A record-breaking
auction
The third annual Presidents’ Club auction, held in one of Manhattan’s party spaces, Cipriani 42nd Street, was a
rousing success. The event raised a record-breaking $187,000 by offering an eclectic selection of coveted
items. There were tickets to sporting events and performances, trips to islands and mountains, bottles of wine,
rounds of golf, pieces of jewelry and art, and a chance to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange
on Colgate Day. All of the items were donated — and bid on — by alumni, parents, and friends who are members
of the Presidents’ Club.
But furniture stole the show. A circa 1870 pool table from the Phi Gamma Delta house pocketed $11,000 for
Colgate University and the Phi Gamma Delta Scholarship Fund, while the Dalai Lama’s chair — which had been
warmed by the exiled leader during Colgate’s Global Leaders Lecture Series and related events just weeks before —
left the university sitting pretty with $25,000 in the bank.
