Winning the Arc and the King George
is an extremely difficult task, achieved
in the last 50 years only by such stars
as Mill Reef, Dancing Brave,
Lammtarra, Montjeu, Hurricane Run
and Dylan Thomas. No filly had
achieved the double until Danedream
followed up her impressive 2011 Arc
victory with a narrow success against
a very deep field for the 2012 King
George. Perhaps Park Top would have
beaten her to that distinction had she
not been given so much to do in the
1969 Arc.
One of those dual winners,
Lammtarra, was a son of Nijinsky and
Danedream also descends from the
impressive 1970 King George winner,
her sire Lomitas being a grandson of
Nijinsky. Lomitas was an outstanding
three-year-old in 1991, when his only
setback in six starts came when he
was beaten by Temporal in the
Deutsches Derby. Lomitas later turned
the tables on Temporal when he ran
out a seven-length winner of the Gr1
Grosser Preis von Baden and he also
took the Gr1 Europa-Preis by eight
lengths. Danedream also won the
Grosser Preis von Baden by a wide
margin at three.
Lomitas didn’t make his debut at
Gestut Fahrhof until he was seven.
Fortunately he quickly made an
impact, with his first crop containing
Belenus (Gr1 Deutsches Derby),
Silvano (Gr1 Arlington Million) and
Sumitas (Gr2 Knickerbocker
Handicap).
Lomitas’s bright start ultimately saw
him join the Darley team at
Newmarket in 2002 but he returned
to Germany after the 2006 season, so
Danedream’s dam Danedrop was
among the first mares covered by
Lomitas after his return to Fahrhof. He
died in 2010, at the age of 22.
Danedream’s broodmare sire, the
mighty Danehill, enjoyed some of his
finest moments as a sire with mares
from the Nijinsky line. He sired Dansili,
Banks Hill, Intercontinental, Cacique,
Champs Elysees and Promising Lead
from sisters sired by Nijinsky’s
grandson Kahyasi, plus the Prix Ganay
winner Indian Danehill from a mare by
Green Dancer and the champion
Australian sprinter Fastnet Rock from
a Royal Academy mare.
Danedream’s dam Danedrop never
made it to the races and was sold for
€17,000 soon after Danedream was
weaned. Danedream herself made
only €9,000 when sold as a two-yearold.
However, Danedream comes from
a highly distinguished female line, her
dam being a grand-daughter of Lady
Berry. This very smart stayer won the
Gr1 Prix Royal-Oak and she proved
highly effective as a broodmare. She
produced three Gr1 winners in Indian
Rose (Prix Vermeille), Le Nain Jaune
(Grand Prix de Paris over nearly two
miles) and Vert Amande (Prix Ganay
and third in the Arc).
Lady Berry’s daughter Featherhill
also excelled as a broodmare, notably
producing the high-class Groom
Dancer. Lady Berry’s female
descendants are also responsible for
such Gr1 winners as Falco, Plumania
and Kinshasa No Kiseki.
