12 LCIs CERTIFIED
at first NYC Instructor Training Since 1997
NEW YORK, OCTOBER 2006
Columbus Day weekend was back-toschool
time for cyclists aged 25 to 73 who
participated in a Bike New York-hosted
training for cycling instructors.
Organized by Bike New York’s
Bicycle Education Manager Rich Conroy,
and led by Charley LaFlamme, a League
trainer affiliated with the Bicycle Coalition
of Maine, the seminar was the first
LCI training in the Big Apple in nearly a
decade. The class took full advantage of
the setting, with a dinner at Hostelling
International-New York, classroom time
at a Recycle-A-Bicycle facility in Queens,
a night ride with spectacular skyline views,
and a test route including landmarks such
as Central Park and the Queensboro
Bridge.
“I was reminded on numerous occasions
over the weekend that the seminar
was held in the ‘Greatest City in the
World,’” commented LaFlamme. “Even
so, I feel that what made this particular
seminar special and so great were the
participants and the tremendous assistance
I received from Bike New York and
Recycle-A-Bike.”
After two and a half days of instruction
and activities, a dozen cyclists earned
certification, more than doubling New
York City’s instructor pool. Among the
new LCIs are a bicycle and pedestrian
coordinator from the New York State
DOT, a handful of Bicycle Touring Club
of North Jersey members, and two fluent
Spanish speakers who received scholarships
from Bike New York in exchange for
a teaching commitment.
“We’re so excited to have a larger
pool of instructors in the area. Bike New
York is looking forward to collaborating
with these talented, energetic individuals
to provide cycling education to many
different populations of cyclists,” said
Executive Director Pam Tice.
Bike New York (www.BikeNewYork.
org) is a non-profit organization that
promotes and encourages bicycling and
bicycle safety through education, public
events, and collaboration with community
and government organizations. Its Five
Boro Bike Tour will celebrate its 30th anniversary
in 2007.
I was reminded on numer-
ous occasions over the
weekend that the seminar
was held in the ‘Greatest
City in the World.’
