In narrowly winning the Grand Prix de
Paris, Imperial Monarch became the
first male member of Galileo’s 2009
crop to become a Gr1 winner, though
two fillies – Maybe and Was – had
already achieved that status. His
victory also finally added the Grand
Prix to Galileo’s stallion CV, the best
previous efforts being seconds by his
sons Red Rocks in 2006, Age Of
Aquarius in 2009 and Seville in 2011.
Imperial Monarch comes from a
female line which has also suffered a
frustrating run of near misses in major
middle-distance events. When
Galileo’s sire Sadler’s Wells was first
mated with Imperial Monarch’s very
talented second dam Snow Day, he
sired the 1990 Derby second Blue
Stag. Snow Day’s next Sadler’s Wells
colt, Oscar, filled the same position in
the 1997 Prix du Jockey-Club, in the
days when it was over a mile and a
half. Imperial Monarch’s stakeswinning
dam Ionian Sea also became
a regular visitor to Sadler’s Wells after
being bought for 45,000gns in 1998.
Her first visit produced The Great
Gatsby, who nearly sprang a 20-1
surprise in the 2003 Derby.
Ionian Sea’s four subsequent foals
by Sadler’s Wells included a pair of
Gr1 performers in Magritte, a lightlyraced
third in the Racing Post Trophy,
and Roman Empress, third in the
Yorkshire Oaks. Since then she has
visited Sadler’s Wells’s sons Montjeu
(sire of her smart stayer Mount Athos)
and Galileo. Imperial Monarch’s yearyounger
sister selling for 400,000gns
as a yearling.
Ionian Sea’s bloodlines made her
an ideal candidate for Sadler’s Wells.
In addition to being a half-sister to two
Classic performers by him, she was by
Slip Anchor. Like his sire Shirley
Heights and grandsire Mill Reef, Slip
Anchor had triumphed in the Derby,
and mares by these Mill Reef line
stallions had excelled with Sadler’s
Wells, notably producing High
Chaparral. Although there is no
inbreeding in the first five generations,
two of his grandparents – Urban Sea
and Slip Anchor – are out of mares
with similar German bloodlines. Urban
Sea’s dam Allegretta was inbred 2 x 4
to the German Derby winner Alchimist
and had a second dam by another
German Derby winner, Magnat. On the
other hand Slip Anchor’s dam Sayonara
was inbred 4 x 4 to Alchimist and had a
third dam by Magnat.

As his name indicates Mayson was a
May foal, born as late as May 16. This
goes a long way towards explaining
why his record has been one of
constant progression. Rated a
creditable 98 by the Racing Post as a
two-year-old, he improved that figure
to 105 at three. Now, as a mature
four-year-old, he has recorded three
stakes successes, achieving Racing
Post ratings of 114, 115 and 122 in
the process. That figure of 122 came
when he led most of the way on heavy
ground to take the July Cup by five
lengths.
In doing so he extended the
remarkable impact that Danzig has
exerted on this Gr1 prize. Danzig was
responsible for no fewer than six
winners of this top sprint, thanks to
Green Desert, Polish Patriot, Hamas,
Anabaa, Elnadim and Agnes World.
His stallion sons, grandsons and
great-grandsons have extended his
influence, with Green Desert playing
the leading role. Himself responsible
for the winners Owington and Oasis
Dream, Green Desert is also the sire
of Invincible Spirit, who has two July
Cup winners to his credit, thanks to
Fleeting Spirit in 2009 and now
Mayson.
Mayson’s second dam Bayleaf was
an above-average sprinter. After
making a winning debut, she was
fourth in the Flying Childers Stakes
and then earned a Timeform rating of
104 at three. Bayleaf passed on
plenty of her speed to her tough son
Bathwick Bear and her Molecomb
Stakes third Folio. However, her
Pivotal filly Mayleaf failed to find a
buyer at 27,000gns as a yearling and
never raced. However, Mayleaf made
an excellent start as a broodmare,
producing Mayson as her first foal.
Another by Invincible Spirit with a dam
by Pivotal is the 2012 Listed winner
Requisition.
Bayleaf’s elder sister Baize was
also fast and precocious. An
impressive winner of her first two
juvenile starts, Baize then finished
third in the Molecomb. Baize and
Bayleaf were bred to be speedy, with
Efisio as their sire and a five-furlong
specialist by Bay Express as their dam.
Despite her speedy background Baize
produced Singhalese, a Singspiel filly
who won the Gr1 Del Mar Oaks over
nine furlongs. Singhalese in turn is the
dam of the Deep Impact colt Adam’s
Peak, a Gr3 winner over a mile and a
quarter at two in Japan in 2011.
