Get out and enjoy winter bliss
Around Lake of Bays
By Judy Vanclieaf
The outdoor
rink in Dorset,
better known as
the Dorset Ice
Palace, is now
open for the
winter season.
The Ice Palace is
open to the
public throughout
the day,
with floodlights illuminating the ice
from dusk till 9 p.m. There is also a
heated change room beside the rink
that is available during the open
hours. Why not come out and skate
under the stars?
I am delighted to tell you that the
16 February 2010 www.whatsupmuskoka.com
SS Bigwin now has a new propeller
and rudder. In January the crew at
the Lake of Bays Marine Museum
installed a 38-inch bronze propeller,
with steel propeller shaft and rudder.
The folks at the Lake of Bays Marine
Museum have also informed me that
they received a grant from FedNor
for $380,000. The grant is awarded
based upon matched funds from the
museum to be used for the restoration
of the SS Bigwin. Congratulations
are in order on this grant.
Although they have received this
grant, fundraising and donations are
still needed to complete the restoration.
The museum is still looking for
donations so the SS Bigwin can be
launched into Lake of Bays on her
100th birthday this summer.
The people of Dorset and Dwight
are busy preparing for their winter
carnivals, which will both take place
in February. Going to a winter carnival
is a great way to help break up
the long season while enjoying the
spirit of each community.
The Dorset Snowball Winter Carnival
will be held on the weekend of
Feb. 19-20. The fun begins on Friday
evening with a family skate at the
Dorset Skating Palace (the outdoor
rink).
On Saturday there will be a pancake
breakfast and a parade, as well as
horse-drawn wagon rides and many
more events that will happen
throughout the day. And don’t forget
to try out a hot moose tongue by the
fire hall. It makes my mouth water
just thinking about it. Be sure to purchase
your $3 Snowball button at any
of the local merchants, as you do
need one to participate.
Also, the organizers of the Dwight
Winter Carnival will be celebrating
their 40th year of fun in the snow. It
will take place the following weekend
of Feb. 25-27.
Starting on the Thursday there will
be a princess pageant at the community
centre for girls up to Grade 8.
Friday will bring nighttime shinny on
the rink and Saturday will be full of
fun activities starting off with a pancake
breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10:30
am. The Muskoka Wildlife Centre
will be on hand with their little crit-
ters and horse-drawn sleigh rides will
be available. You can enter the
Dwight Idol karaoke contest or go
for dog sled rides. The whole weekend
is packed with fun-filled activities
for everyone to enjoy. And why
not top the night off with the carnival
dance at 8 pm at the community
centre.
Across the lake in Baysville, the
Lake of Bays Brewery is moving right
along with their plans of opening in
May. The vessels arrived on Jan. 18
and Darren’s crew have been busy
hooking it up and getting things
ready for the first hot water run.
From here on in, progress will visibly
faster and it will be no time at all
that we will be able to go in and sample
some beer.
On a sad note, Baysville is saddened
by the loss of Nellie Gray who
left us Jan. 18. The funeral was held
at Reynolds Funeral Home on Friday,
Jan. 23. Nellie’s family, Spring,
Veronica, Darla, Randy and Calvin
would like to thank friends and the
community of Baysville. They were
shown so much kindness the last few
weeks of Nellie’s illness leading up to
her passing. We will miss you Nell.
