Automotive Radar – History, state-of-the-art and future
trends
Holger H. Meinel, Daimler AG
Automotive radar based on millimetre waves - today in the 24/ 26 GHz and in
the 77/ 79 GHz range – has been under investigation and development since
several decades. Since 1997 automotive radar is commercially available and
employed by various OEM’s all over the world, until now predominantly in
expensive Premium cars. With the standard serial implementation of a CPA
sensor (Collision Prevention Assist) in 2011, democratization of vehicle safety
has now been started on a broad level. Today such radar systems are used for
various vehicular applications. The final goal of autonomous driving comes
into view. Different frequency bands, modulation schemes, emission powers,
or radiation patterns are employed today. However, more sophisticated
approaches, like DBF (Digital Beam Forming) antennas or polarimetric signal
evaluation are, concerning automotive radar, still in research and development.
Automotive radar, the history, today’s state-of-the-art as well as possible
future trends will be reviewed.
11:35 - 12:20
RF Technology as an enabler for Future Above Water
Warfare
CAPT (WE) B.R. Hendriks MA, Netherlands Defense Materiel Organization
Future Surface Combatants face the challenges of multi-role tasking
anticipating the challenges of a global maritime security environment, whilst
coping with trends like reduced manning, intensive operational use, in theatre
maintenance and having to control and reduce life cycle costs. Answering such
a requirement package has impact on the sensor and communication fit of
naval platforms. Radar functionalities, architectures and last but not least RF
front-ends are key-issues to be analyzed in order to meet the challenges the
future offers us.
