of the mission of The Children’s Museum. 

Our ability to create extraordinary learning 

experiences that have the power to transform 

the lives of children and families is the result 

of the dedication of our staff, volunteers, 

Board of Trustees, Guild members, generous 

donors and friends. In 2006, this was 

demonstrated in powerful ways.

The groundwork for an extraordinary 2006 at The 

Children’s Museum was laid in the months and years 

prior. The lengthy process of planning, designing and 

constructing exhibits, and visitor program offerings 

culminated in a year in which the museum presented 

our community with a record-number of exceptional 

family-learning experiences. 

A five-year partnership with renowned glass artist 

Dale Chihuly came to fruition with the opening of 

Fireworks of Glass, Chihuly’s largest permanent installation 

of blown glass ever created. The impact of this 

new exhibit touched every area of the museum, 

spurring new offerings on Festival Park, in the 

SpaceQuest Planetarium, through new interpretive 

presentations and on the web. 

A temporary exhibition of Chihuly’s work, Fiori dei 

Bambini, joined additional experiences that focused 

on the art of Norman Rockwell, the science of weather 

and meteorology, tolerance and acceptance through

literature, and the beloved characters of Sesame 

Street. The combination of exhibitions was the catalyst 

for increased visitor attendance across almost all 

business indicators. 

Continuing to build on the success of Dinosphere: 

Now You’re in Their World,® the museum announced 

the formal naming of Dracorex hogwartsia, a new, 

one-of-a-kind dinosaur species with a moniker in 

tribute to Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling. The 

announcement garnered national and international 

press coverage. 

An energized International Traveling Exhibits initiative 

debuted two new experiences in 2006: Bob the 

Builder — Project: Build It and National 

Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure. Serving the 

community of museums, both exhibits boasted 

robust touring schedules in advance of their public 

unveilings. 

To support anticipated attendance growth over the 

next several years, the museum began the process of 

planning for the next phase of campus expansion and 

enhancement. The immediate communities surrounding 

the neighborhood were among the first 

invited to provide input into the next phase of the 

museum’s development. 

In support of our global community, museum staff 

made trips to the Middle East and Asia, having been 

tapped to consult on the development of world-class 

facilities to serve children and families in Cairo, Egypt, 

and Guangzhou, China. 

Planning for future visitor experiences continued in 

earnest, as we bid farewell to Mysteries in History, one 

of the museum’s oldest galleries. Advisory panels were 

formed to guide the development and construction of 

The Power of Children and Global Perspectives, new 

permanent exhibits scheduled to open in 2007 and 

2009, respectively. 

We hope that as you read the 2006 Annual Report, you 

will join us in celebrating our many accomplishments 

during the past year. In 2006, the museum served 

more than 1.1 million visitors as attendance grew 

eight percent in nearly every category. Through exhibitions, 

programs, special events and strategic initiatives, 

we continue to strive to give back to the communities 

we serve — locally, regionally, nationally and 

internationally. We sincerely thank you for your

Giving Back to Our Community 

Through Extraordinary Family Learning Experiences 

2006 EXHIBITIONS 

2006 may well be remembered as the year in which 

The Children’s Museum opened a record-number of 

extraordinary family-learning experiences. The diverse 

cadre of permanent and temporary exhibitions 

unveiled over the course of the year yielded healthy 

growth in nearly every attendance category. 

Preparation for the 2007 openings of Health House, 

SciencePort and The Power of Children, in addition to 

consulting projects for museums in Egypt and China, 

commanded a significant amount of attention from the 

museum’s staff, as well as the Guild and Board of 

Trustees. From delighting preschool audiences to luring 

less traditional visitors and art lovers, there was something 

for everyone on the 2006 exhibition calendar.

PERMANENT EXHIBITIONS 

Five years of extensive planning and preparation culminated 

in early 2006 with the opening of one of the 

museum’s most extraordinary permanent exhibits, 

Fireworks of Glass.This breathtaking display of colorful 

blown glass, created by world-renowned artist Dale 

Chihuly, opened to the public on March 18, and through 

three unique components, introduced visitors to an 

artistic medium rarely found in a children’s museum. 

