Advocacy and tennis:
What is your role?
By Jack Olson, USTA Pacifi c Northwest Advocacy Consultant
U
STA National and the USTA Pacifi c Northwest (USTA/PNW) are committed to assisting
grassroots advocacy eff orts for tennis. What is advocacy in the tennis context, what is
the USTA’s role and what is your role?
At the most basic level, advocacy is an organized eff ort to inform and persuade decision
makers to make choices that are benefi cial to the tennis community. Decisions that have
an impact on community tennis are made at the local level, usually at the city or school
district level.
Advocacy becomes acutely important as it can infl uence specifi c decisions concerning
tennis in a community. Th e decisions can be either positive or negative in nature. For example,
there could be a plan for expanded tennis facilities or programs, or there could be a threat
to cut funding, programs or facilities. In either case, tennis needs someone to step up and
participate in the decision making process.
The USTA’s role:
Th ere are two primary tools that the USTA can provide. First, we can provide advice and
resource material on the advocacy process. Second, where appropriate, the USTA can lend
its name to the advocacy eff ort with both personnel and written support. In either case,
the fi rst thing that must happen is for someone to let the USTA know that a decision point
regarding the health of tennis in your community is on the horizon and that help is needed.
Your role:
If you are a tennis enthusiast, you have a vital role in advocacy for tennis. Job one is to
be aware of what is going on in your city and schools concerning tennis. If you hear that a
decision is being considered that will have an impact on the sport, let someone within the
USTA/PNW know as early as possible. It may simply be a rumor but we can help in making
that determination. If there is a pending proposal, we can help you plan a course of action
in response to the proposal.
In some instances, you may wish to be proactive and initiate an eff ort to improve tennis
in your community. We can provide help in that eff ort and early notifi cation to the USTA/
PNW is important in this situation as well. Please feel free to contact our offi ce at any time
by phone at (503) 520-1877 or by email at info@pnw.usta.com.
As individuals who realize the value and many benefi ts of tennis, we all need to be advocates.
Early notifi cation and your active participation are vital to eff ective advocacy eff orts
and the continued health of the sport in our section.
