Clearly, the basic concept of an on-board
navigation system is here to stay, and for good
reason. Heck, it’s really a no-brainer. Just about
anyone who travels by car, for business or pleasure,
is bound to appreciate being able to get
from A to B in the most effi cient manner (without
getting lost in the process).
However, the way major carmakers choose to
offer this feature nowadays virtually guarantees
that you can’t have an integrated on-board system
without spending really big bucks.
As Bill Howard suggests in his recent column
(June ROUNDEL), many carmakers seem to be
stuck in a mindset that leaves them unable (or
unwilling) to offer decent built-in navigation for
less than $1,000. As he sees it, these carmakers
“can’t do navigation for less than $1,000 [because]
they have no intention of giving you navigation”
unless it’s fully integrated with the multifarious
systems already in the cars.
In other words, the Automotive Establishment’s
view is that there ain’t no such thing as
an on-board GPS unit with all the right features
– moving maps, voice prompts – that’s NOT tied
into a car’s audio system, or touch-screen, or
climate controls, or whatever. There’s more to
Bill’s story (good stuff, too). But for me, what fi rst
struck me was – this is a classic case of planned
obsolescence. There’s no way of replacing a nav
system with a new, improved model except by
turning in the car for a newer model!
There is, of course, a cheaper yet satisfactory
alternative: Forget about what carmakers
want to sell you and create your own in-car nav
system. It’s therefore not surprising that the af-
PAUL HOECKE Notes from the road
The Trouble With GPS
termarket business is alive and well. The wide
selection of GPS units in electronics stores, at
prices ranging between $200 and $400, is impressive.
And judging by all the vehicles that sport
them on their dashboards or suction-cupped to
their windshields, there seems to be no end to
the demand either. The competition may even stir
those carmakers out of their rut, although (as Bill
suggests) it may very well be Ford and Hyundai,
rather than BMW, leading the way to an AFFORD-
ABLE yet effective on-board GPS system.
Be that as it may, I wish everyone concerned
the best of luck. But trust me to come up with yet
another alternative to this whole navigation issue:
Don’t bother getting one. I suspect I’m in the
minority on this, but I have my reasons.
By now, you know me to be somewhat conservative
when it comes to cars. I’m not one to
rush out and get the latest accessory just because
it’s available. The car industry is full of blind alleys.
(Anybody still remember push-button transmissions?)
More important, I also like to keep
things simple. Now, I’ll admit that, wandering
past the display of Magellans and Garmins at the
local Best Buys, I’ve been occasionally tempted
to get one of these little plug-in gizmos. The technology
is pretty neat – being told by a satellite in
orbit where on the globe I happen to be located is
sort of inspiring. (I’ve been something of a space
nut from the Wernher von Braun days.) But every
time I’ve come close to buying one, my mind
comes up with this pop-up menu of reasons why I
don’t really need to.
For one thing, I’m sort of wedded to maps –
paper maps, that is. They’re REALLY cheap; and
2 TARHEEL CHAPTER FOOTNOTES http://www.tarheelbmwcca.org
although they may get tattered and oil-stained
over time, they serve my purpose, which is to give
me the lay of the land where I’m headed. I don’t
claim to have a photographic memory, but having
driven all over the Lower Forty-Eight, I fi nd it easy
to remember what routes lead where, without
referring to maps over and over again. And I’ve
never gotten lost; ‘off-course’, yes (that’s rally jargon),
but not lost in the sense of needing outside
help to get back on course (I know, I know: Guys
allegedly don’t like to ask for directions; but that’s
not really my problem.)
More to my point though, I’d fi nd a rolling
map display and /or a voice telling me where
to go a distraction. Like I said, I generally know
where I’m headed – unless I’m just sightseeing,
i.e. cruising around the countryside with no goal
other than exploring – and getting back to where
I started. Anyone with any sense of direction (sun
rises in the east, sets in the west) should be able
to handle that.
But there’s more. When I’m on the road, I
prefer to observe my surroundings, see the coun-
The Editor’s Desk...
I moved in to my new shop space last month
and I can honestly say, working on cars is a lot
more fun now that I don’t have to move things
around every time I want to work! Even better, I
can get started on some of the longer term projects
that have been on the list for years.
30’ x ‘40, the new place looked huge with
nothing in it, but now that everything is moved
in it’s nice and cozy. Still plenty of room for my
needs, with room for two long-term projects and a
bay for maintenance. Biggest problem so far was
deciding what would get moved to the shop and
what stays at the garage––hint to Santa, guess I
just need doubles of all my tools...