Reaching 43 feet into the museum’s core atrium, the 

exhibit tower is comprised of 3,200 pieces of blown glass. 

Vibrant red, yellow, cobalt blue, lime and orange horns 

and goosenecks fill the four-story space in a spectacular 

display of color. 

Suspended below the tower, the ceiling holds nearly 

1,700 pieces of glass from Chihuly’s spectacular series, 

including Ikebana, Seaforms, Persians, Chandelier Parts and 

Putti.The pieces are positioned in four large sections of 

clear glass and open to view from above and below.

The hands-on portion of the exhibit was positioned 

beneath the tower and ceiling on the museum’s Lower 

Level. Children and families gazed at the ceiling overhead 

from a round, rotating platform or created their own 

sculptures utilizing poly vitro pieces that mimic the 

unique glass designs in the tower and other Chihuly 

installations. On computer touch screens, visitors 

explored a 180-degree image of Chihuly’s hot shops and 

developed their own virtual blown glass sculptures. 

Other programs taught visitors about Chihuly, his team 

and the art of glassblowing, and offered more details on 

the creation and installation of Fireworks of Glass. 

Also on the Lower Level, the SpaceQuest ® Planetarium 

debuted Chihuly’s World of Glass, a theatrical interpretation 

of the artist’s Seattle studio and glass-blowing 

process. Narrated by Chihuly himself and developed by 

museum staff, this dynamic film culminated with the 

tower’s construction through time-lapse photography.

To further enhance the Fireworks of Glass experience, 

the museum presented the Hot Glass Roadshow — a traveling 

hot shop presented by New York’s Corning Museum 

of Glass. On Festival Park from March 18 to June 4, visitors 

interacted with a skilled team of glassmakers as they 

created unique, blown glass designs — many of which 

were then displayed inside the museum. From the stage 

of the 35,000-pound, 28-foot-long Roadshow unit, a narrator 

explained the fascinating glassblowing process to 

large, attentive audiences. 

The entire institution embraced the opening in a collaborative 

and supportive manner: Festival Park and the 29th and 30th Street corridor bordering the museum’s 

campus were dressed in colorful Fireworks of Glass 

banners, and member families created more than 500 

artistic flowers that were “planted” on museum grounds. 

A “Chihuly 101” training program prepared almost 300 

staff members and volunteers for the exhibition opening. 

Unique Web site companion pieces were developed to 

extend the Fireworks of Glass experience beyond a visit 

to the museum. Commemorative membership cards 

were produced to celebrate the exhibit’s opening, and 

The Children’s Museum Store staff selected an array of 

glass art and jewelry to enhance its merchandise mix and 

generate incremental sales revenue. Exclusive preview 

events were held for educators and donors, culminating 

with the Gala of Glitter and Glass, presented by Chubb 

Group of Insurance Companies. With special guest Dale 

Chihuly in attendance, the black tie evening and exhibit 

unveiling netted over $137,000 in support of the 

museum’s annual fundraising goals.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS 

Rockwell’s America: Celebrating the Art of Norman 

Rockwell ended a successful seven-month engagement 

on January 16 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A blockbuster 

exhibit by all accounts, this multi-generational 

family experience, presented by Charter One, showcased 

three-dimensional, immersive recreations of some of the 

beloved artist’s most cherished images. Augmented by 

original Rockwell paintings from the museum’s collections 

and others, this exhibit explored the life and times 

of our country through the eyes of one of America’s most 

celebrated figures. 

Based on the popular book series, Scholastic’s The Magic 

School Bus Kicks Up A Storm provided children and 

families the opportunity to ride along with Ms. Frizzle 

and her class on an adventure that provided hands-on 

exploration of the world of weather. Sponsored by 

Microsoft, children and families learned about the 

science behind meteorology as they experimented with 

the basic principles and ingredients of weather making. 

