Day 19 Petra A highlight of your trip is today’s Included full day walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra. This magnificent ancient city, carved into the Sandstone Mountains, is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious race who settled in south Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. By the 16th century Petra had become completely lost to the West, and remained so until 1812 when the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt persuaded his guide to take him to the site of the rumoured lost city. The impressive eastern entrance of the city leads down through a brilliantly coloured narrow gorge or Siq, carved by an ancient waterway. Marvel at Petra’s most famous monument: the imposing Treasury more than 40 metres high, which appears dramatically at the end of the Siq.