Next, the lift goes in. Holding off on that
until January though––fi gured I would get settled
in and get everything where I wanted it since it
would be a bit diffi cult to move the lift if I change
my mind on placement. Now, what brand of lift...
Probably Mohawk, 10,000 lbs (got to be able to
pick up the F250, you know).
Now, if I can only keep my friends cars out, I
can get some work done! -ed.
tryside fi rst hand, as it were. Having a GPS unit
would probably put a crimp in that. Analogous to
the “build it and they will come” principle, even
an occasional glance at the display would put me
in the position of the proverbial tourist who never
actually sees any of the sights he or she visits
except through the lens of a camera. Where’s the
fun in that?
A much more immediate and practical problem
(as I see it) is that a free-standing GPS unit
is worth stealing. Having one in any of our cars
would vastly increase chances of some greedy
lout breaking a window (or worse) while trying to
grab the unit. Even if the perp were to fail in the
attempt, the cost of the resulting damage would
exceed by far the usefulness of the unit.
This doesn’t quite close the book on GPS for
me. One area where I think it’s supremely useful
is in hiking and camping off the beaten path. The
purpose-built hand-held units now available are
great – waterproof, long-life batteries, displays
that are readable in all kinds of light conditions –
the lot.
But it’s obvious I still have a lot to learn
about the different kinds of units out there. Case
in point: I gave son Paul a Magellan hand-held for
his birthday. He loves to explore our many state
parks on foot, and loved my present, at fi rst – but
ended up returning it to the store. Seems I had
neglected to notice that this particular unit is
primarily designed for geocaching. Now, I know
that’s a sort of point-to-point treasure hunt that
can take one all over the state, the country – or
even the world. What I didn’t realize was that this
particular unit was so specialized as to pretty
much preempt other, more pedestrian functions –
such as fi nding your way in uncharted territory.
Oh well, I guess it’ll take me a few more baby
steps to really join the 21st century.
Tarheel Chapter
CLUB RACING REPORT
BY PAUL HOECKE
We can only guess what kept local hot shoes
from their usual haunts these past couple of
months. Maybe it was the early onset of sweltering
summer heat, or maybe it was something
else. But the fact remains that as the midpoint of
the racing season approached, participation by
Tarheel drivers in Club Racing (CR) events as well
as other non-pro circuits continued to be pretty
sparse.
Between late May and early July, only a half
dozen or so of our guys showed up at CR and
NASA races that usually attract at least twice as
many. But several of them, especially Jason Crist
and Roman Lifson, deserve an award for persistence.
(We sort of like to call it the ‘Woody’ – for
comedian Woody Allen, who supposedly once
said that “99 percent of Life is Showing Up.”)
As we mentioned last month, Crist (JP) and
Lifson (IP), along with Tom Tice (Spec E36), Sri
Haputantri and Mike Skeen showed up at the
Club race at Mid-Ohio the last weekend in May.
To reach that Lexington, OH track is not exactly
an easy haul, which alone is a feather in our guys’
cap. Only the date of the event was past our deadline
for that report, which is why we had to leave
the results until now.
Those were pretty decent, especially for Crist,
who won JP in all three races (two sprints and an
enduro) that weekend. Lifson suffered a DNF in
the fi rst sprint, sat out the fun race, but returned
(with Skeen as co-driver) to fi nish sixth in IP in
the long race. And Tice fi nished all three races in
mid-pack.
Within two weeks, the Crist/Lifson duo was
Crist, Lifson Keep At It; BW Struggles
at it again, this time at the NASA Southeast twosprint
event at Road Atlanta. Competition must
have been tough, as Crist only managed fi fth and
fourth-place fi nishes in GTS2. Lifson did a bit better,
taking the checker in third place in GTS3 (and
seventh overall) in one race, but apparently chose
to sit out the other sprint. The next Southeast
Region race after Road Atlanta – the Firecracker
Run at Charlotte over the July 4th weekend – took
place past our deadline, but we expect both of our
hot shoes to have stayed their course.
Meanwhile, the NASA Mid-Atlantic Region’s
Hyperfest at Summit Point, also in June, saw only
one Tarheel driver, Madison Whittle, take part.
In our estimation, he too deserves a Woody, although
in this instance, he also did pretty well,
winning GTS1 in the fi rst sprint before fading to a
sixth-place fi nish in the next race. The Region was
to hold their July ‘Heat Wave’ event at VIR (shortly
after the Tarheel HPDS and Race School) but any
report on that NASA event (and Whittle) will have
to wait until next time.
