Volume XXXV, Number 7 February 2012
Dear Friends,
The month of February begins with the celebration
of Catholic Schools Week. Each year the recognition
of our Catholic Schools provides us with an
opportunity to show our appreciation to parents,
students, staff, parishes, alumni, and the entire
community.
I feel very blessed to be working at Roncalli and
with the Catholic Schools and parishes in our region.
In my life the blessing is to be able to weave my
faith, family, friendships, and profession together.
My prayer for each student and each family is that
you embrace the many opportunities that are
available for your:
Spiritual Growth
Life Long Service
Academic Excellence
I encourage you to celebrate and support our
Catholic Schools not only during the week of
January 29 – February 5, but to seize the opportunity
to celebrate our schools and all that they offer each
day.
Please join Roncalli and many of our regional
Catholic Schools on Friday, February 3, for a
“Catholic Schools Week” Liturgical Celebration.
The Mass will begin at 12:30 p.m.
May God bless you, your family, and our common
faith.
Sincerely,
John Stelzer
Financial Aid for College
Students applying for financial aid need to file a Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Paper
forms are only available from the website. It is highly
recommended that you complete this on-line at
www.fafsa.ed.gov since there is a check and balance
system in place. There are FAFSA on the web worksheets
available to assist you. Before filing this form, both
student and parent will need to obtain a pin number at
www.pin.ed.gov. If parents already have a pin number
from a previous student, they do not need to obtain a new
number. Check deadlines at the financial aid office at
your college.
Financial Aid Events at U.W. Manitowoc
 College Goal Sunday – February 19 at 2:00 –
4:00. This free event is designed to address the
needs of low-income and first-generation college
students who are completing and submitting the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA). To get more information and a list of
what to bring with you, visit
www.collegegoalwi.org! It is free to attend, but
please call (920) 683-4707 to reserve your spot.
Fill Out Your FAFSA Night – Tuesday, March 6
at 6:00 – Parents and students can bring in their
tax forms and get assistance with filling out the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA).
Seniors
Do your seniors know that slacking off during the spring
semester or after being accepted to college may
jeopardize their future plans? According to the College
Board, every year, colleges rescind offers of admission,
put students on academic probation, or alter financial
aid packages as a result of "senioritis." Often, college
acceptance letters include warnings to students such as,
“Your admission is contingent on your continued
successful performance.” Admissions officers can ask a
student to explain a drop in grades and can revoke an
offer of admission if not satisfied with the response. Since
colleges do not receive final grades until June, students
may not hear about this until July when there are few
options left. The best advice is to stay focused and keep
up your grades.
Remember to pay strict attention to housing deposits and
deadlines. Each college has their own regulations
regarding housing. Please sign up on time to ensure your
spot.
Scholarships – There are new scholarships coming in on a
regular basis. Seniors should check the scholarship board
or look on our website for updates.
ACT
It is highly recommended that juniors take the ACT in the
spring of their junior year.
Test Dates Registration Deadlines
April 14, 2012 March 9, 2012
June 9, 2012 May 4, 2012
When registering, you will be asked to sign up for the
ACT assessment or the ACT assessment plus writing.
U.W. Madison and Marquette are the only two schools in
Wisconsin that require the writing portion. If you have
any questions about whether or not to take the optional
writing portion, please see Mrs. Nickels or check the
ACT website at www.actstudent.org. You can also
register on this website. It is recommended that students
select colleges to have their scores sent to when they
register for the ACT to avoid paying an extra fee later.
Individual Planning Conferences – Sophomores and their
parents can schedule Individual Planning Conferences
with Mrs. Nickels. The focus is on the student’s current
talents, abilities, interests, as well as his/her educational
and career development. You will also be given
information to begin planning for your student’s future in
a positive atmosphere. Sophomore parents will be
emailed information on setting up a conference
appointment.
We love our library donors! Thanks so
much to all of the wonderful people who sent “Christmas
presents” to the library. We really appreciate your
thoughtfulness and generosity.
Pierside Plaza Auction
It’s that time of year again when preparations for the
annual Pierside Plaza Auction are in full swing. Mark
your calendars: Saturday, April 28, 2012, for an evening
of fun, meeting new people, and seeing old friends. The
auction is Roncalli’s largest fundraiser. All profits go
right back into school operations. As a result of this
auction, each student experiences, on average, a $650
tuition reduction.
Ways you can help the Roncalli Auction:
1. Buy a raffle ticket! Who doesn’t need cold, hard cash!!
The grand prize is $10,000 with one additional $2000
winner, two $1,000 winners, and two $500 winners. The
cost of a raffle ticket is $100, and only 500 tickets will be
sold. Go in alone or together with family or friends. Last
year was the first time ever that the raffle tickets were
sold out before auction night. Buy your ticket early and
help make this year’s auction just as successful. (Link to
raffle ticket online)
2. Put together a Basket. It is so much fun to put together
a theme basket for the basket booth. Pick an idea like
Packers, Taste of Manitowoc, Wintry Family Night
Inside, or Outdoor Activities. Have friends or other
members of your family chip in. There’s nothing to it!
3. Collegiate Booth. Please don’t forget to bring in a
sweatshirt or a t-shirt from your alma mater or the college
your kids attend! They are great money-makers, and we
love receiving them.
4. Blessed Crosses Booth. Any religious item that has a
cross on it is welcome in this booth. They will be blessed
before the auction begins. Crosses from around the world
are especially welcome.
5. Any donation--an item, sporting tickets, or cash. We
have 13 silent auction booths and an oral auction. Some
items are purchased and cash is always needed.
P.S. The items that you donate need to be new and unused
unless they are a collectible or an antique.
Lasallian Youth
During the month of January, the students at Roncalli
were asked to donate clothing, toys, and other items for
Americans Serving African Children, a local non-profit
organization. More than 15 large shipping containers
were filled with new and gently used clothing and toys
for the people in Tanzania, Uganda, Bulenga, and Kenya.
The cost of shipping the items is taken care of by the
Salvatorian Brothers in New Holstein. On Tuesday,
January 24, Lasallian Youth sold 50/50 raffle tickets at
the boys’ basketball game versus Wrightstown. This
money was also donated to the Africa communities for
things such as purchasing cows for milk, repairing
schools, and building water towers. The ASAC project
will culminate with the 3 rd Annual Pancake Breakfast on
Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, from 7:30 a.m.--Noon at
St. Francis of Assisi on Grand. Come to Mass and
afterwards enjoy breakfast before the big game. You will
be donating to a wonderful cause.
On Friday, January 20, nineteen of our students travelled
to Oshkosh for a day of service at Fr. Carr’s Place 2B, a
homeless shelter for men, women, and children. The
shelter also has a food pantry and a free health and dental
clinic. Our students celebrated mass with Fr. Dave at the
shelter and then set out in different directions to do
service work. Some students worked in the food pantry
while others cleaned rooms, made beds, washed
windows, and sorted through boxes of donations. It is
always a rewarding day knowing that we have helped an
organization that reflects the work of Christ whose
mission is from Matthew 25:31-46, “For I was hungry
and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you
gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you
invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was
sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you
came to visit me.”