A media partnership with WISH-TV, the central Indiana 

CBS network affiliate, showcased their meteorologists 

and gave visitors a closer glimpse into the world of 

weather forecasting. 

In early March 2006, Every Picture Tells A Story: Teaching 

Tolerance Through Children’s Picture Books connected 

children and families with the original artwork from over 

40 famous children’s books and included interactive envi- 

ronments that brought these books to life for visitors of 

all ages. Classic children’s books including “Enemy Pie,” 

“It’s Okay to be Different,”“Charlotte’s Web” and “The 

Sneetches” provided an opportunity to begin dialogue 

about respect and appreciating diversity.The important 

messages conveyed in this exhibition allowed families to 

tackle concepts like community, understanding and 

acceptance. Accenture generously presented this exhibition, 

with additional support from the Macy’s Fund of the 

Federated Department Stores Foundation. 

Fiori dei Bambini: A Chihuly Garden of Glass for 

Children further transported visitors into the world of 

Dale Chihuly. A fantasy garden showcasing some of the 

artist’s most spectacular shapes and forms was in full 

bloom by early June 2006. Chihuly’s Mille Fiore style 

showcased strands of glass melted together and cut to 

create intricate designs resembling flowers. By combining 

light and glass, the exhibition created the illusion 

of an exquisite garden and reflecting pool. The exhibit 

also featured glass from Chihuly’s Hilltop Artists in 

Residence program that offers at-risk youth the opportunity 

to learn the art of glassblowing while providing 

positive life experiences. Hands-on activities and work 

from local glass artists were on display through 

September 2007.

Preschoolers visited their favorite address at 

Frontier Presents Can You Tell Me How to Get to 

Sesame Street?. 

A Norman Rockwell interpreter explains Rockwell’s 

art to visitors young and old. 

A summer visit to The Children’s Museum offered children 

and families an immersive trip to a favorite preschool 

neighborhood. Frontier Presents Can You Tell 

Me How to Get to Sesame Street? was a favorite destination 

for the young and young at heart. In a variety of 

interactive settings, fans of the beloved PBS series sang 

the alphabet with Elmo, counted to 20 with Count Von 

Count, visited Oscar’s Newsstand and explored size in 

Big Bird’s Same and Different Nest. Families were also 

invited to explore concepts about letters, numbers, 

words and diversity issues, while adults explored how 

the innovative program emerged and developed over 

the past 30 years. Presented locally by Fazoli’s. 

In its 43 rd year, The Children’s Museum Guild’s Haunted 

House returned for it’s annual scary season. Monster 

Manor, the Guild’s take on a haunted British Manor 

home, welcomed nearly 55,000 brave guests through its 

doors. This delightfully haunting experience filled with 

friendliness, fright and fun took fearless souls on a tour 

of exciting twists and turns. Conceived, produced and 

staffed by the Guild, the Haunted House boasted sellout 

crowds at preview events, the ever-popular Feast 

with the Witches, Trick-or-Treat Theater Shows and 

Scout Overnight Camps, and netted over $409,000 for 

The Children’s Museum. 

A holiday visit to central Indiana is not complete without 

a visit to Jolly Days Winter Wonderland. Opening on 

Thanksgiving weekend, this warm holiday tradition 

attracted visitors far and wide. Showcasing a display of 

vintage Stieff animals, this wintertime classic also 

brought back traditional holiday favorites such as the 

Yule Slide, Jingles the Jolly Bear and visits with Santa. 

The Ice Castle provided a toddler-size version of the Yule 

Slide, and young visitors tried their ice-fishing skills and 

visited the Cookie Café to feed their imagination. Jolly 

Days Winter Wonderland was generously presented by 

Chase with additional support from Target.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVELING 

EXHIBITIONS 

The success of The Children’s Museum’s 2006 exhibit run 

extended to its International Traveling Exhibitions initiatives. 

The museum’s long-time traveling exhibitions combined 

with new offerings to deliver an extraordinary 100 

percent of available bookings for the year. 

