The industry is dependent on imports for raw materials<br />

The main raw materials for the gems <strong>and</strong> jewellery industry are<br />

rough diamonds, recycled gold <strong>and</strong> gold bars. The industry is<br />

highly dependent on imports for its requirement. Rough<br />

diamonds <strong>and</strong> gold bars are imported, while recycled gold is<br />

obtained from the domestic market.<br />

India imports all its requirements of rough diamonds. India<br />

imported rough diamonds worth US$ 7.141 billion in 2004<br />

compared to US$ 6.271 billion in 2003. The imports of diamonds<br />

in India have grown at a CAGR of around 10 per cent over the<br />

last four years. Imports of rough diamonds grew 6.3 per cent to<br />

US$ 7.59 billion in 2004- 05.<br />

India imported gold bars worth US$ 815 million in 2004<br />

compared to US$ 439 million in 2000, a CAGR of around<br />

16.7 per cent for the past four years.<br />

The imports of gems in India have been consistent for the<br />

past three years. India imports small quantities of pearls <strong>and</strong><br />

synthetic stones compared to diamond <strong>and</strong> gold. India imported<br />
