promi nently in the early Nazi Party. Hirsch feld had formed
the SHC to carry on the work of the pio neer “gay rights” ac -
tiv ist, Karl Hein rich Ul richs (1825-1895). Ul richs had writ -
ten against the con cept of “Greek love” (ped er asty)
ad vo cated by a number of other ho mo sexu als in Ger many.
One such ad vo cate was Adolf Brand, who
formed the Ge mein schaft der Ei ge nen (“Com mu nity of
the Elite”) in 1902. The Ge mein schaft der Ei ge nen in spired
the for ma tion in 1920 of the Ger man Friend ship League,
which changed its name in 1923 to the So ci ety for Hu man
Rights. The lead ers of this group were in stru men tal in the
for ma tion and the rise of the Nazi Party. Adolf Brand pub -
lished the world’s first ho mo sex ual pe ri odi cal, Der Ei gene
(“The Elite” - Ooster huis and Ken nedy:cover). Brand was
a ped er ast, child por nog ra pher and anti- Semite, and, along
with many ho mo sexu als who shared his phi loso phies, de -
vel oped a burn ing ha tred of Mag nus Hirsch feld and
the SHC. When Hirsch feld’s Sex Re search In sti tute was
de stroyed, the SA troops were un der the gen eral com mand
of Ernst Roehm, a mem ber of Brand’s spinoff group, the
So ci ety for Hu man Rights.

This was not the last time ho mo sex ual lead er ship of the
Na zis would at tack other ideo logi cally dis simi lar ho mo -
sexu als. Later in this dis cus sion we will ex am ine the socalled
“pink tri an gle” ho mo sexu als who were in terned in
con cen tra tion camps. The pink tri an gle, part of a scheme of
variously- colored tri an gles used by the Na zis to iden tify
spe cific classes of pris on ers, was ap plied to those con victed
un der Para graph 175 of the Ger man Pe nal Code. Ho mo -