In late November 2005, generous funding from the Delta 

Faucet Company was secured to develop Bob the 

Builder — Project: Build It. Based on the popular tele- 

vision series, the exhibit inspired visitors to spend time in 

“Sunflower Valley” with Bob, Wendy and the world of colorful 

machines that make up the rest of the can-do crew. 

During the project’s development, over 50 venues across 

the country expressed an interest in the exhibition, 

prompting the decision to construct and tour two identical 

exhibits. By June 2006, the highly anticipated exhibit 

debuted at the museum to large audiences of eager children 

and their families. Reinforcing environmentally 

friendly themes, the exhibit inspired teamwork and 

hands-on problem solving skills in preschoolers. 

Following a three-month stay, this exhibit began its 

national tour in Fall 2006. Bob the Builder— Project: 

Build It is currently booked at venues across the United 

States through 2009.

learned how to plan and build their own fun.

The year also ended a three-year process to develop, 

fund and construct National Geographic MAPS: Tools 

for Adventure. Generously funded by Lilly Endowment, 

Inc., with support from the Institute of Museum and 

Library Services, the exhibit received local support from 

FedEx. A partnership with the National Geographic 

Society, this new traveling exhibit featured the adventures 

of real modern day explorers and their use of maps 

to navigate their way across the globe. Visitors were 

introduced to land, sea, air and space explorers such as 

Zahi Hawass, Phil Masters, Amelia Earhart and Nainoa 

Thompson. At the October 2006 opening, visitors were 

treated to lectures by Dr. Zahi Hawass, a world famous 

archaeologist and Egyptologist featured in the exhibit. 

Shipwreck explorer Phil Masters and underwater archaeologist 

David Moore met with families and shared their 

experiences using maps to locate Blackbeard’s pirate 

ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Through artifacts and 

interactive experiences relating to the work of each 

explorer, children and adults learned how maps are tools 

for adventure. After ending its debut run in early 2007, 

the exhibit was scheduled to travel to The National 

Geographic Museum at Explorer’s Hall in Washington, 

D.C., followed by a visit to Chicago’s Museum of Science 

and Industry in late 2007.

LILLY THEATER 

Nearly 50,000 visitors enjoyed performances in Lilly 

Theater in 2006. The productions staged during the year 

told new and familiar stories — all used live theater to 

reinforce the importance of true friendship 

and happiness. 

WHY MOSQUITOES BUZZ 

This African folktale told the story of a mosquito who 

buzzed in an iguana’s ear, keeping the sun from coming 

up. Audiences learned that sometimes the littlest things 

can have consequences that cannot be predicted. 

STUART LITTLE 

The adventures of this extraordinary mouse came to life 

in Lilly Theater in time to play to large, spring break audiences. 

As Stuart grew up with his human family, he faced 

the challenges of being small in a very big world. One 

adventure after another led him to find his true friend. 

ALADDIN 

Visitors during the summer took an adventure with 

Aladdin as he discovered the wonder of magic with the 

genie and the princess. Over 17,000 visitors watched as 

Aladdin outsmarted the evil magician on his journey to 

find the true meaning of happiness. 

THE SELFISH GIANT 

Holiday audiences were introduced to a giant whose 

cold and selfish heart caused Spring to abandon his 

beautiful garden. In this production, three young children 

brought Spring back to the garden and happiness 

to the giant’s heart.

During the holidays, the Selfish Giant — and Lilly 

Theater audiences — learned the true meaning of 

happiness. 

The classic story of Aladdin came to life at Lilly 

Theater last summer.

SPACEQUEST® PLANETARIUM 

Overall attendance in the SpaceQuest® Planetarium grew 

to 131,097 — representing a 15 percent increase in visitation 

from 2005. Planetarium visitors benefited from significant 

system upgrades to enhance their experience, 

and in March, Chihuly’s World of Glass, an original production 

created to enhance Fireworks of Glass, debuted 

to large audiences. 

Shows continuing in 2006 included The Sky Above 

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Cosmic Canopy. 

Their introductory approach to exploring the stars and 

constellations continued to be popular with children 

and families. 

