The only drum in the set that uses a single wood. Our 8˝ and 10˝ toms feature 4 plies of Maple blended with 2 inner plies of Birch for added cut and attack. Beginning with the 13˝ tom and larger drums, African Mahogany is added to the inner plies to increase the lower frequencies and accentuate the warmth of the Maple. Our 22˝ and 24˝ bass drums incorporate an amazing 6 inner plies of Mahogany surrounded by 2 outer plies of Maple for the ultimate bass frequencies. Optimized Thickness Simply put, building a set of drums with one shell thickness is a compromise. Lower frequencies require greater energy to equal the projection of the higher frequencies, requiring the larger diameter drums to be thicker than the smaller drums. Reference and Reference Pure drum sets use the same recipe that features two very different shell thicknesses: 6 plies on rack toms and 8 plies on floor toms. and bass drums, resulting in incredibly balanced sound. But only making the shells on the larger drums thicker would raise the pitch, so we counteract this affect by adding African Mahogany which naturally lowers the pitch. Optimized Bearing Edge The bearing edge is where the drumhead comes in contact with the shell and just like shell thickness and wood composition limiting your kit to one bearing edge would be yet another compromise. The sharp 45 degree bearing edge used on Reference & Reference Pure snare drums brings every ply into play by promoting a tightly focused shell contact area for extreme sensitivity and maximum volume. The rounded 45 degree edge used on our 8˝ through 13˝ toms offers the right amount of cut, attack and projection, balanced with solid punch. REFERENCE “PURE” REFERENCE Thin Ply Shells Reference PURE toms feature 6 ply shells that are 5.4mm thick and 8 ply floor toms and bass drums 7.2mm thick. 8˝ and 10˝ toms blend Maple and Birch while 12˝ toms are 100% Maple. Floor toms and bass drums blend Maple and African Mahogany. Rack toms utilize a rounded 45 degree bearing edge with a fully rounded bearing edge on floor toms and bass drums. STL Lugs Reference PURE features STL swivel tube lugs with minimal contact and super low-mass that allows the drums to vibrate freely for ultimate resonance. STL Lugs feature a swivel nut that keeps the tension rods perfectly aligned and free for absolutely no binding for PURE TONE with accurate and precise tuning. FatTone Hoops Reference PURE features <strong>Pearl</strong>’s 1.6mm thick FatTone Hoops that combine low-mass for incredible resonance with our exclusive hemmed and welded edge that adds amazing strength and rigidity at the point of contact for tremendous rim shots and cross sticking. Regular Ply Shells Reference toms feature 6 ply shells that are 7.5mm thick and 8 ply floor toms and bass drums 10mm thick. 8˝ and 10˝ toms blend Maple and Birch while 12˝ toms are 100% Maple. Floor toms and bass drums blend Maple and African Mahogany. Rack toms utilize a rounded 45 degree bearing edge with a fully rounded bearing edge on floor toms and bass drums. BRL Lugs The revolutionary BRL bridge style lugs used on Reference features a swivel function that allows the tension rods to align perfectly into the lug to prevent any lateral pressure against the hoops. This feature also allows for extremely quick head changes.
