Subway: 23 rd Street Whole Foods Market 10 Columbus Circle. Tel: 1 212 823 9600. Part of the grocery chain, this store stocks a range of craft beers. Subway: 59 th Street – Columbus Circle North of East 23 rd Street to East 66 th Street Midtown (east), including Grand Central Station Bars & Restaurants Blue Smoke 116 East 27 th Street (between Park Avenue South and Lexington Avenue). Tel: 1 212 447 7479. Midtown restaurant-bar with a decent range. Jazz Standard music venue is in the same building. Subway: 28 th Street CB Six Bar CASK ALE [G] 252 East 51 st Street (just west of 2 nd Avenue). Tel: 1 212 888 2453. An excellent beer bar offering 16 taps (all but a couple being craft beer) and over 80 bottles. Opens at 3pm in the week, 4pm weekends (may change to opening earlier). Occasional gravity casks. The Ginger Man CASK ALE [H] [G] 11 East 36 th Street (between 5 th and Madison Avenues). Tel: 1 212 532 3740. Two cask handpumps and a vast selection of draught and bottled beers feature here. Deservedly popular and walkable from both Grand Central and Penn rail stations; The Ginger Man is close to The Empire State Building, which can be seen through the front windows. Beware of busy times, it often fills to capacity. A third cask ale, on gravity, is tapped every Wednesday. Now doing growler fills. Opening hours: Mon-Wed 11.30am- 2am, Thurs-Fri 11.30am-4am, Sat 12.30pm-4am, Sun 3pm-4am. Subway: 34 th Street or 33 rd Street Resto 111 East 29 th Street (between Park Avenue South and Lexington Avenue). Tel: 1 212 685 5585. A restaurant with an excellent selection of Belgian bottles and some good Belgian beers on tap. Closes in the afternoon between 3pm and 5pm. Not cheap. Subway: 28 th Street Waterfront Ale House CASK ALE [G] 540 2 nd Avenue (at East 30 th Street). Tel: 1 212 696 4104. The sister pub of the Waterfront in Brooklyn, similarly enterprising with the beer range. Very highly recommended. Open from 11.30am daily. Mostly mass-produced beer on the taps but there are several good bottles, mainly imports. Pricey. Closed Sundays and also Saturday daytime. Worth a visit: Maggie’s Place, 21 East 47 th Street (at Madison Avenue). Worth a visit: Tabla, 11 Madison Avenue (at East 25 th Street). Elegant restaurant. Beer Stores None listed for this area, except note that The Ginger Man (see above) is now doing growler fills. Bars & Restaurants Above West 66 th Street Upper West Side and Harlem (west) Broadway Dive 2662 Broadway (at West 101 st Street). Tel: 1 212 865 2662. Part of a small chain of three ‘Dives’ featuring good beer in the Upper West Side. Open from noon daily. Subway: 103 rd Street Dinosaur Bar-B-Que 646 West 131 st Street (at 12 th Avenue). Tel: 1 212 694 1777. A large, barn-like corner restaurant on the western extremities of Harlem. Several craft beers on tap make this an oasis in the far-uptown beer desert. There is seating at the bar for non-diners. Tasting flights are available. Beware of frosted glasses - if you want to actually taste your beer, request a room temperature glass on ordering.