Debuting in October, in conjunction with National 

Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure, Celestial Maps 

showed visitors how to use the night sky and its constellations 

to determine location and direction, just as 

explorers once did.

MUSEUM COLLECTIONS 

Although its acquisition was originally announced a year 

earlier, in May 2006 the museum and members of its 

International Paleontology Advisory Committee formally 

named a new dinosaur genus and species. The naming 

was timed to coincide with the formal presentation of a 

scientific paper on the specimen at the Current Research 

on Late Cretaceous Vertebrates from the Western Interior 

Symposium. This unique, one-of-a-kind species was put 

on public display and officially given the name Dracorex 

hogwartsia, garnering international media attention and 

engaging hoards of Harry Potter fans. 

The first part of the name, Dracorex, means “Dragon King” 

and was chosen because the dinosaur bore a close 

resemblance to the mythical dragon with its bony head 

covered in spikes and knobs. The species name hogwartsia 

was selected to honor the fictional Hogwarts 

School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, created by children’s 

book author J.K. Rowling. 

In granting permission to name the specimen for her 

work, Rowling said,“The naming of Dracorex hogwartsia is 

easily the most unexpected honor to have come my way 

since the publication of the Harry Potter books!” 

Dracorex is a member of the Pachycephalosaur family, 

commonly referred to as “boneheads.” This group of 

antelope-sized dinosaurs lived over 66 million years ago 

during the Cretaceous Period. 

“This fossil is a scientifically significant milestone in the 

world of paleontology,” wrote Dr. Robert Bakker, an internationally 

renowned paleontologist. “It proves that 

family trees were still branching off and evolving, even 

near the end of the age of dinosaurs.” 

Steve Saulsbury, Patrick Saulsbury and Brian Buckmeier, 

all from Sioux City, Iowa, donated the nearly complete 

Pachycephalosaur skull to The Children’s Museum. After a 

summer presentation on Level 2, Dracorex moved to its 

permanent home in Dinosphere. ®

INTERPRETATION, GALLERIES AND 

PROGRAMS 

In 2006, the museum reorganized its interpretation programs 

to further enhance the quality and delivery of 

educational and family-learning content. Professionally 

trained theatrical performers were added to the 

museum’s staff, delivering an average of 96 presentations 

per day. In addition, 76 new interpretation programs 

were added to the Interpretation Department’s offerings. 

A new approach was introduced to the Museum 

Apprentice Program (MAP). Project-based activities were 

added to the MAP’s responsibilities and in 2006, they 

developed an exhibit on Rio Grande do Sul, a state in 

Brazil and one of the sister states of Indiana. The youth 

worked extensively with staff to create the exhibit, and it 

was presented to family and staff in early August. 

Traditional free days — Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 

Presidents’ Day, El Dia de los Niños and Christmas Eve — 

continued to drive strong attendance in 2006, with El Dia 

de los Niños doubling its attendance figures from the 

prior year. The addition of Target as the lead sponsor for 

First Thursday Family Nights allowed the museum to 

lengthen those free evenings by one hour and enhance 

program offerings.

Led by a trained volunteer, schoolchildren participated 

in a new program called CSI: Curious 

Scientific Investigators. 

Sara Snow, host of the Discovery Health channel’s 

“Get Fresh with Sara Snow,” talked about nutrition 

at PlayFit. 

In September of 2006, The Children’s Museum of 

Indianapolis along with the Anthem Foundation, kicked 

off its new health initiative, PlayFit. On special PlayFit days 

at the museum, visitors participated in healthy lifestyle 

activities, learned about family health issues and were 

provided with engaging experiences to encourage 

healthy choices. Compared to the same dates in 2005, 

PlayFit days saw a 57 percent increase of overall attendance 

and a 31 percent increase in paid attendance. 

The Prelude Awards, a partnership between The 

Children’s Museum and the Penrod Society, are a 

dynamic and comprehensive program about learning 

through the arts that celebrates and supports the creativity 

and artistic excellence of high school youth in 

Marion County. Conducted annually for students of the 

arts in Marion County, the 2006 competition recognized 

participants in creative writing, dance, instrumental 

music, theater, video/film, visual arts and vocal music. 

