ESL Picnic About thirty-five students, parents, and teachers were in attendance at the annual ESL International Night meal on Tuesday, May 24. For this year’s event, we changed the venue and program from a pitch-in meal at Brookville High School’s cafeteria to a less-formal cookout at the playground of Yellow Branch Elementary School. Hotdogs, drinks, and dessert were provided, and parents brought their favorite dishes to share with other families. The relaxed picnic atmosphere with camp chairs and blankets allowed the children to play ball and enjoy the playground equipment while adults caught up on news from their students’ teachers, and met newcomers. The grand finale of the meal was make-your-own ice cream sundaes, with a large variety of toppings from which to choose. Door-prizes were given out just before our evening came to a close due to the threat of rain moving in to the area. Thanks to these Brookville High School students for their assistance in putting together the invitation for our dinner: Seokjin Cho, cover art, lettering, and Korean translation; Vicki Sun, Chinese translation; David Suh, Spanish translation. Represented that evening were speakers of Spanish, Tagalog, and Korean, although our Campbell County population includes students from many more countries. 2 Calendar for 2011 - 2012 The Campbell County School Board has approved the calendar for the 2011 – 2012 school year. Please check the calendar as you plan for out-of-town events that involve your student(s). Please note the following important dates: August 22 First day of School Sept.5 Labor Day (schools closed) Nov. 8 Election Day (schools closed) Nov. 23-25 Thanksgiving Holiday (schools closed) Dec. 21 – Jan. 2 Christmas Holiday (schools closed) Jan. 13 Lee/Jackson Day (schools closed) Jan. 16 MLK Day (schools closed) April 09-13 Spring Break (schools closed) May 28 Memorial Day (schools closed) Parents, we need your help. Hopefully, with this advance notice, you can make your vacation/travel plans to coincide with the above dates. Thank you in advance for your help with this important matter. Please remember, for planned absences (ex. college visits, family trips, etc) a letter must be presented from a parent/guardian 2 days prior to the date of the absence. If approved by the principal, the student will be given a pre-arranged form to be signed by all teachers.
Personal Belongings in Student Lockers T he last day of school is Wednesday, June 8. Our custodial staff will begin to clean out lockers immediately after the last day of school. We will not be responsible for any personal belongings left in student lockers or PE lockers. Please encourage your students to clean out their lockers before June 8, 2011. Do You Know Someone New to the Area? I f you are aware of someone who is planning to move into the BHS attendance area this summer, please encourage them to call BHS at 239-2636 to arrange an appointment with a counselor. In order to enroll a student, you must accompany your student for the registration process. You must bring the following documents: Proof of residence (utility bill, lease, etc) Unofficial transcript from former school or report cards from previous years Social Security Number Birth Certificate Test Scores Any other documents such as custody papers, special programs, etc. Immunization records 3 Retirees Brookville High School has three teachers retiring. This year we will say good bye and wish a “happy retirement” to Mrs. Sandy Baker, Mrs. Diane Cornelison and Mr. Don Reid. Mrs. Baker began her 34 year journey at Leesville Road Elementary in 1971. After 17 years at LRES, the Baker family relocated and she taught special ed at Indianapolis Public Schools. In 1994, the Bakers relocated to Cairo, Egypt. While there, she substituted at the American school and volunteered at a clinic washing Egyptian babies. She finally came back home to Lynchburg and for the past ten years, Mrs. Baker has enjoyed the challenge of high school students at BHS and has now taught every grade level. She has been blessed as multiple generations of students return to visit and want to share the impact she had on their lives. Mrs. Cornelison began teaching biology at William Campbell High School in 1995. After 2 years of teaching three levels of biology, one chemistry class was added. The following year, it was all Chemistry I and II. She transferred to Brookville where she has had the most amazing groups of students. She frequently hears from former students taking a college chemistry class, telling her how much they remember (or don’t remember) from high school or asking how to work a problem! Mr. Reid came to Campbell County in 1970. He transferred to Brookville in 1973 where he has played a huge part in many of the students lives. All three of these exceptional teachers will be greatly missed by the faculty and staff at Brookville High School. We wish you all much happiness in your retirement years!
