THIS IS THE ‘TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT’ PAGE!
Suggested local alternatives to common beer brands from global manufacturers
Do you regularly stick with the same brand of mass-produced beer irregardless of what other choices are
available? Why not be adventurous for once and try a locally-brewed, fresher, craft alternative? Here are
some suggestions – all of which are brewed within 300 miles of New York City. You never know, you may
prefer the local brew – and you’ll have the added bonus of knowing you’re supporting local craftsmanship
and the local economy rather than funding giant corporations…
PBR, Budweiser, Miller, or Coors (inc. Light) from the can: try Sly Fox Pikeland Pils, New England
Elm City Lager, and Brooklyn Lager (draft & cans).
Corona, Budweiser, Michelob, Miller, or Coors (inc. Light) from the bottle: try Brooklyn Lager, Victory
Prima Pils, Blue Point Toasted Lager, Smuttynose Portsmouth Lager, and Samuel Adams Boston
Lager.
Stella Artois, Heineken, Beck’s, Kronenbourg 1664, Spaten Lager, or Harp: try Victory Prima Pils,
Brooklyn Lager, Kelso Hop Lager, Sly Fox Pikeland Pils, and Shmaltz Coney Island Lager.
Bass, Boddington’s, Smithwick’s, Whitbread Pale Ale, Old Speckled Hen, or Abbot Ale: try
Butternuts Pork Slap (draft & cans), Sly Fox Phoenix Pale Ale (draft & cans), Captain Lawrence
Freshchester Pale Ale, Brooklyn Ale/Pennant Pale Ale, Chelsea Standard Ale, Victory Uncle Teddy’s,
Blue Point ESB, and Stoudt’s Scarlet Lady.
Hoegaarden or Blue Moon: try Ommegang Witte, Victory Whirlwind Wit, Brooklyn Blanche de
Brooklyn, Weyerbacher Blanche, Magic Hat Circus Boy, Long Trail Belgian White, Southampton
Double White Ale, Butternuts Heinnieweisse (draft & cans), and Legacy Midnight Wit.
Newcastle Brown Ale or Leffe Brune: try Sixpoint Brownstone, Brooklyn Brown Ale, Ipswich Dark
Ale, Chelsea Nut Brown Ale, Troegs Rugged Trail, Ithaca Nut Brown, and Smuttynose Old Brown
Dog.
Leffe Blonde: try Sixpoint Sweet Action, Chelsea Checker Cab, and Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold.
Killian’s Irish Red: try Thomas Hooker Irish Red, Chelsea Sunset Red, and Legacy Hedonism Ale.
Guinness or Beamish: try Ipswich Oatmeal Stout, Victory Donnybrook Stout, Sixpoint Otis, Chelsea
Gotham Stout/Cream Stout/Black Hole XXX Stout, Blue Point Oatmeal Stout, Sly Fox O’Reilly’s
Stout, and Captain Lawrence Smoked Porter. Also, in any of the Heartland Brewery pubs, try Heartland
Farmer Jon’s Oatmeal Stout.
The general message is that it’s a win-win situation for all except voracious
corporations if you support the art, skill, and diversity of true craft brewing
over the tsunami of tasteless, mass-produced, homogenized beer that
threatens to wash away our newly rediscovered brewing heritage.