SCHOOL SERVICES AND FAMILY 

PROGRAMS 

In 2006, the museum offered schools a number of new 

programs and experiences tied to national and Indiana 

school standards. However, environmental factors, 

including higher fuel prices and limited financial 

resources, negatively impacted school attendance by 11 

percent over the prior year. The SpaceQuest Planetarium 

gained 28 percent more visitors from schools, and home 

school participation grew slightly. 

Educators continued to become more engaged in the 

museum. Open Houses, preview nights and professional 

development workshops saw a 40 percent 

increase, as did membership in the Teacher Club. 

Family Program offerings included the third annual trip

Giving Back to Our Community: Through the Physical 

and Virtual Campus and Surrounding Neighborhood 

In 2006, work began on the planning stages of Phase II of 

the museum’s campus expansion plans. Guided by the 

Master Campus Planning Working Group of the Board of 

Trustees, a good portion of the year was spent familiarizing 

the staff and working group members with the 

requirements in accessing the Federal Transportation 

Authority grant the museum received in 2005. 

In fourth quarter, enhancements to heighten visitor 

safety and lower vehicular congestion, along with landscape 

improvements to beautify the surrounding neighborhood, 

were fashioned into an initial Request for 

Proposals and published for the response of potential 

architects and engineers in early 2007. 

The facilities and security departments were both reorganized 

in 2006, with new department directors hired in 

both areas. As a result, a 12 percent reduction in facilities 

expenses was realized. Staff uniforms were also introduced 

in these areas, along with Visitor Relations, to 

improve the recognition factor of these important frontline 

staff members. 

Restaurant enhancements were made in 2006 to 

improve customer service and to respond to visitor 

requests for broader offerings and healthier choices. 

INFORMATION AND INTERACTIVE 

TECHNOLOGY 

The museum’s Information Services and Media 

Technology departments were merged in early 2006 to 

form the Information and Interactive Technology 

Department bringing efficiencies in resources in the 

delivery of information across the institution. 

In conjunction with the February opening of Scholastic’s 

The Magic School Bus Kicks Up A Storm, the museum 

announced its receipt of a software donation from 

Microsoft valued at $350,000. The new technology was 

used to upgrade the museum’s software infrastructure 

and aided in the development of interactive media 

throughout the institution. 

The museum’s Web site home page was redesigned in 

2006, giving the 1,505,539 online visitors an updated 

and more dynamic platform from which to plan their 

future visits. 

E-commerce continued to grow as the museum saw 

increased online revenue from ticket sales, membership 

sales, gift certificates sales, school registrations and 

Museum Store sales.

Through Programs and Events 

COMMUNITY INITIATIVES 

The Children’s Museum remained committed to its 

vision of supporting initiatives and programs that 

enhance the quality of life for neighborhood residents 

and further engage them in the life of the museum. In 

2006, guided by the Neighborhood Development 

Working Group, these efforts continued. 

The 30/34 Club — providing free family membership to 

residents living within the five contiguous neighborhoods 

surrounding the museum — saw a record 193 

members as a result of the launch of a formal renewal 

program. 

Instituted in 2004, the Access Pass program provides $1 

admission for individuals on state assistance. In 2006, 

2,978 pass holders participated in this program, representing 

84 Hoosier counties and 17,973 visits. 

Greater cross-departmental collaboration led to addi- 

tional outreach events and activities for neighborhood 

residents. This included more robust programming for 

First Thursday Family Nights, such as the return of Pet 

Awareness Day and programs tied to museum exhibits 

and special events. 

