“The <strong>Laughing</strong> <strong>While</strong> Conducting”<br />
series of paintings are based on Artemisia Gentileschi's self-portrait as St Catherine.<br />
My paintings are the same size as the St Catherine original and the protagonists in my paintings all face the<br />
same direction, giving the series a sense of formula and repetition while depicting something out of control.<br />
I'm interested in images of female saints when they carry or are positioned next to the means of martyrdom. In<br />
Gentileschi's paintings however she doesn't look like a victim at all she looks more like she's holding a weapon.<br />
So, when I saw that painting ages ago the idea came to me that it would be interesting to paint women holding<br />
weapons and making weapons out of ordinary things.<br />

Ikon Gallery<br />
Ikon is an internationally acclaimed contemporary art venue located in Birmingham. Housed in a magnificent<br />
neo-gothic school building, it is an educational charity for the promotion of visual art of international<br />
significance, playing a key role in the cultural life of the region.<br />
Education is at the heart of Ikon’s activities. Their education team builds meaningful relationships with Ikon’s<br />
audiences that enables visitors to engage with, discuss and reflect on contemporary art.<br />
Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Artemisia Gentileschi (part of The National Gallery 200) is on display at Ikon Gallery. Surrounding the Gentileschi<br />
work, and made as a direct response, is a solo exhibition by contemporary Irish artist Jesse Jones — whose artistic practice crosses film, sound, performance,<br />
sculpture and installation.<br />
‘Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon’ presents multiple symbols of feminist resistance. Jones transforms Ikon’s gallery space to present audiences with an opportunity to<br />
'encounter' Gentileschi’s self portrait through a new lens.<br />
Jesse Jones’ exhibition is supported by The Ampersand Foundation, Culture Ireland, Arts Council of Ireland and the Finnis Scott Foundation. This exhibition is<br />
presented as part of Ikon’s 60th anniversary year.<br />
Colley Ison Gallery will be showing selected works from the ‘<strong>Laughing</strong> <strong>While</strong> Conducting’ series, which is <strong>Roxana</strong> <strong>Halls</strong> response to<br />
