Classes The Rock Chipper For all classes, pre-registration is required. Payment in full (plus all additional member/non-member fees) will only then consider you registered for a particular class. Your registration is a commitment by you to the teacher to ensure proper planning. Please arrive shortly before scheduled class start time. There are no classes scheduled in July. Grab Bags Thank you to those who have stepped up to relieve Julie Bazen for your help in sewing grab bags. We are getting very low in our stock of grab bags, so please keep your sewing machines sewing. Thank you in advance. RAGMS Rock Star Volunteer Spotlight Jason Bazen In the Crater Rock Museum and the RAGMS lots of work goes on behind the scenes. We know it gets done, we just don’t know who does it. Jason Bazen is one of those unsung, unknown volunteers who does what needs to get done no matter what it is or how long it takes. So Jason, YOU are this month’s Rock Star. Jason stepped up this year when a Rock Show co-chair was needed. He made sure that the new venue was ready for the show and did a thousand other little things to ensure the show was a success It seems that he is the go-to guy whenever a door prize is needed for a meeting and always working the camera to make sure that the show-and-tell items are seen clearly by all. He manages the Facebook page on the internet and is the club picture-taker so we can all reminisce what a great time we had at club events. Jason helps Wendy in the workshop keeping the saws up and running. Many times the task is overwhelming and it’s hard to keep up. But Jason gives up his Saturdays to make sure everyone else has a good experience in the workshop. Let’s not forget Julie, Jason’s wife, either. She has made over 20,000 grab bag bags (5,000 just this year!). And Jason is there to help Julie with this task, too. It’s the little things that Jason does that makes the difference in the club and the museum about which he would never boast or look for recognition. So Jason, we all thank you for what you do for the club and the museum. You really ROCK! Page 4 Field Trip Oregon Coast Fossils and Agates Location: Cape Arago and Sunset Bay near Coos Bay on the Oregon Coast Date: Saturday and Sunday July 28-29, 2012 Time: 9:00am at the Crater Rock Museum on Saturday, July 28 th . Notes: We will meet Saturday, and leave together for the coast. If you can't leave with us you can still meet us over there by calling my cell phone: Eric Lindquist 541-301-7644. There are links to camping information and maps on our web site www.craterrock.com Kids Day Events Crater Rock Museum’s monthly educational series for children continues to draw plenty of children and their parents each month, on the second Saturday. Classes are geared towards elementary school age children, but all ages are welcome. The classes are free for children, and parents pay $4.00, for museum admission. Classes repeat every hour on the hour, with the last class starting at 3:00pm. We cover a different topic each month. Charles Rogers presents a Power Point presentation about the subject, and Bob and Barbara Jacobsen set up a display table. Karen Rogers provides a craft project pertaining to the month’s topic for the children to take home. The gift shop can get pretty hectic on Kids Day’s as we have adults and children swarming around the books, rocks, which includes breakable items, so we need extra volunteer help! Saturday, July 14th from 10am-3pm, is the next kids day. Learn about Paleontology in our Fossil Discovery Room. There will be a “Rocks and Minerals” Scavenger Hunt, with prizes, and the Wheel of Fortune, with the 1st spin free. And, you never know if/when Rocky the Rockhound will show up!

July Birthstone Like a perfect red rose, the Ruby's rich color speaks of love and passion. Called the "Rajnapura" or King of Gems by ancient Hindus, July's birthstone is among the most highly prized of gems throughout history. The Ruby was considered to have magical powers, and was worn by royalty as a talisman against evil. It was thought to grow darker when peril was imminent, and to return to its original color once danger was past—provided it was in the hands of its rightful owner! Rubies were thought to represent heat and power. Ancient tribes used the gem as bullets for blowguns, and it was said that a pot of water would boil instantly if a Ruby was tossed into it. Ground to powder and placed on the tongue, this crystal was used as a cure for indigestion. The word Ruby comes from the Latin "ruber," meaning red. It is a variety of the mineral Corundum, and is found as crystals within metamorphic rock. Corundum is the second hardest mineral, after Diamond. It comes in a variety of colors, and is considered a Sapphire in any color except red, which is designated as a Ruby. Rubies range in hue from an orangey red to a purplish red, but Page 5 July 2012 Field Trip Invitation for Sept. Chuck Newnham from the Rock and Arrowhead club in Klamath Falls has extended a field trip invitation to the RAGMS to go to the Juniper Ridge Opal Mine On September 15 -16. Everyone will meet at 7 a.m. on the top of Quartz Mt. on Hwy 140 at the Snow Park turnout. If you cannot meet Chuck there at that time, call Chuck and he will give you directions to his claim. This is a fee dig but the prices have been reduced for this event. To dig in the tailings is $20. To dig in the pit is $210. To dig in the pit with one of his jack hammers is $250. He only has three so it is first come, first served. There will be a potluck dinner on Saturday evening, and there is camping available at the local camp grounds and just outside of his claim. Large sized Rubies are very rare and valuable. The history of Ruby mining dates back more than 2,500 years ago. The most beautiful crystals are thought to be from Burma, but quality Rubies are also found in India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Kenya, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the United States. It has been said that the Ruby's red glow comes from an internal flame that cannot be extinguished, making a gift of this stone symbolic of everlasting love. With its hardness and durability, it is a perfect engagement gem. And if worn on the left hand, ancient lore has it that the Ruby will bring good fortune to its wearer, too!
