Dear Friends,<br />
Thanks to you, hope was just around the corner for many of your<br />
neighbors in 2011.<br />
Hope was in Claire’s grasp, who was struggling to make ends meet<br />
with the recent death of her sister and the addition of her niece into<br />
her home.<br />
And hope was found at the home of John, who felt like he had<br />
nowhere to turn, until someone told him about MOM. Now, with<br />
financial assistance and a new job, he and his daughter feel secure<br />
about the future.<br />
Hope can be found every day at MOM. It is at the Food Pantry when<br />
people fill up their bags with fresh produce from the MOM garden so<br />
they can make their children a healthy meal. It is there when a<br />
volunteer smiles at a client and offers to help him find a new coat or<br />
when a senior is picked up and taken to the grocery store, an<br />
everyday necessity made easier for a tired body.<br />
Because of you, hope is within the reach of more than 3,000 of<br />
your neighbors who rely on MOM to make it through each<br />
month.<br />
Your generosity is what brings hope to the lives of people like Claire<br />
and John. It’s the generosity of the girl who used her pet sitting<br />
money to make a donation for a family in need and it's the joy of the<br />
gentleman who throws all of his change in a jar and then delivers it to<br />
the MOM office every December – it’s people like you who are<br />
changing the lives of people in this community.<br />
This coming year will be an exciting and important one for MOM.<br />
The needs in the West Madison and <strong>Middleton</strong> communities have<br />
grown, and MOM's efforts to end hunger and prevent homelessness<br />
has expanded to include innovative and progressive programs to<br />
meet these needs. Having two separate facilities for our office and<br />
distribution center decreases the synergy needed to manage our<br />
robust programs and creates barriers to clients. For these<br />
reasons, we will continue our search for a new facility in 2012. We<br />
are also excited for a new director to lead this upward moving<br />
organization.<br />
MOM’s Board of Directors and exceptional staff are stronger than<br />
ever and together with all of you, we are ready to make 2012 the best<br />
year yet. If we continue to come together to help our neighbors and<br />
our community, we can prevent homelessness and end hunger –<br />
and bring hope - right here.<br />

MOM was a big part of<br />
Tahkaney’s life as she<br />
was growing up.<br />
Her mother, single and<br />
disabled, budgeted and<br />
saved. Even so, she had<br />
to rely on MOM when<br />
emergencies arose or<br />
when cupboards were<br />
bare at the end of the<br />
month.<br />
Each fall when Tahkaney received school supplies from MOM, she thought<br />
about her caring neighbors and community. Their support not only helped<br />
her hardworking family, it motivated her to do her best at school.<br />
Tahkaney believes this support helped her achieve her dream. She<br />
received a full scholarship to Stanford University, where she is currently<br />
enjoying her freshman year.<br />
Community support turned this family's fear into<br />
hope and plans for a better future.<br />

Kayla came into MOM’s office with fear. She was<br />
married with several children, and she and her family had<br />
lived in the same home for over ten years. Her husband<br />
had been laid off from his well-paying Director of Human<br />
Resources position nearly a year ago, and his<br />
unemployment and their savings were running out.<br />
They had never thought that this could happen to them,<br />
and she couldn’t imagine not having enough food to feed<br />
her children.<br />
During Kayla’s first appointment with MOM she learned<br />
that she could use the Food Pantry as often as she<br />
needed. With her large family, food was one of their<br />
highest expenses. Her fear started to diminish. She was<br />
told of other ways that MOM could help them get back<br />
on their feet, and together with a caseworker, she<br />
developed a plan.<br />
Months later, Kayla called to tell her caseworker that<br />
her family no longer needed MOM’s services.<br />
Her husband had found another well-paying job, and in<br />
fact, they were looking forward to giving back.<br />
“I was blown away by the kindness of everyone at<br />
MOM. I wish I could explain the relief of not having to<br />
choose between rent or food. You gave us such hope.”<br />

For more than 30 years, MOM has led a community-wide effort to prevent homelessness<br />
and end hunger in West Madison, <strong>Middleton</strong> and Cross Plains—a service area that totals<br />
more than 60,000 people. With the help of business partners, area schools, affiliated<br />
churches, service clubs and hundreds of volunteers, MOM helps those who need us most by<br />
providing basic needs:<br />

Food: We are serious about ending hunger in our service area through<br />
our self-serve Food Pantry and food programs which serve nearly 4,000<br />
people and give out over 50,000 pounds per month. Our programs<br />
include a Mobile Food Pantry, which serves over 150 seniors and people<br />
with disabilities per month, and a Pantry Garden which includes a<br />
teaching garden for clients. The programs gave out nearly 60% more<br />
food in 2011 than in 2010.<br />
Clothing: Approximately 800 households receive gently used clothing<br />
and linens, free of charge, through the Clothing Closet. The program<br />
saves clients over $300,000, calculated at thrift store prices.<br />
Housing Assistance and Emergency Funds: Case management by<br />
MOM’s social work team results in aid for rent, utilities, and other critical<br />
needs. Caseworkers assist with basic budgets and skills needed to<br />
maintain long-term stable housing. 475 families received support in 2011.<br />
Help for Seniors: Seniors maintain their household independence<br />
thanks to assistance with transportation, household chores, and shopping<br />
by volunteers in our Seniors Program. Nearly 3,000 hours of volunteer<br />
service for seniors are provided per year.<br />
Seasonal Programs: MOM provides seasonal and holiday assistance to<br />
relieve stress and allow families to use their limited resources for basic<br />
needs, such as rent and utilities. 640 children received school supplies;<br />
350 families received Thanksgiving Baskets; and 465 families were<br />
matched for Sharing Christmas in 2011.<br />