One surprising aspect of all the NASA events
we’ve mentioned is that, despite sizable contingents
of Spec E30s at all of them, none included
any E30 racers from around here. This was so
much unlike times past that it’s gotten us to
wonder: Where was Carter Hunt, or Al ‘The Rev’,
or any of the other local E30 pilots? And, come
to think of it, where have all of our E30s gone?
Is there a massive push underway to rebuild and
reclassify them en masse, as it were? Conspiracy
theorists are welcome to theorize. Or, better yet, if
you know what’s happening, tell us.
6 TARHEEL CHAPTER FOOTNOTES http://www.tarheelbmwcca.org
Finally, we must mention one other ‘Woody’
candidate: Dennis Pippy. He has so far consistently
shown up in his #100 M3T car at every CR
event within reasonable reach of his NC home
base – and usually has won his class too. He did
so in June, at NJMP, where he collected two wins
in two races. (He chose to sit out the third sprint,
but apparently all his class rivals did likewise.)
Since that event used NJMP’s Thunderbolt circuit,
he’ll have a chance to do a repeat on the track’s
other course, the Lightning, this month, when it’s
the Jerzey Boys’ turn again to host a race weekend
there.
As for last month’s other CR offerings – BeaveRun
and Summit Point – those are not on our
docket for this report (deadlines, you know), but
we’ll hazard an opinionated prediction: Quite
likely, several local road warriors, including some
of our ‘Woody’ candidates, showed up at Summit
Point; but judging by the format of the Pittsburgh
event and last year’s results, attendance by local
drivers wasn’t in the cards.
On the other hand, our favorite local pro
team, BimmerWorld (BW) hasn’t had a days’ rest
since we forget when. And if you’ve been keeping
track of their assault on the Continental Tire
Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) series, you know
it’s been a tough season for them so far.
To recap: After last year’s stellar team record
with just two cars in the Street Tuner (ST) class,
team owner James Clay started this season with
four entries, including two new E92 V8s in the
brutally competitive Grand Sport (GS) class. But
the team’s high expectations have met with scant
success, as their season has turned into a School
of Hard Knocks, literally and fi guratively speaking.
As neither the ST cars nor the new GS cars
have had any real reliability problems, we could
feel paranoid enough to suggest that that whole
Grand-Am/CTSCC racing environment had it in for
BimmerWorld. Objectively speaking, though, the
problems seem to have been the result of several
factors – perhaps some bad luck; but also having
to play catch-up when you’re a couple of development
years behind the competition; the fact that
any element of surprise (which may have helped
BW last year) was gone; generally tougher competition;
and Grand-Am’s fi ddling with rules (e.g.
rpm limits) which applied to everyone but may
have affected BW more adversely. Be that as it
may, podium fi nishes have remained out of reach
for BW drivers of both the ST E90s and the GS
E92s since our last report on the race at VIR.
In late May, in the short-track race at Lime
Rock (which had the STs and GSs run separately)
the #81 328i of John Capestro-Dubets (JCD) and
Greg Liefooghe came closest to that elusive goal,
with a 7th-place fi nish in class. And the #78 GS
car of Bob Michaelian and Ken Wilden actually
ran in the lead pack before losing considerable
ground due to contact – and fi nishing tenth.
A week after Lime Rock, the team ended up
with similar results at Watkins Glen. (Clay’s press
release actually labeled the race “educational”!)
The only bright spot was, once again, # 81. Engine
problems had kept JCD from qualifying, so
he started from the tail-end of the pack. Then,
soon after the green fl ag, he got hit and had to pit
with a fl at tire. So he got back in the fray and was
working his way through the crowd toward the
front – when he got hit again and suffered another
fl at! The repairs lost him the lead lap – but upon
rejoining the race (and aided by a yellow) he managed
to regain the lost lap, something pretty unheard
of on a long track like the Glen. Liefooghe
then took the car to a tenth-place fi nish in ST
(24th overall), an improvement of 37 spots (not
counting all the positions lost and regained during
this Odyssey)!
For the Road America race in June, with Michaelian
and Wilden taking a planned break, Clay
reshuffl ed his driver teams. He handed #78 to
Liefooghe with rookie Lyonel Kent as co-driver,
while JCD in the #81 car got another rookie, CR
grad Nathaniel Sparks as his new co-driver. It
would have been interesting to see how these
new pairings would’ve worked out. But that hard
knocks factor interfered.
