S
eniors are to arrive at the Vine Center at
Liberty University at 10:45 am on June
10 for a mandatory graduation practice.
The graduation ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm
at the Vine Center, Liberty University, on June
10.

News from the School Nurse
The end of the school year is in sight and
so it is time for those “policy” reminders!
Parents must pick up any remaining
medications by the last day of school,
otherwise items will be destroyed. This
includes over the counter and prescription
medications. Students with signed IHCP’s may
pick up and transport inhalers, epipens and
diabetic supplies on the last day of school.
Individual Health Care Plans are renewed at
the beginning of EACH SCHOOL YEAR.
Some medical practices charge additional fees
if the form is not brought to the appointment
time for completion. The forms are available
online and at the school for you to get prior to
summer time appointments.
Spring Choral Concert
The BHS Choral Department will present
its final concert for the year “From Opera
to Broadway” on Wednesday, May 25 at
7:00 pm in the auditorium. Tickets are $3 for all
ages. A very talented group of seniors will be
the featured soloists: Scott Baker, Leah
Durham, Laura Glickman, Nish Christian,
Laura Demoret, Katie Nunn, Tearra Small,
Olivia Thompson, Aliisa Mann, and Shanice
Eubank.

ESL Picnic
About thirty-five students, parents, and
teachers were in attendance at the annual ESL
International Night meal on Tuesday, May 24.
For this year’s event, we changed the venue
and program from a pitch-in meal at Brookville
High School’s cafeteria to a less-formal
cookout at the playground of Yellow Branch
Elementary School.
Hotdogs, drinks, and dessert were provided,
and parents brought their favorite dishes to
share with other families. The relaxed picnic
atmosphere with camp chairs and blankets
allowed the children to play ball and enjoy the
playground equipment while adults caught up
on news from their students’ teachers, and met
newcomers. The grand finale of the meal was
make-your-own ice cream sundaes, with a
large variety of toppings from which to choose.
Door-prizes were given out just before our
evening came to a close due to the threat of
rain moving in to the area.
Thanks to these Brookville High School
students for their assistance in putting together
the invitation for our dinner: Seokjin Cho, cover
art, lettering, and Korean translation; Vicki Sun,
Chinese translation; David Suh, Spanish
translation. Represented that evening were
speakers of Spanish, Tagalog, and Korean,
although our Campbell County population
includes students from many more countries.

calendar as you plan for out-of-town
events that involve your student(s).

Parents, we need your help. Hopefully,
with this advance notice, you can make your
vacation/travel plans to coincide with the above
dates. Thank you in advance for your help with
this important matter. Please remember, for
planned absences (ex. college visits, family
trips, etc) a letter must be presented from a
parent/guardian 2 days prior to the date of the
absence. If approved by the principal, the
student will be given a pre-arranged form to be
signed by all teachers.

Personal Belongings in
Student Lockers
T
he last day of school is Wednesday,
June 8. Our custodial staff will begin to
clean out lockers immediately after the
last day of school. We will not be
responsible for any personal
belongings left in student lockers or PE
lockers. Please encourage your students to
clean out their lockers before June 8, 2011.

to the Area?
I
f you are aware of someone who is planning
to move into the BHS attendance area this
summer, please encourage them to call
BHS at 239-2636 to arrange an appointment
with a counselor. In order to enroll a student,
you must accompany your student for the
registration process. You must bring the
following documents:
Proof of residence (utility bill, lease, etc)
Unofficial transcript from former school
or report cards from previous years
Social Security Number
Birth Certificate
Test Scores
Any other documents such as custody
papers, special programs, etc.
Immunization records

