NO FAT IN BE.E.R
As people strive to lose a few pounds, research Weghtwalchers, and a pint ofa e has the same
swapp ng ffom wine to beerforjustone week descdbe a baked polalo astallening. So why do
could save as rnanycalories as a haf-hourjogl
This was back n 2010.
people who drink beersetfal (because yes
sorne of them me as a case in point - do)?
Now new research frorn the British Beer and
Pub Associaiion (BBPA)ln 2012 has backed I
We , you wolldn'l have a nice dinner and then
go out afterwards and eatfive or sx baked
there are more calories in beer than there Its allabout moderalion the beer itsell is not
actua ly is. In facl, the opposite is lrue and, when
drunk n moderalion, beercan help you to lose
and over ume itwillstarl to show
In a ha f pint of beef a 3.8% ABV lhefe are only
''Its greatlo see lhe m!,ih ofthe beer belly being
Too many consumers, particulafly women, have
been discoulaged frcm drink ng beer bec€use of
concerns lhat it is moreiallening than wine bul
nowwe know that ihe opposite s true. We hope
this rcsearch by CAl,lRA in 2010 and ilfo ow-up
research buy BBPA now in 2012 makes more
people reallse that beer is relalvely low in
a cohol and calories - bul is still packed with a
ianlastic amount of favour.
The major source ofca odes in anyalcoho c
drlnk is the alcoholitself, and because beef is
the drinks categorywith the lowesl average
alcoholcontent I is also owest n calories. Beer
also contains no fat or clrolesierol and very few
free sugats. So forsomeone looking to lose
weighl, swapping thek g ass oiwine for a beef
every daywould notonly reduce ftenweekly
alcoho intake by seven units but also cutout
more caories than are burned oflduring a
Around Barnsley i_n 80 Beers
Beers 17 to 20
Having drunk some wonderful beers in 16 outlets before this blog, I was looking
forward to my next outing, and I wasn t disappointed. Some well known beers with the
odd surprlsing guest beer and a cracking Eelgium beer in this edition.
My summer outings around Barnsley
brought me to Stairfoot, here on Grange
Lane stands the Black Bull-
A long one-roomed locals' community
pub. I say one room, though the games
room is nearly another room. The pub is
happlly offering a single changing real
ale week on week. lt varies in both
character and
strength. On one of my latest visits I was delighted to find
Caledonian Coffee Porter at 4.3% abv.
This poder was a red/brown, and as I hoped, the coffee
jumped straighl out from the outset. The afoma was coffee
and chocolate. These car ed through in the taste too, with
hints offruit and brown sugar. This beer was great, so I
had to have a second.
Food Matching - This beerwould go wellwith barbecued
meats and/or a chocolate dessert.
Catch the number 1 bus out oftown
and in around 8 to10 minutes you'll
be at the junction to N,,lapplewell and
Staincross- Here stands the Eastfield
Arms. This pub offers both the
community and passing trade a
choice ofgood value food and drinks.
The pub has a choice ofthree feal
ales, and today my beer choice was
from
Marston s
brewery.
l\,4arston's English Pale Ale.
Marston's EPA at 3.6% abv . IVarston's have this thing
EPA
about EPA having a zing, and I must admit, I think it does.
For a 3.6% strength the hoppy and yes citrus "zing" really
works, this style of beer was all the fashion in the Victorian ENCLISH PALE ALE
era and I think this easy drinking crisp refreshing beer has
a place for the modern drinker 100 vears later.
Food Matching - Excellent with vegetable soup, quiches e.----s'+-a
or mild cheese ploughman s.