PUBLIC POLICY 

The Children’s Museum Day at the Statehouse provided a 

venue to engage state officials and governmental agencies 

in the programs and activities hosted at the museum 

in 2006. The March event also served as the platform for 

the museum to unveil the results of its most recent 

Economic Impact Study. Boasting a direct, economic 

impact on central Indiana of approximately $58 million 

annually, The Children’s Museum solidified itself as the 

second largest driver of economic impact in the region, 

surpassed only by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 

Additional indicators demonstrated the pride local residents 

hold in the museum and the value it provides to 

the region in driving tourists or leisure travelers to the 

city of Indianapolis.

EVENTS AND RENTALS 

The Events Department had another outstanding year in 

2006, with rental attendance climbing 19 percent over 

2005 and generating $22,000 over plan. Fueled by a 

large number of repeat clients, the sales staff closed the 

year with most of their 2007 sales goals already represented 

by advance bookings. 

The bi-annual Event Showcase in April highlighted 

Fireworks of Glass to attract event and meeting planners 

to the facility. Designed to display the museum’s event 

execution and catering capabilities, each floor of the 

building was dressed to show off the variety of possibilities 

available to clients of all sizes and needs. As weddings 

grew as a percentage of this clientele, revamped 

sales kits and menus were developed to better address 

their needs. 

The birthday party program rebounded after restructuring, 

resulting in 120 percent attendance growth over 

2005 and over $29,000 in incremental revenue. 

Collaboration with marketing and The Children’s 

Museum Store created Birthday Party Gift Registry 

options, and new party themes were created to tie into 

Frontier Presents Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame 

Street? and Bob the Builder — Project: Build It. 

MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS 

Outstanding media coverage of museum exhibits, events 

and activities continued to buoy the resources allocated 

to drive visitation and membership. Audience research 

demonstrated the effectiveness of the 2006 marketing 

campaigns for Fireworks of Glass, Playdate Destination 

and Dinosphere®, supporting paid attendance and 

membership revenue gains. 

More than 258,291,370 people around the world heard 

or read about exhibits and events at the museum in 

2006.The museum garnered local, national and international 

attention with media outlets such as ABC News, 

NBC News, CBS News, Discovery Channel, The New York 

Times, USA Today and The London Times. 

The Children’s Museum was featured in Forbes 

Magazine’s television show broadcast of the Top 10 

Best Places to Live and Work on the Fine Living cable 

network, distributed to over 40 million homes. 

Indianapolis placed 10th on the list and featured on 

the show was an interview with Jeff Patchen and coverage 

of Fireworks of Glass.

Meeting Financial Goals and Investing for the Future 

With oversight from the Finance and Investment 

Committees of the museum’s Board of Trustees, The 

Children’s Museum continues to provide strong fiscal 

oversight of the organization’s annual budget and 

endowment. In 2006, the museum’s endowment growth 

was 11 percent.The net change in endowment was 6.4 

percent over 2005, reaching a record high of 

$281,138,000 at year-end. The operating budget ended 

the year with a surplus of $314,350 — returning 

$300,000 to the endowment to support The Power of 

Children Campaign. 

Under the leadership of a new department Vice 

President, the Development Department garnered 

increased contribution income in the categories of corporate 

donations and foundation support. 

The Children’s Museum was selected to benefit from the 

Tiffany & Co. exclusive Keys for a Cause fundraiser in 

September. Special guests were invited to purchase keys 

to unlock cases filled with Tiffany treasures, including fine 

jewelry, watches, silver and crystal, with the proceeds 

from the purchase of the keys benefiting the museum. 

This unique partnership generated $6,400 to support the 

museum’s annual fund. 

Fundraising for The Power of Children Campaign in 2006 

generated an additional $3.5 million. These gifts 

included $1 million from Deborah Simon; $275,000 from 

the National Endowment for the Humanities; and 

$250,000 from the Duke Energy Foundation to support 

The Power of Children Exhibit. The Ruth Lilly 

Philanthropy Fund provided $500,000 to support Global 

Perspectives; and $500,000 from the Allen Whitehall 

Clowes Charitable Foundation in support of the Phase II 

Master Campus Plan. Additional gifts received for special 

projects included $520,000 from Health Care Excel for 

Health House and $500,000 from Dow AgroSciences in 

support of SciencePort.
