L<br />
LAN: Local area network. A data network limited to a small<br />
geographic area. A LAN can be as small as a couple of devices<br />
connected on the same network or as large as a campus-wide<br />
installation with numerous buildings and thousands of addressable<br />
devices on the same network.<br />
M<br />
MAC: (1) In network terminology, an acronym <strong>for</strong> media<br />
access control. The part of the network interface that controls<br />
physical access to the LAN through the MAC address. (2) In<br />
telephone system administration terminology, an acronym<br />
<strong>for</strong> moves, adds, and changes. MAC describes the most<br />
common type of maintenance necessary in traditional telephone<br />
systems.<br />
MAC address: An address that uniquely identifies a network<br />
device. The MAC address is typically represented in hexadecimal<br />
notation, as in 00-04-23-58-90-6E.<br />
N<br />
network feature: Calling features provided in a <strong>VoIP</strong> network.<br />
For example, presence, Web surfing, and vemail are network<br />
features.<br />
NIC: Network interface card. Provides the network device,<br />
such as a computer or a <strong>VoIP</strong> telephone, with its MAC address<br />
and the means <strong>for</strong> connecting to the LAN.<br />
O<br />
off-net: In <strong>VoIP</strong> telephony, refers to calls that must be carried<br />
on another network (usually the PSTN) external to the <strong>VoIP</strong><br />
network.<br />
on-net: In <strong>VoIP</strong> telephony, refers to calls carried on the customer’s<br />
network.