Kent got taken out just six laps into the race,
so Liefooghe never got to race the V8. And Sparks
also got knocked around, which took #81 out of
contention not quite halfway through the race,
with JCD on the sidelines. The #79 car of Clay and
Seth Thomas stayed in the fi ght and ran in the
top fi ve for most of the race, but late contact also
dropped it back to 15th place at the checker. It was
left to ST veterans Bill Heumann and Dave White
to keep the BW banner fl ying out front, which they
did, fi nishing ninth in class.
As you read this, two more races, last month’s
contests at Laguna Seca and NJMP, are history.
Since they took place past press time for this issue,
you may read about them next time – unless
you visit the SPEED Channel fi rst. Meanwhile,
though, it strikes us that Thomas’ comment after
Road America keynotes BW’s season very well:
“While 2011 has turned into more of a learning
year than we’d wanted,” he said, “our goal is now
to turn all of those lessons into a championshipwinning
team next season.”
With only next month’s fi nale at Mid-Ohio left
on the schedule, and unless a miracle happened
last month, Thomas’ comment seems spot on.
M Car Driver’s School at the
BMW Performance Center - October 22, 2011
The National Capital Chapter and the Tarheel Chapter of the BMWCCA are headed to Greer, SC on October
22, 2011 for a Spring driving school at the BMW Performance Center.
As always, the Performance Center provides a selection of ///M cars, instructors, gas, tires, lunch and a
fi rst-class facility for a fun-fi lled day. The school’s focus is to improve your driving skills through a combination
of driving exercises, classroom instruction and competitive events. No helmets or previous driving
school experience is required. We will be driving all ///M Cars for this event (at the last school, we drove
M3s coupes and sedans with the double clutch transmission, M5’s and M6’s, and it’s a possibility that the
1M may be available for this event). Just show up ready to drive!
This school is divided into morning and afternoon sessions which mix skill building and competitive
events, including skid pad exercises, wet/dry course, autocross and more. Please note that the Performance
Center staff continually updates the program, so session contents and the cars available to us may
vary from prior schools.
Since this is a joint school, each chapter will have 16 slots available (32 participants in total). Space
is limited and we anticipate that the school will fi ll quickly. The cost of the school is $630 per driver. Registration
is open and please begin mailing your applications now. Completed applications received from
Tarheel BMW CCA members on or before September 10, 2011 will be given equal priority for selection into
the school. If we have more applicants than slots, participants for the school will be selected by a random
drawing of those applications received on or before September 10, 2011 (and a wait list will be established
for other applicants). Applications will be considered complete upon receipt of both the registration form
and full payment. After September 10, 2011, the school will be opened to members of any other BMW CCA
chapters and fi lled on a fi rst come - fi rst served basis. Applications from other Chapters will be accepted
at any time, but priority will be given to applications of Tarheel Chapter Members received by September
10.
We will also arrange for optional dinner/socials on the evenings of Friday, October 21, and Saturday,
October 22. Subject to availability, we will try to schedule a factory tour of the BMW Manufacturing facility
on the afternoon of October 21. Due to the size of our group, we are usually split across multiple tour
times. Since the NCC folks have a long commute from the Washington DC area, Tarheel members who
want to do the tour should plan to be available for the earlier tour times, usually beginning around 2:00
p.m.
THE DETAILS:
FINE PRINT:
To insure that all Tarheel Chapter members have an opportunity for the limited slots for this event,
applications received from Tarheel members by September 10, 2011 will receive the same priority.
A current BMW CCA membership number is required – and membership will be confi rmed.
Applicants may include one immediate family member from their household on their school registration
(i.e. send in $1,260 if your spouse or child will be doing the school with you). Although we can’t
imagine why this family member is not an Associate Member, there is no requirement that he or she be a
BMWCCA member.
All applicants must be 18 or older with a valid driver’s license, no exceptions.
Priority will be given to Tarheel Chapter members for our chapter’s 16 slots in the school. If the
school is not fi lled by September 10, 2011, open slots will be made available to applicants from other
BMW CCA Chapters (with priority to National Capital Chapter members).
The registration fee includes lunch at the Performance Center. Lodging and other meals are extra.
Cancellation Policy: If selected for the school, the last day to cancel and receive a full refund is
September 15, 2011. After that date, you will receive a refund only if we are able to fi ll your spot in the
school.
