City of Beloit hands out annual
Industrial Environmental Awards
BELOIT — The City of Beloit presented a
number of awards May 13, during its
Industrial Environmental Awards for 2007 banquet.
Genencor International, Hormel and Frito
Lay were among the local companies to receive
recognition (see related graphic).
Beloit City Council President James Van De
Bogart opened the meeting and Helen Forbeck,
field representative for U.S. Congresswoman
Tammy Baldwin, was the featured speaker.
Forbeck focused her discussion on energy,
going green and being green. She outlined, that
with bipartisan support, Baldwin successfully
added language to improve industrial and
home energy efficiency standards, encouraged
advanced battery and plug-in hybrid programs,
minimize exposure to mercury in energy efficient
light bulbs, and study the adequacy of
railroad transportation for domestically produced
renewable fuel.
Bob Weimer of Alliant Energy gave an
overview of the company’s Beloit plant, used as
a backup facility, and the Blackhawk plant
located between Beloit and Janesville. He
reported that demand in the service area has
been increasing approximately 2 to 3 percent a
year. Weimer discussed planned improvements
to the plants that will have the flexibility to
burn alternative fuels such as swithgrass, corn
stover and wood; reducing reliance on coal.
Weimer said Alliant is committed to producing
affordable energy, using new technology
and reduced emissions, and has committed $1
billion for new wind farms.
Kettle Foods also gave a presentation on
their Beloit facility. Built in 2007, the Gold
LEED certified facility in Beloit, also received
an Environmental Innovation award this
month from the Wisconsin Business Friends of
the Environment.
City of Beloit officials also provided information
on three additional topics, wastewater
treatment plant capacity, an Environmental
Protection Agency Region V perspective and
new pollutants of concern-pharmaceutical and
gave an update on road and building construction
projects in Beloit.
The awards banquet was held at La Casa
Grande in Beloit.
