Introduction ix
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The editor began studying Ngizim in 1969-70, working mainly
with the late Malam Dan Boyi Kwana and Malam Adamu Helman
Sale Ngwajin. The contributions of these two men made possible the
writing of A Dictionary of Ngizim, published in 1981. Malam Adamu
in particular wrote hundreds of pages of stories, history, and proverbs
from which most of the words in that dictionary came. Ngizim
research in 1969-70 was funded by a US National Science Foundation
grant (award #2279, Paul Newman, Principal Investigator). The
production of the FIRST EDITION of the Ngizim-English-Hausa
Dictionary was supported from 2002-2004 by a grant from the US
National Science Foundation (award #BCS-0111289, Russell G.
Schuh, Principal Investigator). Publication of the FIRST EDITION was
supported by generous contributions from Alhaji Isa Bello (Walin
Pataskum, Deputy Speaker), Alhaji Ibrahim Umar (Hon.
Commissioner), Alhaji Yakubu Mai Hassan (Permanent Secretary of
Works), Alhaji Muhammadu Guza (Wazirin Pataskum), Alhaji
Adamu Sale (General Manager, YOSAMA), Alhaji Muhammadu
Dakasku (Deputy Permanent Secretary), Alhaji Abdu Parapara, Alhaji
Abdullahi Garin Daye, Alhaji Hassan Bula (Councellor, Emirate
Council), Malam Dala Ibrahim (Council Secretary), Hon. Baba
Gishuwari, and Senator Mamman Ali.
This SECOND EDITION has been compiled by the authors and editor
with the support of a grant from the US National Science Foundation
(award #BCS-05553222, Russell G. Schuh, Principal Investigator).
Alhaji Maina Gimba has been In-Country Director of both projects.
The authors and the editor would like to thank HRH Mai
Pataskum, Alhaji Umaru Bubaram, and the Potiskum Emirate Council
for their continued support of this project. Special thanks go to Malam
Madu Liman, Registrar of the College of Education Zuba, Abuja, and
to Halima Madu Liman and members of the Madu Liman household,
for indispensable logistic support without which the project would
have been difficult if not impossible. Thanks also to Alhaji Ali Goni
and to Malam Saleh Adamu for helping to create a smooth working
environment. For technical contributions, thanks go to Jeffrey Heinz
and Sarah Foxe of the UCLA Linguistics Department. Roger Blench
