New Student Orientation
WelcomeGuide 2011

From The President
Dear New student,
You are beginning a great adventure at a university that prides itself on offering
an academically rigorous program in an educational context that supports the full
and complete development of the whole person.
Studies show that the first six weeks of college are critical to your overall
success. Those critical weeks begin soon with New Student Orientation; take full
advantage of the orientation program to acquaint yourself with your classmates,
the campus, and the spectacular City of San Francisco. Do not absent yourself
from any part of the orientation program; to do so would only deny yourself the
knowledge and experience you need to do well at USF.
These days of introduction have been carefully put together to help you
succeed, but understand that USF does not define success narrowly. The mission
of the University is to offer you the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as
a person, that is, to be a person for and with others. At USF we do not measure
success in terms of “treasure on earth that moths consume and rust destroys
and thieves can break in and steal” [Matthew 6:19]. Success at USF is gauged not
by how much you have but by how you contribute to the fashioning of a more
humane and just world for all.
Finally, I call your attention to the fact that USF “offers,” it does not “force
feed.” Ultimately, education is your responsibility. No one can read, reflect,
question or risk for you. You, and only you, do your learning; that’s your job for
the next four years. Do it well and you will enjoy the full benefits of a college
education — a benefit denied to 90% of the people in our world. When you are
discouraged or overwhelmed, take the time to imagine how many billions of
people in this world can only dream about being where you are. When you feel
lost, stop and ask for directions. We are all here to help!
Welcome to the Jesuit University of San Francisco and to a great adventure,
which holds much promise for you and for a world that desperately needs persons
with sharp minds, warm hearts and willing hands.
Sincerely,
Stephen A. Privett, S.J.
President

usf reading project
“Every place deserves an atlas, an atlas is
at least implicit in every place, and to say
that is to ask first of all what a place is.”
- Rebecca Solnit
The Reading Project introduces you to the intellectual life and educational
mission at USF. The project promotes critical thinking and cultural engagement
around a current topic and provides a common experience for all new USF students.
Every year the entire university community—administrators, faculty, staff,
students—is invited to participate in the Reading Project. The book may also be
assigned in your first-year writing and other courses. New Student Orientation
events become an integral part of your first semester coursework.
The Reading Project for the Incoming Class of 2011 is Infinite City:
A San Francisco Atlas by Rebecca Solnit. Solnit and her collaborators
create maps to share the infinite stories and histories of San Francisco,
your new home. Each author’s sense of place is revealed, showing the
diverse cities within San Francisco. As the newest members of our USF
community, you will map your lives here and contribute to the many
stories on our campus and beyond.
Before you arrive on campus in August get a copy of the book, immerse
yourself, and enjoy. We hope Solnit’s unique work will inspire you as you
map out your own upcoming journey to USF. For more information on
USF’s summer reading program visit: www.usfca.edu/orientation.
Rebecca Solnit is the best-selling author of many books, including River of Shadows,
for which she won the National Book Critics Circle Award, A Paradise Built in Hell,
Savage Dreams (UC Press), and Storming the Gates of Paradise (UC Press).
Visit your professors during
office hours. professors love
to hear from their students,
especially to talk about their
field. Talking to your professor
means you will get the right
kind of help, you’ll get
valuable advice for your
it will help you learn.
resIDeNtIAL stuDeNts
Part of the educational experience at USF involves
each student learning to balance personal needs with
shared responsibilities, and individual rights with
the common good. In order to live and lead in a
community environment that you will share with a
roommate and several other peers, you will partner
with your roommates, neighbors and residence life
Students Living off campus
As a USF student who does not live in Universityoperated
you with a different set of challenges. There are many
ways you can find a sense of belonging at USF. For
example, you could join a club or a study group; go to
campus events; meet classmates for meals on campus;
get an on-campus job; find a lounge where you
can relax and do homework between classes; and
participate in the Koret Health and Recreation
nationwide, four out of five college students commute
to campus. With a little extra effort, you can get the
Families of New Students
Going to college is both a new beginning and a
continuation of your student’s life journey. Although
students are now young adults, families will continue to
play a valuable role in their growth and development.
As a family member of a first-year student, the transition
to college can be as stressful, emotional, and challenging
for you as it is for your student.
For these reasons, we think it is important for
families who are able to make the trip this summer to
come to New Student Orientation. We are pleased to
offer special programs and services to help ease your
family’s transition.
Families of International Students: We hope
you can visit San Francisco for the New Student
The Fogcutter is the official student handbook for the University of
San Francisco and can be found online at www.usfca.edu/fogcutter.
This publication has been designed to be a resource for all USF community
members and may be updated or revised throughout the academic year.
We suggest new students and family members bookmark the site and check
back periodically for the most current updates, as it provides information
on programs, services, policies and procedures. All USF students must read
the Fogcutter, as they need to be aware of, understand, and adhere to these
policies and procedures. Reading the Fogcutter will be the best start on the
path to success at the University of San Francisco.