Retirees
Brookville High School has three teachers
retiring. This year we will say good bye
and wish a “happy retirement” to Mrs.
Sandy Baker, Mrs. Diane Cornelison and Mr.
Don Reid.
Mrs. Baker began her 34 year journey at
Leesville Road Elementary in 1971. After 17
years at LRES, the Baker family relocated and
she taught special ed at Indianapolis Public
Schools. In 1994, the Bakers relocated to
Cairo, Egypt. While there, she substituted at
the American school and volunteered at a clinic
washing Egyptian babies. She finally came
back home to Lynchburg and for the past ten
years, Mrs. Baker has enjoyed the challenge of
high school students at BHS and has now
taught every grade level. She has been
blessed as multiple generations of students
return to visit and want to share the impact she
had on their lives.
Mrs. Cornelison began teaching biology at
William Campbell High School in 1995. After 2
years of teaching three levels of biology, one
chemistry class was added. The following year,
it was all Chemistry I and II. She transferred to
Brookville where she has had the most
amazing groups of students. She frequently
hears from former students taking a college
chemistry class, telling her how much they
remember (or don’t remember) from high
school or asking how to work a problem!
Mr. Reid came to Campbell County in 1970. He
transferred to Brookville in 1973 where he has
played a huge part in many of the students
lives.
All three of these exceptional teachers will be
greatly missed by the faculty and staff at
Brookville High School.
We wish you all much happiness in your
retirement years!

From the Library
I
t has been a pleasure to work with the
many seniors who have patronized the
BHS library this year! Best wishes to them
as they move on to new opportunities and
challenges. Special thanks to all of this year’s
library assistants: seniors Justin Watts, Jackie
Swyhart, Patrick McLaughlin, Kimberly
Gillespie, Cuillen Takach, Jennifer Buchanan,
Blake Johnson, Trey Lindsey, and juniors
Kayla Rose and Olyvia Brown-Coles. The
library would not be the same without their
help! They have shelved books, cleaned
tables, scanned nearly 14,000 books for
inventory, unboxed new equipment, clipped
current events from the newspapers,
maintained the newspaper racks, and helped
with the magazines.
Even as this school year comes to an
end, planning has begun for the 2011-2012
school year. The BHS library will once again
participate in the Virginia Choice Book
program. The nominated titles are highly
acclaimed books which will make for great
summer reading. Students can also gain a
head start toward reading the number of books
required to vote for Virginia’s Choice Book in
the spring of 2012. Titles include the following

Hope the summer is great fun for
everyone; students, parents, and teachers
alike, with many opportunities to relax with a

BHS Cafeteria News
Starting Monday (May 16) students will
not be allowed to charge their lunch. We
have a large number of accounts that
are in the negative and this debt owed to the
cafeteria must be paid before school is out . If
you have a negative account, you will not be
allowed to get the lunch of your choice…you
will have to take a cheese sandwich and a cup
of fruit with their milk . The charge system was
set up for emergency purposes only and has
been greatly abused this year. This comes
from Central Office in Rustburg and must be
taken care of as soon as possible . Students
will not be allowed to buy extras until this is
taken care of. Thank you very much.
Basketball Camp
Brookville High School will hold Basketball
Camp beginning June 20 through June
24, 2011. The camp times will be 9 am
until 1 pm. Boys entering grades 1-10 in
August of 2011 will be eligible. Girls entering
grades 1-3 in August of 2011 will be eligible.
The cost is $85 per camper if paid in full by
June 1. Cost will be $95 if paid after June 1. A
$25 non-refundable deposit per camper must
accompany the registration form (available in
the main office or online at
www.bhsbees.com). To receive the $10
discount, the $60 balance must be received
by June 1. No deposit will be refunded after
the registration form has been accepted.

again be creating a Senior Dedication
section for the Class of 2012 in the fall

sports program. If you or a relative
would like to include your special senior,
please send a picture of your child along with
the wording of the dedication you would like to
appear to the school or drop it in the Athletic
Boosters’ box in the main office. Please mark
the envelope “Attention: Program Committee”.
Be sure your child’s name is on the back of the
picture and include a self-addressed stamped
envelope for the return of your photo. The cost
of the dedication is $25. This offer is only valid
for the Class of 2012. Deadline for all
dedications is August 2, 2011.
