approach. 

The two-piece system of Top-Fix effortlessly drops into the waste 

hole from above, eliminating the complexities of awkward angles and 

the need to simultaneously hold parts in place from below. Once in 

position, the two main components are secured using a 14mm bolt, 

creating a robust watertight seal. 

Engineered to seamlessly integrate with all UK plumbing systems, 

Top-Fix accommodates both older and modern sinks and showers. 

Notably, the solution requires no silicone, streamlining the installation 

process for enhanced cleanliness and efficiency.

Mira Showers - New Platinum 

Mira Showers has unveiled its most advanced digital shower to date: 

the Mira Platinum. Winner of both a Red Dot and iF 2023 award, Mira 

Platinum offers a seamless and fully connected experience that helps 

homeowners control, monitor, and track their water usage – allowing 

installers to offer the very latest in innovative showering solutions. 

Designed with installers in mind, Mira Platinum is also a response 

to consumer demand for practical showers that are minimal in design 

and hassle, offering solutions with advanced technology and 

intelligently intuitive designs. 

The Platinum responds to a series of voice commands, can be 

started and stopped remotely via the Mira Showers app, and enables 

total personalisation so that everyone can create the perfect shower 

for them. 

To encourage responsible water usage, the Mira Platinum comes 

fitted with adjustable temperature and flow pre-sets, as well as a 

built-in Eco mode. 

The Eco mode limits water flow to between 4 and 8 litres per 

minute – up to 4 litres per minute less than when not in use – with the 

Red Dot design award-winning Mira 360 handset making sure that 

users’ experience remains faultless. Featuring four spray settings – 

Rain, Glide, Silk and Burst – that can be changed at speed, Platinum 

can also be fitted with a 250mm overhead deluge, available as part 

of the dual outlet option, that offers large nozzles for an enhanced 

experience and full coverage. 

Designed to allow for ease of installation, Mira Platinum is 

compatible with all systems and pressures, comes with push-fit 

connections, has a smaller footprint and has an easy-to-use ‘plug and 

play’ power connection. 

Just as with its predecessor, the Mira Platinum also comes with a 

fully wireless user interface, meaning that there are no data cables to 

worry about, making for an easier installation. The controller 

comfortably sits within its magnetic cradle when in use and when 

needed, can be lifted out and charged via the USB-C cable provided. 

Mira Platinum is available as a rear or ceiling fed variant and also 

comes in single or dual outlet options, in Single and Dual formats. 

Lite Work Designs - Heat Pump Mover 

The Heat Pump Mover is designed to help installers manoeuvre 

pumps around site. The mover simply becomes an extension of the 

pump, making it safer, easier and more effective. 

CEO Mike Wyeth is an installer. He previously struggled to move heat 

pumps around sites without injuring himself or damaging the pump. 

Mike says: 

“When moving a pump across a building or customer 

site, we really struggle. We get the job done but it’s 

hard work and sometimes a bit embarrassing. The 

mover simplifies the process – secure the mover to the 

pump and off you go, it really is that simple. 

“I want installers to get the benefits I’ve enjoyed with 

the mover for the past 3 years. We now have a 

production version ready which we are selling directly 

to installers and having positive discussions with global 

pump manufacturers, EU/UK product distributors and 

large UK installers”. 

The mover was tested to ensure compliance with Health and Safety at 

Work Regulations and HSE Manual Handling Process, and the majority 

of the weight is now on the mover – leaving the installer to easily 

manoeuvre the pump with significantly less chance of personal injury 

or damage to the pump. 

The pump slots in and is secured to the mover baseboard, making 

it an extension of the pump to enhance manoeuvrability. As an 

example, a Daikin Altherma 3 Monobloc weighing 150kg is reduced 

to 15kg as you pull it across the site. It is designed for a lone worker to 

unpack, mount and position the pump without a need to interrupt or 

wait for others. 

Thomas Dudley - Quantum 

Thomas Dudley has announced the launch of the 

all new Quantum Pushbutton Operated Leak-Free 

Syphonic Toilet Flush Valve. This state-of-the-art 

product represents a significant leap forward in 

toilet flushing technology, offering unparalleled

Passiv - Passiv Smart Thermostat 

The Passiv Smart Thermostat makes heat pump control simple and 

can reduce heating bills by 30%. The Energy Saving Trust has verified 

that it increases the Coefficient of Performance (CoP) of a heat pump 

by 17% and it can also optimise to time-of-use tariffs and rooftop 

solar generation. 

The Passiv Smart Thermostat is the first in a new generation of 

smarter heating controls. Once installed, it learns how a home heats 

up and cools down and how a heating system behaves. It then uses 

local weather forecasts to calculate the optimal way to meet a 

homeowner’s comfort requirements with smart preheating, while 

continuously optimising the heat pump’s flow temperature to 

maximise its COP. This also removes the need for an installer to set a 

weather compensation curve, taking the guesswork out of heat 

pump installation. 

The Passiv Thermostat and Programmer gives complete control in 

the home, alongside the Passiv App, that lets you control your heating 

and hot water from anywhere. 

The Passiv Smart Thermostat also enables heat pump users to 

participate in Greener Grid Payments. Greener Grid Payments is the
